36. Sweet poison

[Caution: don't read this chapter while eating.]
"Are you hungry?" Taehyung's voice brought him back to life.
"Huh? Oh, no," Jungkook muttered, almost panicking.
There he stood, hands behind his back as always, dressed up neatly without a single crease on his shirt, hair swept back and eyes firm.
"What happened? Your stomach is grumbling but you do not want to eat?"
"What? When did it..?" his voice was small, flustered even.
"I have strong auditory senses," he smiled, "hello! Breaking news! Kim Taehyung is still a vampire." he finished off with a dramatic ending.
Jungkook rolled his eyes, sighing. He will never change. He stood up from the bed, feeling strangely fresh and new, thanking all the gods he knew for making the previous night a dream only.
"Let us get you something to eat, you have yet to spend another day with that fake one." he walked back to his chair, pretending to sound tired but didn't take a seat.
"Oh really?" Jungkook scoffed, "you didn't really think that I couldn't recognise the real you, did you?"
Taehyung turned around, kind of surprised, his eyes glimmering with extra shine.
"There it is!" he exclaimed, smiling.
"Would you care to elaborate, sweetheart?" he was now suddenly feeling better. Jungkook was behaving better than he had expected and he was loving it. He didn't like being hated by him.
"Your eyes. They shine like shooting stars, as if a meteor shower in the vast night sky. You looked like you don't care but why did your eyes do that thing when I touched your face the other day? You make it very obvious, Tae."
Taehyung gulped. He would be lying if he said that his words didn't do something to him. Did Jungkook pay that much attention to him?
"That fake doppelganger or whoever is it, his eyes never shone like yours. I might be crazy to say this out aloud but your eyes are the prettiest I've ever seen."
"Not a word more, Jungkook."
"Why? Scared now, aren't you, sweetheart?"
That was it. Taehyung let his cover go and his lips curved up, forming a smile so gentle, clearly contradicting with his image.
"Mocking me now?" his smile didn't falter at all as he spoke with care but Jungkook just shrugged.
"Well, I would not lie, I am impressed." Taehyung nodded, snapping his fingers for the food to appear.
"Eat up, the game will resume soon."

"What?" he laughed, nervous sweat beads forming on his forehead.
"You were wrong, I can easily recognise who the real one is. So, if you might, please show your real self?" Jungkook spoke, words stern.
The doppelganger had no choice but to surrender.
"You dumbass! I was trying to help you but you had to slide with him." his words rang a bell.
It must be none other than Jiwoong! But, how was he trying to help?
Before any of them could speak further, Jiwoong was already out of their sight.
"I will personally see him." Taehyung was the first one to speak.
"You knew that he was Jiwoong?" Jungkook asked.
"Nothing can be a secret for long. You may continue with the game, go and meet your friends." he didn't waste much time, stating things straightforward and quickly vanished as well.
"No, hey!! Don't go looking for Jiwoong. Don't waste your time on him. I'll just get this game over soon." Jungkook yelled, even though Taehyung wasn't there, Jungkook knew that he could hear him.
"Why?" a voice whispered in his head.
"Just don't... it's a waste of time."
The fact was, he didn't knew it himself. Why was he doing this? He had nothing to do with Jiwoong! Was he really expecting him to help him stay? But what had done couldn't be altered now.
"As you wish," the voice whispered again and Jungkook finally started walking.
He knew where to find his friends.
The scenery remained unchanged, with no signs of any danger in sight, he made his way to the mansion they mentioned before.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" he shouted from outside, standing in front of the door.
It was massive, but there was no doorbell in sight. Was he supposed to knock, like in old movies?
He knocked twice, waiting for someone to open the door.
"Hey, it's Jk," Hobi opened the door, welcoming him with a bright smile.
"Hyung," he smiled as well, feeling happy to see him.
"Get inside, we've been waiting for you."
"You knew I was coming?" they entered the living room, the luxurious decor surprising Jungkook.
"Someone sent us a message beforehand," he made him sit down on a chair at the dinning table.
A tall chandelier hung above his head on the high ceiling, dim lights shining down on him. He glanced around the room, feeling unfamiliar.
"Jin hyung!! Jk is here, everybody, come down." he yelled at the top of his lungs, calling everyone.
"Hey yo!" Jimin jumped down the stairs, greeting him and took a seat beside him.
"Hi," he replied shortly.
"You guys seem to be pretty comfortable here." Jungkook said, feeling strange.
Just some days, if not months, ago they were trying to find a way to get out of this trouble and now suddenly they're living here happily? He just couldn't digest it, no matter what.
"Um, we don't have anything to worry about here, so yeah!" Yoongi said as soon as he heard their conversation.
"But, we have to go back, remember?" Jungkook reminded them, worried.
"It's not necessary," Hobi sat down too, putting a tray of food on the table.
Jungkook's gaze fell on the dish, his brows farrowing.
"Uh, guys, what is this dish? It's a bit... too raw?" his stomach was churning and he felt a weird urge to stand up and get away from that thing.
"Oh, you'll get used to it soon, just as we did. It's not raw, just has a different blood in it."
