Chapter 10
Jungkook flicked his wrist for the eighth time that morning, glancing at his Rolex, waiting for the minute to tick eight so he could excuse himself from the table without being berated by his father.
Born with a golden spoon, many considered Jungkook to be fortunate. Well, he himself considered himself fortunate because despite being born into wealth, he knew how hard the other part of the life could be. He never had to struggle for anything in his life, except all this luxury came with a sacrifice. Freedom.
Being the next in line to take over the company as a CEO at such a young age came with a lot of responsibilities. Often times, work was demanding. Jungkook was robbed off his freedom at sixteen and was pushed into the business world, trained and groomed by his relentless father. He never complained though. This was all he ever knew. He got used to this even as a child, knew what was expected of him and it was ingrained in his brain. Always follow the rules.
There were times he questioned the reason for his existence, the reason why he should put up with everything, the reason why he hasn't flipped yet. But he knew well, this was his life. This was his purpose or so was told by his father. Jungkook didn't know what his purpose was or what he wanted to do with life.
At twenty-five, he felt older than their aged butler, wanting nothing more than to retire to the comfort of his room at nights. But the peace lasted only for eight hours because in the morning, he was once again up on his feet running like a clock work, performing the duties that was expected of him.
As he stared at his plate, willing himself to take a bite and avoid the unwanted questions, he couldn't help but overhear the conversation that unsettled his nerves.
"What do you mean you don't know where she is? Do something. I've been funding her all these years. See where the money has been used." His father's voice boomed across the dining room, startling everyone.
Jungkook felt like a fly on the wall as his father and his assistant conversed as if he wasn't there. Hoseok reached under the table, gently squeezing his knee. The youngest in the room released a shaky breath as he pushed the food around the plate, trying hard to concentrate.
"I'm sorry, Jungwoo-ssi. We contacted the school, but she had transferred."
"Transferred?" Jungwoo jumped to his feet. "How the hell she can be transferred without my permission? I'm her fucking guardian."
"You're not. Attorney Park Jihyun is her guardian," his assistant reminded.
Jungkook almost snorted at that. Lee Minseok was fifty and had been working with his father even before Jungkook was born. He was the only man who could reason with his father.
"As her legal guardian, Jihyun-ssi doesn't need your permission for these matters. Jeong-seon hasn't used the funds since she turned ten. And it's not like you ever cared about her whereabouts."
"Find him," his father gritted through his teeth.
"Don't worry, Jungwoo-ssi. The Park family moved to California seventeen years ago. This is the same time as she transferred. I've sent our trusted associates to track him down. We will find her."
Jungkook had always known he had a sister. Well, his father had cheated on his mother and to this day, his mother hadn't let anyone in the Jeon household to forget that little detail. They still fought over that issue and Jungkook never understood why his mother bothered to stay if she couldn't forgive his father for what he did. Not to mention, why she would have him after all that went down. But Jungkook already knew the answer.
Jungkook also knew why his father was hell bent on finding his sister after all these years. His grandfather's will clearly stated that the Jeon grandchildren would inherit the Jeon assets when they turned twenty-five. Jungkook felt sick in the stomach that his father hid this all these years. He didn't know how the information leaked, but someone discovered his father had a child out of wedlock and that too while he was still married to Jungkook's mother. And they got hold of his grandfather's will so the world will soon know that Jungkook wasn't the only heir to the Jeon empire.
When his father set up the trust fund all those years ago, he had acknowledged her as his daughter legally. There was nothing they could do about this. Jungwoo would have never thought his mistake would come back to bite in his ass. Now Jungwoo was doing his best to damage control before the shit hit the storm. Jungkook also learned from their legal team that whether they liked it or not, Jeon Jeong-seon will inherit half of everything the Jeons owned till date.
Jungkook checked his wristwatch and pushed the plate aside, having lost his appetite long ago. Hoseok stood along with him. Jung Hoseok was their business partner. They were family friends and he was more like a brother than a friend.
As they walked out of the Jeon mansion and to their car, Hoseok threw a hand over his shoulder, giving him a gentle squeeze. Hoseok along with Kim Seokjin, his cousin were the only ones who understood Jungkook. Ever since the Jeong-seon situation was brought up two weeks ago, he hadn't known peace. His mother had been throwing tantrums and he didn't want to be home at all.
"You know how your father is. Once you take over the company, you can move out and live your life the way you wanted." They got into their vehicle, Hoseok taking the wheel.
Jungkook doubted that. He didn't think he will ever be able to do that. His father still controlled every aspect of life and at twenty-five, Jungkook had never felt so lost. His father dictated every aspect of his life. Work was all he knew.
Besides, he didn't think he will be the sole CEO of the company anymore. Not with his estranged sister back in the picture. He thought he had everything figured. His plan had been simple—take over the company and then move the fuck out of his parent's home so he could finally have some peace in his life. It wasn't like he didn't try to move out before. Of course, his father hadn't agreed then.
