Prologue

"Duuude!" Maya exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air and waving them around. "Exams are done."

Lyra copied the hand thing. "No more studying for stuff I don't care about. Goodbye school and hello freedom!!!"

"Exactly. So, where do you want to head first?" Maya asked, changing the subject in a split second.

With both having finished their exams-math for Lyra and science for Maya-the two best friends were ready to walk through Kitchener. It was a beautiful sunny day, only a couple of clouds in the sky. The sun was beating against the two girls' backs, but they didn't care. They were unable to see anything go wrong, now that summer was here and no more exams.

"I don't know," Lyra furrowed her eyebrows as she thought. "Library? Or Hot Topic? I need more band merch..."

"And more anime stuff," Maya murmured.

"Shut up," Lyra lightly punched her on the shoulder. "You want anime stuff as much as I do."

Maya laughed. "I know. And I can't wait to get you to watch Bleach!"

"But that'll only happen if you watch Fairy Tail."

"By the excitement you get when it's mentioned, I was bound to watch it eventually."

Lyra laughed. "Good. Anyways, now that we're outside, shouldn't you take off your sweater?"

"Never," Maya hissed. She was wearing a light grey zip up sweater, along with dark blue jeans and purple sandals. Her light brown hair was tied back in a bun, with two thin strands of hair framing the side of her face. "The day I take off my sweater will be the day you take off your chocker."

Lyra gasped dramatically, her hand flying to her neck where her chocker was. She was wearing an All Time Low band shirt with a warped tour sweater tied around her waist because, although it was cold that morning, it had gotten much hotter out. Her skinny jeans were black and her black socks were covered by a black pair of VANS. The chocker she was wearing said music for life on it, which was black and silver. She usually wore her usual band merch bracelets, Forever the Sickest Kids, a Day to Remember, Issues, Crown the Empire, Set it Off, Four Year Strong, We Came as Romans, Sleeping with Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Bring Me the Horizon, and Asking Alexandria. Those weren't all her bands but any more and it would be too many bracelets. Her wavy red hair rested on her shoulders. "How dare you suggest such a thing."

As they continued walking, Maya started feeling sweat on her brow, the back of her neck, her back and her pits. Damn, she thought. It is too hot to wear a sweater. Maya unzipped her sweater and tied it around her waist, revealing a light green tank top.

"Dost my eyes decieveth me?" Lyra asked, feigning shock as she spoke in the times of Shakespeare. "Hast thou taken off thy sweater?"

"Shut up," Maya grumbled crossing her arms. She never understood why, but she preferred to keep at least her shoulders covered. Unfortunately, her mom needed to do the laundry because all Maya found in her shirt drawer that morning were tank tops. "Have you decided where we're going?"

"Why do I have to choose?" Lyra whined. "You know I'm not that good at making decisions."

"Me neither. That's why we're taking turns. And this time, it's your turn."

Lyra sighed, pouting. "I know."

"Allow me to make the decision for you," a male voice said.

Maya and Lyra turned around, curious who had spoken. The only person that was around was a tall male. He looked to be about 27, with short, dark brown hair that tickled his ears. He wore a white button down shirt, black sweatpants and brown shoes. Neither of the girls recognized the brand. Right in front of his throat, a black tattoo shaped like a vertical blade, the handle downwards. Around it was a single black circle.

"Who are you?" Maya asked, narrowing her eyes at the strange man.

He swept his arms to the side in a grand gesture. "That does not matter, considering you might not survive the next few minutes."

"What are you talking about?" Lyra stepped in front of Maya in a protective gesture. The two girls were both 15, yet they were willing to take a take a bullet for each other.

Maya slapped Lyra's arm and stepped in front of her friend, her arm outstretched to avoid Lyra from stepping forward again.

This pissed of Lyra, and she slapped her arm away. This caused the two girls to start slapping away each other's hands, trying to protect the other.

The man watched the two with a confused expression, trying to process what the two were doing.

"Let me protect you!" Lyra hissed.

"No way," Maya retorted. "I can't let you get hurt at my expense!"

"Well, I have the same problem!"

"I don't care! I'm going to protect you!"

"Enough!" The man shouted angrily.

The girls froze mid-slap and looked back at the man, eyes twitching. "Butt out!" They shouted before bickering with each other again.

"Wha...?" He looked between the two girls, confusion making his face go slack. Didn't they realize that he was the reason the two started bickering in the first place?! "Fine," he growled. He stretched out his hand, and a small white circle erupted from it.

Maya and Lyra froze when they saw this, Maya confused and Lyra shocked, recognizing what it was.

The same circle appeared beneath the two girls.

"What the...? What are you?" Maya asked, looking at the man, fear trapped in her eyes. It was this fear that prevented her from leaving this circle.

"B-but how?" Lyra stuttered. "H-how is this p-possible? Y-you're
a—?"

Unfortunately, Lyra didn't have the chance to finish her sentence, as the two girls were pulled into the ground, fear the last expression on their faces that were seen.
