Chapter 11- Can Today Just Be Over?
The hooded cloak proved to be an amazing asset as you stepped out into the sunlight, keeping your face hidden from the sun could only mean good things as you started across the square.
If you could just keep from sneezing again today then perhaps you'd be able to get back to the tavern, safe and sound. You met one awesome person, seen more of the world, and even got this sweet cloak... Because cloaks never should've gone out of fashion, in your opinion. If there was one thing you could bring back with you from this world, it would be your new favorite clothing item.
And yes, that meant the cloak was more important to you than Dabi.
Maybe not Hagakure, but it was a close one.
"Hey!" A voice shouted across the square and you grimaced. It was okay, this was fine. They probably weren't even talking to you, there were a lot of people here.
"There she is, the one who tried to ambush me with magic!" Ambush with magic? Whoever did that was ballsy. Hm... It would probably be suspicious not to turn and look. That was what normal humans did, right?
Plastering the most confused look on your face, you turned to the person who yelled, only to see a finger pointing squarely at you.
Fun. Okay.
Several guards stepped forward as you yelped, "What? I didn't attack you!"
Swords were pointed at you as you looked around, now you really were the center of attention... You could even see Zoltan sticking his head out of his shop to look at you in shock.
When would you have had time to attack anyon... Oh, wait.
Vaguely you remembered a sword swinging at your head after you sneezed.
Another person who thought you were attacking because you popped in on them.
"Seize her!"
They weren't even going to listen to what you had to say?!
At this point, it was pretty easy to see that fate was now actively hiring hitmen to mess with you as the guards rushed forward.
And you know what? You weren't going to sit here and go to jail. Something told you these people wouldn't be nearly as nice to you as the police back home were.
"STOP!" You raised your hand theatrically above your head, catching their attention. You just needed to stop them long enough for you to sneeze. Your other hand pulled the cloak off your head and you looked around, squinting slightly in the mid daylight.
Neither theater nor improv were skills you possessed, but you did your best as you glanced at the knights who were watching you warily.
You silently urged your quirk to hurry up. Normally it had no problem pulling you around the moment you stepped into the sun, but now it decided to take its dear, sweet time. Now was not the time to be dear or sweet!
"I would think twice before trying to grab me," You said trying to get your voice to be any lower... It didn't work.
What to say... come on, think of something!
"Touch me, and you'll earn the wrath of one of the Seven Deadly Sins!"
NOT THAT!!!
Welp... there went your life. You could physically see the shift in the guards' eyes as they looked at you.
Instead of just being irritated or whatever they had been, there was a look of determination and anger in the ones you could see. They might have just arrested you before, and you'd get out of there once they looked away, but now...
Have you mentioned how bad you are under pressure?
Wait! A sneeze was building!
"Is that so?" One particular guard stepped forward and you froze at the cotton candy hair. Okay, this was going from bad to worse. Not only was he a knight, but he was also apparently a holy knight.
Just lovely. What was that? Karma? Nice to meet you.
"If you're a sin, then which one?" He stepped closer again and you had to force yourself to not back down... Not that it was possible, knights had moved in behind you to cut off any escape. "After all, you could just be a petty criminal trying to take advantage of the fear people hold for the sins."
Oh geez... Why'd he have to call you out like that? Your day was going badly enough without him jumping in here and making it worse... especially since he had seen you hiding in a tree because a dog was mildly threatening to you.
No, the sneeze was coming, just bluff. Use those lecturing skills that came with being an Iida.
You knew there were seven sins, and you knew two of them, but the others were... Less obvious. You had heard the names Ban and King because those two were apparently the next ones Meliodas wanted to go after, but that was about it...
Somehow you doubted saying that you were Diane would work too much because if anything was known about these people, it would probably be their race.
And you were pretty obviously not a giant.
And you couldn't just stand there either! Too much silence and you were positive the guards would attack.
Once again your eyes met Zoltan's and you smiled at the scandalized look he had. No doubt he was irritated that he helped a criminal, but he wouldn't be getting the cloak back, it was way too cool.
"And why should I tell you that?" You said casually, trying to pump as much false confidence into your voice as was possible, "The moment I tell you, you'll know my power set. I think for now it'll be more amusing for me to let you guess."
Was it your best bluff ever? No, but it would have to do for now.
You smiled all the wider to hide the grimace that was coming on. If they bought this, it would be a miracle and you would immediately go buy whatever counted as lottery tickets around here.
Your hands were shaking ever so slightly, so you tucked them into the cloak, looking up at the sun once more as you tried to encourage the sneeze.
The cotton candy man scoffed, "Please, I believe that's the worst excuse I've ever heard. If you're trying to lie to me, you'll need to do better than that."
Okay, so he hadn't bought it, this could be a problem, but you could still work with it, "Oh?" You said, taking the slightest step forward, praying that no one would react violently and put the swords in their hands to use, "Then explain what happened earlier?" Your voice echoed oddly across the square, making literally everyone pause as they looked between the two of you.
