Chapter 3- Shock Is One Heck Of A Drug
As soon as the voice was heard, a blue flame appeared in Dabi's hand, which radiated an intense amount of heat that you could feel from several feet away. As the heat hit you, the pain in your leg flared back up... Not to say that it hadn't been hurting the whole time, but well... I mean, at least you could still feel pain...
Right?
You immediately recognized that Dabi was about to go on the offensive, and while yeah, you hurt, it didn't mean that you were going to let the idiot attack your brother.
Immediately, you lunged forward, gritting your teeth together and hissing as you landed on top of Dabi, singeing your arm ever so slightly on the blue flame before Dabi the flame out.
"Calm down," You hissed, "He's good... Well, at least... He won't hurt you unless you hurt me." The contempt in Dabi's eyes probably would have hurt if you had given a single solitary crap about his opinion. Sure, you didn't exactly know how to approach this situation, your brother was a hero, in every way shape and form, but he was also your big brother.
Dabi probably saw both those things as being bad for him, which to be fair, was probably true. He was a shady guy hanging out in an alley and he just attacked you, neither of which would really endear him to someone like Ingenium.
From your position draped across Dabi's lap, you looked up at your brother, "Hey," You said nonchalantly, practically forcing a derisive scoff from Patches (You were heavily considering calling him that just to irritate him). It may not have been the smoothest move you could have made, but it did the job.
For the most part...
Tensei stood frozen for a few moments, trying to understand what he had come upon, but that changed the moment he saw your leg.
It was something that you were still trying to avoid thinking about, and he got the whole view, blackened, and really just not pretty, with only one guess of who could have done this.
Ingenium's hero suit was an inconvenience at times, the headpiece stopped people from being able to see his actual emotions, and when people didn't know him, he looked awfully intimidating. But you were his sister. You weren't some random fan in the street, you knew your brother, and when you heard the engines in his arms revving, you knew what was about to happen.
At first, you may have been protecting your brother from the loose cannon known as Dabi, but you were pretty sure you were now going to have to protect Dabi from your brother. It was a bit of a role reversal that you weren't sure you appreciated.
"Woah," You said frantically, your voice rising a good octave as the body underneath you began to heat up to a painful point, "How about let's all stop going on emotion right now! Wouldn't that be cool? Aren't we all fans of diplomacy?!"
Nope, that wasn't working. Tensei spoke as soon as you stopped, his words cold and fully in big brother mode, "Did you hurt her?" He asked, the words sending shivers down both yours and Dabi's spine.
--"You know? The funny thing about all this is that I teleported right on top of this lug, isn't that funny Tensei? We should all calm down and talk about it!"--
Unfortunately, Dabi didn't seem to be one to back down from a challenge, "Yeah, the bitch popped out of nowhere. I was well within my rights to attack, Mister Hero." His tone had achieved max mocking as he glared down your brother, which sucked because he was pressing all the buttons that would get Tensei riled up.
--"Have you gotten any news about a flooded aquarium, brother dear? I think there's probably police on the scene, you need to go let them know what happened! And make sure the pufferfish is okay!"--
As soon as the word bitch popped out of Dabi's mouth, especially in conjunction with you, you knew that everyone was screwed. Tensei did not take well to people insulting his siblings, or even just women in general. "So you thought it was okay to brutally mutilate her? You are a villain of the worst kind."
--"Okay, I think you're jumping to a few conclusions there, bro. Seriously, read the room! Did we look hostile to each other when you came in? This is all one big misunderstanding!"--
"Well, that's a bit hypocritical of you." Dabi was dead-eyed as he glared down Tensei a small amount of smoke beginning to leak from his hand, which was currently on your arm. Painful, sure, but not bad in comparison to everything else.
--"For Cripes Sake! We've talked about this before! I was almost guaranteed to be attacked out of self-defense at least once in my life! We all knew this! Tenya's made charts about this!"--
Tensei took a menacing step forward, "I think you need to put my sister down now before you cause her any further harm. Face me like the thug you seem to pride yourself on being."
--"Ouch Tensei! That was harsh. Listen, I know this looks bad, but maybe we could all just take a breath and go get cookies! You know, that place mom really likes! That would be a lot of fun... Please?"--
Unfortunately, all your pleas were ignored as Dabi shoved you off his lap and moved to stand, flames already enveloping his hand. Okay. This was definitely getting into the irreparable part of the scale.
They stood face to face for a moment, but you weren't about to let them fight... At least, that was the hope.
With an unsteady and very painful wobble, you forced yourself to your feet and threw yourself forward, between the battle of testosterone.
"Okay, that's ENOUGH!" You screamed, silencing the whole alleyway. Even rats shut up to hear what you would say at that moment. Your leg made you want to die, but that didn't change the fact that you were not putting up with either of their bullcrap at the moment, "Would both of you stop ignoring me when I'm trying to explain what happened?!"
Your look must have been truly fearsome, because as you looked between them, they looked away, at least a little ashamed.
"I know you're a mama bear Tensei, but chill, please. Dabi attacked me because I popped up at the worst time and place possible! For all he knew I was a... a..." I paused and looked helplessly at Dabi, not quite sure of what the right word to use would be.
He blinked with confusion, "Low-level thug?"
"Exactly!" You cried out, feeling vindicated, "A thug coming to steal and hurt him. It really doesn't matter what he was doing at any other point, because this is a shady place, in places like this, you have to expect and be prepared for shady crap to happen!"
