Chapter XII- Over Again
Jannat didn't understand what she must do to pay the bills and most importatly the rent.
She didn't even have any money, other then two thousand rupees she saved. Her previous job as a waitress had gone down the drain after her perverted boss tried raping her. She doesn't even want to remember his words.
She isn't everything many people accused her. She isn't everything he called her or maybe she is.
Back before her kids were born, she could work two shifts. But now, she has to take care of them. She considers herself lucky to have her neighbor back then. The old lady, Savitri, was a kind and understanding lady.
When the people living in the society looked at her as a cheap whore, a prostitute, Savitri was the only one who never judged her for being pregnant and unmarried.
She helped her out when there was not one person who stood by her. Not even her family. She understood her parents. She was all they had. She understood that they didn't want to do anything with someone who got pregnant before getting married.
Savitri doesn't live there anymore. Her daughter,Mrs.Sharma took her back to their village as she reached an age where she deserves to be taken care like she is a baby. Jannat felt Savitri is lucky to have a daughter like Mrs.Sharma.
While her parents are unlucky for having a daughter like her,her siblings for having a sister like her.
But she didn't want her daughters to be unlucky for having a mother like her, but now she felt like her worst nightmare was coming true.
She thrived to earn money to take care of her daughters basic needs, but she can't even take proper care of them. She can't even fill their empty stomachs at times.
Turning the gas down, she used a piece of cloth to cover her fingers and hold the burning vessel which had the leftover milk she boiled for her kids.
She has been saving this one packet of milk for a week now, giving her daughters a tiny glass of milk each.
It was around time Dua and Dharini woke up. Usually Jannat would have rushed here and there taking care of them, cleaning their tiny house. Even if they didn't have a lot of furniture, she wanted to keep their house clean. They didn't even have a chair. She was lucky enough to have a phone, not that she could afford it. It was Savitri who gave her that phone as a gift to keep in touch even after she left. Savitri calls her after it has been so long to check on her and the twins.
All Jannat had in their house was two mats, one in their living room and the other in their tiny bedroom which sometimes had water leaking down the walls because of the poor condition of the house they lived in.
They had few plates and spoons along with few containers and most of them were given by Savitri.
"I can't take them all the way back to my village,Dear. Keep them. It isn't going to be of any use to give them away."
Those were the words of Savitri, even though Jannat strongly refused to take them,Savitri finally convinced her to at least take her kitchen items, when Savitri offered almost all the items in her house.
Saying that Jannat wasn't tempted to take her things would be a lie. After all she wanted to provide her kids a nice bed to sleep on,A T.V for their entertainment. But, She knew better then to do that.
Waking her kids, she made sure they drank down the last bit of milk in their respective steel glasses. Cooking rice, she made a potato curry as the side dish for them to eat.
After all that was their brunch, yes it was brunch. They could rarely have breakfasts. And like the other kids in their society, she can't afford to make them different breakfasts everyday.
Swallowing down the lump in her throat and fighting the tears in her eyes, she placed the food on the tiny table they had in their kitchen.
She ordered Dua and Dharini to eat their food. She placed a box with few biscuits not the ones with cream filled as she couldn't afford them next to their brunch. Those biscuits were their snacks. As she didn't know when she would return from her job hunting.
"Dua! Dharini!" Jannat called her kids softly catching their attention while they were playing with each other.
Both of them turned to gaze at her. Those eyes, so innocent and pure yet they still hurt her every time she looks at them. After all, they still were half him.
"Yes,amma!" They replied in unison.
"Both you should take care of each other and eat your brunch. I made potato curry and rice and placed the curd container next to them on the table. And don't forget to eat your snacks when you are hungry. And don't forget to ask before you unlock the door. And don't even think of unlocking the door using the keys just so that you guys could play outside." Jannt spoke, first, she spoke softly reminding them to have their food but later glared at them remembering the times they unlocked the door to rush out and play.
She shouldn't leave a spare key with them but she couldn't help but.wonder if they ever need to get out due to Emergencies.
All this time,Dua and Dharini stared at their mother nodding as if they were saints.
Kissing their foreheads, she hugged them gently and walked out of their house.
