2. Virtual Friends

Sanskaar Maheshwari was better known as a live wire. His energy and confidence were always evident, be it with friends or with problems. He believed there were enough problems for everyone in this world and there were equal number of solutions as well.

At a young age, he saw his parents separate due to cultural differences. His mother, Sujata Rathod hailed from a middle class family comprising of her parents and a younger sister. While their parents were repeatedly questioned for not having a son, her father never let the society affect his dreams of educating his daughters.

When they received the marriage alliance of Ram Maheshwari, her parents felt the quiet and reserved groom was a good match for the 18-year old Sujata. However, a few years later, their marriage fell apart when Sujata realised her husband was a mute puppet to his elder brother. Refusing to be the same lifeless robot to her sister-in-law, she took the 4-year old Sanskaar and walked out of the ^Haveli . Fifteen years later, she was successfully running an art gallery in Kolkata, as she refused to leave the city despite the discouragement from her in-laws.

Sujata was the key strength for Sanskaar. Her smile would light up his day. At times, he found her sitting in a dim lit study room thinking of how different her life could be. Sanskaar sat at her feet with his head in her lap. The mother and son wistfully gazed at the moon. The next morning, everything would be back to normal.

Sanskaar was texting in his room, when the most irritating person in his life appeared in the doorway with a box of tissues.

She clicked her tongue and started her taunts. "Look at you. I was thinking of bringing another two boxes of tissues and a tub of ice cream."

"I am not a girl to sulk over a break up." Sanskaar straightened himself.

"Someone called me in the day saying 'Nayra, Kavita ditched me.' Can you please call that person. I came to talk to him."

"You can't see me happy, can you?"

"No. I also can't see you sad."

His mother came in as well with the large ice cream bowl and three spoons. She settled cross legged opposite the friends. "Now, tell us what happened."

"Mom, nothing happened. She left the city because she got admission into a better college. That's it."

Nayra licked the ice cream dripping on the stem of the spoon. "That's so boring. You should say it with more drama."

"Some tears would be a nice addition." His mother agreed with her. "Sanskaar, it's fine. Anyway, she didn't like Nayra talking to you. Any girl who is insecure about your friends will not stay long."

"Okay. Done with the lecture?" Sanskaar took another spoonful, repeatedly glancing at the blinking notification light.

"Sanskaar, Aunty is just saying to console you. I would be glad to hand you over to your girlfriend. May be then, I can find a guy for myself."

"You can find a boyfriend even now. The feeling is mutual."

Sujata received a call and she went to answer. In the meantime, Nayra poked, "Who's that you are messaging so happily?"

"A wrong number." He narrated how he had sent the message meant for Kavita to a stranger.

"Instead of singing 'Milne hai mujhse aayi', you are in mood for 'Apne tu dil ka pata de chahun main ya naa'. Does she have her ^Dp visible? What's her name?"

"I didn't ask neither did I tell her my name. Her Dp is blank. No, I'm not in mood for any song. Happy? Now get lost."

Nayra slapped his shoulder. "^Ehsaan Pharamosh! I came to see you leaving my assignment and you are throwing attitude."

"Go, do your assignment. Thank you for coming, Mummyji. You are worse than a mother-in-law."

"As if you have experience." Nayra gorged two full spoons of ice cream and left the room. At the door, she turned back. "I'm glad that you are fine. Whoever that girl is, my thanks to her for keeping you smiling."

Sanskaar shook his head at Nayra's words. That was his best friend, always ready to bicker but toggled to emotional mode in unexpected times.
