THE DAVISON

┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈
Emmaline was down stairs, near the staircase everyone waited for Augusta to be done getting ready. Today the davison household was filled with chaos as emmaline would put it. The maids running around, making any last minute preparations for the season. Oh how Emmaline despises the social seasons, more and so since its her older sister Augusta debut season.
"Am I to wear this all day!" She complains.
Cecilia, her youngest sister, rolled her eyes playfully. "Are you going to complain the entire day, Emmaline?" She asked flatly, already accustomed to her sister's complaints.
"Surely I cannot be expected to bear these fashions the entire day" She explained, as she felt suffocated in her dress. "I still do not understand why I have to go. You know Augusta she's gonna think I am going to ruin everything."
"Remember you wanted to see Daphne debut, just think of that" She smiled.
Emmaline sighs, knowing her sister was right. She knew how much her dear friend was looking forward to this her entire life. She had always expressed how much she wanted to be named the diamond season by her royal highness, the queen. Now with her debut, Daphne wanted that title now more than ever. Emmaline knew and believed her best friend would get that title, even the ladies in town believed so as well. If anyone deserved the title it was rightfully daphne, she deserved it. When they were both girls they would often talk about how they would plan their weddings together, waiting for the day their knight and shining armor would soon come and ask for their hand in marriage. She laughs softly at herself, quietly, as she reminisces when it was a lot simpler back then. But Emmaline's mind had changed years ago as she figured out how marriage was just a financial gain for men, as there wasn't space for love, love is a luxury that only few were able to find. That's all Emmaline ever wanted, to marry for love, but deep down she knew she would never be able to have such luxury.
Cecilia began to twirl around, "Well I feel like a princess. Do I look like one?"
Emmaline smiled, even though she hated the whole fuss about the occasion, she knew her younger sister adored the whole ordeal of the season. She gently grabbed her sister's face as she looked down at her, "You have always look like a princess to me sister" She chuckles softly, "If you feel like a princess today, imagine how beautiful you'll feel when the time comes for you to present yourself to the queen." She smiled, moving her hand on Cecilia's shoulders.
Cecilia's face softened before smiling, her sister always made her feel special, and reminded her how beautiful she was inside and out. "You really think so?"
"Oh I know so, I already know all the mens in town are going to flock their way toward you."
"No their not."
"You know I'm right."
The sisters began to laugh together, and right on cue her older brothers, Cornelius walked in, meeting with the girls in the foyer, followed by Joshua and Oliver. "Is Augusta still not ready yet" Cornlius asked
"She's taking forever." Cecilia replied.
"Shouldn't she make haste, we're already late," Emmaline explained, rolling her eyes.
"I shall run up and hasten her along, '' Oliver offered as he walked toward the staircase.
"Oliver, I'll do it!" Joshua yelled as followed behind his younger brother,
He rolled his eyes playfully, "She likes me better than you Joshua, that's a fact"
"Did she say that? Truthfully?"
"Everyone says that," Oliver smirked.
"You're a menace, you know that and she likes me better than you."
The two brothers started to argue with one another until Augusta made her way down, walking the stairs. Making her way through her brothers as she broke the two apart, becoming more and more stressed. "Would you two be quiet for once in your life!" She pulled them apart, "If I hear either one of you speak I will make you both regret it. Got it?"
They both nodded while Augusta put on a fake smile, "Good, because I do not need any of you," she looked at her siblings, but once her eyes landed on Emmaline, she glared at her sister, "To ruin my big day for me okay. Okay now we must make haste. Mama and Papa are waiting outside in the carriage" She clapped her hands before she pushed her brothers away. As she was heading toward the door, she purposely pumped into Emmaline's shoulder harshly, before heading outside where their parents were waiting for them. The rest of her siblings soon followed afterwards.
Emmaline stumbled and turned her head around, scoffed and rolled her eyes. She took a deep breath. Remember you just have to get through today, just ignore Augusta ,you're going to support Daphne. Everything is going to be fine. She sighs and walks outside, where the carriage was waiting for them. She spotted her parents, seeing her mother place a small tiara on Augusta's head, smiling "My sweet child, you look absolutely beautiful. Now come along we must be on our way."
Augusta smiled, "Thank you mother."
Emmaline saw everyone get inside the carriage while she just stood there, sighing, not wanting to go at all. Her mother yelled out "Emmaline, stop being stubborn and hurry along! You wouldn't want your father to hear about this " She sternly spoke.
"Coming!" She groaned, not wanting to deal with her father today. She then finally forced herself to get into the carriage, ready to head off to the Palace.
┈┈┈❀┈┈┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈┈┈❀┈┈┈
The Davison have made their way to the palace. Her brothers helped her, her sister, and mother out of the carriage. As Emmaline stepped foot on the ground she couldn't help but be in awe as she looked outside of the palace. She then looked over and spotted the Featherington and the Bridgerton stepping out of their carriage. She glanced over to her mother, "Mama, may i meet you later inside please"
Her mother was busy helping Augusta place the white feather in her brown curly hair. "If this is your attempt on escaping her sister debut to the queen, the answer is no Emmaline"
"I just want to greet Daphne before she heads inside, please mama" She pleaded to her mother.
Augusta rolled her eyes and scoffed, "Don't even bother, you do know she only sees you as my annoying little sister right. Nothing more"
She rolled her eyes, trying so hard not cause a scene, "She's my best friend to you know and i just want to wish her good luck"
Her mother was debating on letting her youngest go or not. She closed her eyes as she rubbed her forehead. "Okay, but once you're done i better see you inside that hallway young lady"
Emmaline smiled and ran off toward the bridgerton once she heard her mother say okay, as she ignored the rest. "Daphne!"
