Chapter 32

Lots of POV switches sorry! (Sorry for the awful haikus too)

~Mikayla's POV~

I still remember

The first day and how he

Smiled to himself

He stared at his paper

Ran his fingers through his hair

Did not say a word

Until I said hi

Forced him to look towards me

But he only frowned

And then a boy came

The frown turned into a smile

And they turned to me

They were my first friends

The two boys no one would love

Became family

"Haikus again?"

I slam the small journal shut and shove it down my pocket, swirling around hastily to meet Moon leaning over my shoulder. At least he can't read English well...

"I can read English fine."

"Uh...A-Are we close?" I cough, turning away from his stare and awkwardly biting my lip to seem more attractive. I play with my hair, a move Claire told me drove men crazy. Moon seems unaffected though, his mind purely on the roof of a house in the distance.

Dragging my snow boots through the ice I let my body drift closer to his, swaying my hand so it'll hit his. "Why do you write those?" He asks, running his fingers through his hair and pushing it from his eyes. I hop over a small rock in the ground still trying to let the image of Moon in pain drift from my memory. He'd recovered quickly, saying it was just a sudden wind.

I shrug my cloaked shoulders, glancing back at Claire for guidance. "I don't know."

Smoke rises from above the shingled roof, a fog floating over the clouds as we grow closer to the house. I can't recall how long we've been walking, how long it's been since I've eaten but my legs carry on with what little energy I have. But something feels wrong, the way Moon tenses up beside me, his hand avoiding mine and falling inside his pockets.

"Someone lives there don't they?"

He ignores my question, biting down on his lip instead and blindly trudging through the snow. "You're going to kill them aren't you?"

"They'll be dead by the time we get there." The fog clears out, the smoke no longer being spit out of the soot covered chimney. The melting snow around it's base is already freezing over, a shiver falling down my spine at what the sudden quiet means. "Kaiien told me."

"I didn't know he could still see things..." He had brought it up once, at a sleepover, that he was able to see into the future but we didn't press the subject.

Moon nods, once more avoiding my gaze. "We don't talk about it." We walk in silence, listening to the other's conversations as we grow nearer with each crunching step. "Do you miss your family?" He whispers, raising an eyebrow and assisting me with climbing over a frozen log.

I stare absentmindedly at the over turned trunk, ants frozen in a sheet of ice an inch thick, berries and seeds draped over their backs as they leave. Moon waits for me as the group walks on, leaning next to me to become eye level with the doomed insects. "Sometimes I do but sometimes I don't. That probably doesn't make much since though does it?"

He shakes his hair, the strands falling back to his neck slightly fluffier than before. "I understand. It's why I leave, because I know I won't miss them." He says, pointing to a stray ant on the wood. "But I always come back because I love them. You always miss those you love." He points at the same ant, but this time I see what he sees, how it's body is angled as if it was trying to turn back around towards it's family.

"You don't seem to love them." I whisper more so to myself than the unfocused boy ahead of me, his finger hovering slightly over the insect.

"It's hard for me to love...but that doesn't mean I can't. We're getting close." He adds off topic, pointing towards the shingled rooftop ahead of us. "Do you know self defense by the way?"

Laughing at his hopscotch of thought changes Moon raises a brow at me, smiling slightly to himself at my reaction. "Not much," I answer, calming down though my chest still heaves and my throat dries. "but enough to help me get away if something happens."

"I want to teach you." I bite my lip to hide the smile, daydreams of play fighting with Moon rolling into mind. "And Claire." He adds, though something bitter hides in his tone.

"Just because Claire broke up with Kai that doesn't give you a good reason to hate her."

Ignoring my comment he simply pushes his hair out of his eyes, closing them briefly as he shakily exhales. "Can you punch?"

"Yes, but-"

"Punch my arm." I glance up at the cloaked figure beside me, trying to telepathically communicate that he's out of his mind. "C'mon." He urges with a flash of a smile, face lighting up for a brief moment. "Hit me."

My eyes dart between the strawberry blonde a few people away and the more than sculpted arm in front of me. She gives a small wink, mouthing to do bad. Guys like weak girls right? My hand barely collides with Moon's flesh before I limply give up, pouting slightly as I glance towards Claire for approval. "I guess I can't punch as well as I thought." I sigh, taking a small step closer though my voice shakes, hands sweating and face paling.