"What do you mean by different? I get it that it's meat but-"
"Human blood," Yoongi cut him off, straightforward as always.
"What the fuck?! Are you... eating human flesh?!" he stood up at once, a nauseous feeling stirring in the pit of his stomach.
"No way, it's not human flesh, just the blood, you know?" Jin shrugged.
"Jin hyung, you too?!" he turned to him, "and how do you know that it's only human blood and not flesh as well? Where do you get this from?" he was getting frantic.
"Chill dude!"
"Dude? Chill? Shut your mouth Jimin, no matter how much shit you utter on other days I can tolerate it but, this thing is not tolerable. And leave about the flesh part? Is it even normal to consume human blood?! You guys are insane!!" he shook his head, stepping back from the table.
Just the sight of the dish was making him want other throw up.
"Because Jin hyung needs it," Hobi said, the silence returning in the room.
"What?" Jungkook looked at Jin.
"He's like that because of those vampires, he's one of them now and he needs this shit to survive."
"No? He doesn't? They can still survive on animal blood, hyung!"
"He's too weak right now, so he does,"
"Okay, he does but, why are you guys doing this too?" he looked at everyone, trying to get a normal reaction out of them but they all remained nonchalant.
"Well, there's no reason, we just like it." Jimin shrugged, chiming in.
"You like it?" there was pure disbelief in Jungkook's eyes and he couldn't help but laugh at Jimin's words. He made sure that it sounded sarcastic though!
They like human blood now?! What type of ridiculous strategy this was?!
"Come on, Kook! It's not that serious, we're going to stay here for a long time anyway, so might as well just get used to it, right?"
"Shut the fuck up!! You all," he stepped back even more, eyes wide with shock as he pointed his finger at them, "are going insane here."
"We are not, Jk. It's much better than struggling in the city." Jimin was still adamant about it.
"Oh god! Damn, you-"
"They are right, son, let us stay here."
Everybody stopped at once and turned to look at the person who just disrupted their conversation.
"Dad?!" Jungkook couldn't believe his eyes. His father was standing right in front of him. Was it even true?!
Probably not! He quickly steadied himself, trying his best to stay sane. There was no way he could be there.
"Yes, son. It's been so long." he smiled, the same as before. Jungkook remembered it so well, as if it were printed in his brain. It was the same!
"I'm disappointed though! I thought you'd come back to me soon yet you didn't so I had to come here myself." his father continued while still smiling.
It was creepy enough for Jungkook to have a shiver run down his spine. He felt like he was stuck among fake people, and that they couldn't be real. It was suffocating. Nothing was going his way.
Just when his mind was starting to feel tired, he remembered the words of that old man he met in the woods.
Do not do what your heart tells you to.
Think with your brain and not only the heart.
If he could just figure out how to put an end to this whole situation, he could get out of this, right?
"Why don't you say something, son?" his voice was so sweet, to the point that it was sickening.
"No, I'm not your son- you're not my father."
"What are you saying, Jk?" Yoongi stepped ahead, looking sad.
"Yes, how could you say that? We've met him before already, we were planning to give you a surprise but you're.. ruining it yourself? Why are you behaving like this?" Hobi joined him too.
If all of them started blaming him for all of the things, how could he stay calm and think properly? They promised to get out this mess together, didn't they?
"You've met before? When exactly?" he still asked, expecting rational answers for once.
"Since we started living here, I think?" Jin answered.
Jungkook scoffed at his words, "oh? Are you listening to yourself?" he shook his head in disappointment.
"Son, why are you being like this?"
Even though he knew that all of this was to make him give in and stop trying but still, because they looked exactly the same as his loved ones, he was having a hard time.
It was not easy. How could he bring himself to be rude to his father, who was on a deathbed just a while ago? He had seen him breathing through machines not long ago. It was difficult not to run up to him and hug him, even after knowing that all of this was fake.
What could he possibly do?
"It's alright, let's not get all sour now, shall we? Let's eat something first." his father said, walking up to the dinning table as he sat down, preparing to eat.
The others approached Jungkook, dragging him to sit down forcefully.
What was happening?!
"What are you guys doing?! I don't want to-"
"You have to, Jk. Now, be a good boy and eat up, hm?" Jin's words basically dripped honey. It was a sweet poison.
"I can not! I physically can not, don't you understand?" he tried to break free from the hold but he was alone and all of the others were trying to pin him down on the chair, forcing him to eat the ghastly-looking dish.
"It looks- horrible, I can't even look at it without throwing up-"
"It's not too bad, really!! Try it... here," Jimin picked up a piece from the tray, the reddish brown liquid dripping down the table, staining it but no one bat an eye to it.
"Open your mouth," he didn't stop there, reaching out to hold Jungkook's face.
"Ugh, let me go. Take it away from me!!" he was on the verge of crying angry tears.
He felt helpless and suffocated. It was hard to breathe and the stench coming from that thing wasn't helping at all.
"Fuck, I'll just throw up on you guys," his head was spinning from the constant efforts he was making to avoid being fed something inhumane.
This one was really testing his patience!
