iii. the poe cup apology
chapter three!
•••
REGRET WAS AN EMOTION THAT KAMDEN USUALLY DIDN'T WASTE TIME WITH.
She knew that it was just something that lead to pointless worrying and fretting over little things that never actually mattered. If somebody said or did something that she took offense to, she reminded herself that they probably didn't belong in her life anyways.
And if it was something that she did or said that she was regretting, she probably meant it and couldn't take it back anyways. Regret is a waste of space in one's brain.
But all day long, even as she tried to focus on her classwork, she could't tear her mind away from Wednesday nor ease the remorsful tug on her heartstrings when she thought about how they left things. She couldn't seem to let it go as easily as she had with other things in the past.
So, once the final bell had rung, she found herself marching through the large, seemingly endless halls of Nevermore, looking for the one person that had been plaguing her mind since they had met.
Stepping out into the chilled autumn air, Kamden looked around the usually buslting school grounds, only to find it void of all people. Furrowing her brow, she racked her brain for a reason that the area might've been vacated, only to find out that it wasn't completly abandoned when somebody bumped into her from behind.
She faced the stranger, who was rushing to apologize. "I'm so sorry! I'm in a rush to get to the Poe Cup, and I'm behind-" The small, fluffy-haired boy with glasses blurted.
"What's your name?" Kamden cut him off, and the boy blinked at her for a moment.
"Uh...Eugene."
"It's nice to meet you. I'm Kamden. I was gonna go watch the race too." Kamden lied, proud of herself for improving her 'playing along' skills. "Wanna walk over there together?"
"Sure!" He was eager, and hurried to lead the way down to the lake. Kamden was grateful for his leadership, because she had no idea where the lake was, and had completly forgotten about the Poe Cup entirely.
"I'm gonna go look for someone, I'll see you around, Eugene." She informed him once the two of them had reached the bank, which was packed with a large crowd of students. She waited for a nod from her new friend, and then she was off, only one thing, or rather, person on her mind.
It didn't take long to find the raven-haired girl, Kamden being able to spot those two braids and mystifying aura through the mob. She pushed past some spectators until she stepped out into the open, approaching the lapping waves, up to the boat where Wednesday was seated, an oar in hand.
"Hey, Wednesday? Can I talk to you?" Kamden tucked her arms over her stomach, suddenly feeling exposed, like everyone's eyes were on her.
"I thought I told you not to do that." Wednesday glared up at her through her bangs.
"Yeah, well, I'm ignoring your request."
"I'm busy right now, we can talk later."
"You're just trying to get me to go away, aren't you?"
"Maybe."
Kamden sighed, dropping her gaze down to the dirt, pushing a pebble down into the earth with the toe of her combat boot.
"I really am busy, Kamden." Wednesday said, flatly.
"Look, I'm really sorry about last night." Kamden hurried to say what she had been trying to perfect all day long. "I know that I ruined things for you, and I didn't mean to. I don't want you to be mad at me, and I want us to still be friends-"
"It's about to start-" Wednesday tried to cut the flustered red-head off, but she was unsuccesful.
"-I don't have to help you solve your little mystery or whatever, I don't even want to anymore, I just....I just want you to-"
"Kamden? Kamden! Hey!" Wednesday pushed herself up out of the boat, getting eye level with Kamden, who was slightly out of breath from her rambling, but had stopped talking at last.
Tearing her eyes from Wednesday's deep brown one's, Kamden let her gaze desend down to her hands, which had once been flailing as she babbled, but had been stilled by a smaller, cold hand being pressed on top.
Wednesday yanked her hand back, jolting as if the gesture had been unintentional, her eyes widening in subtle panic. "You can come by my dorm at six'o'clock sharp. We'll talk then." She cleared her throat and slowly, avoiding eye contact as if embarassed, lowered herself back down to her seat in the boat. "You should go, the event's about to start."
This time, Kamden didn't point out that Wedsnesday had told her to leave once again, she simply nodded and did as she was told. She pushed her way back through the crowd, pausing to say goodbye to Eugene, before she disapeared back into the unusually quiet school.
The hours couldn't have passed any slower for her, as she had gone back up to her own dorm to wait out her highly anticipatory chat with Wednesday. She hadn't felt like staying to watch the Poe Cup, sports weren't really her thing, plus she had too much on her mind to focus on anything else.
Her hand felt like it was still vibrating from the short, yet comforting, contact earlier that afternoon. It felt as though there had been some kind of electricial current shared between both girls.
Finally, her bedside clock struck five fifty, and she got up to leave, saying a quick goodbye to her vampire roommate. Ophelia Hall wasn't too far of a hike for Kamden, and before she knew it, she was knocking on the door. Her heart was thumping strong in her ears, and her palms were unnaturally sweaty, and she couldn't really think of a reason.
The large, wooden door creaked open, revealing Wednesday standing in the doorway.
"Hey," Kamden breathed.
"Come in." Wednesday skipped an introduction, moving out of the way so Kamden could step inside before closing the heavy door behind her.
"I heard you guys won." Kamden offered a polite, awkward smile. "That's really...awesome."
"Don't act like you care about that sort of thing." Wednesday crossed the room, going over to her desk and sitting down. "I can see it in your eyes, you couldn't be more bored. And normally I would feel the same, but I needed to enact some revenge."
Kamden scoffed, covering her stomach with her arms, standing warily in the entrance.
"Come over here." Wednesday spoke like it was the obious thing to do, and Kamden hurried to comply. She came up behind and hovered over Wednesday, and the dark-haired girl pulled one of the drawers in her desk open.
Inside, resting on top of some miscellaneous files and articles, was a piece of paper. The waethered page was decorated by an intricate drawing, and one side was shredded slighlty,
like it had been torn out of a book.
The drawing depicted a burning cathedal-like space, the stone pillars and statues having gone up in flames. Admist the chaos of the inferno, in the center of the paper, was a girl.
A girl with two pigtail braids.
"Whoa." Kamden sucked in a breath, leaning in to get a closer look, forcing herself to ignore how her and Wednesday's shoulders bumped together. "Is that you?"
"I fear so, yes." Wednesday nodded.
Kamden turned her head slightly to look her in the eye. "I thought you didn't want me to be apart of your investigation anymore."
Slowly, Wednesday looked up at her, and Kamden could've sworn that she caught a glimpse of a shimmer in the usually dark, hollow pupils.
"I've changed my mind."