Shutting the door, she locked it hoping that her kids wouldn't unlock it through their window next to their door.
Walking out of their society, she waited for the bus at the bus stop.
The sun was glaring brightly. She took the ends of her blue duppata, she swiped the beads of sweat on her forehead.
Jannat had two sets of clothes. She wore a pale blue kurti and a white legging along with the duppata.
She waited patiently at the bus stop.
Reaching the destination,Jannat walked inside the place owned by one of the best event planning organizations,The Basu Planners. It was a huge building with few tiny building joining it.
Walking towards the main building, Jannat saw a bunch of people walking here and there. Many of them seem immersed in their work. It was a busy place. After all, they were best Event Planning Company in India.
If she could get a job here, she would be able to give her daughters a better life. This was a big company,so they would have more profits and if she put in her best interests and worked, she would probably earn money better then what he earned at that restaurant.
Taking a deep breath,Jannat pushed the glass doors inside and entered hoping to earn money enough to give her daughters a better life.
It's been weeks since she started working at The Basu Planners, she had to do the labour work for the events organized and later she would work as a waitress in the event organizer by The Basu Planners.
"Jannat! What are you dreaming? Are you dreaming about one of the RJM Brothers?" Reena asked her.
Reena was also from a poor background like her. She was one of the waitresses here. She didn't work as the labour too like her. She was twenty year old student working to pay her monthly expenses.
She was a kind girl.
'Why would she think I would even dream about marrying one of them?'
"Nope. Why would I? Did you forget that I am married?" Jannat said showing Reena her the yellow thread around her neck. Jannat wasn't lucky enough to afford to have a gold necklace tied around her neck.
"Just because you are married doesn't mean you shouldn't dream about somebody else. I heard they are very talented." Reena said dreamily.
Jannat chuckled at her behavior. She wasn't offended by her words. It was true. She fell in love with one of them.
"You aren't going to change. Are you?" Jannat said nudging Reena to get back to cleaning the table in the garden of the RJM Mansion.
Yes, Jannat ended up in the place she avoided all this time. She ended up near the man who used her for his pleasure.
They were here to work as waitress for the kids of the oldest RJM Brothers. That's what she has been told by Reena.
Jannat stared at the Man standing infront of her. She didn't know what he was trying to say.
"Jannat,You should try and understand. I can't always be with you. And just because you saw that magazine filled with rumors that the oldest of the RJM Brothers is to be married, doesn't mean I am,does it?" Vatsalya tried giving her valid reasons.
Jannat didn't understand what to say or think. She felt like the end of their live story in near.
"So, you wouldn't be forced to marry any girl, would you?" Jannat spoke clutching the hem on her t-shirt.
"What do you mean by being forced? What do you take my family for? You think they are going to force their child into marrying someone he diesnt love and ruin his life? Is that what you think of my family?" Vatsalya yelled at her holding her arm tightly with his eyes blazing in anger.
Vatsalya hated when people said something against his family. All this time he spent with Jannat,he never thought she would think so low about his family.
Jannat didn't want him misunderstand. She didn't mean it like that.
She opened her mouth to explain but she couldn't even bring herself to say anything.
"Why are you gaping like a fish? You dont have anything to say. Did cat get your tongue? My parents aren't like your middle class parents, who would force their child into marrying some stranger just for their so called pride" Vatsalya said his voice deadly silent which was enough for her to hear.
All she could do was stare into those eyes that had nothing but anger radiating towards her. She felt like she was being stabbed and her body pierced with a driller. She didn't want them to end up like this.
Leaving her arm,Vatsalya turned towards the other side of the room facing the window. He stood there, frustrated about everything that has been happening.
Jannat didn't know what to say anymore. She knew that many middle class families did that to their kids, but how could he say something like that about her parents. Her parents never forced her to do something according to their likes.
They understood the importance of love, after all they were once the rebellious couple of their family who eloped and married.
Vatsalya knew it. He knew all about her family yet he insulted her parents. She didn't care about the bruise forming on her right arm, she didn't even know what to do anymore.
She slowly walked inside the bathroom.
Turning the tap on,she placed her trembling hands under the tap to collect some water but she could barely do that.
