Chapter 1
"Two. . . One. . . Good luck soldiers."
It was an instinctual reaction, his body tensing from the initial descent of his drop pod. No one was really ready for it, no matter how many hours you put into training. The way the pod shook as it fought against the onslaught of the air currents, the speeds at which you fell with no knowing if your parachute system would slow you down enough to land. Of course, even if the parachute system didn't help, the pods were made to protect the person inside in case of a crashing impact to the surface. Any outcome was a mystery and could rock any soldier's nerves as they raced towards Delta-67's worldly surface.
Halcyon could see out of the drop pod's frontal windows, his fellow soldiers falling at different altitudes and speeds all around him. He wondered if their stomach's felt as if they were racing up to meet with his heart or if it was just his own reaction to the drop. However, he knew his thoughts were nothing more than something to occupy the nervous dark thoughts that came with being a soldier, seconds from being dropped within the heart of a battlefield no one wanted to be in.
His eyes shifted around the interior of his pod, taking note of where his military issued, elemental plasma rifle (EPR for short) was. A weapon created by the military scientists to combat any alien weaponry with the use of different plasma cartridges, easily swapped out if needed. Of course, that didn't mean they had fully replaced the typical weaponry. His pistol was already within it's holster upon his hip, a quick grab if one needed it upon exiting their drop pod in the heat of battle.
After spotting the plasma rifle, Halcyon shifted his attention to the door ejection buttons so he knew how to escape the pod he was sitting in. He did not want to be a sitting duck, stuck inside a tiny little pod as enemy soldiers raced towards him. He wanted to be able to get out and get the job done without issue, hoping for a win for the human race.
Halcyon had barely managed to look back out the window in front of him when his pod made a sudden crash landing onto the ground, sending his stomach rushing back to where it belonged. It took everything within Halcyon to not be sick right then and there. The helmet he wore wouldn't have allowed him to do so, a visor face shield protecting him from anything that may come flying directly at his face. In turn, it would have stopped anything that may have come out of him, which would not have been pleasant at all and would force him to remove the helmet that gave him some protection.
As the smoke cleared, gunfire and hand-to-hand combat on both sides could be seen. Both human and alien soldiers either stood and fought against one another or lay dead where they had been shot down. The overwhelming sights before him and the scent of death that lingered around every turn, it made it seem as if time had suddenly slowed down to nothing more than a simple crawl. It reminded Halcyon of just how fragile life really was, but it also reminded him of just how lethal the enemy could be. How easily the human race could be killed off and exactly what they were fighting for.
As Halcyon reached out, grabbing hold of the EPR and readied his finger on the trigger. With a deep breath, he slammed his fist down upon the door ejector button, watching as the door flew off the airlock hinges and crashed down to the ground. It clanged and banged against any nearby debris, but it was gone unnoticed as the gunfire and screaming of orders overwhelmed it.
When freedom from the pod was allowed, Halcyon stood up from his seat and stepped out. His armor that he wore as protection was made out of both a titanium and ceramic compound, showing no signs that it would slow him down despite the weight of it. As terrified as he was, now on the front lines of the battle, he never gave a second thought to raising his weapon. He flicked off the safety and aimed at the first alien enemy that came within his sights and fired the weapon. He rushed into the battle, joining his fellow comrades in the fight for their mother Earth and the people that resided on her surface. His mind was clear with his set goal at the forefront. As he tucked away any straying emotions he allowed faith and instinct guide him towards whatever outcome the war may send him to.