Moon lets out a small laugh, engulfing my hand in his and briefly squeezing the two together. "We'll work on it." We land ourselves in silence, Moons quiet yawns filling the absence for a brief moment. Why can't I just talk to him like I talk to Kai? Or my brother? We're basically family by now anyways. Drifting away from Moon I fall near Claire, desperate for some kind of guidance.

"Want some help?" She laughs, even in the middle of the apocalypse or whatever this is she still has perfectly applied makeup. Her hair is done up and her nail polish has yet to chip. No wonder people prefer her, she's perfect.

"Is Moon out of my 'league'? Be honest."

She gives a faint sigh, folding her arms before pursing her lips at me. "You two wouldn't work out." Claire shrugs at me as some sort of apology before continuing. "Have you tried James? You're both kind of nerdy. I don't know what you see in Moon anyways, have you seen the guy? Just because he has a hot body that doesn't mean you should just run after him! He's crazy!"

"Then why were you telling me to do this and that!"

"I don't know!" She shouts, curling her manicured nails into a fist. Moon shushes us from afar, pulling me down beside him behind two large bushes seated in front of the house.

Kai holds a frail hand over Claire's mouth from across from us, annoyance spreading through her like the plague. The seat beside me chills as Moon gets up and crosses the small space between us and the oak door, his hand freezing before turning the knob and screaming.

In a blur we all rush up, my body tossed about by a concerned Clide as we all rush towards the house, greeted by a muscular man draped in furs.

~Moon's POV~

"Bunny!"

"Matt!" I rush towards him, planting a soft kiss on his cheeks as we embrace, the furs wrapped around his body engulfing us in a furnace.

"Moon!"

I turn at the sound of Eden's voice from the burned staircase, my cheeks slightly turning red to match his hair. My lips graze Matt's ears, the skin trembling slightly under my touch. "Does he know that-"

"No." His attention turns from me to Julius, an emotion somewhere between sadness and joy crossing his features. "Are you Julius?"

Jules nods, an awkward silence forming between them that Kaiien can't help but jump into. "So have we all fucked Moon or..."

Matt bites his lower lip, avoiding Eden's gaze. "He took my virginity."

"He's my servant." Julius shrugs, failing to hide a smile.

Eden pouts playfully, joining us around the small kitchen table. "How did I miss out on all the fun?"

I ignore his comment, blocking out the various small talk and awkward glares to focus on Kaiien, his frail body being supported by the marble counter. "Are you okay? With everything?"

His eyes widen once he receives my message, shrugging one shoulder as the other bumps against the fridge. "What do you mean?" I can't ignore the way his eyes water under the dim lights, an oversized sleeve coming up to his face.

"Me being with Julius. I haven't spent much time with you...we're in the same room but I still miss you."

He lets out a sigh, motioning towards the staircase. "Let's talk upstairs. Where we can actually talk." I allow a bony hand to wrap around mine, pulling me up the steps two at a time. Kai drags us into an empty bedroom, the white sheets slightly burned and wooden frame charred.

I fall back against the damaged furniture, Kaiien climbing on top of me with his hands on either side of my head, knees digging into my sides as I hold him up by the waist. His hair falls around his face as he looks down at my laying figure, my hand coming up to brush the stray hair away but he moves back with a light laugh.

"I've missed you." I can't help but notice the strain in his voice, how his hips roll against me with each word.

I collide my lips with his, pulling him down towards me in the bed and rolling so I'm on top, his legs wrapped around my hips as he laughs. "I've missed you more."

His smile begins to fade, showing way to his hollow cheeks and graying complexion. "Do you love Julius more than me?"

"No...why?"

"When you get near him...you start to feel weird. My body starts tingling and I feel lightheaded..." He starts, voice straining with the tears begging to fall.

"Kaiien," I sigh, wiping a tear from his cheek. "I love you. Do you know what that means?"

"That everything you do, you do for me even if I don't realize it. But I don't see how you're doing me a favor by fucking another man." He adds bitterly, crossing his arms underneath me.

"Look, this may not be the best time but-"

"Want to have-"

"You know I don't like to without-"

Kaiien let's out a small laugh, firmly pressing his smile against my already puckering lips. "Condoms?"

