Chapter 8- Growing Realization
To say you were nervous as you followed Patches outside was an understatement. You had known him all of a few hours and even you knew that this wasn't going to be some friendly chat.
The moment you were far enough in the forest to be out of earshot, a growl escaped Patches as he swung around to face you, his blue eyes blazing as bright as his fire, "I think it's time you start talking." His voice was deathly serious as you stared at each other. He obviously wasn't in the mood to humor you, but the hard thing was that you didn't know what he was asking for.
So much had happened, he could be asking about why you froze at the sight of Giri back at the USJ, where you were, if this had happened before, etc.
Really, you were more than a little lost at the moment, so as your face twisted to match the confusion, you couldn't stop the stupid, "Hah?" From escaping you. Tenya would be so disappointed in you right now.
Patches- Well, perhaps after everything it would be more polite to call him by the name he gave you- was tense, his whole body seeming to be carved out of stone as he glared, "You heard me. Because of you, I was dragged to a completely different land along with some random girl. Did you bring us here on purpose?"
"What? No!" Your hands raised defensively as your eyes widened, "I swear that's never happened to me before!" He continued to stare at you, obviously expecting more of an answer than you gave, so, of course, you started to panic ramble.
"Listen, before now, I wasn't able to teleport more than a few kilometers, if I had to guess, I'd say the stress of using my quirk so much in one day, combined with the fact that I saw Giri- who I thought was a figment of my imagination until that moment, might I add- and the stress of everything warped my quirk."
Your arm began to bob gently as you talked, a clear sign of just how agitated you were.
"I'm sorry that I dragged you into this, I really am, but I don't think I can get us back."
His eyes widened and he took a threatening step towards you, which made you step away. It's not like you thought he'd be malicious about hurting you... But your leg was still aching from the last time you'd upset him, and honestly, you didn't know him well enough to believe that he wouldn't hurt you.
Unfortunately for you, the forest was rather dense, so you ended up tripping over a bush before you could go any further.
"You want to run that by me again?" Okay, so he was mad. Roger that. Thank the lord that there were exits all around you if you could get through it without tripping again, but now came the fun part.
He was obviously giving you a chance to rephrase what you said, but there would be no rephrasing anything, especially not this, "I don't think I can get us home." You repeated solemnly, "I don't even know how I did that, to begin with, and even if I did, well... What if there's more than just two worlds out there? We could be going between them for the rest of our lives and never get back home?"
"And what if I jumped us through time, not to a different world or whatever this is?" You had been letting this topic stew of the backburner all day, there were too many possibilities, "It could be impossible for me to get us back... I mean, I hate to say that it would be like a needle in a haystack, but that seems most accurate right now."
Sparks of blue flames began to curl around his hands and you flinched. He had been mad at you when you met, but that felt like nothing when compared to the ice-cold rage you could feel radiating off him at the moment.
In a heartbeat, you realized that unlike so many people you had met over the years, Dabi's anger wasn't hot. He didn't blow up at the slightest provocation.
No, he took his vengeance in a swift, calculated manner, making sure to deal the maximum possible damage. Which, to you, was so, so much worse.
How did you find that out?
Simple really. After a moment of restraining himself, Dabi leaned over you with his ridiculously hot flames still flickering around him, and breathed out a threat that you were sure would appear in your nightmares.
"You'll find a way, hero, I'll make sure of it."
Now you were well aware that the words themselves didn't sound like a threat, but the look in his eyes sealed the deal. Those eyes were merciless... They were the eyes of a killer.
Well, it seemed that his moment of kindness that he had when he brought you to the hospital was long since gone. He no longer felt like he owed you, and to be perfectly honest, you agreed with that. You were far more in debt to both him and Hagakure than they could ever be to you.
Not that you had a chance to express that. The moment he had made his point, Dabi straightened up and walked back towards the group as though nothing had happened.
Your heart felt like it was performing a polka in your chest, but he was calm and collected. Crap, he was scary. With trembling legs, you scrambled to your feet and followed after him, taking deep breaths.
Okay, he wanted to get home, did he? That meant practicing with your quirk, which meant sneezing and getting into unpredictable situations...
Going off what Meliodas had said earlier, magic wasn't as well received by most of the people here, so you appearing in front of people randomly wouldn't probably be as well received.
Was being burned as a witch a possibility in this world? That would make sense, though it wasn't really something you wanted to find out for yourself. Swords were more of a thing in this place as well, weren't they?
Hmm... The more you thought about it, the more you figured you were probably going to die before figuring out how to control your quirk.
***
You really did try to school the fear thrumming through your veins as the two of you rejoined the group. This wasn't a situation that the others needed to be burdened with, especially since they might start to blame Dabi for his actions, which was the last thing you wanted.
