Chapter one

 Chapter one

You breathe deeply, closing your eyes. A familiar calm washes over you, and you sigh blissfully. Opening your eyes you see a never-ending darkness; something you're very accustomed to seeing. This darkness is your home- all you've ever known.

It's evil, cold, and unforgiving, yet you've accepted it into your life, allowing it refuge in your once-kind heart. It's taken over most of your being in the few decades it's been with you, leaving only a small fraction of that kindness in your heart unscathed.

Through thick and thin, this darkness has been at your side, never truly fading despite your change of heart. It will always be with you; it's a part of you. It walks hand in hand with your kindness, your humanity, the pair working together to wield you even more power than imaginable.

Now, you're safe, you're sound. No harm shall come to you anymore, for you have found true happiness.

A new feeling flows past.

It's warm.

Almost hot.

You open your eyes and look around, surprised to see a bright light illuminating the darkness. You try to move away, but find you go nowhere. The darkness, your home, begins to diminish, making room for this new place. You scream, your voice unheard by anyone or anything. You see your humanity -your everything- vanish before your very eyes, replaced with golden-blue light and a high pitched ringing.

SPN Time: During 'I Think I'm Gonna Like It Here' (9x1)

Alex woke in a cold sweat, jolting upright in bed. The room was dark, the alarm clock beside the bed reading just a few hours after Alex had gone to bed with Gabriel. Looking around, it seemed the archangel was nowhere to be seen.

"Gabe?" Alex climbed out of bed, still shaking, and headed out of the room in search of her celestial boyfriend. Hearing her movement, Leo awoke, joining her on her search. "Gabriel?" Alex repeated, wrapping her arms around herself as she entered the dark kitchen. She approached the fridge and frowned at a sticky note on it, just barely able to read it by the light shining through a window over the sink:

'Food run- be back soon :)'

Alex pulled open the refrigerator door, sighing at the fully-stocked shelves. Liar. Letting the door shut by itself, Alex turned towards the small window over the sink, looking up at the starry sky. Everything was peaceful and silent, yet Alex found herself worrying about her dream.

It was almost a year after everything that had happened with Dantalion. Since then, Alex hadn't talked to the Winchesters or her father, yet she heard they settled things with the Leviathans escaping just after her ordeal with Dantalion. Crowley's whereabouts were unknown, and frankly, Alex didn't care. He could handle himself; he didn't need her help.

The dream she'd had was strange, and she had no idea why she had it. She was fully healed from becoming human, and she no longer had her memories of the cage. There was no reason for her to have strange, foreshadowing, dreams.

All she could hope was it was just that- a dream. No hidden meanings or messages. But she knew that was unlikely. When is anything 'just nothing'?

Looking away from the window, Alex groaned as her head began to ache. Walking forward only made it worse, the muted colors of the dark apartment blurring together. She braced herself on the marble counter, trying to regain her composure. "What...-" She was cut off as a bright light broke out in the sky, illuminating the room.

Focusing her blurry gaze out the window, Alex gasped at the sight. Several more bursts of light appeared, almost looking like comets. "What the hell?" She jumped back as one of the 'comets' crashed down several yards away in the parking lot below, causing several car alarms to go off. Leo whimpered, running to hide under the kitchen table.

"What the hell was that?!" Alex's headache was getting worse.

"Angels." Gabriel appeared in the room, wincing and falling against the counter as he spoke.

Alex gasped and ran over to him despite her pain,"Gabe?! Are you okay? What happened?!" She placed a hand on his shoulder, only to pull back as she was burned, "You're...hot?"

"Thanks," Gabriel smirked weakly, depending on the counter to pull himself up.

Alex frowned, then continued to worry, "Really, Gabriel, what the hell happened? Where the hell did you go?"

"I had to check on something, seems I was right," Gabriel answered, panting.

"Why didn't you say that instead of lying?!"

"I was kinda hoping you wouldn't wake up," Gabriel admitted. "But we have bigger issues right now."

Alex rolled her eyes, helping the archangel to a kitchen chair. She looked him over, "Geez, your shirt's ruined. How did this happen?" Almost the entire back of the dark button-up was burnt away.

"Well it was a bit of a rough landing," Gabriel began unbuttoning the shirt, tossing it aside afterward. "Long story short, everyone was kicked out of Heaven."

"What does that mean? 'Kicked out of Heaven'?" Alex asked, turning on a light and inspecting his back. It was covered in burn marks, especially on his shoulder blades.

"An angel cast a spell, making all the angels fall from Heaven, me included."

"But you weren't in Heaven, were you?" Alex left the room for a moment to grab a first-aid kit.

"No, but I was mid-flight," Gabriel spoke, wincing as Alex poured alcohol onto his wounds. "Everything was fine, then suddenly I was falling. Hey, what are you doing, anyway? I could just heal myself, yanno."

"Can you?"

"Ahm...yeah, 'course I can," Gabriel huffed, crossing his arms and attempting to heal himself. Nothing happened. Frowning, he tried again. Still nothing. No glow, no bright light- nothing.

"This is serious, Gabriel," Alex scolded. "If the angels fell, then..." She shook her head, lost. "What does that even mean?"

"It means there's a bunch of lost and confused angels floating around, all looking for vessels," Gabriel said, standing despite his body's and Alex's protests. "Which means we need to go." He added with a chuckle, "We'd both make great vessels."

"Where are we going to go? We're already in hiding, there's not much farther off the map to go," Alex crossed her arms. She didn't want to pack up and leave again.

"I'll figure something out, but we can't stay here."

"What's the issue anyway? Angels can't posses without consent, right?"

"Right, but, I'm an archangel as well. This vessel is perfect; if it can contain me, it can contain any angel. Don't doubt what angels will do to get what they want," Gabriel warned. He glanced around the room and sighed, "Well, hurry up and pack. I can't fly, so you'll have to teleport us somewhere."

"You can't?" Alex frowned, her brows furrowed in confusion. "Why not?"

Gabriel breathed deeply, and closed his eyes. A golden light filled the room, paired with a high pitched ringing as a shadow cast itself on the wall behind the archangel. Large wings formed in the shadow, but something was wrong. They were broken, feathers missing everywhere, some only just falling off and floating to the ground.

"Your wings..." Alex inhaled sharply, covering her mouth with her hands. She could feel her headache growing stronger just looking at him, but she pushed it away, more concerned about Gabriel.

Letting his wings fade, Gabriel nodded sadly, "Yeah. It's best if I save up my energy for now. I can already feel my power draining from being cut off from Heaven."

"Right. Ok then, let's go," Alex decided, her worry growing as quickly as the pain in her head. "Leo, come on buddy." The hellhound padded over, reluctant to leave his hiding spot. Looking Gabriel over again Alex paused, grabbing the first aid kit; she'd take care of his wounds once they were somewhere safe.

"Have anywhere in mind?" Gabriel asked as Alex grabbed Leo's leash.

"Yeah, one of my dad's old hideouts. It should be abandoned, but if not it's fine. More security isn't a bad thing, right?" Alex said, attaching the leash to Leo's collar.

"As long as they don't try to kill us, sure."

"They won't, I'll make sure of it." Alex assured, then placed her hand on Gabriel's shoulder, the trio vanishing from the apartment.
