CROSSED - Chapter 16
"So you are here," Maxwell spoke harshly and in a deep mellow voice.
He slowly turned his long body until he faced her. As he came closer, Bette could smell the whiskey, hot on his breath. The icy gaze of his eyes seemed to reflect back her fear. They were in a dead lock with hers.
"Yes. I'm here. But I'm not who you think I am," Bette said not moving her eyes but unable to hide the quiver in her voice.
"You are exactly who I think you are." He said sounding as if he were trying to convince himself as much as he was her.
"No. I'm not. I just have to tell you one thing Mr. Maxwell. You messed up. I am not Lana Fier. My name is Bette Locke and I want my body back." Bette's voice and body trembled as she sat in the white molded plastic chair searching for strength she had to convince herself existed. "I want my body back right now because I don't want Lana's life and it's not fair that you did this to me and want me to pay for her mistakes and your mistakes!" Bette was now almost yelling.
Her voice was shaking less and her body had stopped trembling. Bette was getting her courage back. And as she felt herself growing stronger, that courage was accompanied by a healthy dose of rage that put fire in her eyes.
He was going to change her back and after that Lana could deal with her own life and her own problems. Hopefully not by being killed by this psycho but if she were guilty, then justice should be served.
Bette wanted to think the best and hope the best but the possible murderer had more than willingly thrown her under the bus being driven by Maxwell the maniac.
Maxwell paused and his expression changed. He was angry but it was different. Bette watched wondering what he was going to do.
"I WANT LANA FIER!!!" he roared causing Bette to sit back, her head now against the royal blue wall.
The veins in his neck bulged with blood as he said each word and his face turned the shade of crimson red. He didn't want some other girl in Lana's body. He wanted Lana, the girl who had killed Mickal five years ago. He needed to get Lana Fier. "If this really wasn't Lana, where was she hiding?" Maxwell asked himself.
Bette sat with her eyes closed saying another little prayer. She could feel his steely eyes boring into her own, wondering if she was telling the truth. Her eyes were sealed as she waited for the prayer to reach heaven or whoever would hear it.
For moments that seemed to stretch on infinitely Bette heard nothing in the room besides her own thoughts. He was speaking but it became background noise just like the banging and yells coming from the closet.
Bette's eyelids clouded over as the light in the room no longer reflected on the inside of her lids. The sound of powerful thunder shook her seat. She jumped, startled by the sound.
