Chapter 2: The Survivors

Wow, this story is getting some attention from this, Fanfic.net and AO3. As promised, i made the second chapter of this fanfic.

Also, i'm gonna start to add some quotes in every start of the chapter. It would be like the loading screens like in the game (Which means...it's gonna get progressively worse - not in a bad way that is)

Anyways, enjoy the chapter.

"The city of Zootopia is very well known. Mammals from all over the world came here to start a better life."

The three Delta operatives head out to the city and to find the transmission they're getting. After walking off from the storm wall, they find themselves on top of the train railroad that was supposed to bring the Mammals to this city. Thanks to the sandstorm, the railroad is destroyed and littered with various objects that possibly got blown away from the storm.

Speaking of trains, they soon come across the train itself. It really wasn't in good shape. Windows were broken, the sections were scattered, and of course it was all covered in sand. While observing this train, Wolford let out a sigh. He remembered the time when he was in this train while heading to the wonderful city, whilst seeing the amazing view of Zootopia and all of its districts. Now it's all gone.

"Jeez, this train didn't see better days." Adel commented.

"Looks like there were still people in there too." Lince added as she saw there were some skeletons inside the sections of the train. "Poor bastards."

"Remember, this place has been designated a No Mammal's land." Wolford stated. "Which means we're not supposed to be here, so let's do this by the books, okay?"

"Roger, dodger." Lince replied.

"Okay, let's continue on." The Delta operatives walked away from the train. They kept moving on to the railroad while encountering various debris that shouldn't be in this place. Wolford even come across a red octagon sign by the side of the railroad, which red out the following word:

STOP

Wolford didn't pay much attention to it as it appears to be just a regular stop sign. He ignored it and went on.

Eventually their path had come to halt where one of the train sections is blocking their way through. And it looks like they couldn't go through it given the interior is filled with sand.

"Path's blocked." Adel said.

"I can see that. We gotta find a way around, somehow." Wolford said

"Over here!" Lince called out to the two operatives as she managed to find an opening from a broken part of the railway. "Maybe we can go down here and take an alternate path." She suggested.

"Sounds like a good plan." Wolford responded, agreeing with the idea. "Everyone hook up." Adel and Lince nodded as they all took out their respective ropes. They hook up to a piece of debris before aligning themselves downwards. When that's done, they rappel down from the railway and to the ground below.

"Weeee." Lince said, nonchalantly as they rappel down.

"That's enough, Lince." Wolford said, annoyed by it.

"Just keeping it light, Captain." She replied. Then they finally hit the ground.

"Well, i don't need light. I just need you to focus on the mission." The trio unhook their ropes and walk their way around the blocked railway path from underneath.

Lince then asked. "What mission, though? We're basically here pokin' a dead fish with a stick." That meant she was asking of why are they even doing here when this place was declared a No mammal's land.

Wolford then explained. "We have our orders. Locate survivors. Leave the city immediately. Then we radio command from outside the storm wall. They send in the cavalry, and we go home." Lince acknowledge it and gave him a nod.

The team took a different path to the transmission. They're now walking through a bunch of destroyed cars, conveniently making a path for them while sticking beside the railway bridge. Wolford look around to see which district they are on now, but since everything was made of sand, it was hard to tell.

"Yo heads up, the transmission is about 500 yards this way." Lince said while pointing right.

"Good to hear. The sooner we get to it, the sooner we'll know what happened here." The Delta operatives took a right, heading towards another path filled with broken down cars and a lot of sand.

As they kept walking, Lince's ear begin to perk up. "Hey, did you guys hear that?"

"You fucking with us?" Adel said, puzzled.

"I am hurt that you'd even ask." Lince replied.

"Ain't nobody here, man." He responded.

Then Wolford's ears perked up too. But it was from a different sound. "Sounds like the transmission." Wolford said.

"Huh...could've sworn I heard somebody." She said.

Wolford and Adel raised their brows in confusion. The latter shook his head. "Come on, let's get this over with." Lince then nodded, but she still kept in mind that she had heard someone watching them.

The Delta team then vault over a fallen pole that was blocking their path to the transmission. As they did, Lince spoke up.

"Hey! Anyone out there? Stalker says 'What?'" Lince was sure that something or someone is watching them from afar in all this sand. Her hearing's pretty sharp than Wolford and Adel, means she could hear stuff from miles away.

