Chapter 19
"You look happier," Hoseok observed as he entered the office, dismissing Jungkook's assistant with a flick of his finger. She scurried out of the room with a bow toward his direction.
"I am happy," Jungkook admitted, lifting his head to see the deep frown on his face despite the cheeriness in his voice. The youngest straightened. His hyung was pissed. "Serious look doesn't suit you, hyung," he tried to ease the tension. "What's wrong?"
"It's the Mins again," Hoseok grunted, pulling the swivel leather chair beside Jungkook and dropping unceremoniously on it. He ran a hand through his perfectly styled hair, messing it. A few strands fell on his face and he clenched his jaw.
Jungkook fully turned to face him. "What did they do now?"
"Asking what they didn't do will be the right question," Hoseok growled.
Jungkook frowned. They never had so much trouble with the Mins before. Though they were competitors, the competition was fair. But with the new change in the management things were going downhill.
"The business magazines are catching on," Hoseok continued, typing something on his phone and pushing the device toward Jungkook. "Apparently, there is a major change in the top management and everything is fucked up."
Min Group announces a new CEO for their Asian division.
One article read.
The Min heiress takes over the business empire in an unexpected turn of events.
Min Yoongi is rumored to be the next Chairman of the group as the current chairman teases early retirement plans in his recent interview.
Min Group taking over the industry by storm. Are they trying to monopolize the construction industry?
Jungkook swiftly scanned the articles. He was aware of the changes in the Min Group and the sudden arrival of the notorious Min heirs. They were new and there wasn't a single photo of them online.
Here's everything you have to know about the Min heiresses.
The youngest scoffed. The article was trash and it said nothing useful except for their names. As far as Jungkook know, Kim Namjoon was back and he was the Co-CEO along with Min Aera.
"What's new?" The youngest asked. "I'm aware of this." He returned the phone to Hoseok.
"Yoongi's younger sisters have taken over the Asian division," Hoseok stated the obvious. "Apparently they're spoiled brats. There are rumors and they don't even know who the third heir is."
"Since when did you start reading the tabloids," Jungkook scoffed. "They're full of shit."
For the first time of the day, there was a real smile on Hoseok's face. "I know," he agreed. "Actually, that wasn't what I came here for. I'm just pissed to see their name everywhere I turn." He sighed lacing his fingers behind his head. "The investors are growing restless. I had a call with two of them this morning. We need a contingency plan. At this rate, our resources will be stagnant and our stock values will take a nosedive."
The youngest nodded in understanding. "I already devised a plan to solve this. But I need your help to pull this through."
"A plan?" Hoseok scooted closer.
"Yeah. We need to arrange a meeting with them."
"The Mins?"
Jungkook nodded in affirmation.
His hyung arched a perfectly groomed brow. "And?"
"I have a proposal for them." He turned to his computer screen, quickly typing and pulling the document he was carefully working on for the past two days.
Hoseok leaned, eyes skimming over the documents. His first reaction was to gasp. "Are you crazy? Your father will never allow something like that," he hissed.
"But this is the only way, hyung. I have to at least try," Jungkook insisted.
"Min group can handle this on their own. They have both money and resources. Why would they even agree to our proposal?" he asked. "We are competitors. This will never work."
"Hyung, I agree we are competitors. But I really thought about this. All our ongoing projects are nearing completion and we have literally nothing for the next quarter. With Min group nailing all the latest tenders, we are scavenging for leftovers and it's not much. Our workers will suffer, we will suffer."
Hoseok gritted his teeth. The frown was back on his face.
"I know why you're furious. Hyung, listen to me. Min group need us now. Despite what's happening, they can't do it. According to my sources, they don't have enough resources to pull this off."
"Go on." Hoseok tilted his head.
"They'll need to hire more workers to execute the projects and the time is too short. The Southern highway and the Eastern market project are on hold because of this."
A frown tugged at the corners of Hoseok's mouth. "So? That's none of our concern. They shouldn't be even taking on the projects if they can't handle it."
Jungkook shook his head. "You're missing a point here. The reason why they're suddenly interested in things they weren't interested before is definitely an alarming factor. One, they want to take over the market. Two, they're trying something big. We did not see this coming. Three, the Chans are on the move. They're tying up with local builders and so on," Jungkook said, hoping Hoseok would get the hint. As expected, Hoseok's eyes widened.
"Fuck."
"It's not good, hyung. They're bigger than us. Min group is the real competition to them, but in their current state, they're not in a position to challenge the Chans. And we're in the next position after the Mins. I don't know what's happening with the Mins, but either way it will affect our business."
"I heard one of the Chan representatives met Jungwoo-ssi last week."
"Yes. And dad isn't thinking clearly. He's looking at this opportunity as a means to dethrone the Mins."
"But Chans are despicable and known to monopolize the industry."
"Exactly."
"Means we have to work together with the Mins," Hoseok surmised.
