Chapter 28: Small Package, Big Surprises
Final Chapter here we go! I will apologize now, this ending didn't come out as expected but hope you all like it.
There's a reference in here, it's from a cartoon that no longer airs.
Everyone growled at the sight of a grotesque goblin, so ugly yet menacing to all. With skin a ghostly white all stitched together with thread of lemon yellow. His large gaping mouth were home to hundreds of razor sharp shark teeth that stood perfectly aligned. Some of his more notable features were his dark vampirific clothes from the cobweb collar and frilly ruff to the bulbous Mickey Mouse shoes. He tinkered with dead bodies, reanimating them into a perfect army, sulking in the shadows. Nobody in a million years would've thought a monster like him would ever make another appearance. Let alone in front of the Straw Hat Crew, the first bunch to ever bring this grave robber of a villain to his knees.
The goblin like man stood before the crew, still as towering as ever, a stark black shadow flashing two red ruby like eyes in disress gripped in his sharp razor like hands. The shadow, like his other victims, struggled and fought to be released from his grip. The goblin cackled, crushing the shadow ever so tighter more in his hands. A disembodied scream-like whimper left the shadow. "Missed me assholes? Shishishishishi!" The former Warlord howled into the air.
"Moriah..." Luffy and Sanji hissed in unison. They were the most moved by ex warlord Moriah's presence, then again, they were the two most furious with Moriah the last time they've met nearly three years back. For Moriah to steal shadows for a living and tamper with the dead. The hosts of those shadows having to living in the darkness to prevent their demise. Not to forget Nami was almost forced into marriage at the time as well no thanks to him.
It was that realization that finally came across the most wise of women's head that she finally took action. "Shoot!" Robin slaps Sabo in the chest, it caught him more by surprise than Moriah... Which takes a lot to do. The tall woman pulled and pulled on Sabo's sleeve until she managed to get his arm out of the suit jacket just for the blonde to forfeit his jacket all together with a look of bewilderment behind her forceful actions. Robin made quick time and threw his blue jacket over your unconcious frame, making sure no flesh were vulnerable to the sun.
"What?" Sabo muttered, running a gloved hand through his blonde locks.
"If Moriah steals your shadow, you cannot touch the sunlight unless you want to burn to ashes," Sanji answered Sabo well before Robin ever could, all the while rolling up his sleeves and puffing lightly on his cigarette till one end were red with smoldering ashes.
Moriah's small bloodshot eyes surveyed Sanji and Luffy closely like a Pacifista. He can't underestimate this crew, not now, even one wrong assumption could be the end of him. "No need to worry about your lil' girlfriend," Moriah snapped his wrist finally commenting on the situation of your missing shadow. "That damned devil fruit she consumed negates the aftereffects of my shadow stealing abilities... Pretty soon that fruit will be mine, all I need to do is absorb her pretty. Little. Shadow," he raised his hand level to his face. Staring down your shadow. Your shadow grew more restless, trying to escape his clutches ever more than before, all just to avoid consumption.
"What!?" Sanji gasped with clenched teeth and spun in place so very quickly to light his leg aflame. "What the hell are you talking about onion head?"
"Hey that's my nickname for him!" Luffy snapped to his offense rather than focusing on the real problem.
"You haven't pieced it together yet have you?" Moriah snickered, your shadow pressed hands to its ears. "Haven't you realized just how similar mine and (Y/n)'s fruits are? Do you even know that most fruits are just one part of another? The only way you can successfully consume another devil fruit is if that fruit corresponds with the one you already wield," Moriah shows off a wicked grimace, staring in your direction. Luffy was frozen solid, it all reminded him of Teach stealing Whitebeard's devil fruit years back. Darkness and total destruction do correspond.
"(Y/n) has the other half to my devil fruit... I was fired as a warlord to make room for that bitch!" Everyone followed Moriah's dramatic finger point to where you lied. "Doflamingo Bastard was hired by the higher ups to kill me for my devil fruit to feed to her and make her the most dangerous human weapon there ever lived!!!" The release of Moriah's unfortunate and sudden rejection as the seventh warlord of the sea made perfect sense. You were in the comings to become the ultimate human weapon, imagine if you also took on Moriah's devil fruit as well, you'd be unstoppable.
"Then why the hell are you here?" Luffy threw a punch at the monster, Moriah dodged easily just by tilting his head off to the right.
Moriah smiled a great big grimace once again. "I was offered my Warlord position back if I hand her over... You get the gist," oh yeah, they all got the point. It was Kid all over again. The higher ups bribed Kid with his freedom for your capture, he failed, but its the same idea. And boy did it make your family furious.