"How would I have been able to teleport as I did without some kind of formal training?"
He paused, his jaw tightening as you stared each other down. That's right, Cotton candy here was standing before the queen of BS, all were encouraged to bow and cower before you.
Okay, not really, but it still felt good.
And what the heck was keeping that sneeze?! Any other day you would've been sent to five different locations in the space of time it was taking this one sneeze to manifest.
You risked it, quickly, you looked up at the sun once more and stared. It wasn't the most pleasant thing in the world, but that never failed to make you sneeze.
"She's lying!" His voice reached you and you began to curse as you stared harder, "Get her before she has a chance to get away!"
The jingle of armored plated boots rushed at you, but it was too late, just as you felt hands grasp your arms, the long-awaited sneeze hit you with violence that had you ducking your head, sneezing loudly as you were pulled away, the familiar vice grip of your quirk hitting you.
Finally. You did it. maybe this whole nightmare of a day would end and all you would need to do was get back to the bar and- oh no.
Cool darkness hit you, which felt quite nice, you had to admit, but the niceness of them moment was overshadowed by the thing chained up in front of you. It was a giant creature, it's red skin, horns, and bloated body making it look like one of the creepy Pasta's that Tensei had been obsessed with as a teenager.
Not that he would ever admit it, but that was beside the point.
If you had to guess, the creature was well over 20 feet tall and hanging slightly off the ground thanks to the chains that encircled its whole body.
The two guards who had been unfortunate enough to have grabbed you just before you sneezed collapsed to the ground, but you took no notice of it, far too busy staring in horror at the being in front of you.
Was it alive?
The bulbous yellow eyes were open and staring blankly at you, which in and of itself had you rooted to the spot.
It was a thing of nightmares... But the longer you looked, the more you were convinced that it was dead.
Not only were the eyes dim and inert, but as you looked over the rest of its body, you noticed it was absolutely covered in slashes, both large and small. One of them seemed to be a deep cut right above the center of its chest, which was gaping open.
Normally a cut like this would be bleeding excessively or at the very least infected, but this cut was simp[y there, unhealed and still.
It was graphic enough that you could feel bile rising up in the back of your throat, but even this was far from the worst thing you had ever seen, so you simply swallowed and continued to examine it for any signs of life.
Perhaps it would have been a better idea to turn around a figure out a way to get the heck out of there, but you couldn't bring yourself to move.
Even with all the quirks back home, you had never seen something like this, and while the chains coiled around its body made you feel semi-secure, something about the sight of it left you frozen to the core.
It didn't help that you had now used your quirk three times in a single day without any food in your stomach. Your body ached with hunger, but that couldn't deter you, not right now.
Finally, after far too long, you broke away from the sight of the thing and turned, ignoring the knights that were on either side of you, slumped against the ground. They both looked as though they had been hit by a train, which was concerning, but not enough to stop you.
A single door was the way out, barely visible in the darkness, the only light in the area a single beam of light coming from a crack in the wall.
It made the whole place infinitely scarier and made you all the more excited to get out as this felt far too much like a horror survival game.
Should you try and get the knights out as well? After all, it wasn't like they wanted to get into this situation... They were probably great people who were just trying to do their best in the world, but... well... they were also in armor, and you weren't the strongest person around.
The idea of dragging one man out of there, when he probably weighed more than 200 lbs stressed you out, and that wasn't even factoring the second man.
Never mind. Hopefully, they would wake up eventually and get out of here themselves, you needed to leave.
... Or not.
As you tried the door, which was more heavily fortified than you were comfortable with, it rattled slightly but stayed shut.
The handle clicked as you tried to open it, but it was locked.
Shoot. You were going to die in here with this terrible monster thing. Either the thing was going to come to life and murder you, or the guards were going to wake up and kill you instead. What a lovely day this was turning out to be.
The single beam of light did absolutely nothing to calm your nerves, in fact, it was just the opposite.
It cast an eery glow over the room, bouncing over the demon and making that the only thing you could look at, which was less than ideal. At least there were plenty of hiding spots in the room, right? That was a good thing, right?
Because hiding would do so much when you starved to death, yeah... Such a good thing.
Oh god, were the thing's eyes glowing?!
No... No. Don't think about that, there were so many other things to think about. Like how Dabi was going to resurrect you when he found out you had died only to kill you again.
Your eyes shot to the shadowy piles on the floor as one of them began to groan.
Okay, just try and think positive. Maybe one of these guys has a key to this room...
Oh wait, they both had swords, right? Swords were things you could take away, preferably before they were alert enough to notice you doing it.
As quickly as you could bring yourself to move in this nearly black room, you moved to them and slipped their swords out of their sheaths, tossing them into the inky blackness that was located under the creature.
