Chapter 4

I was led through the unfamiliar house, up a staircase, and into what I recognized as Bakugou's room. I peeked out the window and saw into my own room, so I knew I was right. I was dragged onto the floor with Ashido, the rest of the group scattering around the room.

"So then, Midoriya, what's the worst thing you've ever done?" She asked, eager for gossip.

Kirishima let out a breath of air. "Jesus, Mina, straight to the point today."

She turned to him with a frown. "You heard him out there, he had to have done so gnarly shit to be that confident."

"Or he's an idiot and bluffing his way through this," Sero pointed out, a pencil now in his hand.

It was quickly retrieved by Bakugou as he walked past towards his bed. "Stop touching shit." Sero stuck his tongue out at the blond's back but otherwise did as he was told.

"Yeah," I said sarcastically. "I'm the idiot."

Ashido grabbed my arm as she fell forward in laughter. "Oh, I love him. We're keeping him, regardless of this bet."

I gently removed her hand from me. "No, no, no. No one is keeping me. You guys have a month, then I'm back on my own."

"Wow, he's more antisocial than Bakugou," Kaminari pointed out.

I squeezed my eyes shut and sighed in annoyance. "I'm not antisocial, it's just that I made a promise-"

"A promise to make zero friends and be lonely your entire senior year? Sounds like a messed up promise to me," Kirishima said, shrugging his shoulders. "Who did you make this promise to anyway?"

I blinked at him, caught off guard. "My mom, but that's not-"

"Whoa!" Kaminari exclaimed, Sero shaking his head. "You're mom made you promise to have no friends and be lonely your whole senior year? That's so fucked up."

I shook my head quickly. "That is not at all what-"

Ashido nodded in agreement. "That is seriously fucked up. You're mom sounds mean, dude."

"She's not, she's actually great-"

"When do you turn eighteen? You should get out of there fast."

"No! My mom isn't mean-"

"That's gotta be some kind of abuse."

"Shut up!" I yelled, finally getting all of them to stop talking over me. "I promised my mom I would have a quiet year, not that I wouldn't make friends or be lonely the whole time. Fuck. And my mom isn't mean, by the way, she's actually the nicest person I've met." I huffed, leaning back against the wall and letting myself slouch.

The group all seemed to be calculating their next move, in sync. They worked as one organism like they were all cogs that made the whole thing move. It was slightly intimidating, as an outsider. But it also just made me miss my own group that much more. I hated being the outsider, I wanted the safety and familiarity of my friends.

"You promised a quiet year, as opposed to a loud year?" Ashido asked, leaning forward on her palms.

"Yes, Ashido. Those words are antonyms, good job," I muttered sarcastically.

"So, what's a loud year for you, Midoriya?" She asked innocently, batting her eyes at me.

I pushed myself up, readjusting so I wasn't slouching so low. I was about to tell her some bullshit answer that involved a lot of yelling, but then I looked over her shoulder at Bakugou.

He was sitting on his bed, leaning back on his hands. He was trying to look nonchalant like he didn't care about the outcome of the conversation, but the way his eyes were tracking me gave him away. I decided to throw him a bone.

"I promised my mom I would have a quiet year because I'm the reason we had to move across the country in the first place." The way they were all looking at me clearly said to go on. I sighed, annoyed I was spilling my tragic backstory to some strangers. "We had to move because I had been blacklisted from every school in the state, private and public. Happy now?"

The silence in the room was a physical thing. I could feel it, separating them from me. It wasn't the first time I'd experienced it, the most recent being when my mom and I had arrived home after sitting down with my old principal and the cops.

"What the fuck did you do?" Sero asked, sitting at the end of the bed, his elbows on his knees so he could get closer to me.

"Doesn't matter now," I answered.

Bakugou scoffed. "Like I'm gonna believe that. Where's your proof?"

I stared at him, trying to figure out his game. "What? Like a police report or something?"

He shrugged. "Doesn't even have to be that. If it was bad enough to get you blacklisted from every school in your state, there had to be some kind of news coverage, even just a local paper. Those vouchers eat that sort of shit up."

"I was a minor, the deal I made kept my name off the records," I explained with a frown.

"Great excuse, nerd," he said with a cocky smile.

Kaminari placed a hand on my shoulder, pulling uncomfortably close so he could make direct eye contact with me. "I believe you, bro. I believe you."

"Jee," I said awkwardly pushing him away. "Thanks... bro?"

"Anytime, I got your back," he said with a confident nod.

"He fried his brain a little too much over the weekend, don't mind him," Kirishima said, pushing Kaminari away from me, but seeing as the redhead was sitting on the other side of me, he basically had to wrap his arm around my shoulders. I shook off the blush that threatened to form on my cheeks and sent him a questioning look.

"He's our electric fence guy," the redhead explained.

I looked between the two. "Does he have some trick to turn them off or something?"

Sero burst out into a fit of laughter. "No, he's the guy Bakugou throws into the fence to see if it's on."

I dropped my jaw and looked over at the blond. "Dude, that is fucked."

Ashido giggled. "Low voltage fences that are just meant to shock off animals, don't worry. Kaminari's been like this since birth."

I nodded in understanding. "So he's just chronically stupid?" I asked and immediately slapped a hand over my mouth. "I am so sorry, that just came out of my mouth-"

Kaminari was the first to break down into laughter. "Dude, the look on your face!"

Sero shook his head, a smile on his lips. "He doesn't get offended by stupidity jokes because he knows he's not actually stupid. Don't worry about it."

I shifted my gaze back to the blond in question. "I've already got a full ride to like three colleges," said sheepishly.

My eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Why did you want me to do your homework so badly then?"

He scratched the back of his neck. "Those scholarships are all for engineering schools. I'm crazy good at math, but Lit classes have always kicked my ass."

"Seeing as I'm not going to lose this bet, I can tutor you or something," I offered, then added, "If you want."

"Dude!" he exclaimed. "That'd be amazing! I usually go to Bakugou for help, but he can be a little..."

"Explosive?" Ashido quipped.

Kaminari snapped and pointed at her. "Exactly."

"Oh fuck off, sparky!" Bakugou snapped, only proving their point.

My phone vibrated, drawing my attention. It was my mom.

"Fuck," I said, immediately getting to my feet.

"Whoa, what happened?" Kirishima asked, everyone but Bakugou getting to their feet.

"It's my mom. She's freaking out because I'm not home," I explained, grabbing my discarded backpack off the floor. "I gotta go."

"Why is she freaking out?" Kaminari asked.

I just stopped and stared at Kaminari, waiting for him to catch up.

"Oh! Oh, that's not good," he said, sucking air in through his teeth.

"Yeah," I said in annoyance.

"Nerd," Bakugou called, causing me to stop once again. "Be ready at seven forty tomorrow, you're riding with me."

"Why do you get to drive him?" Kirishima complained.

Bakugou rolled his eyes at the boy. "Because my bike is scarier than your truck. That thing is a house on wheels, which is why you'll never be able to beat me, dumbass."

"See ya," I called over my shoulder, not giving either of them a response. That gave me until tomorrow to decide if I truly wanted to go through with this bet. I could leave early and get to school before seven forty even hit.

Before I was down the stairs I heard Bakugou say something along the lines of he knew I wouldn't actually go through with it.

And that was when I decided I was not having a quiet year.

Writing this is literally crack, holy fuck. Idk what day or time it is and I don't think I've had enough to drink to still be able to function, but I can't stop writing this until I know what happens.

I'm free balling this shit boys, every time you gasp, remember that I also gasped bc I didn't see that shit coming either.
