Exams (Imaginary Friend)

This is short but I thought it was funny idk jdhsiehsyux

I'm very aware that different countries have different school exams and do them in different ways but didydyueudd this is how my country do mine so just nod and pretend you understand.

"This is your GCSE Maths examination. You will have an hour and a half to complete this test. There must be silence, no talking or conversing, if you need extra working out paper, simply indicate to an invigilator and they will swiftly make their way towards you. This exam will be worth 33% of your final grade and is calculator banned. When the clock hits 9:05 you may start."

Cross sighed lowly and glanced around, tapping his biro pen incessantly against the edge of his desk. Everyone was silent around him, sat solemnly at their desks and chairs with the closed maths exam paper before them. The atmosphere was deadly, thick with tension and anxiety as all eyes except his fixed on the large digital clock at the front of the hallway, waiting for the numbers to flicker.

It was exam month. GCSE exam month. The second most important exam month in their life as claimed by all their teachers. The only thing that could top this for academic importance was the month of A-Level exams. This was what their entire school learning had lead up to, the most stressful and anxiety ridden months of their teenage lives. People would loose sleep and their minds over these damn exams, and it was clear. They were what set you up for life after all, a permanent stain on your resume.

Backs were rigid and tense, knuckles white as they gripped their pens and eyes straining. Personally, Cross found it rather amusing. He wasn't stressed about the exams, not in the slightest. Yes maybe it was because he had a rather unfair and certainly exam-illegal advantage. But no one would have to know.

A click rang out and the digital clock blinked, the numbers flipping to 9:05. Immediately the sharp sound of papers being flipped and turned rang out across the large room, pens scraping against desks and eyes burning into the first question of the paper.

Cross carefully turned his over with a lacking urgency, his mismatched pupils flickering over question one with a slight twitching smile. It had begun.

The time - as usual in an exam - went flying by and soon there was only half an hour left and the monochrome found himself approaching the last ten questions. These were the real important ones, the questions that filtered out the Einsteins from the lucky and mediocre students. As expected Cross found himself faltering upon reaching them. His maths skills were average and a little above, speaking moderately, but he wasn't in the league of the top students. Well, by himself anyway.

"Nightmare.." The word more silent than a whisper, a careful mumble that should attract the attention of no one but the ghostly figure who now hovered by his side.

"In need of my assistance?"

Cross nodded slowly, his mouth twitching into a smirk. His hand rested flat against the desk, carefully angling one finger towards a boy sat a few rows away from him. Adam Barrow. Smartest kid in the school.

Nightmare gave a low chuckle and his hand momentarily brushed through Cross' before he stepped forwards, weaving through the desks and over to the hardworking Adam who was furiously scribbling down all his working out. Pulling the high grades was so easy.

His eyes stayed locked on his friend as he slid past other kids dismissively, occasionally walking right through a few of them. They didn't blink an eye. Soon he was a mere metre away from the boy and took another step to his side before grunting, being stopped abruptly.

Cross cursed under his breath and curled his hand into a fist, eyes narrowed as the invisible chain that attached them tugged at their souls collectively. Nightmare shot a look back at him, voice raised. "One more step."

Despite fully knowing that no one could hear him Cross cringed heavily at the sound of Nightmare's voice ringing out across the deadly silent exam hall. But no one moved. For a moment he was still in thought before he placed his pen on the desk, taking a yawn before carelessly knocking it off onto the floor. Mumbling a silent apology to anyone that looked over he leaned over in an exaggerated fashion, taking his sweet time to pick it up.

The deep lean was all the other needed and Nightmare inched a few steps further forwards to stare over Adam's shoulder, his blue eye darting over his working out marks with a sharp speed, memorising it all. After only five seconds he made his way back over to Cross who quickly sat up with his pen, a sharp grin stretching across his face as he met Nightmare's sly gaze.

Perhaps it was immoral to cheat like this? He didn't much care.

He was always taught to snatch up the best opportunities after all.