"You'll-" Smothered in another kiss my train of thought wrecks, the only thought on my mind being the heat spreading from the base of my spine towards my head. I grow lightheaded all over, my fingertips numb as I arch my body over the frail boy and greet his neck with my lips.

Kai's body stills, the small pants and moans ceasing as he lifts his body up towards the door, smiling guiltily at a wide-eyed Jules.

~Julius's POV~

"Y-you're d-dad wants you two..." I stare at my snow boots, the ice melting over the worn wood tiles of the empty bedroom. Kai's bony shoulder brushes mine on his way out, the contrast from Moon's usual hot skin causing me to reach out and rub the damaged spot to manually warm it.

"Jul-"

Moon's voice has me frozen on my way out the damned room. The metallic flavor of blood fills my throats as I bite down on my lip, clenching my fists to calm myself before turning to face him. He sits up on his knees, face flushed and breath heavy. "We aren't dating, you don't have to apologize."

His shoulders slump, a look of defeat taking over his features. "Then why do I feel so bad?"

I can't help the breathy sigh that escapes through my lips at the sight before me, the boy's hair ruffled and eyes slowly transforming to red. "Because I'm your master." As I cross the room his tears fall, small drops of liquid cascading down his blushing cheeks.

The bed creaks at my sudden weight, Moon limply allowing me to lay him on my lap as his shoulders shudder under the weight of his cries, the salt water leaving stains as they bruise his delicate features. "W-why should that matter?"

"It's just...a bond." I shrug, wiping a tear with my sleeve. "A bond that a part of you feels has been broken even though it hasn't."

His breathing slows down, nimble fingers playing at a loose button on my top. "I've had sex with Kai before and didn't feel like shit afterwards. Nothing," He growls, gripping the button tightly in a fist. "has changed so why now?"

My own fingers drag themselves through his hair, a knotted array of black strands wrapping themselves around each hand as I absentmindedly play with it. "Maybe you've changed."

He seems pained by the thought, the silence of the room thickening as we stare at each other, brown on violet, sad on quiet. "It happens Moon, it's okay." Moon straightens up, leaning his head on my shoulder as he attempts to stand, mind and body thick with emotions he can't understand. "You're father wanted to talk, remember?" But even as he walks towards the damaged door I can't help but feel pained by the thought of him loving Kai. And though Andrew had said Moon knew where he stands between us two I can't help but think the once thick lines have been blurred between a past he can't erase and a present he can't make.

"Coming?"

Wind flows through the slightly cracked windows of the kitchen, the breeze wrapping around our ice cold bodies and planting chilled kisses along our arms, it's hickeys left in the form of goosebumps against too pale skin and trembling lips. I bite back to settle mine, Andrew frowning in the corner of the small room with his hands in his pockets and back against the harsh air.

Kai's eyes meet mine, something hidden behind the sapphire orbs nipping at me, his lips a hard line before he looks away from me, eyes towards the floor and nails clawing at his wrists. "You wanted to talk?" Moon's voice breaks me from Kai, a nervousness in them I can't ignore.

Andrew picks at the table, blinking at the emptiness of it before turning to glance at Moon, pain stabbing at his features. "It's getting colder. I-I-" The blonde stares back down at the table, searching for what to say. "Moon, you know what will happen soon."

"It can't be that soon. It can't." I jump back as his fist collides with the oak, trembling hands coming up to comb through his hair. "Dad." He seems childlike now, as he stands trembling at the barren table, eyes pained and voice straining to get the words out. "Please."

"We just need to work on controlling your fear so that when it does happen you won't be taken off guard." Andrew reaches a hand out but Moon only baks away, falling over a lose beam and drawing his knees to his chest in fear.

I can barely make out Clide whispering about a code red, my mind focused only on Moon scared and crying on the ruined floor. "Can somebody explain...?" I want to reach for Moon, to cradle him against me but Kai beats me to the motion, his frail arms wrapping around the boy on the floor and holding him close.

"Have you ever heard the expression 'when Hell freezes over'?" I nod at Andrew's somber reasoning, confusion etched on my face. "It's derived from a law that states the residents of Hell will be released when the temperature is cold enough that it in fact freezes over."

"So what you mean is-"

I'm cut off by Kai's scratchy voice, plagued with tears as he manages to cough out three little words. "Daddy's coming back?"
