Chapter nine
Chapter nine
"So, your only lead is a lump of cat fur?" Gabriel asked over the phone, curiosity and confusion in his tone.
"Yep. I have no idea what I'm hunting." Alex sighed, closing another dead-end lore book. She hadn't found any monster that was cat-related and fit the scenario, yet. "Know anything that might fit?"
"Ah, no. Not really. Have you checked up on gods? Pagan, Greek, they might some kind of cat-god."
"Hm... How 'bout I just look up 'Cat-God'? That might have something," Alex laughed, typing the words into her laptop's search bar. After several hilarious edits of cats in place of actual God, Alex found a link that led to a Wikipedia page titled 'Bastet'. "Bastet ring any bells?" She asked Gabriel as she clicked the link.
"The Egyptian Goddess of Cats? Huh, I'm surprised I didn't think of that."
"I'm not," Alex spoke bluntly as she skimmed the page. "You haven't been the brightest bulb recently."
"Hey!" Gabriel frowned on the other end of the line.
"What?" Alex smiled. She read through the article more, but nothing of much use came up. "I'll call you again in a bit, alright? I've got to figure out how to kill an Egyptian god now. Love you~."
"Yeah, alright. I love you too."

"How about a change of office?"
I looked up from my desk with wide eyes, "Really? Of course, I'll take it!" Were the other superiors finally aware of my distaste for staying in Heaven all the time?
Haziel shook her head, "Alright, fine. You can switch with me, then. You get to watch over the mud-monkeys, and I'll keep track of souls... I still don't understand why you want to do this..."
"The superiors didn't ask you to do this?" Haziel was willing to risk getting in trouble for me, how sweet! Yet she still annoyed me, "Don't call them that! Our job is and always will be to protect the humans. How could I not love them?"
"You're emotions are irrelevant. Once a week we will do this switch, no more, no less. Understand? That is the only way no one will notice." Haziel spoke in her usual serious tone. If only she'd lighten up a bit...
"I understand. Thank you, Haziel!"

Alex lifted her groggy head from her laptop's keyboard. Groaning, she checked her phone for the time. It was well past midnight. "So much for getting this hunt done tonight..." Alex sat up properly and woke her laptop up. She'd been in the middle of research when she'd fallen asleep- obviously bored. Her search wasn't revealing any useful information anyway. She had no idea how to kill an Egyptian god, nor much about Bastet besides the fact that she was the goddess of cats and was the daughter of Ra.
Suddenly, the police scanner Alex had set up beside her laptop turned on, static filling the speakers. "D-Delta 39 to dispatch, all clear?" Alex didn't bother paying much attention, continuing to read another article on Egyptian gods.
"Go ahead, Delta 39." Came the reply.
"I-I've got a problem. A-Ah, 10-91V. Requesting backup."
Alex raised her head, blinking at the police scanner. "What's 10-91 again? An animal? So, vicious animal?" She turned the volume up, listening for the address. The officer reporting the animals spoke of an animal shelter, and said there were several freed cats. "Cats, huh?" She sighed and closed up her laptop, shoving it into it's case along with a few other things. What the hell is Bastet doing with all these cats?
~(A/N- I have no idea how to talk in police talk but I tried lmao all I know is the fancy code things thanks to google)
Upon arriving at the animal shelter, Alex was introduced to the sheriff of the town- nearly exposing the fact that she wasn't real FBI. The sheriff informed her of the state of the most recent victims. They all had their throats and eyes clawed violently, just like the last victims. The only difference was that the shelter's manager had died of a heart attack before his throat was clawed out.
Alex then headed inside the shelter, inspecting everything. Although she knew what was causing it, she still had no idea how to take care of it. She couldn't track Bastet. With this, it was clear her targets were random. "Well, whatever." Alex shrugged, deciding to go back to her hotel room empty-handed.
As Alex walked back to her care, she felt the familiar wave of power she'd felt when Abaddon had attacked her days before. The antichirst looked around, hoping she wouldn't actally find the angry ginger. Yet to her dismay, she did.
"Aw, come on," Alex complained, turning to the Knight of Hell dramatically. "I'm on a hunt, can't you wait to kill me later?"
"Oh, you mean Bastet?" Abaddon strolled forward until she was just a few feet away from Alex. "I already killed her. Sorry."
Alex huffed, "'Course you did." She crossed her arms, "Whatever. What do you want? I already told you I don't want Hell."
"But you're still a threat." Abaddon took yet another step closer. "And a great way to lure Crowley out."
"You know he left me to rot in Hell, right? He doesn't care. He's too much of a chicken to do anything."
"And you're different?" Abaddon raised an eyebrow. "In our last fight you tucked tail and ran the second you realized you couldn't kill me." Another step. The gap between the females grew even smaller.
Alex took a step back, "Hey, I don't swing that way you know. Back off."
Abaddon merely laughed, raising a band to signal to someone behind Alex.
Crap. Alex's eyes widened and she whirled around just in time to see a demon smack her in the head with a baton they'd stolen from a nearby officer.
