Chapter XIX- Night Changes
Rony and Nusrat Borabora were a middle-class couple. Rony worked as a Manager at a Factory, while Nusrat was a homemaker who would bake cakes for birthdays in their tiny town. They live in a small town in Arunachal Pradesh. They had three children. 2 girls. They had their first-born, Jannat, 2 years into their marriage. And their second child, Noor, 3 years later.
They lived in a small town which was 2 hours away from the city. It wasn't a developed town, neither was it an under-developed one. The town they lived in had a small population. It was rare to find apartments here. Everyone had a one-floor house or more. The houses did have quite some distance between them, with most of them having gardens in their backyard in the neighborhood.
Rony and Nusrat Borabora had a small 2 floors house with a small garden. They lived with their daughters on the ground floor while planning to pay guests for the upper floor.
They had 3 Bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen with a tiny dining table for 6. A common bathroom was in between 2 rooms, which lay opposite to each other, while the guest room was next to the master bedroom.
Nusrat walked inside her daughters' bedroom to wake her older child.
Jannat smiled, snuggling more with her pillows while trying to avoid the sun Rays falling on her passing through the transparent windows while she could hear the sound of her mother's bangles.
"Mum, please don't push the curtain aside. Please, I am sleepy," Jannat mumbled, her voice sleepy.
"How long do you plan on sleeping?" Questioned Jannat's mother, Nusrat, while taking the blinds off the Window.
Squinting her eyes, Jannat snuggled more into her pillows, trying to escape the sun rays falling on her.
"I don't know, maybe until 8 AM. " Jannat answered groggily.
" It is already 8: 20 AM. Wake up, Miss. Borabora" Jannat heard the voice of her sister before she felt someone slip underneath the covers.
" What?" Jannat shrieked and sat up abruptly with her hair like a bird's nest.
"Yes!"
She turned towards her sister and then towards the tiny clock on the wall adjacent to her.
It was indeed 8:20 PM. Jannat had to be there on time for her first day of work, and here, she woke up late. Jannat immediately rushed inside her tiny bathroom next which was part of her tiny bedroom.
Jannat and her sister Noor shared a room as their grandparents take the guest room.
Jannat wore a white crisp shirt and a blue skirt that reached her knees. Jannat started collecting the things required for her work while her mother fed her breakfast while she rushed from one place to another.
Muttering bye to everyone, Jannat walked out of her house hastily.
Jannat woke up to the sound of her alarm ringing. She swiftly switched it off as she didn't want to wake her daughters up. She got up from the worn-out mattress they slept on. Not that she wasn't appreciative for it, but she perceived her daughters deserved better.
Brushing her hair strands aside from her face, she went inside their tiny bathroom, which had fungus on the edges of the floor. Taking her brush from the tiny shelf next to the washbasin, she looked at the broken mirror on the wall. It was the perfect depiction of her. Inside and outside, truly broken she is.
Smiling painfully, Jannat brushed her teeth and bathed quietly. Coming out of the bathroom, she was dressed in one of her two pairs of clothes and the previous outfit washed, ready to be changed to dry.
Jannat slowly walked towards the tiny balcony attached to their small bedroom.
Jannat slowly hung the clothes on the yellow hanging rope she had hooked from one corner of their balcony to another corner, which was just 5 feet away. Hanging the clothes, Jannat took in the first sunrays of the day.
Shutting the balcony door slowly trying not to wake her kids, she went inside their tiny kitchen. Placing the small utensil on the tiny kitchen slab, she poured milk from the small milk packet she bought last night, hoping it won't be spoiled.
Heating the milk for her daughters, she started preparing food for the day. Chopping the carrots, she turned off the gas and put a plate on the milk heating utensil to keep it warm.
After an hour, she was done cooking food; Carrot fry with 6 Rotis. She cleaned her house too.
Her daughters were inside the bathroom, brushing their teeth. Watching her kids quarrel and play while brushing, she couldn't help but remember they are growing up fast. And, they need to be in school right now, like other kids.
Jannat needed to figure out a way to earn money to send her children to school.
Once her kids were done bathing, they sat down on the mat laying on the floor. Jannat placed 2 Rotis on each plate, for her daughter along with the curry.
They ate silently, just like any other day without troubling their mother. Jannat knew why they never asked for any Junk food or tasty food like she did as a child. It was because they never ate any Junk food, And the reason being her not being able to provide them with it.
Jannat could feel her heartache at the thought of it. Gulping down the food, she pushed back the tears that formed in her eyes, watching her kids.
Cleaning the Utensils, and wearing her Uniform, Jannat instructed her kids, just like every day.
"Drink your milk and have your biscuits for lunch, and 1 roti each for lunch."
And then, Jannat locked the door and left for her work.
Running towards the Entrance, Jannat saw four silhouettes, and she knew. They were her teammates and the newly recruited Interns. Riya, Preetha, Rishsi, and Neel.
"I'm sorry. Really sorry for being late. " Jannat apologized, guilty for making them wait.
"It's okay, Let's go! We are already late" said Rishi, the cute guy with thick-framed glasses.
Rishi had a unique styling quotient. He was way too good for an Intern. If they were meant to choose a Team Leader, the four of them would collectively choose Rishi for it.
Nodding her head, Jannat rushed inside the Conference room to meet the New Investor.
And, that's how Jannat met the Devil in her nightmares.
Vatsalya got out of his car and moved towards The Basu Events Main Office. And this time the reason being someone, not his friend, Imogen. He knew about the Rumors people made about him and Imogen, but Vatsalya and Imogen knew better than anyone that it wasn't true.
Only if his brother knew that it was just a rumor and nothing more. Vatsalya walked inside as the Glass Doors moved inside the block of space in the walls at the Entrance.
