CROSSED - Chapter 11

Bette stood up slowly from her spot on the floor while staring at her now pale reflection in the dark screen of the phone. The phone dropped from her hand to the bed. She sluggishly sat down next to it on the bed and continued to stare at Lana Fier's face in the oval dresser mirror.

"Susan?"

"Yes?" She said with a tone telling Bette she already knew.

"I don't believe this." Bette's garbled words were barely audible.

"Neither do I." Susan shook her head in disbelief.

"She doesn't want to switch back. She likes my life and says she's keeping it. She wants to be me. What am I supposed to do? I don't want her life. Especially now. She doesn't even want her life." Bette's body crumpled onto the pillow as she stared at the white speckled ceiling.

'Maybe your best bet is to just go along with this. You know what else? If you find the tall man, chances are he'll think you're Lana and go after you. He'll probably do something to your body though. I can't believe Lana could do something like this. I'm shocked."

"What if he kills me?"

"Then you're brains will probably switch back or something like that. Your mind would be back in your body and her mind would be snatched out of your body. You know what I mean? Your body would be yours again and her body would be hers again. I mean I don't know for sure, but you gotta find the man." Susan said sounding excited about the possibility.

"The key word there is probably. He could kill this body and me right along with it." Bette felt sadness dripping over her like the rain from her nightmares.

"But if you are right then Lana would be dead. Obviously she would have rather let me die. Why should I care about her anyway? I didn't ask to be in this, did I? I didn't kill anyone. I should just turn her in to him and make him switch us back and then she's all his."

"That's right girl. You got your own life to live. You can't worry about her cuz she sure ain't worried about you!" Susan got up and went to the notebook on her bed.

"It's not right. Either way, it's not right. I shouldn't be here and she shouldn't be there and no one else needs to die." Bette sighed trying to find some place of reason in all this mess. "Did you get started on the sketch?"

"Yeah, it still pretty rough though." Susan said shrugging her shoulders as if it were nothing. Bette looked at the amazing picture she'd put together. It was impressive. Bette hesitated to ask what Susan's major was but she could've been a professional artist.

Bette looked at the drawing in front of Susan. "This is great. And you are really close. It's actually really good. He looks a little too friendly though but it's him. I know! Let's go to the office in this building and ask if this man was here. We can ask why he was here and maybe get some more information, perhaps like a name."

Bette was excited now to have something to go on. There was a picture she could show. She smiled a real smile for the first time in this new life.

"I think that's a good idea. Mr. Jenkins hopefully asked some questions if this man came in. He'd be hard to forget." Susan said smiling some and joining Bette in a momentary celebration.

The reflection looking back at Bette in the mirror had puffy eyes and a splotchy face. Her brown hair was a mess from being washed and nothing else and then lying on it. Bette pulled it back into a mess of a bun and was ready to go. What she looked like didn't really matter much.

"Okay. I'm ready. Let's go." Bette was halfway out of the door before realizing Susan needed to lead the way.
