Chapter 13
~Andrew's POV~
The phone rings from across the kitchen as I hastily run over to answer it. Kaiien was just able to go to bed, no need to wake him with unnecessary phone ringing. "Hello?" I answer in as cheery a voice I can muster at twelve in the morning.
"...Hi. Is this Andrew?"
"Yes, this is Andrew speaking. And who is this?" I half whisper into the mobile phone.
"This is Julius..."
"I'm sorry but I don't know of anyone by that name. I'm afraid you have the wrong number." I reply coolly, twirling a paper towel between my forefinger and thumb.
"Wai-"
"Goodbye sir." I move the phone away from my ear, the man's babbles coming through as nothing more than static. The phone rings once again but I turn it to vibrate instead. It rings for the fourth time, an odd feeling forcing me to answer it again. "Is this Julius?" I ask.
"Yes, please don't hang up!" He begs me through the line.
"What can I help you with?"
"Your son."
"Which one? I have about five." I chuckle. Should've known this was one of the boy's friends.
"Moon." I nearly drop the phone on the pristine counter, rage boiling inside of me.
"I don't know who you are or what you want with my son-"
"No, wait-"
"No, you listen to me." I cut him off. "If you are one of those sick bastards after my son I swear to God-"
"I have your son." He whispers.
Without pausing for breath I stride over to the house phone, dialing 911 effortlessly. "Alright," I play along. "can you tell me your address so I can see him?"
"Um sure it's 458...wait. Are you calling the cops?! Sir no-"
"What the hell do you know about my son?" I bark through the speaker, no longer caring about controlling my temper, language, or volume. I will verbally rip this man to shreds.
"He's been missing for five years..."
"Mhm." I tap my foot irritably.
"He's allergic to chocolate and hates to sigh. Uh...he's-"
"Where is he?"
"He's next to me."
"Let me talk to him."
"He's sleeping."
"Wake him up. Give him the phone. Let me talk to my son." I growl.
I listen in on their conversation. "Moon, Moon sweetie wake up. I know you just went to bed but wake up, why are you upset that I called him? Moon, it is your dad he deserves the right to hear from his kid who has been gone for five years. Here just," There is static before a voice that has me dropping to the kitchen tiles.
"Andrew?" Moon questions, his voice dry and achy like it is when he first wakes up. This Julius man wasn't lying then.
"M-moon? Is that you?" I draw my hand to my mouth to stop the sobs dying to get out and instead draw my knees to my chest.
"Yeah. Here give me a minute." There is shuffling on the other end and a closing of a door.
"Are you alright? Is this man hurting you?" I dare to ask now that he seems to be alone.
"No," He laughs, a rare sound I never could forget over the years. "he's amazing. Hey, are you crying?"
"My child has been gone for five years give me a break." We both chuckle and I draw myself closer, pressing my back against the wooden cabinet near the floor.
"I love you so much." I whisper.
"I love you too, I'm sorry for any pain I've caused you." The pitter-patter of socked feet come into hearing range as the living room light flips on then off again. Kaiien stumbles into the kitchen in an oversized T-shirt, clutching his chest tightly.
"Moon. I feel him." His blue eyes pierce into my brown ones and I give him a small nod, his messy black hair moving this way and that. He drops to his knees next to me, grabbing the phone with droopy, oversized sweater hands. "M-moon?" He asks just as I had.
A reply comes from the other end and Kaiien falls into my lap, the phone hanging limply by his ear as he noisily sobs. For a moment there is no talking, just the two boys crying for their loss of each other, their other half. I rock Kaiien and suspect Julius is doing the same for Moon as Kaiien starts to rock his own body in a different rhythm. The boys chat for a minute before Kai hands the phone back to me. "It's a man."
"Thank you." I say, wiping the tears from both our eyes.
"Listen, after that I feel like they need to see each other. How about Moon and I come visit for Thanksgiving? It's just a week away. I'd love to meet the man that raised such a wonderful boy."
"Yes, oh dear God, yes." Laughing hysterically for a bit I pull Kaiien into a gentle yet excited hug. "One week?"
"One week."
I hang up to save the new number to my phone, speed dial number three like it always has been. Turning to Kai I ask, "Are you excited?"
He nods his head and falls back into my chest, tears still streaming down his face. "I've missed him so much."
"I've missed him, too sweetie."
"When do we tell the others?" I help him up from the tile, flashing him a smile.
"How about we make it a surprise for them, eh? They'll know when they see him."
Kai grins tiredly and I ruffle his coal hair some more.
•••
One week until my family is together again. After five long years we will finally be back together. I stare at the ceiling, not quite able to sleep with Kai shaking with excitement in bed next to me. I guess he can't wait either.