Daphne was talking to her mother, Violet, when she heard someone calling out her name. She glanced over and spotted where that voice was coming from. "Emmaline!" She smiled as she straight away moved to give the young girl a hug. She wrapped her arm around Emmaline's waist, as Emmaline hugged her back as she chuckled.
"What are you doing here? I" She pulled back as she kept a hold of Emmaline's shoulders, still in shock seeing her best friend here.
"Surprise!" Emmaline giggled
"I didn't expect to see you here knowing you" She joked before smiling
"Well i wouldn't miss your big day now could i. What kind of friend would if i be if I did?" Emmaline teased.
Daphne laughed softly, playfully rolling her eyes. "Well I'm glad you're here, knowing your stubborn mind. It means a lot" She said as she gently grabs her best friend hands
Emmaline looked down and smiled softly before glancing up. "I wouldn't miss it for the world," She whispered. As she was about to say something, she overheard a horse approaching them.
"Brother! You are here" Daphne said in delight.
"Of course I am here, sister. I would never miss such an important day for you and our family." He said as he got off of his horse.
Emmaline scoffed softly, whispering, "No, you would just be late for it"
Anthony heard her, rolling his eyes as he was already annoyed with her.. He didn't expect to see her at all today. "Good day Miss. Davison."
"Hmm I can't say the same thing to you my lord." She faked smiled
"Must you always," He said irritated.
"Must I always what?"
And Anthony and Emmaline eye each other, glaring, as Benedict and Colin snicker. Daphne on the other hand, knew if she didn't get in between them right now, they were going to keep bickering. She sighs "Alright before you both start killing one another, can you two do that after my debut please!"
Both Anthony and Emmaline swallowed down their pride and frustration, for the sake of Daphne. Emmaline nodded, while Anthony hummed.
"I should head inside, I just wanted to wish you good luck even though I know you're going to do amazing.
Daphne smiled, "Thank you"
"Please tell your mother I said Hello."
"Ms. Davison don't you have somewhere else to be '' Anthony he snapped at her.
Emmaline clenched her jaw, before giving him a fake smile. "You ignorant tw–"
From a distance Benedict can already sense the tension between them. He excused himself from Colin and walked his way over to them. "Okay that's enough for today, might want to save that for later festivities" He said with a cheeky smile as he held his arm out for her. "Shall we"
Emmaline sighs as she gives in, linking her arm to his. "Lead the way Benedict." She looked over at Daphne and mouthed "Good luck" before they walked away from them.
"You should've at least let me finished," She mumbled
"And not let everyone see you humiliate him, my my Emma I would've thought you would want everyone to see and hear" He teased.
She tried to protest but she knew he was right. Benedict couldn't help but smile, "You know I'm right."
"Shut up before I push you" She jokingly said before smiling. They then both started chuckling as they walked inside the palace.
Meanwhile Daphne looked at her older brother as she crossed her arms, feeling disappointed, "Why must you always pick up a fight with her"
Anthony was taken aback, feeling offended, "Me? She is the one who started it! Not I!" He protested.
She eyed him, giving him a knowing look that she's right. He then cleared his throat, offering his arm. "Shall we?"
Daphne nodded as she linked her arms with his. As she took one last breath, Anthony led them as the family made their way into the queen palace.
┈┈┈❀┈┈┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈┈┈❀┈┈┈
Emmaline and Benedict split when they entered the throne room to meet with their respective family. She made her way toward her four siblings, in which they would witness their sister debut along with nearly 500 other young ladies. From that moment on, Emmaline knew it was going to be a long day. Everyone dressed in their best attire as nervous chattering, whispered and judgemental stares filled the room, waiting for the names to be called to be presented to her Majesty.
"Miss Prudence Featherington, Miss Philipa Featherington and... Miss Penelope Featherington. All presented by their mother. The Right Honourable, Lady Featherington."
The footmen announced loudly just as the double doors opened, revealing to see the three sisters squeezing through the doorway with their mama behind them. They clumsily walked down the aisle to meet the Queen, looking quite uncomfortable, as prudence dress was awfully tight, phillipa looked way too nervous, while as for penelope she was taking everything in as she looked around the palace. At the end Emmaline noticed the visibly unimpressed look the queen gave to the three featherington girls. The girls were out of sync, shaking as they bowed. Emmaline waved slightly at Penelope, hoping it gave her some reassurance. Penelope smiled and waved back slightly, not wanting to get caught from her mother.
"Why does it look like Prudence is about to faint in front of the queen?" Oliver leans over and whispers to Emmaline ear.
Emmaline raised her eyebrow as she looked up at her brother. She looked back at the featherington, mostly prudence. She shook her head slightly, "I don't think so, she looks tired..." She said slowly just as the oldest feathering fainted in front of the queen, making the whole room gasp in displease. Her mouth opened a bit before closing it. "Never mind then" They both chuckles as she covers her mouth, trying to stop her own laughter. The queen had a displeased look on her face as she dismissed them with a flick of her wrist. Ushering them to the side, making their way out of the room. After more and more girls were called out, the footmen then announced the next girl "Lady Augusta Davison. Presented by her father and mother the right honorable, The Viscount and Viscountess Davison."
