Chapter 8
Nut jobs!
If beating up someone without getting into trouble was possible, Jimin would have gladly done that. Sadly, he wasn't in uni anymore, where such fights were brushed off because the ones he fought against believed in settling things with fists. Well, in uni they had their own rules. Whenever they disagreed, they settled matters with fists, where locker rooms were their fighting ground and the loser accepted his fate with pride. Nothing too outrageous, of course. Yoongi hyung would have his hide if that was the case. They were careful. Punches were thrown, often not enough to draw blood. The first person to tap out or pinned to the floor with no way of escape loses.
Jimin often thought choosing this line of career was a sick joke played by God and his father. How did he even allow himself to be convinced? Because it tested every bit of his restraints and after only two years, he decided he can't survive in courtrooms. Not without punching someone. He was now happy with his current position in Vinora, where he had to handle only legal matters related to Vinora and sometimes that associated with Min Group.
His blood had boiled with rage when he received the detailed email from his father last night. It had been a week since his last call with Mr. Wang. He was avoiding every email and phone call because he wanted to know the real reason.
What he didn't expect was for the Jeon attorneys to track him to California, demanding they allowed them to meet Jeong-seon. As he glared at them, hands fisting on his lap, he contemplated throwing them out. But he held back because they hadn't given him a reason to do so yet.
"Mr. Park, you haven't returned any of our calls or emails. It's highly unethical. This is really important," Wang's assistant, who introduced himself as Jay said.
"And I clearly stated, I do not know her whereabouts. My father is no longer her legal guardian."
Jay laughed. "Now you know that's a lie. You grew up together and went to the same school," Jay insisted, causing Jimin to narrow his eyes. "Mr. Jeon is aware that Ms. Jeon grew up in your family home in Seoul. Your father fired the caretaker Mr. Jeon hired." Jay looked smug and Jimin clenched his jaw biting back a retort. He decided to let them talk first. "Your family moved to California seventeen years ago. It's the same time as she transferred to a different school. We have a good reason to believe you're still in touch and you very well know where she is."
Jimin leaned back, crossing his knees, cocking his head to the side. "Doesn't mean I have to tell you," he said mirroring Jay's smug face. No one knew the real identity of Jeong-seon except for his father and their close group of friends. Katy adopted an American name as soon as they shifted here. In fact, she was now in the exact same room as the motherfuckers, but they wouldn't know. Katy took after her Indian mother with big almond-shaped eyes, her skin the color of wheat, and dark brown hair. No one ever thought about the possibility of her father being a Korean.
"Mr. Park—"
"You haven't given me a reason other than saying it's important. Why do you want to see her?" Jimin briefly glanced at Katy, who was sitting on the couch behind the gentlemen, nursing her herbal tea, eyes on her laptop but attention solely on them.
Jay and the other guy named Hyun shared a look. Jay licked his lips. "We can only reveal that to her."
Jimin leaned forward on his elbows, resting his chin on his intertwined fingers. He regarded them for a long moment. "Good luck talking to her." He grinned, then pointed at the door. "You may leave."
"Mr. Park, you can't do that. We demand to meet Ms. Jeon. You cannot hide one of the heirs to the Jeon Corporation. This matter concerns her safety. We will go to court if needed."
At that, Jimin lifted a brow, a smirk lifted a corner of his mouth. "Oh, really? As her attorney, I say you aren't getting anywhere near her until I evaluate the situation and of course, she will decide if she wants to meet you or not."
Jay regarded him for a long moment and Jimin met his gaze, both not relenting. A tense moment later, Jay's shoulder slumped. "Mr. Jeon's son is taking over the company in a few months. He wants Ms. Jeon to sign a few documents to ensure a smooth transition."
Jimin leaned back, rocking his chair back and forth. "What if she doesn't want to sign anything?"
"Mr. Park, you wanted to know the reason and we gave you that. Mr. Jeon has a proposition to offer, which we can only discuss with her. Now when can you arrange this meeting?"
Jimin shrugged. "I'll talk to her."
"Can you do that now?" Jay pushed and Jimin's anger flared.
"Why would I do that?"
"Mr. Park—"
"It doesn't work that way, Mr..."
"Sung," Jay gritted through his teeth. "We don't have time, Mr. Park. She needs to be in Seoul next week to attend the Jeon annual event."
