Your POV

Then her face changed.

"Just kidding!"

Those lips that used to sneer at me turned upwards in a big grin. Her voice, lifeless and empty was now brimming with life. Her eyes, once cold turned warm and welcoming. Her cold demeanour changed, and suddenly she was hugging me as if we were best friends.

Suddenly, in front of me was a Mei Hagane who I never knew.

But I hated change, and maybe it was that or the ingrained disgust or fear that lead me to push Mei away. My body moved on its own, getting into a protective stance.

"(y/n), stand down," Gingka quickly spoke up, and I obliged. He then turned to look at his actual granddaughter. "Mei, I know you've changed, but was that really a good way to welcome (y/n)?"

"No," Mei mumbled, kicking a small pebble.

"Idiot," he huffed.

Irk marks appeared and she stuck her tongue out. "Old man, be quiet! I'm surprise you're still alive!"

This was my first time seeing them act like grandfather and granddaughter. It stunned me.

Then she glanced at my face and let out a big, hearty laugh. "Your face! You look so confused!"

"And I have every right to be," I said coldly. "You used to play at being a bully, why change now? This is just part of your stupid little plan to take what I love and make it yours so I can be sad forever. Well, you must be in luck, because your plan already succeeded. By me."

My voice sounded empty and cracked, even to me. "So if you came here just to put your plan in motion, you can go back now. You succeeded."

Mei frowned and tilted her head. "But I haven't succeeded. If I succeeded you wouldn't be lost like this."

"What, are you saying you want to help me?" it was so outrageous I nearly laughed.

She took a deep breath. "Last time we met, you told me to not come back into your life as a demon. I thought long and hard about that. So, this time, I'll hopefully be an angel. (y/n), I heard the whole story. I want to help you."

Now I laughed. "Do you honestly expect me to believe that? When we were little you bullied me, then you took away my boyfriend, then you kidnapped me!"

"Please!" her hands were clenched fists as she bowed down, tears tracing down her face. "Believe me, I really have changed! I want to help you find happiness!"

I continued laughing at her pitiful sight when a nudge from Gingka stopped me. I turned to him, expecting him to back me up, but he only looked at his granddaughter with the saddest eyes I had ever seen on him. "(y/n), I know it's hard. But let it go. Embrace change."

He was crazy, he must be crazy if he wanted to believe that snake. This betrayal stung like hell, and as I shouted tears begin to brim in my eyes too. "How can I when I'm just going to get hurt?"

"Have trust in her, (y/n)," Gingka's eyes were hard. "Do you want to believe that she's still a villain? Do you want her to be? She'll only be one if you believe she is one. Have trust. You don't want to change, but does everyone have to be the same? It's been years since your saw her. Do you expect everyone meet your expectations? If that's so, you really have changed."

That was like a slap in the face.

How have I changed?

Gingka's chin flew up and I've never seen him look so determined. "Yes, you have changed. You've become stronger and more independent, and urge to protect the people you love beyond anything. But the darkness is twisting those changes into something bad, using them to push everyone away. The darkness is what is making you laugh at Mei when she's facing one of the hardest challenges in her life; to admit her wrongdoing. The darkness is what's holding you back from trusting people."

Biting my lip, I turned back to look at the cowering Mei. Did I really expect her to be a villain for the rest of her life? If I did, I'm no better am I? Gingka's gaze softened. "Have trust."

Gingka was right.

He trusted her, and if I trusted his judgement, I would trust her too.

I walked up to her, and, placing a hand on her shoulder, I forced my tears to vanish. I had no right to cry when I was the demon. "Mei, I forgive you. And I-I'm sorry too."

She stood upright again, drying her tears off with a sleeve. "What for?"

Guilt heaved in my chest. "You were the bully, but I did rude things back to you. I labelled you as a 'demon'. And I really did believe you would never change. I'm sorry, I came back to Beigoma hoping that it would be the same, but it isn't. And I just really wanted solace, so I wanted you to meet my expectation of you. I'm sorry."

"Oh, (y/n)," Mei hugged me before letting go and scampering to her grandfather. "Sit here, maybe Ojii-san could teach both of us demons how to be an angel."

Mei, you already are an angel.

I could tell by the way she walked, so floaty with happiness and joy. She seemed almost as if she was levitating across the ground. Compared to me, walking with heavy feet as if being weighed down by the amount of mistakes I made. Nevertheless, I sat down next to her at the feet of Gingka.

It felt like old times, when me and Mei were caught insulting each other and Gingka dragged both of us up to this place to teach us a lesson. Now, we had come willingly.

He observed both of us and placed a hand on each head with a smile. He closed his eyes looking so peaceful, and both of us followed suit. "Embrace change. Life is about learning how to ride the wave."

"But waves can be currents that take you away," I instantly said, it was just instinct.

Besides me, Mei smiled. "Currents take you away to even more beautiful places."

