7: Sweet Sixteenth
DUE TO Via's childhood crush breaking her heart, she didn't sleep that night. She couldn't stop replaying what had happened in her head, especially the part when Belly accused Via of having a raging crush on her- she was right.
The worst part was, Via had to pretend to be okay- which she was pretty good at doing, yet it drained her emotions completely. Today, Olivia had to ignore her raging crush on Belly and celebrate her birthday... like a normal friend would.
Belly exclaimed, "Good morning, everyone."
Susannah was the first to hug her, "There's the birthday girl, looking like a vision in floral."
Jere hugged her tightly, "Happy sweet 16th, Belles."
Belles. Via gritted her teeth, before rushing up to Belly. She hugged her awkwardly, as Via tried to act like last night never happened. Olivia smiled, though she didn't feel like smiling, "Happy birthday, Belly."
Belly smiled, though confusion spread across the girls face, "Thanks, uh, I'm sorry about what I-"
"Don't worry about it, seriously, it's no big deal." Olivia smiled, before sitting at the table eagerly.
"Now Belly Button's getting old finally." Steven added, "Happy birthday."
Laurel hugged her daughter, "Happy birthday, sweetheart."
Belly grinned, "Thanks, everyone."
The family sat in the living room, gathered on the couches surrounding Belly as she opened everyone's presents. Laurel handed her daughter the first present, watching as she opened it, "It's a first edition, I got it from a rare book dealer."
"Thanks, mom." Belly tried to sound enthusiastic, as she opened a page where a bookmark had been placed, "Oh, it's Susannah's favourite poem! She made us recite this. For whatever we lose, Like a you or a me, it's always ourselves we find in the sea."
"Okay, open mine now, Belly." Susannah passed her a gift eagerly, watching as Belly unwrapped it.
Belly's face lit up when she saw the pearls in the box she had opened, "Oh, wow. They're gorgeous, thank you."
"My mom gave me these pearls for my sweet 16." Susannah exclaimed, as she turned to face Laurel, "Radiant, isn't she?"
Laurel agreed, "They look great on you, sweetheart."
Belly glanced at Via, before asking, "Why didn't you give them to Livy?"
Susannah explained, "She told me they'd look better on you."
A slight smile appeared on Belly's face as she nodded in appreciation at Via, "Thank you, Livy. It means a lot."
"I guess that's my queue..." Via smiled, as she passed her present over to the girl, "Go on, open it."
Belly carefully opened Via's gift, revealing a framed photo of the two girls. Olivia had doodled on the frame of the photograph, which was Belly's favourite selfie of them together.
Belly grinned, "Oh my God, I love this picture! Thank you, Liv."
"I'm next, here." Jere exclaimed, passing his gift to Belly as she opened it. He explained, "It's a good luck charm to help you pass your driving test."
Belly smiled, "Perfect. Thank you-"
"Think fast, Belly!" Steven interrupted, chucking his present at her.
"Steven!" Belly gasped, before opening the Princeton sweater he had gifted her. She said sarcastically, "You actually spent money on me."
Steven replied, "Relax, I just didn't want you stealing mine next year when I get in."
Susannah suggested, "Conrad, why don't you give Belly your present?"
Conrad stared blankly for a moment, before replying, "Sorry, I forgot."
Via frowned, turning back to look at him angrily, "What the fuck-"
Laurel warned, "Language."
Via continued, "It's her birthday, Connie, have some respect-"
Jeremiah held her wrist, stopping her from saying anymore as he gave her that look. Olivia stopped arguing, as she rolled her eyes and sat back down on the floor.
Belly fake smiled, "It's okay. Uh, I wasn't really expecting anything, so..."
To cheer Belly up, the twins took her on a drive around Cousins so she could practice for her test. Via sat in the back, praying that they wouldn't crash due to Belly's driving skills.
Jere questioned, "You excited to see Taylor?"
"Yeah, super excited." Belly smiled, as Jere and Via gave each other that look.
Via questioned, "You sure?"
"She's my best friend in the whole world but, uh, you know how Taylor is. She's like a hurricane." Belly explained, "And I guess I always feel like the supporting character around her, which normally I don't mind, but.."
"But it's your birthday." Jeremiah finished, "And you're the main character, Belly, not her."
Belly smiled, before looking through the rear-view mirror to see Via in the backseats. She swerved unexpectedly, before regaining control of the vehicle, "Shit-"
Jere chuckled nervously, "Focus, Belles."
Via questioned, gripping onto her seatbelt, "Can we maybe not die on your birthday?"
The trio arrived at the bus station, watching as the coach parked in an empty space. Belly turned to Jere, "Twenty bucks she calls you Jeremy again."
Jere replied, "I think she learned from last time."
"No, I'm with Belly on this, that's how she flirts with you." Via added, "It's gross."
Taylor rushed out of the coach, a massive display of balloons in her hands as she hugged Belly tightly. Taylor remarked, "Belly, you tart."
"What?" Belly chuckled nervously.
"You finally took my advice, this outfit is snatched." Taylor explained, as she turned to the twins, "Isn't she looking like a snack?"
Via raised her eyebrows awkwardly, turning to her brother before answering, "Uh, sure, totally."
"Always." Jere added, before offering to help carry Taylor's bags.
"Thank you." Taylor flirted, "You're such a gentleman, Jeremy."
Via corrected, trying to hold in her laugh as she made eye contact with her brother, "It's Jeremiah."
"I like Jeremy better." Taylor replied, as she started walking to the car, "Anyway, Ollie, how've you been, girl?"
Via nodded, as she climbed into the car, "Uh, good. Yeah."
Taylor changed the subject quickly, "Oh, Belly, open my present."
As Jeremiah drove the car back home, Belly opened a purple bikini that Taylor had bought her. Via's eyes widened when she saw it, as she imagined Belly wearing... Stop! Focus.
"I think it'll look so hot on you." Taylor explained, "Do you like it?"
Jere chuckled, "Belly would never wear that."
Belly corrected, "Actually, I really like it. Thank you, Taylor."
"So, what's the plan for the party tonight?" Taylor asked eagerly.
Olivia explained, "Well, mom always plans a big lobster dinner-"
"Boring, no." Taylor interrupted, rolling her eyes, "It's her sweet 16th, we have to go out."
Via defended, her feelings clearly hurt, "But-"
Belly noticed, interrupting Via to explain, "No, no. These dinners are really really fun, and Susannah had the idea to make it midsommar themed, so she got flower crowns especially made for us and everything."
Taylor remarked, "Should you be spending your birthday with people your own age?"
"I am, you're here." Belly replied, "So are the twins."
"And, I guess, Steven." Taylor added.
Belly exclaimed, "And Cam's coming tonight."
"Really?" Via couldn't help but ask, as a familiar sense of jealousy pitted in her stomach.
Taylor smiled, "I'm so excited to meet the guy who finally got you to take your eyes of you-know-who."
"Taylor." Belly warned, glancing at Via and Jeremiah quickly.
"I have an idea." Jere suggested, "After dinner we could go to Nicole's big blowout at her place."
Taylor nodded eagerly, "Yes! Who's Nicole?"
"She's my big sister for the deb ball." Belly explained, "She's super nice and just really cool and fun and..."
"Ugh, I'm like melting, right now." Taylor interrupted, as she stood up quickly, "Can we go back to the house? I want to change into my bikini and jump in the pool."