Okay, so they wouldn't be able to stab you as soon as they woke up... Their halberds!
Those were the next things to join the swords, clanging loudly as they hit the floor, making your grit your teeth as you looked them over as best you could.
Your only goal here was to take away anything that could kill you immediately, and while getting rid of the pouches on their belts seemed like a good idea, that would require quite a bit more light- and time- than you currently had.
Whatever... it would have to do. Honestly, you didn't want to take too many things from them.
What if they panicked when they woke up and thought that you had kidnapped them on purpose and were holding them captive? You wouldn't even blame them fro attacking you then, so you hoped that having almost all their stuff would...
Ease their minds? Maybe?
Was that even possible in this situation?
With as much grace as you were capable of (not much), you sat down on the floor, cross-legged, and waited, listening to the sounds of the cavern and the men slowly waking up.
"W-Where're we?" A low voice moaned and the grating of armor filled the room, making you wince. "Hey... Are.. are you alive? Anders?"
An eye cracked open to see the man, now on his knees, shaking the other guard you had dragged along, "He is, don't worry." Your voice was quiet, but it still wasn't enough to stop the man from jumping about a foot in the air as you spoke.
If this had been any other situation, you probably would've started laughing, but you couldn't.
This whole situation had to be scary as heck for him, after all, you had been petrified when you first got here too, and you weren't under the assumption that an evil witch or whatever had captured you.
"What did you do to him!" He was angry now, the shadow of his hand reaching to where his sword had been not too long ago.
You knew taking it away from him would be a good idea.
Now, how truthful should you be? Would he even believe you if you told him that this was one big accident?
Your sigh was heavy, "I didn't do anything. You both passed out when I teleported away. You were touching me, so you got to be unintentional passengers." There, that sounded believable enough... right?
The man sprang to his feet, and even without being able to really see him, you could feel the righteous fury burning in his eyes... Aaanndd, here we go, he was about to jump into a speech, wasn't he?
"How dare you spirit us away, you vile witch!"
Ooh, he really was dipping into his creative reserves for those names, wasn't he?
"First you attack that innocent man back in the city, and now you have taken two knights of the kingdom! There is no place here for heathens such as yourself!"
Wow, misunderstandings and namecalling all at once? It must be your lucky day.
"I have been tasked with protecting this city from ingrates such as yourself, so it doesn't matter what magic you try on me! I will prevail!"
All because he thinks he has the moral high-ground? Well, that's rich.
"I will bring you to justice, witch, the moment my partner here wakes up you will be-"
"-Hey, do you know where we are?" You cut him off, not really caring to listen to anything else he had to say... Especially since you had a feeling it would be nothing more than a repeat of what he already said.
The man faltered for a half a second before he took a step towards you, "Well we're obviously in your lair, witch, and while that perhaps means you have the advantage over us, we will still come-"
"No seriously." There was no time for this sad excuse of a comedy of errors, "If we were in my house or wherever you think we are, do you really think I would still be in here with you guys?"He may have plenty of conviction, but you could already tell that common sense was in short supply here.
The man opened his mouth, but the only thing that came out was the sound of hiss, like a tire deflating for a moment, before he collected himself, "Well, obviously you are looking to gloat about how you captured us!"
Wow... Okay.
Sure, you would've been freaked out in his position too, but even your emotionally logical self could put this situation together a bit better than this.
"Nope." You said casually, popping the 'p' for extra emphasis. "I told you that you too just got dragged along for the ride. If I was really trying to do whatever the heck your trying to imply, then I would have chained you up at the very least. Probably would've taken away your armor too, but I didn't."
Ah, the deflating tire made yet another appearance so soon! It honestly made you want to laugh despite the situation.
"You see, the thing is, I have no idea where we are and I was hoping- maybe a bit foolishly on my part- that you would know and be able to get that door over there open." You pointed to the door, which the knight obviously hadn't seen, "So we can all get out of here."
There was silence for a few seconds as the man seemed to absorb that information while you waited, "You... You don't know where we are?" His voice was so small that you honestly wanted to smack something.
Just as you were about to lose your cool and start getting snarky, the handle on the door rattled. You sprang to your feet, slightly worried about what was going to come through the door and at the same time very excited to get away from this idiot here.
"Yes, the alarm was tripped, but I don't see too much to be worried about, after all, every door up till this point has been locked still." The voice on the other side of the door was deep and stern... And you couldn't help but think that he was in for a big surprise.
A beam of light shot through the door, practically blinding you after spending so long in the darkroom and you squinted, raising a hand to shield your eyes.
"See, nothing is... wrong?"
In the doorway stood a man with long brown hair and a gleaming red suit of armor, who was looking at you as though you were a ghost and a woman, though... you weren't able to take in much, as the knight, who had about jumped out of his skin at the door making noise, saluted, "Grand Holy Knight Dreyfus!"
Somehow, you had a feeling that your long day was only just beginning.
