Chapter 21: The Ball of Death

Loud slaps of skin filled the air in an echo. The noises were cringe-worthy but easily overpowered. You sat at a small table sat out upon the deck of the Sunny, watching over the game of volleyball between many of the boys. It looked fun, very fun, it was a game you used to play in your youth at home with your brother while mother and father were working their tailbone off. Unfortunately, over the years, the rules of the game were no longer familiar and memories were faded to a dusty fog.

Chopper sat on your lap watching the game as well while you carefully lifted some weights with one arm slung over the back of the chair. Chopper clapped with shy giggles whenever Luffy whined about losing a point or if one of the boys fell, then an array of laughter was to follow. Robin wasn't really interested as she sat to your right, going through the weekly newspaper with Nami hovering over her shoulder. Nami collected new bounty posters from the paper and named off a few, some rather depressing. Especially Kid's, the prisoner below deck, his poster said he was wanted only dead with no further explanation. In which, since his appearance, the crew knew of that change but great news for him as well. No way anybody was going to take his life with you and most importantly Luffy around being the pure teenager he was. It was unfortunately undecided on what shall come to the former captain.

"Wow, look at that," You glanced over at the girls, setting down your weight to lie upon the deck, and scooped up two wanted posters Nami had sat upon the face of the table. Your own, and a blonde man of whom you've met only a few times before. Each confrontation shorter than the last. "That's a first... Now they're really prioritizing my capture if I have a larger bounty than scarface," you whistled examining the two posters side by side. Your bounty was now 700,000,000 berries. 200 million larger than the last printed bounty from easily five to eight months beforehand. Now you were more wanted than Luffy's brother and 2nd of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo.

"To prioritize you over the Revolutionary Army really says something," Robin commented while examining Sabo's Wanted Poster firsthand. "I keep forgetting you and Sabo have quarreled before."

"Only to save your ass," you snickered. "Too bad I'm weak now, I'd love to fight him again." Yes, everytime you and Robin had crossed paths over the time skip Sabo and once in a while Dragon came to her rescue being a valuable asset and all. You knew better than to mess with Dragon, you respected the man greatly, but Sabo was just another face. Being you had a shadow devil fruit, he always had the upper hand and so you were always found making a quick getaway. Sabo, much like Sanji, was a worthy opponent indeed.

"I'm sure he'd love to," Robin grinned. "I've informed Dragon when you first joined our crew that you're practically a Revolutionary."

"You... Did?" You were speechless, to say the least.

"Did you not want that?" Robin frowned. "Since joining us you've stopped attacks on the Revolutionaries, and your beliefs work hand in hand with them. It might even explain your raise in bounty," since Robin explained her side of the story, you eased in and welcomed that fact. Robin wasn't wrong in the slightest, you were better off a Revolutionary years back. Why not start now?

"Yeah," you agreed, picking up your weights once again from within your seat. "It only means more trouble for us though..."

"I wouldn't say that," Nami spoke nearly sarcastically. "Nah we're screwed..." Robin elbowed Nami from where she stood.

"At least I'm working to get my strength up... By force from Zoro and Chopper, unfortunately," days ago, once you could actually stand on your own for a change, Chopper and Law talked about rehabilitation and therapy to build up the muscles within your body since the surgery stripped you of your superhuman capabilities. Zoro gladly forked over some of his old handheld weights for you to use, in which you try to use every moment you could.

Slap!

"Arg!" You dropped the weights and held your head in your hands. Chopper shrieked and hopped off your lap.

"Can't you boys aim the ball better!?" Chopper chastised the boys for causing your minor injury that had soon cleared up to a sting upon your scalp. Luffy, Franky, Sanji, and Zoro all stood with their head hung low with regret for hurting their recovering family member. You didn't really care though, an apology would suffice. The white volleyball sat at your feet, stained from the grass and dirt of the deck. You picked up the leather ball, wondering how such a plush squishy ball hurt you so bad.

"Sorry (Y/n)," the boys all apologized in unison from where they stood. Sometimes they acted like complete children, and that got you laughing.

You tossed the ball at Luffy, he caught it effortlessly. "Go and have fun you idiots," you smiled softly.

"Hey, want to play with us?" Luffy asked you with his casual cheesy smile, stepping forward from his spot. "I'm sure a break from Zoro's stupid weight training won't hurt," Zoro's face flushed red with anger, Sanji restrained him from murdering the captain with ease. "Come on (Y/n)," Luffy lent out his hand, you stared at it for a good minute.

"Uneven teams," you pointed out.

"That's not a problem," Franky smirked. "I'll just talk with the beautiful Robin."

"Okay then," you grinned softly taking Luffy by the hand. He helped you to your feet, leading you to the playing field.

"Zoro, you're on my team!" Luffy danced with the ball at hand. "The Lovebirds on the other! Now get your cooties away from me," Luffy managed to make both Sanji and yourself snicker. Sanji nicely escorted you to his side of the net with a guiding hand that found your own. You recalled what you examined from watching their previous games and still felt confused and ready to wing everything. It's been easily fifteen years since the last time you've played this game.

"Wanna serve?" Sanji asked you right out of the gate putting you before himself. You stared at him with shock greatly noticeable through your orbs of (e/c).

"Um... Sure," Sanji handed you the ball. You took in and backed up until you were an okay distance from the net. It was overly clear that you had no idea what you were even doing while you stared at the ball of white and squirmed in place confused on what position to get within... And there are only two ways to serve a volleyball. Luffy and Zoro were dying of laughter, meanwhile, Sanji was trying his hardest to keep his composure... With his face reddening by the second.

"Here," Sanji got tired of your cute struggling. "The easiest way to serve is to hold it in your less dominant hand and almost literally punch the ball from beneath with your other hand," Sanji wedged the ball beneath his arm and manually moved your arms to the position he was talking about. Then placed the ball within your left hand. "Got it?" Sanji himself was extremely unsure about you at this point.

"Yeah..." And there it was, the unconfident 'yeah' that everyone knows very well. Sanji huffed waiting for disaster and took his place on the grass court. You bit your lip to focus, brought your fist back, everyone's suspicions were soon miscalculated as they awaited the perfect serve. You released your fist, hitting the underside of the ball, it hit the net just afterward. You had the most embarrassed and betrayed look upon your red face.

"Somebody kill me now..."

"(Y/n)... Just take my place, I'll serve," Sanji pats you on the back gently as a sign of 'you tried your best' and fetched the ball meanwhile Luffy and Zoro were still laughing their butts off. You stooped on over to Sanji's previous spot and prepared to hit the ball if it were to come your way. Your confidence in this game was extremely low, it was as if you've never played this game once in a day of your life. That's when you remembered, you never did win any games of Volleyball with your older brother as a child...

Sanji served the ball, it went over the net, unlike yours. And Zoro hit the ball with his forearms that went over the net once again and Sanji hit it to the other side with ease. Luffy dove to hit the ball and it flew into the air. It descended and Zoro jumped to spike the ball. The ball looked as if it were coming right at you like a hawk swooping in to catch its prey.

Bam!

Next thing you knew, you were sitting within a chair holding a bloodied rag to your nose.

"I hate volleyball..." You huffed while Sanji had you take the rag from your nose and cleaned you up a bit with a wet cloth.

"Don't worry, we won't make you play again," he grinned, placing your rag under your nose once again. "I'll make a special treat to cheer you up, how does that sound?" Sanji always knew the correct words to say, you finally smiled.

"I'd love that."
