Chapter 17- A Penny for No Thoughts
"Giri?"
It was impossible... Okay, not really, you were standing in a world of the dead, surrounded by people who had ridiculously strong powers, and talking to a man who made portals for the bad guys.
This was one of the least weird things that had happened to you in the last few weeks.
You could feel the tears beginning to make tracks down your cheeks as you scrambled to stand, eyes never leaving the man who so many years ago, you knew so well. He was here, in the flesh, and there was no villain attack, no overprotective Dabi, and no mother sitting over your shoulder watching you. It was just him and you.
It was overwhelming, to an extreme, yet there was something... nice about it. Even after all these years, he still gave you a feeling of comfort.
"Hello..." He faded off as you stared at each other, your eyes wide, and his eyes just as smokey as ever (Were those his eyes? They could be ears, so would it be rude to stare at his ears? No... Now was definitely not the time to think about this), and immediately the moment turned awkward. Neither of you spoke, instead, you began to fidget as the urge to fill the silence hit you hard.
But what were you supposed to say after more than ten years?
Perhaps something profound would make sense, or just jump straight into asking about your quirk and how he factored into the equation. Hmm... That wouldn't be bad. Or ask about your mother, why he killed her that night (You weren't always the brightest bulb in the box, but you weren't that dense, you'd put those pieces together ages ago). The possibilities were endless.
"So," You gulped, taking a small step forward, watching as his head tilted, "Made plans to murder any more children lately?"
.
.
.
You'd think that at some point you'd just learn to shut your mouth. What was it the Americans liked to say? Something about three strikes? Yeah, that about summed up the whole situation, uh-huh.
For a moment, the silence remained, the tension in the air about four times higher than it had been before, and you mentally scouted the landscape for a nice tall cliff to launch yourself from. Giri speaking stopped you, "You seem to be trying to insult me, but I regret to inform you that I have made no such plans."
Seriously? He... Did he just answer you? Anyone else would've taken offense, or just brushed the comment off.
"Oh." Your voice squeak like an old toy and you fought the weak feeling in your knees, trying not to let terror overcome you.
"Though I must admit that while I have made no such plans, Shigaraki has been making many, and a majority of them will likely end in bloodshed." As your eyes became rounder, you couldn't help but feel that the man in front of you was like a puppy. Curious and looking for praise because he answered your question.
At least he wasn't trying to kill you, that was one major plus side, and another was that he was obviously willing to answer questions, so yeah... Little blessings.
Perhaps it was out of character for you, you weren't really a curious person by nature, it honestly wasn't in you to be one after everything, but that rare sensation drove you to take another step forward, almost into arm's length for him, "Who are you?" You muttered, watching his every move, wishing the smoke would part and tell you what you wanted to know.
"Oh, yes, pardon me," Giri either ignored your change in demeanor or chose not to pay it any heed as he leaned forward into a bow, "I never officially introduced myself. My name is Kurogiri, a member of the League of Villains."
A part of you truly did try to fight the deadpan that wanted to get out at that, but the urge was too strong, League of Villains? Seriously? How much more generic-sounding could you get. The Association of Heros! The Gaggle of Vigilantes! There were so many good group names out there and they went with League of Villains?
You weren't mad, you were just disappointed.
Still, the newly proclaimed Kurogiri still didn't notice, instead, he straightened back up and began looking around, "May I ask where we are, (Y/N)?" I do believe I was just cleaning the bar, yet, unless I am much mistaken or under the effects of some quirk, this is not the bar.
Accurate assumption... Though the idea of explaining why he was here sounded like a headache. Time for some well-applied redirection, "Giri?" Agitation was bubbling beneath your skin as you gripped your elbow, hoping beyond hope that the feeling would fade, "Why did you kill my mother?"
He was silent, the feeling of his eyes on you intense, though no feelings of malice or irritation were present... It was as comforting as it could be right now.
"Your mother?" He looked up, searching the green sky for answers, "Oh, yes. I remember her."
It felt like your heart leaped in your chest as you stared. He was certainly an odd one... Perhaps odd enough to answer your questions if you were lucky. "The woman who birthed you is someone I would hardly call your mother. I remember speaking with the master about her on more than one occasion. He... He informed me that what she did wasn't something that any mother, or woman for that matter, should do."