A lump formed in my throat. "Not for me. Currents just take to places where I make more mistakes."

"That's not true."

I felt a hand take one of my own and give it a sisterly squeeze. I opened my eyes to see Mei, amber eyes bright with warmth, staring right back at me with a tender smile.

"That's not true," she repeated. "If change never happened, maybe you would still be back here in Beigoma with the Bey Club, like all these years ago. But then, I think if that happened, your feelings for Shu might've never changed into something beautiful and strong like it is today.

"I think Jiji already said this, but go after Shu. It would be too much of a shame if you two destroyed your relationship. I can't even imagine how unbearable it would be for both of you. When you leave Beigoma, the first thing you need to do is to apologize to him, alright?"

"Okay," I breathed in the twilight air. "But how exactly do I apologize to him? I did so many things wrong."

"Start off with acceptance," Gingka patted my head. "Accept that you did things wrong in the past and there's nothing you can do to change that. Show him that you've already changed."

"Just be honest," Mei suggested. "Honesty can go a long way."

"What if- what if he just pushes me away? What if he doesn't what anything to do with me?"

smack

"Ow," I complained as Gingka and Mei high-fived each other for scoring a double smack.

"That was for being dumb," Mei said, eyes twinkling. "Of course he won't push you away. If he does, well, come back to Beigoma and both Jiji and I will kick his butt."

"I'm not sure you two reuniting was a good thing- Ow! Again? Guys!"

Their laughter was cut short by a voice that rang out across the mountain. "Mei! Come back, it's so late!"

I sharply inhaled. Was that-

"Coming, Ukyo!" Mei yelled back. She smiled at Gingka and I before standing up. "Well, that's my cue to leave. It's late, so you two should probably head back as well."

It was later than I had noticed, the stars were already out and all traces of the previous sunset had vanished. The pale afternoon sky had turned into an inky midnight blue, enveloping all. Mei's smiled brightened as she waved before skipping away.

"Mei, wait!" I called out. She stopped and turned around, a questioning look on her face. "W-Was that Ukyo?"

"Yeah, he's a real protective boyfriend," she laughed and rubbed the back of her head. Then she took a look at my shocked and expression and said, "Well, who else do you think dragged me out of the darkness? The love...it's for real this time."

"That's wonderful," I murmured, secretly jealous of their easy relationship. "Can I ask you to do a favor?"

"Of course."

"Tell the dojo I'm sorry," I lifted my head up and gazed at the night sky, ready for it to engulf me. "I'm sorry for abandoning them, I'm sorry for defeating them, I'm sorry for being a bad friend to Quon and Yugo, and...I'm sorry for being a bad girlfriend to Ukyo."

Mei wrapped her arms around me for the last time. "(y/n), they're just glad that you've grown so much. You should be glad too. I'm off!"

I looked down and she was indeed gone, racing down the mountain to meet Ukyo and the rest of the dojo. Just like I had once done.

"She reminds you of your old self, doesn't she?" I turned back to see Gingka sitting on his chair, closing his eyes and breathing the magical air in. "I'm glad to see you've begun to accept yourself, as well as change."

"I'm grateful for you, Ojii-san," I smiled. "It's late, you should start heading indoors too."

"Nah," he shook his head and smiled, opening his eyes to stare at the endless universe. "I want to talk to my friends for a bit."

I stared at the stars ahead and thought about how lovely it would've been to meet all of his friends if they had not passed away earlier. "Thank you."

"No problem. Just have trust, in both you and everyone else.

Trust is key."

Shu's POV

It was the morning of a new day. As I had done of every other day, I made my way through the forest, weaving through the trees and shrubs.

It was only five o'clock, so the forest was asleep, including BC Sol. Even though it was early, rays of gold had already started to filter through the leaves, dappling the grass. I winced as I emerged at the familiar clearing, sun hitting me at its fullest.

The past few days I had been here the person I had been waiting for still hadn't showed up. But it was okay. I know it'll take time. She's on a healing journey, after all. I know that she will come back, though.

But maybe I doubted her again, because there she was, sitting on the steps with her eyes closed and basking in the sunlight. Maybe I doubted how long it would take for her to heal. Again, she amazed me.

She opened her eyes, and it was like that time all over again. Except, this time she didn't run away. She only smiled tenderly, moving forward towards me with a newfound grace. It felt like she was floating, the tips of her toes barely grazing against the grass.

She took my hands in hers and her smile only grew bigger and more beautiful. She bowed her head down and murmured, "I'm sorry."

I removed one hand from the grip and placed a finger underneath her chin, lifting it up so I could clearly see her eyes. And in one glimpse, I saw what she had been through. I saw the hurt, agony, and hate she had experienced. I saw the love she had felt.

So I breathed back, "You don't need to apologize."

And we stood there, hands in hands as we stood underneath shards of the sun, our eyes closed and just feeling each other's presence. Because, for once, we knew that everything would be alright.