Heads have been turned to the footman as he pulls one of the double white doors, revealing her sister Augusta and her parents. All eyes were on her, walking their way down the long maroon aisle, making her way toward her majesty. August held her head high, keeping her chin up, walking with such grace with a smile as she bowed down to the queen. The queen was very pleased and nodded her head, approving the young lady before she dismissed them. And just like that Augusta Davison was gone. Emmaline started to get bored, her older brothers were talking to Anthony, Benedict, and Colin. Her younger sister was talking to Francesca, while Eloise was too busy reading what seemed to look like another scandal sheet which Emmaline hadn't seen yet.
With a booming voice, the footman went out to call out once more, announcing the next debutant. "Miss Daphne Bridgerton. Presented by her mother. The Right Honourable, the Dowager Viscountess Bridgerton."
Everyone's heads turn expectantly waiting for Daphne to enter the room as the door opens revealing her and her mother Violet. Daphne takes a deep breath as they pull the door open. The ton starting back at her now. She took a step forward as she moved down the aisle, slowly and carefully as she locked eyes with her Majesty. The Bridgerton and Davison siblings watch from the sidelines. She was absolutely perfect as she was a true lady, showcasing her well mannered, as she walked with such grace and confidence. Once Daphne finally reaches the end of the aisle, a mere inches from the Queen now. She curtsies so deep she's practically kneeling, but not quite. She held her pose, keeping her eyes to the floor.
Her Majesty tilts her head slightly, judging. Out of nowhere the queen stands up from her throne as she stares down at Daphne, walking her way toward her. She lightly lifted up Daphne's chin with her finger, examining her closely just as Daphne's eyes rose to meet her majesty. Her majesty smiled, "Flawless, my dear." She leans forward, placing a kiss on Daphne's forehead. Anthony smiles from the sidelines, impressed, and feeling very proud of his sister. While the rest are in shock as they continue to stare and whisper among themselves. Emmaline was smiling from joy at her friend's big accomplishment.
"Should we all offer our congratulations now or later?" Corneluis turned, laughing as he shook the hands of the older Davison brothers.
"Hmm we should probably ask Emmaline don't you think" Benedict smirked, "After all she might be the next jewel for next season. I only assume we'll be offering the same congratulations," He teasingly said as he had a knowing smile on his face as his eyes fell on Emmaline.
She smiled innocently, before she scoffed. Just the mere thought of her debutante season made her want to puke. Emmaline knew the day when Augusta would announce her desire to debut, it would be her turn. Her parents came up with an agreement that came down to that in a year after Augusta debut, in the hopes she marries at the end of the season, it would be Emmaline turn to step into London's high society. So within a year, Emmaline would be standing right there, where Augusta does now. Wearing the exact same horrific white feather in her chestnut curly brown hair and white silk with gold trims that fell beneath her feet. The only difference between her and her sister is, she would not be wearing the same twinkle in her eye like Augusta. So Emmaline had made a vow to herself that this year was her last year to be absolutely fearless and free before being whisked away for marriage. She promised that she would make it count. Making sure she would live the fullest while causing mischief, collecting stories that she would tell for the rest of her life. Stories that Emmaline hoped would keep the girl she once was alive in only memory and lastly, having one more adventure.
"Or Eloise might be the next season incomparable, she might pull something out of her sleeve and I don't know, maybe surprise us all who knows." She joked, wanting to get the attention off her. They all laughed, Elosie overheard and rolled her eyes annoyingly before whacking Emmaline's shoulder.
"Ouch was that for" She rubbed her shoulder
"That's Emma was for making that ridiculous comment" Eloise snapped.
┈┈┈❀┈┈┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈┈┈❀┈┈┈
Once the Davison and the Bridgerton gave their congratulations and bid their farewell, the family had arrived back to their estate. As everyone was getting out of the carriage and making their way inside the house, Emmaline went to the drawing room. She had her leatherbound journal tuck in between her arms. She sat down by the window and began to write away, disconnecting herself from the real world. She enjoyed the peace and quiet, knowing she wasn;t going to get that much this season. But that didn't last long, hearing a scream all throughout the house.
Joshua and Oliver covered their ears as they entered the room before closing the door. Emmaline raised her eyebrows, "What was that about"
Joshua pulled out what seems to be the same sheet that Eloise was reading today. "This" He said as he handed her the sheet.
"Is it another scandal sheet?" She asked
"Yes but it's much different"
"What is so different about it from the rest?" She said with curiosity filling her voice.
"This one lists subject by name... in full" Joshua said with a cheeky smile.
She grabbed the sheet and furrowed her eyebrows, "Lady Whistledown?" She whispered, she then looked up at Oliver. "Do we know a Lady Whistledown?"
Her brother, Oliver, shakes his head, before plopping a biscuit in his mouth, "No, but surely this author wouldn't risk using her real name."
"So you think it's a she?" asked Joshua, as he sat down by his sister.
Emmalined rolled her eyes and looked at Joshua, "Because she is simply too good to be anyone but a man?"
Joshua shrugged his shoulders as he made himself some tea. Oliver lean over against the wall and looked over Emmaline shoulder, reading the pamphlet, "She does seems someone with access thats for sure"
Emmaline looked over her shoulder, "Then why would Augusta be screaming?"
Oliver pointed at the paper. She looked down at the sheet and started to read. "A true beauty with well mannered," Lady whistledown writes, "Oh pleased she is not well mannered I should know" Emmaline complained. Oliver chuckles, "Just keep reading"
Emmaline sighs and continues reading, "Augusta Davison, a true beauty with well mannered she is, but rather self-centered and desperate who wants nothing more than to be named this year's incomparable. If only Daphne Bridgerton would have chosen to sit this season out..." Her jaw dropped, covering her mouth to prevent her from laughing. "No she did not!"