Really? Was that some sexism you were seeing from the 'master'? Wow, he really sounded like a stand-up guy. You'd love to meet him.
"She was a problem from what he said, though perhaps the punishment was too strict. I didn't think she needed to die but the Master told me to kill her and bring you to him because of the quirk he had been so interested in, so I did as he asked. At least... I did the first part."
Hearing Kurogiri talk about this was as curious as it was disturbing. At no point while talking did he show strong emotion, there was some curiosity, along with disinterest, but that was it. There was no regret, no pride, no malice. He was just... Stating facts. While gazing languidly at the sky.
That, more than anything else, is what sent a shiver down your spine.
"He wasn't happy that I failed to bring you to him, I believe he had planned on draining you of your quirk, either that or experimenting on you. After all, he was very curious about your potential when he first heard of you." With practiced ease, Giri sat on a small growth of crystal, shaking his head, "Perhaps I should have just brought you, it certainly would have saved me a scolding."
"Why?" You could feel the croak in your voice as the words practically leaped from you. You were shaking, and the more he said, the faster your heart rate climbed. Kurogiri hadn't been protecting you from your mother, he'd been preserving you, like a test subject, waiting for the perfect time to pick you. "If this master of yours means so much to you, why didn't you take me to him?" The words were hissed as you fingers dug into your forearms, desperately trying to stop your heart from pounding out of your chest.
His eyes were piercing as he stared at you, calculating.
How dare he.
"I see your quirk is very much activated by emotion, just as your mother's was. Does it have any other triggers? I'll confess to being curious."
You didn't have to look to know that lilac was misting off your skin, rising along with the anger that was quickly replacing shock. No... you truly couldn't look down. Your eyes were pinned directly to the man in front of you, wanting nothing more than to lunge forward and try something rash. "Don't change the subject. I asked you a question and I expect an answer."
The deep purple smoke faltered for a moment, just a moment, as the silence bloomed. It seemed you'd surprised him. You caught a glimpse of piercing yellow eyes before the smoke obscured his face again, "Oh? Did I anger you?" There was an innocence in his voice, which only ticked you off more, "I do apologize, that wasn't my intention in telling you this. Have I done something wrong?"
Blood was rushing past your ears, and for a moment, you saw purple. "Why did you leave me at that orphanage?" No, keep in under control. You couldn't explode. You needed. To stay. Calm.
He was silent. Simply staring at you as you spiraled out of control. You knew that your eyes, which were normally so calm and happy, were sharp as a blade and twice as deadly. It didn't make sense to you why you'd become so mad so quickly, but here you were.
"(Y/N). Please, calm do-"
"JUST ANSWER THE FUCKING QUESTION!"
Lilac mist exploded from you, engulfing the area and the scenery was swallowed. For a moment you saw a bar with a blue-haired man at the counter before all was purple once more, then there was a large man sitting in an even larger chair, his face destroyed and a breathing apparatus around his mouth. He yelled and you felt a pull, but you were gone too quickly, the two of you being thrown into a wooden room, Kurogiri dropping to his knees as you came to rest.
Your eyes burned as you stared down at him, lilac continuing to pour from you, faster than before. A woman stepped into your view, and all you were able to see was a tattoo on her very much exposed stomach and the equivalent of purple lingerie before the lilac rose once more. She smiled as you disappeared.
There was no sneezing, yet you still felt like you'd been pulled in four directions at once. All anger left you and you slumped to the side, still standing, but exhausted. "Just... Just tell me why, Giri."
The man in question was still kneeling before you, breathing labored as his smoke began to fade. He was grimacing in pain as he clutched his ribs.
"You've grown more powerful than I could have expected, (Y/N)." He managed between gulps of air, "If you were trained, you'd be just as terrifying as the Master had hoped." He looked up at you and smiled before the smoke flared back around him, "I apologize. I should have found you years ago to tell you the truth, but circumstances never permitted, and I didn't want to compromise your position."
He carefully pushed himself back onto the crystal seat from before, wincing as he moved, "The story is long, and far more boring then it might seem, so I will spare you some details, but to answer your question first, (Y/N), I didn't bring you to the master because from what I had been led to understand, it wasn't something a father should do."