For a moment, you were afraid that nothing you had just said mattered as you swayed dangerously on your leg. No weight was placed on the injured one, but your whole body was protesting being upright to the best of its ability. Black spots covered your vision for a moment, but you blinked them away, not having time to pass out right now.
"I love you bro, but even you had to see this coming!" You pleaded, grasping for something to stay upright with, "Why else would you make me wear this thing?"
You gestured vaguely with the arm that held your tracking bracelet, though it probably looked more like wild flailing as you were about three seconds from falling flat on your face. It may not have been the best moment, but Dabi seemed to notice the near disaster and stepped forward, acting as your crutch.
He grabbed the arm that had the tracking bracelet and looked at it critically, "You make her wear a locator?" He asked, condemnation heavy in his voice.
Sure, the atmosphere in the alleyway was still dangerous, but the flame in Dabi's hand had gone out, and Tensei didn't look quite as ticked off... No, now your brother looked more embarrassed than anything.
He opened his mouth multiple times, trying to find his words as his hands began chopping involuntarily, an action that would have had you laughing had the situation been different.
Tenya had been the real advocate for the tracker, the idea of it always made Tensei uneasy.
You were all for the tracker, it had saved your bacon in more than one situation, so with a small coo that made Dabi look at you like he was rethinking not killing you, you looked up at him, "Aw, what happened to the bad guy that was so ready to charbroil me a few minutes ago? You worried about me, Patches?"
Okay, he was definitely contemplating killing you now.
Perhaps the rough spots you always managed to get yourself in weren't always the result of your quirk.
A quick flip of your wrist brought his heat down a couple of degrees, "Believe me, this baby has saved my life more than once. It's amazing the weird stuff you find when you can't control where you go."
Tensei coughed and it sounded suspiciously like he was saying "Understatement,' but you didn't really have the energy to care.
"Speaking of which," You said, your movements far more sluggish than you would like, "Tensei, you might want to run to the last... Two? Hm... yeah, just the last two locations I went. I probably caused a bit of chaos."
The two men looked at you in disbelief and you waved the tracking bracelet around some more, (Dabi was quickly becoming less a crutch, and more the only thing that was keeping you standing) "I'm telling you, this thing is dead useful."
A long-suffering sigh came from your brother and you were pretty sure that the man holding you up was trying not to laugh.
Your brother took a step towards you, ignoring the way Dabi flinched, "Hm," He said, looking into your eyes, "Pupils dilated beyond normal," His hand reached out and pressed gently against your neck, "Skin pale and several degrees colder than it should be, and elevated pulse. You're in the beginning stages of shock (Y/N)."
Wow... Your brother was so brilliant.
Your eye roll at Tensei's obvious statement was a tangible thing. A heavily burnt leg that possibly required immediate amputation was something that practically required shock.
If you hadn't been the mature young lady that you obviously were, you would answer with something like, 'Gee, Really?!' or *Gasp* 'You're right, Tensei, I am so shocked right now!' But you refrained from doing that... No matter how much you did wanted to, saying something like that would only be poking the sleeping mama bear that was Iida Tensei.
Instead, you nodded and tried to be as mature as was possible in your current condition, "True, but my shock left behind a wake of destruction. There's a pufferfish out there that may never recover because of me."
A soft snort came from behind you, at least you were still able to amuse someone.
Tensei, on the other hand, was far from being amused, "You need to go to the hospital, (Y/N). Standing around here will only make your condition worse."
Well, this certainly was a pickle. "Patches here'll take me," You said, your voice slurring ever so slightly, " Dabi yelped, he obviously didn't want to be dragged into it, "The civilians need Ingenium right now, not Tensei, and I've got someone here to help me."
Your case was sound, heroes didn't always have the luxury of being attentive to family, and he was at the beginning of his shift. Tensei looked between you and Dabi, who was still fuming about your pronouncement, with hesitation.
"Is she just saying that?" He asked after a moment's hesitation, "Or would you really take her to the hospital?"
The surprises just kept coming for Dabi. No doubt he didn't think Tensei, who was ready to throw down with him just moments before, would be willing to trust his little sister to his- admittedly- sketchy hands.
There was a beat of hesitation as Dabi looked between the two of you, "You... You would let me? Wouldn't that be stupid?"
If any emoji encompassed what Tensei looked like at the moment, it would the sweatdrop one. You know, the one that hat the top of the yellow head shaded blue while the thing's eyes stared straight ahead, praying for death?
Yeah, that one.
You found it incredibly comical, as Tensei looked into the middle distance and contemplated some intense looking algorithms. He didn't quite know why he was considering letting this obvious thug take his little sister to the hospital, but that seemed to be his life right now.
It was almost too much for you, but thankfully, he regained himself after a moment, "I suppose it might be. However, (Y/N) has quite the habit of making fires whenever her quirk activates, so it is my duty to go clean them up. Besides." He looked down at you with a softness in his eyes, "She isn't one to trust easily, and yet she is touching you without any hesitation."
"I trust her."
Your incoherent grumbles about being right there went ignored as Tensei turned towards the entrance of the alleyway, "Will you do it?"
Dabi was still frozen in place as he watched Tensei stand there, his jaw gaping. It took a half-hearted elbow to his gut from you to snap him out of it, "Um... Do you want me to go to any particular hospital?"
It was hilarious. This man, who had been a tiger just moments before, was now acting just as shy and unsure as a kitten.
Shock certainly could be one heck of a drug.
The hero Ingenium was back as the metal man shook his head, "No, just... Be careful, and if she gets away from you..."
"There'll be hell to pay."