"Oh but she did sister," Oliver laughed.
Emmaline gave in and laughed along with him, "Well she isn't wrong." She went on and continued reading. Her smile grew and grabbed a hold of Oliver's shoulder. ''Daphne was named the season's incomparable!" She said excitedly, "She has given her the title of being a diamond of the first water. How lovely." She was extremely proud of Daphne, she knew how much Daphne wanted this.
At that moment their mother, Eleanor, walked into the drawing room, rubbing the bridge of her nose, looking rather stressed. She saw her children reading the new scandal sheet, sighing as she reached for the paper in Emmaline's hand. Both Oliver and Emmaline's eyes widened, "Mother!"
"Mama! We're not finished reading it."
Eleanor shook her head, "That's enough, your sister is upstair furious by this."
Emmaline slouched on the bench, rolling her eyes as she scoffed. All eyes had turned upon her, "Emmaline!" The boys held in their laughter.
"What? It's true and you know it!" She shrugs at her mother, scolding.
"It's best we to put this off of Lady Whistledown for now" She said, "We, as a family, need to keep our heads clear and focus tonight ball" She suggested
"Mama, is it really necessary for me to attend to Lady Danbury ball this evening?" She didn't want to go at all. She was dreading it all day today, hoping her parents would change her mind. What was the point of attending since she's not a debutante.
Shock was written all over Eleanor's face, "Of course you are. I'm not changing my mind. Besides, it would be good practice, preparing you on what to expect next year for your debut sweetheart." She explained.
"Then why isn't Cecilia going then hmm. Why aren't you forcing her to go?"
"Because she has French later today"
"But Ma–"
"No buts Emmaline. Your father and I have already decided. That is final!" Eleanor said peacefully but her eyes telling Emmaline to not fight on it anymore. Emmaline groaned, she's living in her worst nightmare. Oliver gave her a sympathetic look, "Hey I'll be there, don't you worry"
Emmaline leaned her head against his leg and glanced up, feeling defeated and sad, "Really" She said quietly.
"Yes, I promise it's not that horrible" He whispered
This is why Emmaline's favorite brother is Oliver. He is always there for her and tries to make any situation better. "Thank you"
Eleanor took a deep breath, "Now you three" She pointed at her children, "Get ready for dinner thank you." She said as walked out the room, hearing her daughter Augusta calling for her.
Joshua looked over to his siblings and tilted her head, "You hear her, come on now"
Emmaline sighs, "Let the nightmare begin"

Entering the empty theater there were a few workers scattered around, busy doing their own thing. Anthony spotted Siena on stage as she sang in preparation for her nightly show. When Siena finally sees Anthony. They regard each other with a seductive Smile. Moments later they were in Siena's dressing room, as she threw him against the wall. She leaned up and kissed him. Anthony moans in between the kiss
"Someone will hear us my lord–" Siena whispered seductively.
Anthony leans down, deepening the kiss as he lets out another moan. He roughly picked her up, knocking out various items to the floor.
After another rendezvous with Siena, the opera singer and Anthony were now laying on her couch as she was on top of him as they were now beside each other. Just breathing a beat. Anthony reaches out for his pocket-watch that was on a table nearby. It has become a force of habit for him, always checking the time of his pocket watch.
Siena rolled her eyes, feeling a bit annoyed by it. "One day I shall seize that watch
and take it apart. Bit by bit." SHe sighs as she swings her feet in the air
Anthony smiled, creasing her face "that belonged to my father. Should it disappear, I'd miss it sadly."
"Then you'd know precisely how I feel. Every time you disappear." She explained before she leaned in, placing her lips against his, kissing. "Stay with me today."
And even though Anthony would clearly like nothing more than to stay here, having her in his arms, he sighs, "I am afraid I cannot."
Siean groans and Anthony continues, "I must chaperone my sister at the Danbury ball this evening.".
"Daphne, yes? What might they be like? These grand affairs she must attend." Siena asked as she wrapped a blanket around her body.
It seems to take all the effort in the world for Anthony to get up and start to dress himself but he manages to get dressed. "You would hate them." He chuckles, "Every eligible lady of breeding dressed in some lavishly-trimmed frock. Bloodthirsty mamas at their sides. Wary fathers making arrangements for only the most advantageous of matches. Of course, without my father here, that responsibility falls upon me."
"A significant duty, no doubt." She teased.
He sighs, "Someone must guard my poor sister from these bucks and pinks. Ensure her virtue remains free from any kind of... defilement."
"Daphne is fortunate. Every woman is not afforded such gallant protection."
"Every woman is not a lady." He whispered
Siena jaw clenched, as she scoffed quietly, She had a look on her face that would kill. "Of course not, my lord." She said sarcastically, with a mocking tone as she crossed her arms, looking away from in, feeling her anger grow more and more.
Anthony eyes her, sensing that she's bothered by his comment. Seeing how much it affected her, "Siena." He walked over to the chair, sitting down next to her as he gently grabbed a hold of her hand, intertwining their fingers, bringing up close to his chest. "You have me. Protecting you, too." He caressed her cheek, and leaned closer, whispering, " I shall always protect you." With that he filled the gap and kissed her slowly as Siena moaned lightly, kissing him back as well.
She pulls back and looks back at him, Anthony holding his gaze before, "And I shall always be grateful." She whispered.