Wait...
What...
Did he just tell you... What you thought he told you?
Was he seriously telling you that... He was your dad?
"Parenting was something I never wanted, to put that mildly. Children are irritating, yet your mother had a quirk that complimented mine, she could find any item she wanted when experiencing heightened emotion. It was seen as a useless quirk, and, as such, she was nothing more than a low-level villain. Master saw a potentially powerful quirk that could be created if our quirks were mixed, so he had us create a child, despite her... Reluctance."
No.
Oh no. Your stomach began to twist as you realized what he was telling you. A quirk marriage. No, not even that. A quirk conception. A non-consensual quirk conception. The hatred that had always been in your mother's eyes when she looked at you made sense now. Your existence was literally the root of all her problems.
There was still no spark of real emotion from Kurogiri as he shook his head, "That woman should never have been a parent either, and from what little I read about children after you were born, she did not treat you as a child should be treated. I asked the Master if we should remove you from her, but you were simply to be there until your quirk manifested, then you would be brought to him or disposed of, so there was no need."
This just kept getting worse, every time he opened his mouth, what came out was worse than the time before. At this point, you weren't sure whether you were going to throw up or start crying. You dropped to your knees, not even feeling the sting of protest that came as a result. You couldn't pry your lifeless eyes from Kurogiri's feet, praying he would stop talking.
You were given no such luck.
"I don't know how much you remember about that night, (Y/N)," His voice mocked you as your vision swam, "But the day I killed your mother, your quirk manifested and you teleported across the room. It was lucky I was there, as your mother easily proclaimed that she had no intention of telling anyone about it. She screamed that she would keep you from us and stop the master from getting what he wanted. She even tried to kill you, and most likely would have succeeded if I had not... intervened."
"Please," You managed to get out, "Stop."
And stop he almost did. "You seem distressed." Was he an idiot? Of course you were distressed! You came here looking for answers, and you found more than you'd bargained for. Perhaps... Perhaps with time, it would make sense, it would stop seeming like the sky was caving in on you.
This couldn't be your undoing. "Kurogiri." With a strength that you didn't know you had, you forced yourself to stand, tears rolling down your cheeks that you couldn't bring yourself to wipe away. "Thank you."
He was confused, you couldn't blame him for that, you'd be confused in his position too.
"You told me what I was asking, so thank you. I just wish..." Wish what? That it was a happier story? That he was just a bit less willing to give answers? Maybe. "No. Never mind. Thank you for not bringing me to whoever your boss is, but I think we're done here."
Talking to him was confusing and painful, you couldn't do this anymore. There was more you'd been wanting to ask, but it felt like your brain was a full sponge, it just wouldn't accept any more information, and that... well, you didn't really have any choice but to accept that. To hell with him, you didn't want to be here anymore.
Almost as though the world around you was waiting for the command, everything began to ripple like a bad mirage, it felt... right.
"Wait, (Y/N)," Kurogiri stood quickly and stepped forward, "We have so much to talk about still, I would like to know how your quirk is progressing, if you have it under control, what might help you."
He would have continued, but you were done, it was ironic, after so many tears of struggling, only now were you being offered help for this. But you didn't want it. "No," You smiled a bitter smile, "You gave up any rights you had to know about my life years ago. If I learn how to control this, it won't because you helped me."
The world disintigrated around you, leaving you back in that flower circle from before. Something was changing, you could feel it. You were in pain, and you really just wanted to cry for a while, but something felt lighter in you. You weren't as worried about this.
You needed to control your quirk, and nothing that had happened today did anything for that, but you felt... Free.
"(Y/N)?"
Slowly, you turned to see everyone, Dabi, Hagakure, Meliodas, Diane, Ban, and one other person floating a few feet off the ground. They were all looking ragged, but there was a smirk on Ban and Dabi's faces, equally mischievous. Hagakure almost tackled you as you stood there, just staring. "You came to the Necropolis too?" She chirped, stepping back just enough for you to see blood dripping down want you assumed was her face, "We didn't even know you were up!"
It was all so cheerful, so welcoming, that you couldn't help it. Without another thought, you burst into tears.
