3: The Bonfire

"YOU MAKE it look so easy." Via lowered her voice, "You know... being gay."

"That's because I have gay moms." Evie replied through the phone, "If they had a straight kid I think they'd have a heart attack."

Via chuckled, "I'm serious, Evie. I don't know if I can survive the summer. Todays been a shit show. I just can't-"

"Where's the positive can-do attitude?" Evie asked sarcastically, before continuing, "You never call me on the first night, what happened? Why was it a shit show?"

"It could've gone better." Via explained, "I mean, I totally crumbled. I think Conrad knows and I'm freaking out. He literally looked at me and said I understand."

"It's okay, Ollie." Evie reassured, "You know what's the best thing you can do right now?"

Via frowned, "If you say that I should go to the Bonfire, I'll kill you."

"Never-mind, then. But I think it would be fun. Find a girl, hook up, make Belly jealous." Evie explained.

"First of all, Belly isn't coming to the Bonfire." Via paused before continuing, "Second of all, I'm not even out to my family so if they see me kissing a girl on a beach, they'll go into cardiac-arrest."

"Babe, I'm saying this as your best friend. You need to get out there!" Evie encouraged, "Put on something slutty, go to the bonfire, kiss some girls, get high."

Via replied, "Well, I did take Connie's joint."

"And you didn't mention it to me?" Evie scoffed in disbelief, though it turned to excitement, "Get high. Go to the bonfire. It'll be okay, no matter what happens."

"I don't know-"

"It's summer, Via, it only happens once a year." Evie encouraged, before hanging up, "Enjoy it!"

Olivia was left alone in her bedroom in complete silence. She grabbed a light blue dress from her wardrobe, leaving her blonde hair down, and putting on her black converse. She had to admit, the weed was stronger than she expected- she hadn't gotten high in a while due to what happened last summer. Olivia just had to pretend she wasn't high, which was easier said then done.

Susannah spoke as soon as she heard her daughter walk downstairs, "The brownies are in-" She paused, as Via walked into the kitchen, "You look very fancy for a movie night."

"Uh, about the movie night... Jere said I could go to the Bonfire with him." Via lied, trying to act as normal as possible, "Uh, I'll be here for the next movie night."

Susannah looked at Laurel before sighing. Her mom smiled slightly, "Okay, go and have fun. Stay with your brother, understand?"

"Yes, mom." Via slurred, as Susannah kissed the top of her head, "Love you."

Steven walked passed the kitchen with Jeremiah, "First Bonfire of the summer!"

Jere peered into the kitchen, waving goodbye to the moms, before noticing his sister. He frowned, "What's with the dress, Ollie?"

"I'm going to the Bonfire with you." Via explained, knowing her brother had no idea what was happening.

Jere questioned, "What?"

"You said I could come..." Via gave him a look, "Remember?"

Thankfully, Jere caught onto the lie, "Oh, yeah! Yeah, of course. Come on then."

Laurel frowned as they left the room, looking at Susannah, "Is she okay?"

Jere walked outside to find Steven teasing Belly about the Bonfire, as he turned to his own sister. He whispered, "You're welcome."

"You owed me for the amount of times I had to lie for you when you snuck out to see Clay Bertolet." Via replied smartly, "But, thank you."

Jeremiah drove the group, minus Belly, to the annual Bonfire and, despite being told to stick with her brothers, Via decided to go off alone. She wasn't surprised when she managed to easily find a group of teenagers smoking, so brought one for herself.

Olivia sat alone on a log throughout the night, drinking beer and smoking weed was the only company she had. She liked being alone, yet she hated feeling alone. Via watched all of the clingy couples kiss and dance, wondering what Evie would do if she was here- but she wasn't. Olivia was alone.

She kept a mental count of how many boys she had said fuck off to; Olivia sighed when she saw another boy heading towards her. She kept her eyes on the sand, as the boy sat down next to her.

Olivia slurred, "Fuck off."

"Hey." The boy's voice was muffled and distorted due to the multiple beers she had had.

"Fuck off!" Via raised her voice, finally looking up to see that the boy was her brother, Jeremiah. Fuck. She thought, Fuck, fuck, fuck.

"Whoa, hey." Jere raised his hands out in front of him, before cupping the girl's face with his hands, "Are you drunk? Ollie?"

Via exhaled smoke into his face, as he wafted it away with his hands. She slurred something that Jere couldn't even understand. He panicked, "Shit, mom's gonna kill me. We need to go-"

"No.." Via slurred, "I-I need to kiss...B-"

"What?" Jere questioned, brushing the hair out of her face and grabbing the beer bottle out of her hand, "You're not making any sense."

"No! Steven, let go! You're embarrassing me. Let go!"

The twins both turned to face where the familiar shouts were coming from, both of their faces lighting up to the sight of Belly.

Via attempted to stand up, but Jere sat her back down, "No, no, no. You're staying here. Ollie, listen. I'll get Belly to come over here, then I'm getting you some water, okay?"

Via groaned, placing her head in her hands, just wishing she hadn't come. The music boomed, causing her head to throb as she held it tightly in her hands.

"Livy?" Belly questioned, as she sat down next to her. She stroked the girl's hair, tucking it behind her ears, "What happened to the movie night? Jesus, Livy, are you high?"

"And drunk." Via added smartly, as she lifted her head up to look at her. She paused, before slurring, "Belly, Belly, Belly."