"Surely hours remain before tonight's ball. Are you certain you cannot stay? In the interest of defilement?" She sits up a little, seductive. He stares at her, conflicted, until... He takes her in his arms. And off the two of them, getting back to their fun...
┈┈┈❀┈┈┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈┈┈❀┈┈┈
The day went by rather quickly, filled with chatters, setting the last preparations and so on. It was now nightfall with the moon so bright. Emmaline was in her room as a group of maids were getting her ready for this evening. After taking a bath, a dark brown gown was already laid out on Emmaline bed, ready to be laced up and worn.
"M'lady it's time to get you dressed", The maid mary called out.
Emmaline sighs and nodded, letting the maids help her get ready. She already knew it was going to be a long night for her. The maids helped her put on her dress that soon slung to her skin. The breast of the gown was tight, restricting her ability to breathe. The dress was engraved with floral designs and adorned with beads of the same shade of the gown lace
"Mary, I can barely breathe in this thing" She said, trying to catch her breath.
The maid, Mary, chuckles, "You're mother did say you would over exaggerate" She said as she finished putting on the last minute touches, smoothing out the dress. "There you go maam" She said as she was patting down the puffed sleeves.
Emmaline looks at herself in the mirror, examining herself. She didn't like the girl she was seeing. She turned her body around, facing Mary, and groaned. "I look ridiculously Mary"
"Nonsense you look beautiful dear"
"Can you just I don't know lie to mama say I'm not feeling well or something, anything really" She rambled
Mary sighs, "You know I can not do that ma'am."
Emmaline knew she was right and sighs. She looked over the table and saw her family jewels, necklaces, earrings, and saw the pins all laid out nicely. Her eyes widen, are her parents trying to make her look like a debutant this evening. Not on her watch. "Mary, can you make sure I don't get mistaken as a debutante this evening. I do not want to partake in my parents' games."
"Very well madam"
She sighs, feeling relief. Thankfully she was wearing a dark colored gown. Debutantes wear shades made from lightly colored fabrics. The meaning behind it is to signify purity and wealth. They also wear their hair up to show off their necks and the diamonds and other jewels that twinkle there. She wasn't going to wear any jewels and she wore her soft waves brown hair in a half up and down her back. Emmaline grabbed a few strands of her hair to frame her face. She sighs before taking one last look in the mirror. Her brothers would be there and Pen. What could possibly go wrong.
┈┈┈❀┈┈┈ˋˏ༻❁༺ˎˊ┈┈┈❀┈┈┈
Moments passed and the Davidsons family arrived at the Danbury House and stepped out of the carriage. Emmaline was the last one to step out, and followed the others down the stone path that led them inside the building and into the grand entrance of Lady Danbury's ballroom. The season's opening ball at Danbury house is a most highly sought-after invitation, indeed, for every darling debutante from Park Lane to Regent Street will be on display. Titled, chaste, and innocent, this is what they have been raised and trained for since birth. Entering the ballroom Augusta locked arms with Eleanor and Thomas, Emmaline wasn't going to lie; she was astonished at the sight of the decorations, leaving her in awe. The room was filled with laughter, music, people were dancing and so much more. Every potential suitor was looking at the Davison family, not taking their gaze from Augusta.
"Remember darling, let them come to you" Eleanor whispered.
"Make them express their interest first," Thomas explained.
Augusta smiled and nodded, taking in every piece of advice from her parents. She's been waiting for this moment all her life.
Emmaline shook her head, rolling her eyes, "Oh of course because it so happens to be forbidden that a woman should show any premarital interest in a man... wouldn't want them mistaken her as a harlot" She mumbled.
"Emmaline!" Thomas quietly said with a harsh tone with a stern look on his face.
Eleanor had a worried look on her face. She needed to step in now... for Emmaline sake. She placed her hand on her husband's shoulder, whispering "Thomas, do not cause a scene. People are watching dearest."
He kept his anger in check, and turned his head away from his youngest daughter. He stared straight ahead. "Do not humiliate me and your family. Do I make myself clear?" He said coldly, and warned her.
Her stomach clenched with fear. She looked down, nodding her head slowly, "Yes father"
Cornelius stares down, glaring at the men warning them. He was well known since he met them during his days at Oxford and were at the same gentlemen's club they go to as well. Which meant all the potential suitors knew not to try anything stupid with her sister.
"It seems Augusta caught a gentleman's eye already, " Joshua said, as the potential suitor walked his way toward the Davison family.
"Lord and Lady Davison" he bowed and looked at Augusta and smiled. "Miss Davison, a pleasure meeting you" He said, completely ignoring the other four siblings.
Augusta offered a small sweet smile and bowed her head. She waited for her father to formally introduce them.
"A pleasure to see you again Lord Tompkins, how you been" Thomas Davison finally spoke before eyeing the suitor first. He offered a hand to the gentleman, chuckling. Lord Tompkins reached out to shake hands with Thomas.
"I've been good sir. I was wondering if Miss. Davison would like to dance."
Augusta smiled grew and looked back at her father, and he nodded with a smile. She grinned and looked back at Lord Tompkins, "I would love to."
Her hand fell into Lord Tompkins as he moved there arms, interlocking. He led her to the dancefloor where many other gentlemen and ladies awaited for the next song. All eyes were on them as they were having a decent and pleasant conversation with one another.
Thomas with a stern look turned around to face his other four children, "I need you four to behave. Do not disgrace the Davison name you hear." He waited for their response as the children nodded and hummed. Thomas took a deep breath, closing his eyes. "Now then," He opened his eyes and led his wife onto the dancefloor. Once their parents were out in plain sight , Emmaline felt like she could breathe again. She looked over at her brothers "If you need me I'll be hiding."