Adel wasn't too fond of her callouts. "Leave it alone, would ya? No one's out there."

"Then what the fuck are we doing here?" The Lynx asked.

"Jane's got a point." Adel remarked, turning to Wolford.

"Oh, you're taking her side, now?" He retorted.

"When she's right, she's right." This earned a smile from the Lynx, seeing that her Jaguar partner is backing her up.

"Hey. Command wants us to look around, we look around." Wolford said. He was willing to follow Command's orders in this mission, but that wasn't the only case. He wanted to go back to the city he once called home and to find out what happened to his ZPD comrades when he used to work with them. Those include his partner Fangmeyer, then Nick Wilde, and finally Judy Hopps. He hoped they're still alive.

Lince then gave a shrug. "I dunno. Sounds like a waste of three stone cold, ruggedly sexy Delta Operators, such as ourselves."

"Think of it as a paid vacation." Adel said.

"Well for future reference, I prefer my beaches with a 3-to-1 Sexy Lady:Dead body ratio." Lince said.

"Lince...do you ever actually hear the shit coming out of your mouth?" Wolford queried.

"No i do not, sir. I find it messes with my rhythm." She replied.

Wolford sighed as they kept walking to the transmission. They then had to hop inside a bus and go through it when their path was blocked, again. After they went through the bus, Wolford hears that the transmission is getting close. He could hear the distress call coming from Judy hopps.

"Hello? If anyone can hear me, this is officer Judy Hopps of the ZPD. Chief Bogo is not here anymore, so I took over as the new Chief. An attempted evacuation out of Zootopia has ended in...complete failure. Convoy stalled. Trapped in the storm 18 clicks out of Zootopia. Death toll: too many...We are walking back."

Well that explains more of the distress call. Still, Wolford felt bad for the bunny. It is clear that she tried to help the city with the ZPD, but apparently this apocalypse was just too much for her. She even sounded hopeless, which was impossible for an optimistic bunny like her. Wolford has to find her.

The squad had to duck over a truck to get to the distress signal. It was close, but the truck was in the way. After they all got out, Adel shift his aim at the roof of a truck with a look of concern. "You know, it does feel like we're being watched." He said.

"Good." Lince said. "Someone should see of how sexy I am on the job."

Eventually they had reached their destination. The transmission of the distress call was by what looks to be a small encampment area. A transmitter was placed, that was made of spare parts. Though, no one was here.

"This is the place." Wolford said as Lince approached the radio transmitter.

"Yup. This is what we're looking for, whatever it is. Someone build this out of spare parts too."

"Any idea who?" Wolford asked.

Lince observed it for a moment before turning to Wolford, shaking her head. "Nope. Not a fucking clue." Lince continue to tinker with the transmitter as Wolford waited while looking around the place.

"God damn...Wolford, you gotta see this!" Adel exclaimed.

Wolford turned to where Adel was at. He was by the two ZPD SUVs, with one of them parked by the transmitter for balance. The strange thing about the SUVs is how they were tacked with armor of various materials. It almost looks like a military vehicle. The Timber wolf then approached to the Jaguar, wondering what is going on.

That would be answered when Adel opened one of the doors of the SUV with its windows covered in cloth, then a body came out of it and dropped to the ground, startling the Captain a bit.

"Oh fuck.." Wolford said.

"That's putting it lightly." The Jaguar responded.

Wolford and Adel then observed the corpse. The corpse was a male Oryx. Blood was coming out of his mouth and his eyes were lifeless. One of his horns was detached, leaving blood out of it too. What got the Wolf's attention that he was wearing ZPD attire, meaning that he was a ZPD officer.

"Body looks fresh..." Wolford said, judging from the smell and the amount of flies that were surrounding the dead Oryx. Lince then joined in on the commotion.

"It is." Adel replied. "Even worse, he's ZPD."

Wolford shook his head. He didn't like seeing one of his ZPD comrades dead. Even when he came back here.

"Who did this?" Lince asked.

"Probably from the same people that's been ghostin' us." Adel responded.

"Doesn't answer the question." She replied.

Wolford then sniff his nose and went in alert, but he kept a calm demeanor. "Don't worry. I think we're about to find out." Ade and Lince looked at him puzzled before they heard weapons cocking. Wolford had smell the stalkers and they were behind them.