I mean, if he actually killed you (which he wasn't going to since you were his only ride home), that would be a different story. Their group would have a legitimate reason to dislike him then, but other than that? Nope. Call you crazy, but the idea of them hating him because he threatened you seemed completely unreasonable.
Maybe you were damaged.
After all, Tenya had tried to figure out more than once if your quirk was one of those rare ones that affected your health when you used it, it would've made sense and been a good card to throw at your parents every now and then, but that didn't seem to be the case.
No, from everything Tenya found, as well as the doctors- between the two of them, you definitely trusted Tenya's results more- your quirk never harmed you outright...
It just threw you into situations where you could be harmed.
What was that phrase Tensei had used once in front of your parents that fit this? Oh right, 'Like a Little Bitch.'
Your heart calmed the more you thought about your family, but even still, you were likely far too pale by the time you got back, as both Meliodas and Diane threw concerned looks at you.
"(Y/N)?" Hawk padded over to you and you knelt in front of him, still fighting to keep your emotions in check. Your hand gently petted over his bristly hide and you smiled, "Why are you crying?"
Your eyes widened marginally as you touched your face. Sure enough, your skin was wet, and even as you sat there, more tears rolled over your fingers."I..."
Slowly you faded out, being completely unsure of what to say. It felt like words were utterly useless right now, so instead, you wiped your face with your hand and returned the gentle hand to Hawk's head and smiled as wide as you could with how bad you were trembling.
You didn't even know you were trembling until you tried to smile...
This sure was one heck of a day, wasn't it?
The large pig took one look at you and turned to Dabi, "What did you do, fire boy?" He was attempting to sound threatening, which was, unfortunately, more amusing than anything else, "You made her cry! Why would you make (Y/N) cry?!"
Dabi snarled at the pig, "And why do you think it's any of your business? Eh, pork chop?" Blue flames began to flicker once more at Dabi's fingertips.
Hawk obviously didn't care about Dabi's words, because he huffed right back, and your eyes widened, "No!" You gasped out, tugging as carefully as you could on the pig's ear, "It wasn't him, it's okay!" Whether you were saying this to stop Hawk from becoming barbequed pork, or because you actually believed it, even you weren't sure, "I... I just miss my family, that's all."
Another wave of sadness rolled through your body, but you met Hawks curious, demanding stare with a kind smile.
A hand appeared in your vision and you looked up to see Meliodas standing over you, sympathy radiating from him, "You're in good company, (Y/N)," he said, his voice the softest you had ever heard it, "No one here has avoided loss."
He was so hopeful... If you weren't an optimistic person like you tried to be, you'd probably get really irritated with him, but at it was, his attitude was what you needed to help avoid breaking down and becoming an inconsolable mess on the forest floor. His words reminded you that you weren't the only one there, which would have been incredibly easy to do in any other situation.
You shot a quick sideglance at Dabi, who seemed to be looking at you in shock before you took Meliodas' hand.
"Thanks," Your smile said everything you couldn't as you turned to look at the invisible girl sitting next to Elizabeth, "And I really am sorry about all this Hagakure."
With a bounce to her step, she stood and made her way to you, her UA uniform causing the slightest of grimaces to cross your face, "And why are you apologizing?" She asked once she was firmly in front of you, "Did you bring me here on purpose?" You shook your head, "Then don't be sorry. We'll get through this, especially since we have some of the most powerful people in this land on our side!"
What?
You looked curiously at Meliodas, who simply linked his hands behind his head before laughing heartily, "Sorry (Y/N)," He grinned, "Hagakure here started asking some pretty deep questions when you left."
Well, that answered nothing. I tilted my head and allowed myself to be dragged back to the blazing fire by Hagakure as Meliodas gave Dabi a firm shove in that direction. Patches stumbled ever so slightly and you had to stifle a chuckle at the overly innocent look that Meliodas was practically drowning Patches in.
It was a bizarre day, to be sure. As you sat down in between Hagakure and Diane, your brain spun trying to keep up with it all. A new world, a new government, no internet, and certainly no GPS signal.
But at least there was some form of indoor plumbing if there hadn't been that, you probably would have launched yourself off the roof of the tavern in retaliation.
Cups of alcohol were passed around as your group settled in, though you passed, your face twisting unpleasantly as you smelled the potent liquid. You had gone your whole life without drinking, and though Tensei offered to take you out to give it a try, you never really wanted to.
But that was beside the point.
Apparently Meliodas had given Hagakure something, which didn't at all irritate you at all. You knew he had been holding back earlier... the mystery this group presented was driving you crazy.