She didn't understand who is this Vatsalya, she didn't know him anymore. He was always calm and understanding.
And there, she broke down. She couldn't control her emotions anymore. She didn't know what to do anymore.
All she could do was let her fears take over her. She couldn't think straight.
She sat there on the tiles of his bathroom, crying for everything. Everything that has been happening to them, to her,to him.
Hearing her sobs,Vatsalya immediately rushed towards her. Watching her laying on their bathroom floor,Vatsalya took her in his arms and brought her back into their bedroom.
Jannat was still sobbing. She was still scared.
"Hello Ma'am, where are you? What are you dreaming about?" Reena asked her, waving her hands infront of her face.
It bought Jannat back here away from those haunting memories.
"Ye-a-ah, I a-am o-oka-a-y" Jannat stuttered turning away from Reena and blinking back the tears in her eyes.
"Jannat! I am sorry. I didn't mean to tease you. I understand you must love your husband and all that. It isn't like you should be interested in those rich people. Please forgive me." Reena said worried and guilty. Reena felt that Jannat must be sad because she kept on teasing her that she might end up liking someone when she is already taken.
Jannat controlled her emotions and turned around to face Reena only to find her sad face. She understood Reena's feelings. She must be sad. But Reena was right all along. She did have feelings for a certain person. She was still in love with that man.
Before Jannat could say something, she heard their boss calling her.
"Jannat! Jannat!" She heard Ms.Bhansali's voice loud.
'She must be searching for me.' Jannat thought.
Nodding at Reena, she immediately moved towards the side from where she heard the loud voice.
Imogen Bhansali was one of the top event planners working in Basu Planners. Rumor has it,that Imogen is very close, way to close to him.
'Why is he so close to her? Isn't he supposed to be loyal to her,his wife? He shouldn't do that to her?' Jannat wondered walking towards Imogen.
Imogen was talking to one of the crew members. Imogen was not only good at planning and organizing events, she had a good choice when it comes to clothes.
'Imogen Bhansali. Successful and Beautiful. Kind and Courageous. She has a beautiful smile and also has a very good choice in picking outfits. No wonder they are close. Even if they are close it has nothing to do with me.' Jannat thought walking towards Imogen.
Imogen smiled at her when she noticed her walking towards her. Imogen liked Jannat. She was a kind and hardworking women. She liked her. Her almond eyes and porcelain skin added an international look to her.
Walking upto Imogen,Jannat smiled and spoke gently.
"Ma'am, I heard you call out for me. What is it that I need to assist you with?"
Imogen gave her the instructions about the technical issue, she needs to look after.
But before Jannat could walk away,Imogen spoke.
"Jannat! I need your help." Imogen spoke hurriedly with nervousness in her voice.
After helping Imogen,Jannat continued with her work. She was walking towards the entrance of the mansion and the only thing she prayed for is not meet him or see him. It has been years since she last saw him. Years since he left her for someone else. Years since she lost her life but got two lives.
'Why do you care Jannat? It isn't like he will remember you. You are nothing to him. He wouldn't even remember you. So why waste your time on him. Why?' Jannat told herself. Even though it breaks her heart that he won't even remember her. And that her kids will never have their real father. She knew and she understood that some lives are meant to be like that.
Something she saw made Jannat freeze in her tracks. There he stood, in all his glory talking to Imogen. He changed a lot since the last time she saw him. He was more rugged and mature. He looked very beautiful. Even after all he did she could still not stop loving him. After all, she still wakes up every day to those eyes and she still sleeps after looking at those eyes everyday in her daughters.
'It must be true then. They seem close. Way to close.' Jannat thought watching them laugh and giggle at each other. They seemed so happy with each other.
And slowly they drifted away from her view as they walked inside the mansion with her hand around his arm holding him gently yet firmly.
And Jannat understood that she was not even in his memories. While she couldn't even stop loving him, he was happy. She accepted it. It is her fate to live with an unrequited love and two Angels.
And even if this would be their ending she would choose him again and again, all over again. After all, she has two Angels because of him.
"She would choose him all over again and Over Again" she whispered gently against the silent winds when a lone tear streamed down her cheek.
She smiled painfully.