The Delta operators quickly went to cover as Wolford observed the stalkers. There were about three of them and they are standing on top of a large ZPD armored truck. The stalkers are a Zebra, a Lamb, and a Weasel. Two preys and one pred. They all wore various outfits that made them look like scavengers.

Their weapons consists of small SMGs and pistols, all aiming at the Delta operatives. There was also another stalker by the side of the Truck. A female antelope wielding an MP5 at them.

Wolford then spoke out. "My name is Captain Martin Wolford, of Delta force from the Ragunan Military. We're looking for survivors."

"Why? So you can kill us, too?" The Lamb shout out.

"No, we ain't gonna kill anyone." Lince responded. "Maybe if we can understand each other better if we all put our weapons down." Though it appears that the scavengers are not gonna do that order.

"Good call, Lince." Wolford said.

"How should we know you're not reinforcements sent by the ZPD!?" The Weasel asked.

"Uh, that's because we ain't wearing there uniforms?" Lince said, showing them her attire. "Listen, just tell me who you guys are and we can handle this peacefully." Lince is not only a good marksman, but she can also be a good negotiator too.

While Lince communicates to the scavengers, Wolford and Adel were discussing the outcome of this scenario. "This may go south real fast, Wolford." Adel whispered.

"No shit." He quietly exclaimed. "Any ideas?"

Adel gestured his gun to a bus that was below the Scavengers and the truck. "See that bus over there? It's filled with sand. Push comes to shove, shoot out the windows. Might give us an advantage."

Wolford gave him a nod, but he won't do it unless the situation goes haywire and that the scavengers won't cooperate and shoot them. Though it appears that whatever Lince was saying to them, the Scavengers are slowly coming in to good terms with the Delta operatives as they lower down their weapons.

Lince had clarified that they are not enemy reinforcements to them and they are just trying search for any survivors from the storm. The scavengers ease down a bit, though the Weasel then turned to the other two operatives.

"You two! Are you sure what the Lynx is saying is true?"

Wolford and Adel gave him nods. The former then said. "We are. We're only here to help."

"What was your name again?" The Weasel asked the wolf.

"Captain Martin Wolford."

"Martin...Wolford..." The Weasel interpreted the name before his eyes went wide. "I know you. You're Officer Wolford, of the ZPD!" He exclaimed.

The other Scavengers let out gasps as the Lamb then gritted his teeth. "That means they ARE with the ZPD. You lying bastards! Kill them!" They raised their weapons again, aiming to shoot them now.

Wolford act fast and did what Adel said. He used his M4A1 and fire a burst of rounds at the windows of the bus below them. The windows shattered as the sand flooded below to the three scavengers, burying them alive.

"Everyone move!" Wolford shouted, hopping over his cover and took out the female antelope when she was stunned by the sand. Adel and Lince obliged as they catch up with Wolford and move forward. They encountered more Mammals that bear the same attires as the others back there, and they are shooting their guns at the operatives.

The team had to shoot back at them in self-defense.

"Who the hell are these guys?" Adel asked while shooting his M249 SAW at a pig by the roof of a bus.

"They're refugees. Survivors of the storm." Lince answered, whilst killing another one of them with her TAR-21.

"That's good, right? We should radio Command. Give 'em the news." Adel suggested.

"Be my guest. I'm sure they'll stop shooting so you can make a phone call." Lince sarcastically said.

"Less talking, more shooting!" Wolford ordered.

He then aimed his rifle at a lone antelope refugee. He shot them straight to the head before turning to the others. Two more were coming out inside of the truck with another refugee running towards them. The Delta operatives swiftly took them out.

"On your left, more coming out of the dune!" Lince said.

Wolford saw two more refugees firing at him. He shot the first one by the chest. "Target down!" He exclaimed before turning to the second refugee, a female otter. Wolford shoot her to the head as the otter dropped down dead.

Wolford, Adel, and Lince continue to move forward. They encounter more of the Refugees gathered by a bus. There was a Hippo wielding a machine gun as he placed the bipod at the windows and fire at them.

"MG on the bus!" Adel exclaimed as they quickly took cover by the cars or the barriers. Wolford tried to shoot them, but the hippo got him pinned down.

"Adel, empty that bus!" Wolford ordered.

"Roger that!" He said before taking out a flashbang. He threw it to the bus as it then stuns the machine gunner and the rest of the refugees. Adel and Lince got out of their cover and took them out quickly.