The moment everyone was back, you jumped into interrogation mode, "So," You said cheerfully. If you had this right, there really only two likely possibilities, "Do you work with your government, or are you criminals?"
It seemed fairly obvious to you that these were the options. The uncomfortable looks that were shot between each other whenever someone asked anything slightly personal, the Diane looked sad whenever other members of their group were brought up... It just stunk of something either top secret or illegal.
Just as you thought, both Diane and Elizabeth froze, looking at each other with clear panic as their eyes shifted to Meliodas. Hawk sat there staring at you with his mouth hanging open, and Meliodas laughed.
His blond hair bobbed cheerfully as he took a deep gulp of his ale, "You always been this perceptive?"
You smiled wryly, "Eh, it comes with the territory," You shrugged, "My family works with the government a lot, and I've seen the inside of enough jails because of my quirk. It seemed like a natural guess to me."
Even Dabi perked up as Meliodas sighed, "Well, you aren't wrong," His ever-present smile turned wistful for a moment, "We're actually both."
What? I mean... Okay, you weren't going to judge, but what?
Diane shifted uncomfortably and you looked back up at her only to see a frown, "Yeah. We used to be the kingdom's best team of knights, The Seven Deadly Sins, completely badass and able to beat anyone, but we were framed and now everyone hates us."Sorry, no Janis here.
Dabi leaned forward, his eyes shining brightly at that, "Wait... Seven Deadly Sins? I heard that name while I was in a nearby town. Everyone is fucking terrified of you guys, and rumors were going around that they were gathering again after ten years."
Interesting.
"So where's the rest of you?" Your yellow eyes gleamed in the dark, and while you wouldn't know it, the entire group was caught off guard by the way they almost glowed with an ethereal mist, "It would make sense for you to separate if you were wanted criminals, but you have three here."
Elizabeth blushed and cleared her throat, "Um, well, there's actually only two of the Sins here," She said, waving off Meliodas who placed a hand on her knee, "No, it's okay. I feel like we can trust them."
Oo, more secrets? Her turquoise eye shone with sadness as she looked at you, "I actually just joined with Sir Meliodas and Lady Diane because I needed their help saving my father... and my kingdom."
Excuse you?
An audible gasp came from Hagakure, but you just cocked an eyebrow, desperately wishing there were some glasses you could push up dramatically, "A princess?" You mused and she nodded, "And who has your father?"
"The Holy Knights took him into custody."
You had no idea what importance that name had, but a quick glance at Dabi revealed his eyes widening, "Wait, those bastards who patrol the streets and act like they are a gift from God?" He burst out, a small blade of flame springing from his hands.
Meliodas took one look at him and his face tightened, "I take it you got to meet some of them?" He asked stiffly, showing the first sign of anger you had seen.
Dabi nodded his eyes blazing now, "Yeah, those bastards kicked me out of town when they saw my face. Apparently scarred mutants aren't needed in this kingdom of yours."
Ouch... That explained why he was in such a foul mood when he came back to talk to you. You would probably be pissed if that happened to you, so you definitely couldn't blame him for getting angry.
"Yeah, that sounds about right." Meliodas took a long drink before looking up at Diane, who definitely had a pissed off look on her face, "They don't really like people who are... Different. In any way, so you aren't alone."
"Right now we're traveling to get our group back together so we can deal with the issue. And bonus? We might actually get to prove that we didn't kill Zaratras while we're at it."
Hm. Their quest seemed so noble. They were fighting in whatever way they could and Elizabeth was trying her darndest to save her family. You felt kind of bad for comparing that to your petty problems, but this was a different world and a completely different set of issues.
If you were being honest, you probably wouldn't last a day in this new land without some help, and while Patches seemed like he could protect himself if things got out of hand, Hagakure probably wouldn't be received well by these people.
You needed all the help you could get.
It felt like you were moving bricks as you stood and walked to stand in front of Meliodas, "I'm not very good at this," Your voice was weak, but your determination was iron-clad, "But would you let us come with you? I can't promise we'll be able to help a whole ton... But we'll do what we can."
You held out a hand to shake with so much confidence that you didn't possess, but Meliodas surprised you by standing as well and taking your hand in his, "(Y/N), I wouldn't have had it any other way."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Okay everyone, let's do a fun little exercise really quick. I want you to think about your day, how many times do you sneeze usually in one day?
I sneeze a lot... A quick estimate would be at least six times per day, and more if I'm going in and out of the sun. Can you imaging teleporting somewhere every time you sneezed?
It was totally unintentional, but I think I've created the worst quirk in BNHA. At the very least, the most inconvenient one...
What is your least favorite quirk in the series?