Her brothers chuckles.
"Do not get in trouble alright" Cornelius said.
"I'm going to be with Colin if you need me" Oliver explained
"And I'm going to be outside for some fresh air," Joshua said.
She nodded as she saw her brother walking away. Until she realized she was alone now. "Hey wait, don't lea—" But it was already too late as they were all gone and she was left all alone. It was dangerous for any lady in society to be left alone and vulnerable without a chaperon. Making it a perfect opportunity for any suitor, gentlemen to take advantage. A gentleman was about to make his way toward Emmaline until she directly looked at him, giving him the most deadliest glare. The gentleman looked rather terrified and quickly turned away.
"The poor man lost his color"
"It looks like he might puke"
Alreadying smiling as she rolled her eyes playful, watching as both Benedict and Colin moved past the crowds surrounding them and finally came to stand next to her. The three had always been very good friends since they were kids. Benedict and Emmaline would often be covered in paint when Benedict would try to help Emmaline learn basic painting skills. He would often be the one looking after her, making sure she doesn't get in trouble. While Colin and Emmaline were a devious pair, always causing some sort of mischief and pulling pranks on each other. If you need a good laugh these two always manage to make that happen.
"Good, it would get him off my back" She chuckles.
"You will be the death of a man one day Emmaline Davison" Benedict laughed, shaking his head.
Emmaline smiled and dropped slowly, remembering Anthony would often say that to her when they were younger. She quickly put on a fake smile, "Wouldn't be the first time someone said that"
Benedict could sense something was wrong, was it something he said or did something happen beforehand?
"And besides they shouldn't be talking to me when there are plenty of debutantes here to take and make conversation with. As of I am not a debutante" She explained
"Then why are you here?" Colin asked
"My mother and father made me" She sighs before continuing, "Mother said it would be good practice before my debut"
"Ahh yes the day that the whole ton has been impatiently waiting for" Benedict teased.
Emmaline rolled her eyes before wacking his arm. "Ouch what was that for you"
Colin laughed "You know he's right Emma, The ton has been waiting for your debut since the day you were born"
"But I don't understand why, why me" She said still not understanding why the ton was making a huge fuss about it "I'm not that special " she said sincere
"Who knows, you know how society is" Colin explained
"I think I see Anthony and Daphne over there," Benedict explained, before turning to Emmaline "I'll be right back. Anthony! Daph!" He called from the other side of the ballroom.
"I should go meet with them. I have to tell him about my next upcoming tour to Greece"
"Colin, that's amazing! Greece, how exciting" She genuinely smiled.
"Thank you, I'll see you around" He smiled before he walked over to meet up with his siblings, meeting them halfway. Once again Emmaline was all alone.
Anthony and Daphne turn to see Benedict and Colin approaching. Anthony sighs.
"If the only upstanding gentlemen present this evening are your brothers, then we are in a great deal of trouble indeed." He mutter
"You continue to say we yet–" Daphne pointed out,
But before she could continue, Colin cut her off unintentionally as he slid up next to her, "--Did mother tell you yet? About my tour? I am to begin in Greece."
"Greece? How adventurous, Colin!" She mused.
Anthony could see Lady Danbury walking up to them, wearing an elegant a white and gray light colored gown, with a cane. He nodded seeing Lady Danbury approaching them. "On guard." He warned as the boys immediately turned around, trying to look for an exit, trying to blend in with the crowd.
"Too late. I already noted you."
All three boys turned to Lady Danbury, smiling as they felt embarrassed. The boys introduced themselves, bowing while Daphne did a curtsy.
"Lady Danbury!"
"Good evening!"
"Lovely to see you!"
Lady Danbury chuckles quietly and turns to Daphne, "Miss Bridgerton, you look rather lovely this evening." She smiled and complimented, making Daphne smile warmly. She looked down and spotted Daphne's empty dance card, tied around her wrist. "Is there a reason I have yet to see you on the dance floor?"
"All in due time, Lady Danbury." Anthony reassured. "We have only just arrived."
Lady Danbury eyes him. Sly. Knowing how protective and restrictive He was toward Daphne. She shook her head slightly before leaning in toward Daphne, "You poor thing." She said bluntly, walking away from them
Daphne stares back at her, thrown. Colin, meanwhile, spots someone on the dance floor. He leans to Benedict as they begin talking. After an hour passed the Bridgerton siblings part ways as Anthony and Daphne continue doing their rounds as Anthony scans through the room, Colin on the dance floor, dancing with Mariana Thompson, and lastly Benedict talking with Joshua and Lady Danbury. Violet on the other hand, was watching Daphne and Anthony, across the room, as she stood at the edge of the dance floor. A quiet beat, then Daphne sighs.
"I am quite parched." She sighs, feeling bored as she just stands and waits around for her brother to continue to control who she should and shouldn't dance or make conversation with.
"I shall fetch you a glass of Lemonade" He offered
Daphne looked over at the refreshment table and spotted Emmaline. She was relieved to see her. She quickly glanced back at Anthony, "No. You have already done so much for me tonight." She touched his arm, reassuring him, and smiled, "I shall return in a mere moment."
Anthony eyed her, feeling suspicious but gave in. He nodded reluctantly. As for Daphne, she headed over to the refreshment table as she moved through the crowds, greeting people along the way.