Now with this new situation, he didn't know what to think. With a sigh, he stared outside the window, his mind was reeling.
By the end of the day, Jungkook was ready to knock a drink or two. The day had drained him considerably. He was glad it was a Friday and thankful for the silence in the car as he rode with Hoseok and Seokjin aka Jin. Friday dinner with Jin and Hoseok was something they did every week since their childhood. Meeting each other, talking about their busy week and unwinding. Well, Hoseok and Jungkook worked together since their fathers were business partners while Seokjin was a famous actor and model in South Korea.
"So, what got you sour faced today?" Jin started the conversation and Hoseok sighed, slouching in the passenger seat.
"It's the Mins," he grumbled. "We lost another tender this quarter."
"Ah right." Jin didn't have to ask further.
The Jeon Corporation and Min Group were business rivals for ages, constantly competing with each other. It was a healthy competition with each of them gaining upper hand once in a while. But these past few years had been worse. With Min Yoongi as the CEO, the Jeons never stood a chance. Min Group was well established outside Korea and rarely competed with Jeon, when they did, they always won. It hurt their pride. While the Min Group was focusing on their business outside Korea, Jeons had claimed the throne as the industry leader, only for the Mins to come back and dethrone them.
Jungkook's gaze wandered mindlessly outside the window, thoughts still stuck on the events from morning. He couldn't care less about the Min Group. He might have thought different if the situation wasn't worse than that. It was when they stopped in a red light Jungkook saw it. He sucked in a breath and his eyes widened considerably.
"Gorgeous, isn't he?" Jin asked with a teasing smile and Jungkook realized he was still staring.
He couldn't tear his gaze from the huge Billboard sign that wasn't there this morning. He was sure because it was one of the busy intersections with huge Billboard signs and he always noticed what was on display. This was new.
"That's for the upcoming Vante-Gucci show in Seoul next month. The one with blue hair is Kim Taehyung, he's the designer and the silver-haired one is Park Jimin, he's an exclusive model to Vante," Jin continued. The light turned green and Jungkook had to crane his neck as the sign passed by.
Of course, Jungkook knew who they were. He knew them ever since he received that sky blue custom-made Vante sweater for last Christmas. He knew it was custom-made because of the letters JK woven into the sweater in white. People had gone nuts when he posted that photo on social media and told him how there was only one piece in the world and it was a unique item. So Jungkook had done his research, finding everything he could about Vante.
Park Jimin was gorgeous. He was the most beautiful man he had ever set his eyes on. No offense. Kim Taehyung was equally handsome, but there was something about Jimin that attracted Jungkook every time he looked at him.
"They're really cool. I met them two months ago for a shoot in California," Jin continued. "They'll be here for Seoul fashion week. I can introduce you to him if you want, you know...Jimin."
Jungkook looked down at his lap. "Why would I want to meet him?"
"Because they're great people and they're from Korea. It's good to expand your friendship circle, Jungkookie."
Jungkook didn't need to look up to see Jin rolling his eyes. He could sense it all the way from the back seat. "I have enough friends?"
"Really? And how many friends do you have?"
Jungkook stayed silent, staring out of the window again.
"You're so young, Jungkookie. This is the age where you should enjoy your life, meet people, go out and have fun with friends."
"I'm having fun," he countered. "I'm going out with you." Jungkook sighed, too tired of having the same conversation for the hundredth time or even more. "I have you both and that's enough. I don't need anyone else."
"Jungkookie..." Jin called gently. "I'm your hyung. Your mother is my aunt and Hobi here is your father's best friend's son. We both know you since the day of your birth. You should have friends of your age. You have no idea what you're missing out."
"I'm not missing anything," Jungkook said gingerly, hoping for the conversation to end. "Are you trying to get rid of me, hyung? Am I becoming a burden to you both?"
That did it. Jin's expression fell and Jungkook felt bad for putting it that way.
"Shut up, brat!" he hissed. "I just want you to realize life is more than four walls of your office or bedroom. At this rate, you'll end up like your father, married to your work."
Jungkook shrugged. He couldn't deny. He was already like his father. It wasn't like his father allowed him luxury for having a life outside work.
Coming from a family, where marriages were nothing more than a business alliance, Jungkook didn't think he would ever find love. Marriage was definitely not in the books for him. He didn't want to think what would happen if they were to discover his sexuality. His father would disown him in an instant. Everything he ever worked for would disappear in a blink of an eye and Jungkook wasn't prepared for that. Hoseok and Jin were the only one who knew his sexuality. This CEO position would solidify his future and now even that was doubtful.
What was the point in meeting Jimin anyway? He didn't even know if Jimin was gay or not. Even if he was a gay, Jungkook won't be able to pursue him. So what if he dreamed of the handsome model. That will be the only place he will exist.
In his dreams.
