I drag my beaten body through the sand, the tiny crystals piercing my bruised skin. Blood trails behind me painting the silver beach a menacing red.

I breathe in and try to shout out again, "HE-lp me, please." My hoarse voice barely croaks out, my pleading cries now silent in the cold air.

I continue to crawl through the ground, sand wedging itself in my fingernails and sticking to the bloody flesh on my amputated  leg. I near a stone and try to stand up, my actions only being met by agonising pain. I drop to the ground, quiet tears streaming down my face as lay on back defeated and ready to die. After weeks of determination to survive, my body couldn't take it anymore and neither could my mind. I look up at the stars for what may be the last time.

Staring at the glimmering lights I whisper softly, "Papá, I know you and mamá left me to look after Marco, I'm sorry I can't live on for the both of you, and I'm sorry...I couldn't protect him either. I really wish that I could have maybe saved you, then we'd be home together, and eat Avó's famous cozida while Vovó tells of his younger days." But now, you watch me from the heavens as I take my last breaths. At least we'll be together again soon."

I stare at the sky for what seemed like years, every minute my eyes getting heavier and breath slowing down. The full moon begins to set and I feel my soul slowly letting go. I close my eyes and let the light take me to wherever it bids; a small smile on my face.

I squint as I....open my eyes? Adrenaline surges through me as I sit up quickly, darting my eyes around the foreign room. Suddenly my head rings and my vision goes blurry. In an attempt to stop the pain I lay back down and wait for it to subside.

I'm alive. 

 While I close my eyes a million thoughts run through my mind; my heart beating faster and faster at each scary thought. I open my eyes and try to asses my surroundings, my mind still racing with questions. Then, all goes silent as I hear soft  footsteps on wood, the sound slow and steady, each step resonating in my chest.

Fear rises and I slowly sit back up, my eyes wide and heart racing, and look for some kind of weapon. I still had no idea where I was or how I got here so a weapon wouldn't be a bad idea. I dart my eyes around the compact room, my breath uneven and each step increasing my panic. I look for anything, anything at all, but all items are either useless or out of my reach seeing as I have a missing leg. My heart races faster, here I am, helpless in the hands of a stranger. I hold on to the hope that I might live. If they wanted to kill me wouldn't they have already? I lay back down a take a deep breath preparing myself for whatever lies behind the wooden door. Closing my eyes I say my last applogies and wait.

I hear the door swing open, very slowly, as if the person were scared. Still taking no chances I lay still and wait, my body shaking with fear. Gradually the air around me fills up with an oceany scent. And I feel the warmth of a small body beside the cold, hard table I'm laying on.

My curiosity takes charge and I cautiously open my eyes. I squint as I meet the light once more, but turning my head, I meet a sight I wasn't prepared for and just stare.

Because damn, her eyes.

Avó - portuguese word for grandmother

Vovó - portuguese word for  grandfather

Cozida - a portuguese meal.

Heeey y'all sorry for taking a while with the update (writers block came in with the force of an angry wonder woman) but here it is, it's short but a new chapter should be up by Friday night or Saturday morning.

There'll be more context on Atilio later on so don't worry about that aaaaaand I forgot to give a shoutout to my editor  ThatAfricanChick she's serious awesomesauce for putting up with my horrible punctuation.