Standing alone by the refreshments table Emmaline Davison was able to stay hidden throughout the night. Some had approached her but she was always quiet to turn them away or tell them a lie. Regardless they were quick to turn. She was able to sneak in one of her books without her father realizing it. She was leaning against the wall and she was reading.
"There you are I've been looking all over for you"
Emmaline looked up and smiled, putting her book down as she saw her best friend approach her. "Are my eyes deceiving me or do i truly see the diamond of the seasons"
"You flatter me" She joked before smiling as she hugged her.
Emmaline hugged her back, "How is it going"
She sighs, "I don't even know where to begin," She explained. Grabbing one of the small glasses that were filled with lemonade. Daphne took a sip of her drink. "I'm enjoying myself but—"
"Small glasses."
Both Daphne and Emmaline looked over to see it was none other than Nigel Berbrrok standing there with the girls a creepy smile. Emmaline never really liked Nigel; she always felt very uneasy whenever she was around him or when she saw him. She just found him vile.
"Lord Berbrooke." Daphne curtsy while Emmaline eyed him.
"Tiny little things, are they not?" He said.
"The... glasses? I suppose?" Daphne faked a smile. She wanted nothing more for this conversation to be over.
"Then the matter is settled."
"I am not entirely sure about the matter in which we discuss, my lord..." She furrowed her eyebrows, confused.
Nigel smiles, inching closer to her, "You have always amused me, Miss Bridgerton. Ever since I was a schoolboy and you were–"
"All but five?" Emmaline interrupted, feeling rather disgusted.
He turns to Emmaline, rather annoyed with her "Ah Miss. Davison I did not see you there" He faked a smile, chuckling. He turns back to Daphne as he loudly slurps his lemonade and just stares.
Daphne shifted a bit, feeling uncomfortable. Emmaline noticed this and tried to find a way out for her. "Daphne I believe Anthony is looking for you" She lied as she locked her arms in between hers.
Daphne caught on and nodded as she held onto her arm, following Emmaline lead, "You're right. My brother... He summons me, I..." Daphne excused herself as Emmaline led them away from Niegl. Walking to the other side of the ballroom. She looked over her shoulder quickly. Glancing back to see Nigel, who has started to follow them "Please tell me you have another plan".
Emmaline glanced back and Nigel is still following them. "Ughh this man doesnt understand boundaries." She looked around the ballroom, trying to find a way to lose him.
"Miss Bridgerton? A moment please!"
Shit. Daphne immediately spins back around, continues hurrying through the crowd as Emmaline takes the lead but, only to end up crashing straight into....
"Pardon me."
"Sorry."
Simon nodded, "Forgive me."
They look up at him.Momentarily thrown, before they step back and see Nigel, continuous to approach. Daphne was quick to think fast and turn back to Simon.
"Tell me your name." Daphne asked.
Simon blinks.
"Your name, sir." Emmaline asked.
"Am I honestly to believe you do not already know my name?" He sighs.
Daphne eyes him. Arrogant much? Emmaline thought. But Nigel's still approaching. Daphne tosses her head back with a laugh. Using Simon as a diversion.
Emmaline was confused as to why she was laughing. She glanced over to see Nigel now stopped, turned, and walked away from them. Huh that seems to work.
Daphne breathes, relieved.
"If you desire an introduction, madam, I do believe accosting me is the least civilized of ways."
"Accosting you?" She stunned
"I beg your pardon?" Emmaline was offended.
"Truly, they will try anything." He said under his breath. He looked around as half of the ladies in the ballroom were ogling this man.
"Sir. That is not... This is not..." Daphne was speechless. She felt irritated. "What IS your name–"
From the distance, in the crowd, Anthony recognized an old friend. No it can't be, he thought. He never believed to ever see him again "–Bassett? Bassett!" He yelled excitedly.
The three turn their heads to see Anthony coming over. Simon smiled and exclaimed, "Bridgerton!"
"Come here, old friend!" Anthony offered his hand to him as Simon reached out his shaking hands with him.
And Daphne's eyes go wide as these two greet each other like friends. Emmaline looked at the two men, greeting one another, confused.
"I heard news of your father." Anthony's eyes widened slightly as he realized, "Deuce take it, you are no longer Basset!"
"I shall always be–"
"--Hastings! The Duke of Hastings, now known forever more." He smiled.
Simon offers an uneasy smile.
"The Duke of Hastings is it?" Daphne asked as she chimed into the conversation.
The boys turn to her. Anthony almost forgot she was there, still not noticing Emmaline was standing right next to her.
"Right. Hastings, this is my sister." He introduced his sister.
"Your sister." He was taken aback as he glanced over at her.
"Daphne, Hastings and I know each other from our days at Oxford." He continued to explain. He then turns to Simon,"Days we shall not soon forget..." He teased.
Daphnee smiled, "Yes. As I am well aware of the company you keep, brother, I am certain your days with His Grace were most..."
"Civilized," Emmalined chimed in.
"Precisely, most... civilized indeed," She said pointedly nods at Simon.
Anthony looked over and finally noticed Emmaline. He gritted his teeth, feeling irritated by her presence. "Why are you here, you're not a debutant?"
Emmaline faked a laugh before flipping him off. Anthony rolled his eyes.
"Why don't you ask my parents if you desperately must know?" She sarcastically said.
"Where are your brothers?" He asked.
Emmaline shrugged her shoulders, "I do not know."
"Do you mean to tell me you're unchaperoned?" Anthony exclaimed.
"Well if you put it like that..." She whispered.