"It's clear! C'mon!" Wolford nodded as he and the others went over to the bus.

"Through here, by the back!" Wolford said. They all vault over the back of the bus. Suddenly they were met with a grenade.

"Grenade!" Lince called out.

"Get to cover!" Wolford said as he took cover by a barrier. Adel and Lince did the same too. They waited a moment before the grenade exploded. "Okay, where are they hiding?" He asked of the enemy's whereabouts.

"Billboard, across the way." Adel said.

Wolford nodded, turning to the Lynx. "Lince, take them out."

"Yes, sir." Lince pulled out her sniper rifle and set it up by the car. She took aim at the billboard, seeing a wolf refugee about to throw another grenade at them. Lince took the time and shot the wolf as they were trying to throw the grenade. It then exploded, taking the billboard with them.

"Target neutralized." She said.

The team move out to more ground. Then more of the Refugees showed up in the area.

"There they are, shoot them!" One of them said as they all start to fire at the Delta operatives.

Adel fired his machine gun at two of the refugees by the cargo container. One of them turned to the Jaguar and was about to shoot him with his AK-47, but Lince dealt with 'em with a shot from her sniper.

"On top of the bus. Take her out!" Wolford saw a lioness refugee by the bus. She took fire at the operatives with her Micro 9mm. Though because she was exposed, the team took her out with ease.

"There's more coming out of the cargo container!" Wolford shift his aim at the container as three more Refugees rushed out of it. He took out two of them before they got the chance to fire back. The last one took cover by a car.

Adel got him pinned down with his MG while Lince and Wolford move closer to take him out. The refugee stood up and was going to fire his pistol, but Wolford quickly put three bullets to his chest and two more to the head.

"Alright, let's go." Wolford went inside the cargo container. He approached the end of the container and give the door a kick as it flew open. As he was about to walk out, a cheetah ambushed him. He grabbed a hold of Wolford's rifle as the latter tried to free it. Wolford then use his free hand to pull out his sidearm and shot the cheetah to the chest, then kicking him to the ground.

Seeing that he was still alive, Wolford ran to him and execute him by stomping his feet on his neck, breaking it.

After that, Wolford panted and interpreted of what just happened. This was supposed to be a simple reconnaissance mission, but now he is finding himself killing armed refugees, said refugees being fellow Zootopians like him.

"Thought we were rescuing people..."

Adel and Lince catch up to him. "You okay, Wolford?" Adel asked.

"Yeah, just got ambushed by that guy." Wolford replied, pointing to the dead cheetah. Suddenly, the team heard a big explosion, which startled them. "The hell was that?" Wolford asked as another explosion erupted in the distance.

"I'm picking up a distress call." Lince said.

"Patch it through." Wolford ordered. She nodded and patch her radio to the signal.

"Dispatch, this is Alpha patrol. We're under attack. Repeat, we are under attack! The Insurgents have us surrounded. Request immediate assistance!"

The team interpreted what was said by the radio. Wolford thinks the person is must be a ZPD officer calling for help, given that there was a dead officer back by the transmitter presumably killed by the refugees, or Insurgents as the Alpha patrol calls it. Moments later, they heard a shriek coming out.

"Shit! Martzen is down! We need backup!"

Wolford begin to grew worry of the lives of these ZPD officers trapped by the Insurgents. "Lince - distance." He asked to the Lynx.

"Bout' 100 yards away." She said.

"Let's move!" Wolford ran to a sprint. He was willing to save these Officers, not just so he could get information of what has happened to the city, but also to save his old comrades. He abruptly stopped when there were four more Insurgents blocking his path.

"More hostiles incoming!"

The team took cover as the Insurgents unleash a barrage of bullets from their machine guns and SMGs. Wolford tried to fire back, but his bullets missed them. He duck back into cover where the Insurgents continue to fire at them.

"Frag those hostiles!" Wolford ordered to his teammates. Lince obliged it.

"Yes, sir!" Lince took a quick peek before taking out one of her frag grenades. She unpinned it and then threw the grenade to their position.

"Grenade! Get outta there!" One of the insurgents shouted. The grenade then exploded, killing three of the four Insurgents. The sole survivor got back up to fight, but he was quickly put down by Lince with her sniper.

"Target down." She said.

After the coast is clear, the team break to a sprint, heading towards to the location of the  distress call from Alpha patrol. Hopefully they won't be too late to save them all.