"I'm right here." Belly reassured, her voice almost soothing the headache that Via had. Belly wiped away the slightly smudged mascara from the girl's face, "Have you been crying?"

"I don't cry. Never ever." The girl slurred, her blue eyes showing her dilated pupils clearly, "But do you- do you know what I have been doing?"

"What have you been doing, Livy?" Belly questioned, waiting patiently as Via tried to make a sentence.

Via smiled, "Thinking... Thinking about you. Do you... Do you know why?"

"Why?" Belly smiled gently, though her features wrinkled with confusion.

Via hesitated, "Because I-"

"Is that Conrad?" Belly interrupted, squinting into the distance at the boy kissing another girl on the sand. She stood up frustratedly, "Livy, I'll be right back. Stay here until Jere comes back, okay?"

Via's smile faded in an instant, as her eyes followed Belly as she stormed over to the two. She muttered, "Because I love you."

Olivia watched the scene through the blur of her tears, swelling in her blue eyes. Her blood boiled, as she watched Belly and Conrad argue. However, the argument didn't last very long, as Jeremiah arrived to break it up.

"Fuck you!" Via heard Belly shout, as Jere guided her away from their brother. Olivia watched from afar, as Belly walked over to the other side of the beach- forgetting about Via who was still sat on the log.

Unfortunately, Via's compulsiveness got the better of her, so the girl stood to her feet quickly. She stumbled over to Conrad and his date, who both drowned at her in confusion.

Conrad frowned, slurring his words slightly, "What are you doing here? You're meant to be at home, with Belly."

"Am I not allowed to leave the fucking house?" Via blurted out frustratedly, as she battled to keep her eyes open because they became heavy.

Conrad frowned protectively, "I knew it. You stole my joint, didn't you? That's why you're here. You think it's funny."

"I think you're a dick." Via retorted sarcastically, as she slurred, "I thought you understood but, of course, you fucking don't."

"What?" Conrad scoffed, pushing her gently away from him, "You need to relax."

Olivia pushed him back harder, causing him to stumble back, "You need to back the fuck off! You don't even like her! You're ruining everything-"

Suddenly, Jeremiah rushed towards his siblings, standing in the middle of them to break it up. He insisted, "Ollie, calm down. Whoa, relax!"

Conrad continued, "What the fuck is your problem?"

"You, cunt!" Via raised her voice, as she shoved Conrad back again. However, as he stumbled back, Conrad collided with Belly and she fell onto the sand. Via panicked, "Belly!"

"See what you've done!" Conrad shouted, as he pointed at Belly, who was being helped up by an unfamiliar boy.

"Cops!" A teenager shouted loudly, as the sound of sirens wailed from the distance. Two police vehicles arrived at the Bonfire, as the party dispersed.

Jere stood in front of her, holding her shoulders tightly, "We're going. Now." He turned to Conrad, "Let's go!"

Via hesitated outside of the car, "I'm not getting into the car with him."

Jere sighed, as he guided Conrad into the back seats, "Get in the car. Watch your head. Legs."

"I know how to get into a car." Conrad grumbled, as he slouched in the backseats.

"Ollie, sit in the front." Jere insisted, "Conrad, stay in the back."

"Okay, mom." Via muttered sarcastically.

Jeremiah looked out of the passenger seat window, seeing Belly and a boy talking. He cleared his throat, "Come on, Belly, get in."

She replied, "I'm sure Cam can give me a ride home, right, Cam?"

"Yes, that's no problem." The boy replied politely.

Jere retorted, "You're not getting in a car with a guy you just met."

The boy stuck his hand through the open window, "I'm Cam-Cameron."

Via scoffed, "Your name is Cam-Cameron?"

"No, just Cam." He smiled nervously, "We actually know each-other from seventh grade. So we're not total strangers."

"No offence, but no." Jeremiah smiled, "Belly, get in the car."

Conrad added, "Belly, just get in the car."

"I'm sorry, is there an echo in here?" Via questioned sarcastically, turning around to her brother, who stuck his middle fingers up at her.

Jere stopped her from turning around, "Can you stop arguing for two minutes?"

Olivia sighed, staring out of her window, watching the two awkwardly flirt with each other. Her eyes flickered between them, as they kissed for a moment. Via quickly looked away, avoiding eye contact and pretending like she didn't care- but she did. Her heart ached in her chest, as the world around her span in circles. Her eyes became heavy again, as Via drifted in and out of consciousness. Olivia felt awful.

Belly sat in the seat behind her, as Jere started driving. Suddenly, he stopped the car quickly, causing Via's body to jolt forward. She groaned, "Jere!"

"Fuck! Steven. I'll be right back." Jeremiah rushed out, "Stay here!"

"Fuck." Via muttered, as she rubbed her chest. She unbuckled her seatbelt, which gained Belly's attention.

She worried, sitting forward, "Hey, what's wrong?"

Olivia opened the car quickly, stumbling out in panic. Belly didn't hesitate to follow the girl out of the vehicle, standing behind her closely as the girl vomited onto the ground. Belly held her blonde hair back, as she reassured, "It's okay. It's okay."

Suddenly, a police officer rushed over to the vehicle, peering inside of the window to see Conrad passed out. The officer asked the girls, "Have you kids been drinking?"

The two girls made eye contact for a moment, before Via sighed, "Shit."