"My god Em–" He almost slipped up. He groaned as he rubbed the temple of his forehead, taking a huge breath in and out. "God I thought Corneluis knew better" He said under his breath.
"I tried telling them but–" She explained.
"You should've tried harder!" He said sternly.
Emmaline couldn't deny that Antony's words felt like a slap to the face, but she didn;t let it show. Why is he always like this toward her? "You know you can be a real Arse you know that." She mumbled, annoyed.
"And do you know you're a Prat?" Anthony glared.
"Twit." She said
"Daft cow!" He taunted.
"Knob Head!" Emmaline scoffed.
"Piss off!" Anthony growled.
Simon turned to Daphne, confusion written all over his face, and asked, "Are they always like this?"
"Not always but yes you never see day without them two fighting." Daphne explained
Anthony cleared his throat, motioning towards Emmaline. "Hasting this is Emmaline Davison. A..." He took a deep breath, "...friend of our family."
"Cornelius, little sister?"
Anthony nodded.
"I remember you mentioning of her back at Oxford. That's all Anthony ever talked about. He said nothing but good things about you," Simon recalled, and Anthony's jaw tensed, glaring at his old friend.
"I think you have the wrong person" Emmaline said, confused.
"No, I'm pretty certain he was talking about you. You are his best friend are you not?" Simon asked.
Her face softened. She didn't know about this, she was rather surprised more than anything. She still doesn't know what happened between one day they were smiling and laughing being the best of friends and the next he grew distant, started being mean, and the two started fighting and hated each other. They couldn't even stand on another anymore. She shrugged it off and started laughing as she turned to Anthony "Aww you did miss me and here I thought you hated me all along" She teased.
Anthony rolled his eyes, "I still do hate you" He quickly said before turning to Simon, "Hastings, we shall need to get together properly. I expect to see you at our club then?"
Simon confirmed, "Indeed. Evening, Bridgerton. Miss. Bridgerton. Miss Davison."
Simon looks at Daphne and nods before heading away from the trio leaving as she curtsies. She watches him go as he looks back, just in time to see Lady Featherington and other mamas start to surround him. Emmaline looked up at Anthony with a playful smile, teasing him, "So you talked about me?"
Anthony looked down at her and groaned, "You're never going to let that go are you."
"Nope!" She laughed softly.
Anthony has forgotten how her laugh sounded, not realizing how much he missed hearing it. But he soon shrugged the feeling off. Before he opened his mouth,
Violet has caught up to the three, grabbing Daphne's arm, "Daphne I believe Lord Wetherby is looking for you to dance."
"Is he?" Daphne's face lit up, smiling.
"If only it were not time for us to retire." Anthony interrupted them.
"Oh. Well Daphne is anything but weary. I will stay with her." She explained ready to drag her daughter to the dance floor.
"That would be lovely."
"Daphne. There is nary a gentleman here who would not take your hand. You must think about this." He turned to his sister, "The most perfect thing for you to do now is not to dance. But to leave them all wanting more. If anyone knows how this works, it is your eldest brother." He explained.
And Daphne looks around. Gentlemen nod back at her, whispering. She looks at her mother, "Perhaps he is right." She smiled. "Let us go."
Violet feeling unhappy with the proposition, she walked out leaving just Emmaline and Anthony behind. Before leaving she greeted Emmaline with a smile as Emmaline did the same thing.
Once they were out of sight, Emmaline turned to face Anthony, "Why are you taking away all the fun for her." She mocked.
"Maybe if you were to have a dance card on you, you would know" He replied, making Emmaline roll her eyes. Anthony held out his hand for her as she eyed him and up and down. He rolled his eyes, "I'm taking you home."
She tilted her head, "Why , you're not obligated to do so."
"Yes but knowing your three brothers they're already drunk off their minds and my mother would not let me hear the end of it if she knew I left you unchaperoned and alone." He sighs.
Emmaline looked down at his hands, feeling hesitant, not knowing what to do. She knew he was right but she wasn't going to tell him. She looked over and saw her parents still chaperoning Augusta. She glanced back at Anthony, looking down at his hand. She placed her hand on top of his. "Okay..."
Anthony grabbed a hold of her hand and led them out the ballroom and took Emmaline back home.

The carriage ride back home wasn't so bad, Emmaline accidentally fell asleep on his shoulder. Anthony looked down at the girl and sighs, pushing a few strands of her hair behind her ear. She looked peaceful, he thought. Once they arrived at the davison household, Anthony knew Emmaline wasn't going to wake up anytime soon, but deep down he didn't want to wake her up. He helped her out of the carriage as he carried her inside her home as Mary the maid, opened the door, letting him inside. He already knew the way to her bedroom as he walked up the stairs. Opening the door to her bedroom, he gently placed her on her bed. As he did, he started to look around her room. Nothing much had changed, just more books, the dolls were gone, some canvas were up. He walked over to her desk which was filled with her favorite books and papers everywhere. She was still writing, he couldn't help but smile a bit as he picked one of her poems, reading them. He folded the piece of paper and put it inside his pocket.
"Mary." He quietly called the maid in.
Mary walked into the room, "Yes Lord Bridgerton."
"Can you make sure she is well..."
She chuckles, nodding her head, "Already on it Sir."
"Thank you" he whispered. "I'll make my way out."
"I'll make sure to tell her you brought her up."
Anthony stopped his steps and turned to Mary, "I think it's better if she doesn't know" He explained.
"As you wish, I bid you goodnight sir."
"Night Mary..." He nodded and walked out of the Davison house and headed back home.