"Give her shadow back!" Sanji air walked, scaling the air, till he were eye level with Moriah's black. His leg were spitting with flames to be launched upon his ugly face. Sanji took a swing, just for Moriah to tilt his head casually to dodge just like he did with Luffy. Sanji was fuming in his own anger ever more than before.
Sabo and Robin took note of the situation, and gave each other that signature glance of understanding. "Is there any way this ship can go faster?" Sabo piped in, igniting his hand aflame and locked in on the monster.
"Yes!" Robin frantically searched about the deck for their shipwright.
"Just get us to the base, we need the full effort of the army," Sabo backed away, taking a spot beside Luffy who prepared to unleash his rubber fist on the enemy by rolling his shoulders. "Move Sanji!" The brothers called out, unleashing fists of fire in the blonde's direction. Sanji hopped away from Moriah's face just in time for the flames to smother his ugly face. Moriah shrieked batting at his face with both of his hands to extinguish the fire. Your shadow tumbled to the deck after its release and sped past Sanji to return to its host where you slowly risen from what was once a deep slumber as good as death.
Sanji's heart was in the right place, rather than the current threat, he ran over to you within a heartbeat crying out for you. The blonde whipped Sabo's jacket from your body, revealing you to be awakening slowly yet dazed with confusion, hacking up crimson. Sanji couldn't care less though if you were awake or not, sweeping you off your feet and carrying you away from the danger at hand like a bride on her wedding night. You clutched onto his shirt, unable to really help yourself, until he lied you down elsewhere on the opposite ond of the deck.
"Stay here (Y/n)," Sanji demanded of his girlfriend. You highly disapproved, glancing over his shoulder to see what exactly was going on in the fight. What you saw however made your blood run cold like time froze. "We've fought Moriah before, I'm sure we can defeat him again-"
"What about Sakazuki and Kizaru and that anti-gravity guy, maybe even a fleet of hundreds, think you can take them?" Sanji frowned much to his confusion. You growled, cupping his cheeks and made him stare out towards the horizon where a fleet of marine ships were closing in on the Sunny, and quite fast too. "Sabo clearly wasn't joking when he said the Gov found out our position, I need to help! After all... This war is about me."
"Okay... I really can't disagree with you for once," Sanji couldn't find the strength to disagree. "My only problem is your condition. You're coughing up blood-"
"It's only temporary!" You snapped wiping the crimson staining your chin into the back of your arm. "Moriah forced my shadow in its most purest form outta my body, if anything I'm wobbly right now. I can fight," you reassured and stood up effortlessly. The draw backs weren't as great as you once thought.
"I just..."
"What Sanji?" You knew Sanji wasn't happy about you running into battle again, just by the way he spoke, there was something larger on his mind.
"Judging by the situation at hand... We're highly unlikely to live through this," so that's his problem... "I'm sorry but the conditions are just too similar to that war where Ace and Whitebeard passed on. Luffy just barely got out of that alive-"
"That was a war even the Revolutionary Army wanted to avoid and we're literally bringing the war to them," now you understood his concern entirely. Who wouldn't? This was a life and death situation in its finest. It could even determine the fate of the world now, if you're captured, it'll end the pirate age. If not well... That's something that cannot be assumed for now.
"I got an idea, and you're not going to like it... Nobody will."
"You're gonna go full beast again aren't you?" You were surprised to say the least that Sanji had most precisely read your mind. "It's not a bad idea, but it's very risky (Y/n)..."
"How so?"
"You attack anything that moves, you're also overpowered which is an upside," Sanji began to list the pros and cons, keeping an eye on the fight as well. Sabo seemed to be having a good time throwing balls of fire at Moriah and have the monster dance around like he were walking on coals. "The only thing I gotta ask you (Y/n), can you control your shadow form any better than last time?"
"I mean I've been working on it with Sabo and Kid-"
"But can you control yourself instead of running into the fight like a headless chicken?" Such a valid question. "If you fall into the sea during your rampage, only Franky can save you. He's the only one who can see in the water when you revert back to normal."
"Just let me fight Sanji! I couldn't care less if I die or not, as long as you and the crew survive I'm fine with-" Sanji cut you off with his lips. This wasnt a first, but this time... This time you had to embrace his love. Just melting into his kiss of pure emotions and warmth. You never thought you'd see the day when Sanji would say goodbye without ever actually saying it.
Track of time was lost, although your body said it was time to part. Your hand pushed gently on his chest, Sanji breathed heavily like a sigh up on breaking the kiss. "Sanji..." You hummed, running a hand through his hair. "Although I can't promise anything... I'll try my hardest to win this fight for us."
Sanji caught you by the hand, holding it dearly to his cheek. "I don't care what happens, just don't get yourself caught."
"No promises," you grinned and ran off within the second to the front of the Sunny. No sense in saying goodbye, that's how your mind worked even now. Saying goodbye is one of the most difficult things a person could do, and saying goodbye is one thing you wont do especially now.