"It's for our own good, hyung. It doesn't have to be permanent. We need these projects to stay afloat and Min group need the resources we can offer."
"How do you think you can pull this off?" Hoseok reclined in his chair. Jungkook could almost see the wheels turning in his head. As much as he didn't want this, Jungkook thought it was business after all. They had to do whatever it took to survive and in his opinion the Mins were far better than the Chans. He knew enough about the Chinese company to know they can't trust them.
"You remember the guy we met last year in the Asian Trade Expo?"
"Kim Namjoon?"
"Yeah. He's here now. I've contacted him this morning. He asked us to submit our proposal so he can take it to the top management."
"Do you think they'll agree?" Hoseok frowned. "From what I know, there are three key shareholders in Min group. Yoongi-ssi and his two siblings. They also hold the top positions within the company. It's not easy. We have been competitor's for too long and let's say we do manage to convince them, their board won't agree to this easily."
"That's why we will need two of the shareholders to sign the agreement," Jungkook stated gleefully.
"Two of them?" Hoseok scoffed. "Impossible. Yoongi is not that easy to convince, Jungkook-ah. Have you even met him? He's a tough nut."
Jungkook shrugged. "I have belief, hyung. We are going to prepare a stellar proposal that they cannot turn their back onto. Then..." he drawled. "We're getting these projects."
"What about your father? He is still the chairman and he will never agree to this."
"I know." Jungkook rubbed his weary eyes. "It's complicated but let's do one thing at a time, yeah?"
Hoseok shook his head. "Even if the Min Group agrees to this, your father still holds the final say in it. We might be the key shareholders, but even if we went together it won't help. The board members will side with your father."
Jungkook opened his mouth to respond when his phone blared. He grabbed the receiver, pressing it to his ears.
"Mr. Jeon, there's a call for you from attorney Mark Rogers. He says he's with the Parks," his assistance informed.
"Park?" Jungkook frowned. Why would an attorney contact him? "Yeah, put him through."
Hoseok tilted his head in question and Jungkook put the call on speaker mode.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Jeon. My name is Mark Rogers and I'm with the Park Law Firm," the attorney introduced himself in fluent English that further intrigued Jungkook.
"Hello, Mr. Rogers. How can I help you today?" The youngest responded.
"I'm sure you're aware of the situation with Ms. Jeon. Your father's attorneys reached out to her with a proposal."
Jungkook shared a look with Hoseok. "I'm aware," was all he said.
"Great. So, Ms. Jeon wishes to speak to you before she responds to your father's proposal."
"Oh. Ah, what does she has to say?" He was suddenly anxious. His nervous gaze flicked to Hoseok.
"My client believes this situation affects you the most than your father. Hence, she's willing to discuss this with you instead."
"Okay?" Jungkook didn't know what he has to say.
"Are you available for a call sometime this week, Mr. Jeon?"
He looked at Hoseok who nodded quickly. "Y-yeah. Sure." He cleared his throat. "Let me know when, I'll clear my schedule."
"Perfect. I'll be in touch with you Mr. Jeon. Have a great day ahead!"
"You too."
Jungkook looked between the phone and his hyung, staring speechless. His mind reeled with various possibilities. Most of all, he wanted to know why. Why would she want to speak to him?
"This...changes things," Hoseok mused.
"I...I don't know what to do, hyung. What would I tell her? I know dad offered her money but this..."
Hoseok put a hand on his shoulder. "You have to figure this out yourself first," he said softly. "I know it's complicated, but you have to know what your stand is in this entire situation before you speak to her."
Jungkook only frowned. What could she possibly say to him? He knew she didn't want the inheritance. If that was the case, then he will become the sole owner of the Jeon Corporation. Was that what he wanted?
He avoided this issue like a plague for a reason. His father was already on the edge since his authority was now in question. He will have to step down from his position and if Jungkook didn't know his father better he'd have believed that he was happy for him. However, he knew his father wouldn't give up the mantle so easily. He liked to control and it was not easy feet.
"I need a drink," Jungkook groaned, eying the mini fridge in his office. It was only two-thirty pm and he had an important call in an hour.
"I know what you're thinking," Hoseok said, his expression grew serious. "Like I said, you have to decide what you want. Jungwoo-ssi hid the will all these years. He will not give up, but the business and everything is now rightfully yours. Your grandfather built this company and worked hard to bring it to where it is today."
"It belongs to her too," Jungkook stated softly.
Hoseok gave him a soft smile. "You wanted to be independent and out of your home. Even though he was going to let you take over the business, he was never planning to make you the key shareholder."
Jungkook knew that. He never gave much thought into that before because he thought one day everything will be his given he was the sole heir. Unexpectedly, his grandfather's will changed the entire game. As complicated as the situation was, his father was the one without any legal hold on the company now. Jungkook tried to play it cool but he could tell the storm was coming.
So many things were happening at once and he didn't know what to think of any of this. He was just waiting to see how his father would handle the situation.
"I need time," he said after a while.