Jimin burst into laughter. "Not happening. Mr. Jeon and Ms. Jeon are not on talking terms. Honestly, the man hasn't met his daughter even once. What rights does this man have to demand her to go to Seoul?"
"She's still his daughter," Jay stressed. "Our client has been a responsible father. He set up a trust fund and appointed a legal guardian. Mr. Jeon has every right to meet his daughter."
"No, he doesn't. My client is twenty-seven and no one can force her to do something she doesn't want to."
"She can't just cut ties and walk away," Jay hissed. "She's family."
Jimin threw a lazy glance. "Oh, she can and she will," he said. "Wanna try?"
"Don't think you can hide her from her father. I'm sure you will have no option but to produce her in the court if we filed a writ," Jay challenged.
"And I'd like to see how it will go down. I'm sure the press would love the drama," Jimin smirked. As much as Jeon could file a writ, he could also not afford the publicity that came along with it. Jimin might have keened before he knew the truth, but now that he knew why Jeon wanted Katy all of a sudden, he knew they had an upper hand.
The men cursed in Korean. "This is not happening. The press release has gone out. She has to be there next week," Jay said to Hyun in Korean.
"What do we do now? We can't say this to Wang-nim," Hyun replied. "Convince him. We can't leave without meeting her and we have to bring her with us."
"As I said, you'll receive a call from my office once I heard back from Ms. Jeon." Jimin switched to Korean causing the men's eyes to go wide. He lifted a brow noticing their surprise. Right. He migrated to America, but it doesn't mean he had forgotten his roots. He was still well versed in his mother tongue. It was bold of them to assume otherwise. His father still ran his law firm in Korea. "If that's all...I have a meeting in..." he checked his wristwatch, "...ten minutes." He stood and grabbed his coat. "See you later, gentlemen."
The two men stood, bowed with an awkward expression before filing out of his office. Jimin huffed under his breath. "Assholes."
Katy closed the lid of her laptop and sighed. "That went well." Then she began laughing. "It was fun. I was right here and they didn't even know."
Jimin laughed along and slung a hand over her shoulder, feeling light-hearted that she was able to laugh this off. He strode to the couch. "Come on, Jeoni. Let's head to Aera's office before she sets fire to my office for delaying this information." When Jeong-seon became Katy seventeen years ago, it was hard for them to switch back. So, the nickname they gave her since kindergarten stuck. Only they were allowed to call her that though.
"Right." She jumped to her feet, abandoning her laptop on his coffee table before looping her hand around his elbow.
Soon they were entering Aera's modern contemporary design office on the fifty-sixth floor, which was entirely different from that of the others. Unlike Katy's Zen-inspired one or Porshiya's artistic one, this was a mix of Vinora's brand colors bright purple, red and blue with a huge jellyfish chandelier in the middle. Floor to ceiling windows with killer views, interior lights with purple undertones it was Aera's world. A few of Tae and Porshiya's paintings decorated the walls.
Jimin often wondered how different and same they were at the same time. Each had a different taste, but they were one in so many aspects. While Jimin preferred simple yet elegant things, Porshiya and Tae always went for extravagant things that were both artistic yet luxurious. Aera and Katy preferred comfort to luxury.
"Babe!" Katy was running to Aera with a huge grin as soon as they entered.
"Bubble, I missed you." Aera jumped to her feet, hugging Katy.
"Hey, what about me?" Porshiya grumbled, narrowing her gaze with a pout before being tackled by both Aera and Katy.
Jimin rolled his eyes. They behaved as if they didn't wake up in the same bed this morning. But then nothing was new. They have been like this since childhood, a bunch of crackheads, goofing around.
"Where's Tae?" Jimin looked around, finding him dozing off on the couch. With a huff, he strode to his soulmate sprawled on the couch. "TaeTae wake up."
Tae grunted but didn't move.
"Come on, baby bear," Jimin poked his thigh. "We need to plan a murder."
Tae was up in a moment, eyes wide. "Who are we killing?"
"Jeoni's dad. Who else?" Aera plopped on the other couch, Katy and Porshiya following suit.
Jimin sat beside Tae, who pulled him into a bear hug, resting his chin on Jimin's shoulder. ", So, my dad emailed me last night."