I can't let Sanji know I won't come back to him, leave him on the edge of his seat, then come back as if nothing happened!
By the sounds of it, the crew more than had Moriah under control, especially when he had no zombies or shadows to control. Based on what you've heard about their fight in the past, Moriah was nearly impossible to defeat then and a piece of cake (or pie) now. You waited out for the upcoming fleet of soldiers, and couldn't care less if the Sunny had docked at the Revolutionary Army Base. Stop the enemies before they reach the base, stop them and ensure success!
Snap
Your wrist was snatched, head snapping around, there stood Dragon, Sabo, and Sanji. Sabo and Sanji looked alarmed at what Dragon had just mindlessly done. Dragon had the tightest death grip on your wrist, even your devil fruit wasn't working to escape. "I know what you're thinking... Don't do it," Dragon warned. "We'll take care of them, but we can't take chances of your capture."
"I already had a talk with (Y/n) about this... There's no stopping her," Sanji stepped up. Once you have your mind set on something theres no changing it, he had no hope in trying to persuade differently.
"I was nice to you two years back, I'm not giving you a choice now," Dragon pulled you forward, his strength so overbearing you stumbled into his frame where he snatched your other wrist. He just had to bring up your most regrettable mistake...
"(Y/n)!" Sanji lurched forwards and grabbed Dragon by his wrist, yet he didn't budge. "Don't you dare," your boyfriend warned. Your eyes were blazing red, that was only the first phase of your beastly transformation. He frowned much to his dismay once you didn't step back. "There's no turning back, let go," Sanji warned before running off. Dragon and Sabo found the behavior off, not as much as the phenomenon of your limbs turning a black mist into his hands. Dragon didn't bat an eye, but backed away as warned, watching you become the monster you were known best.
Within seconds you were that large hunched over, long limb, misty black monster flashing crimson eyes about the scene. Howling an ear splitting shriek into the atmosphere. You paced the beach waiting for the marine battleships to dock near or on the shoreline. Many of the crew wondered if you finally had total control over your powers, the only thing you wanted a piece of was the enemy.
When the enemies were in reach, you hopped from the shore, to the Sunny, and in a way soared with one mighty jump, digging your claws into the metal base of the ship, falling off and quickly too. All to be clawing at the side of one battleship, pulling yourself aboard.
"Should we... Should we help?" Sabo stared mouth agape to the madness of soldiers being thrown to and fro from the decks of their own ships. Some dived overboard and others hid just to escape your wrath. The others that fought were the ones thrown.
"Leave her, she has this," Sanji took a stand at Sabo's side with this satisfied smirk. He was proud to have a girlfriend like you. "By the way... What'd you do with Mori-"
"Dragon is taking care of him as we speak," Sabo answered with what information he knew.
BOOM!
Down went a battleship, and another, and another, it was like a domino effect. The pirates were winning! The Marines can't even touch the shore, this plan really backfired. Everyone began to celebrate the becommings of a winner until the battleships really declined in numbers to single digits. There was no way you could make it to shore.
Just as Sanji jumped to your aid, the last ship had sunk within the sea, and your shadow monster self were nowhere to be seen either. "(Y/n)..." Sanji's heart broke, all that was left were flames and smog that polluted the air. All this made the once baby blue sky turn a musky black, and air heavy nearly unable to breathe.
Sabo pressed a breathing mask to Sanji's chest, giving the man sympathetic eyes of understanding. "Put this on and head into the base with your crew, I'll lead a search party."
"Thanks..." Sanji took the breathing mask that would filter the air for him, but never put it on. Sanji only took it from the Revolutionary to be nice, and took a squat on the shoreline. Everything only seemed to be getting worst, no sunlight had shed on this battlefield. The only way hope would overcome despair is if you were smiling before him, without a care in the world.
Hours later, Sanji hadn't went inside the base of the Revolutionary Army like he was ordered to. Not even his own crew could motivate him to leave your rescue to the Army. A light in the dark had shed on a ship whose figurepiece was a dragon nearly six hours later when the sun had set and the sky were black with stars glittering everything the eye can see. Sanji stood up immediately and awaited just for one soul to reveal themselves. To his relief, Sabo popped up first... A limp, drenched body held in his arms.
"No..." Sanji breathed clutching onto his chest. One tear dropped into the sand, then two.
"I see you're as stubborn as her," Sabo huffed, approaching Sanji blindly with you in his arms. "Thought I told you to go inside Sanji."
"I was too worried... You can see why," Sanji fought his tears that came out anyways.