Reaching the receptionist,
"Excuse me, could you tell me where I can find Ms.Borabora?" requested Vatsalya politely.
The receptionist is turned toward him with an uninterested look but it didn't even take a second for it to change to astonished.
"Hello, Sir! It is a pleasure to see you here!" She stood up and put her hand forward.
"It is nice meeting you too-Rathi" Vatsalya shook her hand taking a second to read her nameplate.
"Sir, Ms.Bhansali is unavailable today! " The receptionist spoke immediately.
"No, I'm not here to meet Imogen" Spoke Vatsalya gently, understanding why she must have assumed so.
"Sir, if you don't mind, Can I ask you a question?" The receptionist asked him hesitating.
"Yes, Rathi!" Vatsalya spoke softly.
"Are you- um dating Ms.Bhansali? I mean, the two you spend a lot of time together and look so perfect together. It's like a fairytale" The receptionist gushed trying to defend her question and not offend him.
Before Vatsalya could answer, They heard the sound of smashing.
Turning around, Vatsalya saw her. The Angel in his Nightmares.
"Jannat!" She heard the voice of her Boss's Assistant.
Smiling Jannat, went inside the Cabin as she was waiting for it.
It's been 3 months since Jannat started working for the Design House. 2 Months since she started dating Vatsalya. And, since he entered her life everything was going great.
"Good Evening, Mr. Rao" greeted Jannat, smiling.
"Please" Mr.Rao signaled her to sit down.
"Ms.Borabora, it has been three months since you started working here. And, with the development you showed, it would be great to have you work on the next project. "
Jannat couldn't stop smiling hearing Mr.Roa. It was Jannat's dream project. From the moment she heard of this new project, all she dreamt, was to be able to work on this project.
Thanking Mr. Rao, Jannat walked out of the Cabin and squealed. Realizing, he could hear her, she shut her mouth and took the phone out of her pocket.
Jannat texted her boyfriend about the project and waited for the clock to hit 5 PM so that she could immediately rush to her boyfriend's penthouse.
"Is this the type of work you do, Ms.Jannat!?" yelled Ms. Maria, glaring at Jannat.
"No, Ma'am. I didn't spill the wine intentionally." Jannat spoke softly.
Ms. Maria was a middle-aged head waitress, who was very particular about the things for the Events they worked as Waitress. But unfortunately, Jannat was almost on the verge of getting fired.
"No excuses. I do not tolerate such behavior. This is against Work ethics. " Ms.Maria Grimaced.
Jannat didn't want to get fired. Even though she knows that breaking 4 Expensive Bottles isn't forgivable. The Cost of those Bottles is more than her Yearly Salary. Knowing it was her mistake and feeling ashamed, Jannat lowered her eyes.
To begin with, she broke a bottle, it was the Birthday Party of the Twins. In addition to that, she broke another bottle at The Basu Events House, when she saw Imogen and Vatsalya together. Furthermore, she broke another bottle while remembering the degrading words, she has to hear every day. And lastly, she broke a bottle when she heard him call out her name. She didn't expect him to recognize her.
Jannat didn't expect him to remember one of his many conquests. But she was surprised.
"Jannat, I have a suggestion for you!" said Ms.Maria with a sickeningly sweet smile on her face.
"Yes, Ma'am! Please do let me know" Said Jannat anxiously. Ms.Maria's smile was indicating something bad. And all she hoped for, was to not be fired.
"You can go back to daydreaming after packing your things," Ms. Maria said, the smile planted on her face no longer there, but a glare directed towards Jannat.
"You are FIRED!" yelled Ms.Maria, on top of her voice. and hence, it happened. Something Jannat was hoping wouldn't happen the most.
Jannat felt her whole world collapsing. She was again back to where she started. No job. Just her and her two Miracles.
Walking back home, Jannat stopped near her neighbor's house. She met her neighbor's five-year-old daughter.
"My cute little babe! How are you" gushed Jannat, holding Jannat up in her arms.
The little girl first startled at someone mobbing her instantly relaxed after recognizing her friend.
"Jannu didi! I mwissed wu!" the little girl exclaimed her cheeks puffed.
[Jannu didi! I missed you!]
Jannat couldn't help but squeal and kiss her chubby cheeks.
"Chibbu! Chibbu! Where are you?"
Jannat and the little girl, chibbu turned around to watch her mother come outside.
Jannat walked towards Chibbu's mother, smiling.
"Jannat, How are you?" spoke Chibbu's mom, happy to see her after long time.
"I'm good Aunty! How are you?" Jannat spoke, happily.
"I'm good too. But I have to say I'm so proud of you! You are working so hard and Achieving things. I wish Chbbu will also turn out like you when she grows up! "
"Will you chibbu? " Chibbu's mom questioned her daughter who was watching their exchange curiously.
"Ves! I chwill!" Chibbu replied excitedly. [Yes, I will]
Walking back home, Jannat could hear people gossip about her.
She remembers all the words she hears, every day.
Bitch
Whore
Prostitute
And all those guys who ask her to spend some time with her, disgusts her, Climbing up the stairs of the small building in the colony they live in, Jannat needed to find a place to make a new start with her kids. A place where they wouldn't be judged and her kids won't be discriminated against.
Maybe she should leave with her husband. That would be for the best!
Jannat thought over it.
and the nest words, she heard validated her thoughts and broke her heart like always.
"Laya, Do you see that woman? You should never be like her. She is very cheap and disgusting. You should listen to mum to not become a dirty person, like her"
The woman pointed out Jannat and her daughter nodded listening to her mother.
Jannat couldn't help but wonder how fast the Night Changes.