No one spoke a word. They were looking at him expectantly, waiting for him to finish. It was one of the aspects of their friendship. They always listened.
"Jeoni's grandfather has a will. Now, before you ask, he died before Jeoni was even born. But according to his will, he left the inheritance to Jungwoo's children."
Everyone's eyes widened at that part. Why would he do that? An unspoken question hung in the air.
"My dad said that Jungwoo used to be a fuck boy and his marriage with Jungkook's mother was only a business alliance. He didn't stop fucking around even after their marriage, so his father made sure Jungwoo inherited none of their assets. The properties, business, and liquid assets would go to Jungwoo's children when they turned twenty-five."
"Jeoni turned twenty-five two years ago."
Jimin smiled. "But Jungkook turned twenty-five this year, which is when the attorney who was in charge of the will, showed up to Jungwoo. But the problem is...Jungwoo wasn't expecting this. He thought he will inherit the company once Jungkook turned twenty-five."
"And the attorneys today said he has a proposition for me because Jungkook is taking over the business in a few months," Katy said.
"This is fishy," Taehyung scrunched his nose. "Is he trying to pay her off or something? Cos' this sure sounds like that."
"Mhm..." Jimin nodded. "They said something about a press release and want her there next week to attend the annual event of the Jeon Corporation."
"Tell me this..." Tae trailed off. "Doesn't it mean he's accepting to the public that he has a daughter if she appeared in their annual event? Why is he doing this now?"
"I agree with Tae," Aera spoke up. "He wants her to sign some documents so Jungkook can take over. But what do these documents say?"
"Can't he send those documents in secret and get this over with?" Porshiya added. "Why does he want her there? In public I mean?"
"I know." Jimin leaned more into Tae's embrace. "Dad is digging and I'm hoping to have more information before we touch down in Seoul."
"Do you know they started talking in Korean thinking our Jiminie won't understand," Katy cracked up. "It was so funny."
"Really?" Tae laughed out loud. "I'd have loved to see that."
"It would have worked with Jeoni, but not with us," Porshiya chuckled.
"Hey! I can understand Korean. But I refuse to speak it," Katy huffed.
"Oh, come on, sweetie. We all know you suck in Korean and don't even know how to use chopsticks," Aera countered.
"That's because my Indian mama didn't raise me a Korean."
"Your Indian mama didn't raise you at all, bubble. My eomma did," Aera responded with a pointer finger directed at her. "She gave up on chopstick because you kept dropping food and couldn't use it even if your life depended on it."
"Not my fault I was able to get away with my charming abilities. Eomma loves me more than you," Katy shot with a smug look.
Jimin laughed. While Aera was forced to learn Korean and all the etiquettes as a part of their tradition, Katy always slipped right under their nose with her aegyo and big round eyes while pouting. It was impossible to get her to do something she didn't want to. She could understand Korean, but she barely spoke a few words unless they were in some official event that required her to speak. Katy was full and full American now.
"Can't disagree with that," Tae piped in. "She's the baby of the family after all. You spoil her rotten."
"Her aegyo is ugly. I don't know what eomma sees in that," Aera screwed her face.
"Hey, my aegyo is the best."
"No. Jiminie has the best aegyo, next comes panda and Tae."
"Guys, can you focus?" Jimin broke them with a stern gaze. "As much as fun this conversation is, we have something serious to discuss."
"My decision is final. I'm not going to Seoul," Katy sprawled on Porshiya's lap, hiding her face.
"But you're going to Seoul for the fashion week," Tae reminded. "Actually, you're going to be there for longer this time."
"Yeah, I'm working. Doesn't mean I have to meet them."
"And you're meeting Hoseok," Porshiya supplied.
"I am. I'm following Tae's advice. I'm getting my man back."
"Don't do anything drastic until I get him to sign a post-nup," Jimin ran his hands through his hair. "And just don't reveal your connection with Min Group yet. Jeon is a business rival and I don't think they will appreciate the fact that you're a key shareholder and an heir to their enemy's business empire."
"I won't," Katy promised. "To him, I'll just be the Jeoni he met in the streets of Vegas. Nothing more or nothing less." A soft smile stretched her lips. "And to me he will just be Hobi, not the CEO of Jung Group."
Jimin gave her tight-lipped smile. "It's settled then."