"A piece of ship debris caught her and pulled her under," Sabo sighed, setting your body down on the sand gently. Your hair stuck to your face, skin so pale you were a ghost. Nothing about you looked lively anymore. "It was hard getting her out of the sea... This was an unfortunate chain of events for all of us... I'll leave you alone," Sabo pats Sanji on the back, and took his leave. Sanji sat back down, reaching out to your motionless hand curiously, finding it ice cold to the touch. Then resumed to mourning over the sight of your lifeless body.
A few more hours later, the crew were finally informed of your unfortunate demise and joined Sanji. No words were shared, only tears were shed. There was a tap at the blondes backside, Sanji turned his head slightly, and nearly jumped out of his skin.
"(Y-Y/n)!?" Sanji gasped, the shadow being stood behind him darker than the night sky, with crimson eyes that shown like a lighthouse in the night. The crew perked up and backed off just a little. How were your shadow here if you're dead? Or... Maybe they were seeing your spirit crossing over in the afterlife.
Your shadow lightly embraced Sanji from behind, the shadow had your warmth, bring Sanji to tears once again. It began parting just seconds later, and stepped over to your body. Its hand grazed your pale cheek, before it mystified away with the wind. It was quite a sight they all had to admit, it moved whoever saw it. A spirit passing over was uplifting.
Cough cough
Your body twitched, chest pulsing, you were hacking up your lungs? Sanji reached over lying his hand upon your chest frantically, you had a heartbeat that tickled his fingertips. The blonde smiled with delight, pressing his lips to yours, blowing his smoky breath into your lungs to give life... Just to vomit water into his face, but he couldnt care less. Sanji was laughing with tears of happiness as you finally awoke, breathing heavily but alive!
"H-how?" Chopper muttered. "She was long dead."
"You can't tell me she played dead for ten hours," Kid growled.
"Highly unlikely," Robin agreed in a daze.
"I didn't even know I could do that..." You breath amazed, yet dazed as well in confusion.
"Didn't know what?" Sanji questioned, pulling your cold frame to his own, you adored his warmth and snuggled in.
"It was only a hunch... But when Moriah forced my shadow out of my body, I felt disembodied and saw everything through my shadow."
"Which explains why your shadow had two red eyes instead of one," Sanji tagged on.
"Before I destroyed the last ship... I separated my shadow from my body in its purest form... Turns out, I can separate my soul from my body," you grinned, and refused to stop.
"Sounds like what I can do... Yohohoho," Brook bowed down removing his hat.
"Well whatever," Sanji hugged you tighter. "That stunt you pulled just saved you! We ended a war and probably saved the Pirate age."
"You never cease to amaze us," Robin giggled.
"I'm just happy you're alive!" Luffy and Usopp wept and tackled you and Sanji into a bigger group hug. Zoro shrugged and joined in, next came Franky who hooked his arms around Nami and Robin forcing them to partake. Chopper squeeze in, and Brook didn't know what to do. A hug from him would be horrible, he was all bones. You were suffocating in the hug, but adored it either way, through the hug, you noticed one person missing. As did another person.
"Get in here, nobody will judge," Franky called Kid out who only stood with his arms crossed.
"Not happening-" Kid growled once Nami and Franky pulled him in and forced him to take part.
"I love you all," you smiled into Sanji's chest.
Extended Ending
After cooling off at the base of the Revolutionary Army, the Straw Hats had set sail once again for more adventures to come. First came Dressrosa then a really heartbreaking chase for Sanji in Whole Cake Island. Everything there was taken care of, you and Luffy had to persuade him out of marriage just because Sanji was keeping his Old Man Zeff alive because he was a victim of Blackmail. To his surprise, you weren't mad, just needed an explanation behind his actions.
"I'm still sorry about everything..." Sanji sighed as he stood beside you. You were gazing out upon the sea as they set sail for the next island. You diverted said gaze and glared at your lover.
"You're not married, leave the subject be," you rolled your eyes. "Just chill out, I'm tired of your apologies."
"Fine," Sanji embraced you from behind. "I got a few questions for you."
"Go ahead," you eased up, at least he isn't sulking about his mistakes anymore.
"When you first arrived on this crew, did you always like me or did you have a thing for Zoro?"
You growled, "What the heck Sanji..."
"Just answer me," Sanji purred. "At first you were more friendly with him, you both had a past too. I'm only curious."
"I never liked Zoro," you finally admit.
"What about kids?" Sanji piped up. "You tend to have a soft spot for Chopper but you find him quite annoying too."
"I've never really thought about having a kid, it was something that never really caught my interest."
"What about marriage?" Sanji purred, embracing you tighter. "Would you ever devote yourself to another man?"
"Well," you snickered. "If the right man asked."
"What if I asked... Would you marry me?" Sanji stole one arm from your waist and dug through his pocket. When his arm reappeared, there was a silver ring sitting in the pit of his hand.
"Of course I would," you nearly squealed in happiness to the final question to be brought into light.
