Chapter 18: Shadow-Link
There's yet another reference in here, good luck Danganronpa fans!
Your orbs opened up to a cavern of steel. Besides the air that entered and escaped through your nostrils with a whistle, a dull beep echoed within the room on a constant loop that seemed to go on forever. There was a sudden realization that your body felt heavy, almost as if drained of all energy you had. It felt as if you were drowning within the ocean but breathing, and unable to surface. A dead weight that'd sink and sink in the waters of black without any hope of rescue. Somehow you recognized this feeling above all else, an emotion better known than pain in your happy little world.
Helplessness.
This all felt like deja vu above all else. "I've dreamt this-this scenario before," your heart picked up in pace with your hands and forehead feeling moist against the chilled air, the dull beeps within the room quickened in unison with your own heart like an echo. Footsteps came in such a rushed manner to a stop at your bed, you were too lost within your own terrified thoughts to even look. Your worst nightmare had became reality. A hand was rested upon your chest, causing you to jolt from nothingness.
"Calm down," the man asked quite nicely from you through his firm voice. "At this rate you'll give yourself a heart attack... Trust me, nobody needs that," the same man reassured. That voice became familiar as you took his words and gut them within your brain, it was all confusing though. Normally you'd never think twice, if you never heard somebody the first time you wouldn't even try to get the words just to reassure. And so your eyes left the steel ceiling and let out a breath of relief. "You recognize me (Y/n)?" Law questioned sounding lost on his end, never once did his eyes of gold leave yours.
"Y-yes... Why wouldn't I?" You asked greatly to your own confusion, then your mind fled to something else. "Nevermind that... I feel really weird," you pushed on the mattress to sit up, white flooded your vision, your head felt overly light all so suddenly. Law reacted quickly and pushed you down to the bed for a second time.
"Don't," he snapped. "I need you to sleep that's it. You aren't in shape-"
"I don't understand," you interrupted and began to shiver and shake. "W-where am I? What did you do to me? Why do I feel so different-"
"Calm down, you're actually in my bed on my ship," Law reassured once again, you took a glance around the room. He wasn't wrong, just normally you were in your own room or lying upon the examination table. Law understood your great deal of confusion, once the surgeon figured you finally got that fact through to your own self, he resumed. "I'll explain everything else later, I'm dealing with... A lot of things at the moment. Right now you're the least of my concerns," Law suddenly glanced towards the doorway. "Bepo told me about your awakening... When I really should be on deck-"
The door was thrown open with a crash! "B-b-boss!" Bepo scampered into the room in a sweaty mess with Penguin tailing behind him in a worried state quite similar to the bear's. Law snapped his head around with his teeth tightly clenched together. "Kid, he's attacked!" The polar bear wailed out, then suddenly the submarine shook violently, something bashed up against its side, knocking everyone to their knees.
"Fucking hell," Law hissed struggling to get to his feet through the rough bobbing of the vessle. "Of all times why now?"
"He got tired of waiting for you," Penguin huffed wiping the sweat from his forehead into his sleeve.
"Does he know about (Y/n)?" Law nearly gasped.
"No," Penguin stammered. "B-but he won't leave until he gets answers!"
"At least he isn't here for her," Law jumped from his spot, stopped suddenly and spun around. "You two stay here and keep (Y/n) calm... I can't imagine how scared she must be right now."
"You got it boss," Bepo smiled and his captain left with a spring in his step. The two men had no need to look at you to tell you were freaking out, the heart monitor was going haywire.
"Knock it off!" Law growled as he stepped upon deck. His red headed rival held the throat of one of the Surgeon's own crew within his hand with a devilish sneer. He took a glance around, nobody looked to be harmed, more they were scared out of their minds. "You have some nerve coming here Eustass," the Surgeon glared at the red head.
"I haven't harmed anyone... yet," Kid snickered.
"Besides the point," Law tuts. "Tell me what you need so you can get the hell out of here."
"Gladly," Kid released a member of Law's crew from his grasp. "I'll be quick, I'm still looking for (Y/n) and I've noticed on her most recent wanted poster, she's still quite close to you," Kid dug through his pocket and threw a crumpled piece of stained parchment at him, Law hasn't yet seen your newest poster and probably regrets doing so, he was quite taken back to find that he himself stood in the background of your poster.
"It doesn't really matter if (Y/n) was with me or not," Law recrumpled the wanted poster and tossed it over his shoulder to sink within the sea. "Last time I saw her, she was just barely alive and I denied treatment. The Straw Hats more than likely handed her over to the Marines to save her, if not, she's dead."
"Then explain what you were doing in her picture," Kid huffed crossing his arms
"Did you not hear me?" Law pinched the bridge of his nose. "She came to me, I denied her treatment. Besides that, Marines... That's about it."
"My mistake," Kid groaned, resting on one leg. "One last question... Who's holding (Y/n)?" Law hesitated for he knew exactly who was holding you in the photograph. Only one pirate in all the world has a slim build, smoked, and wore a black suit, and no its not Capone. Now he didn't know whether telling the truth or a lie was better in this situation.
"No clue," Law crossed his arms.
"You're so full of shit..."
"Sanji..." Chopper sighed as he trotted up to Sanji and tugged on his pants leg. Sanji used a finger to push up on the brim of his sun hat and sat up within the lawn chair.
"What is it Chopper?" The Cook asked with a hint of annoyance.
"(Y/n)'s shadow has been acting weird lately," Robin glanced up from the world newspaper to Chopper's comment. "It's now... beeping? And it can't keep a shape," Sanji pursed his lips as Chopper held out your shadow within his hoofs with glossy and the shadow acted like a misty ball of flame with the usual red eye that seemed to flicker like a lightbulb on the verge of burning out.
"Chopper," Sanji sighs. "She's more than likely doing fine, she's in Law's care after all," Robin was frightened by Sanji's almost careless expression. "Law is one of the best doctors out there... so leave the subject be," Sanji rested back into his chair. Robin frowned, he is still hurting after all...
"Why is (Y/n)'s shadow here," Robin hummed wearing a disappointed look upon her face.
"I don't know..." Chopper sighed long and hard, Sanji sat up within his chair and pulled the little reindeer into his lap. "I wish she was here though," Chopper sniffled with tears in his eyes.
Robin's eyes narrowed. "Aren't any of you disturbed that (Y/n) is more than likely spying on us through that shadow?" Robin glared at Sanji and Chopper throwing them into a state of alarm. "(Y/n) is a snake, she's jumped around on more than one occasion to Law, Kid's, and even our own crew-not to forget her former position in the government. I'd toss that shadow of hers overboard," Robin stood up and snatched your shadow from Chopper.
"But Robin," Chopper cried latching onto her leg. "I thought you were her best friend besides Sanji!!!"
"I thought she was a changed woman..." Robin hissed. "Once heartless, always heartless..."
"T-There you are *static*" a male voice flooded from the shadow causing Robin to jolt with large eyes nearly dropping the ball of mist into the ocean. "P-put me d-d-down!" Your voice came out of the shadow loudly with much breaks in speech like a radio wave. Sanji and Chopper jumped from their spots to listen in desperately.
"I knew t-to *static* come here once I-I-I *static* hiding behind Law like a p-p-puss-*static*"
"(Y/n)'s in trouble," Chopper whimpered, scaling up Sanji's body to rest upon his shoulders.
"That sounds like Kid," Sanji growled with tense features. "(Y/n) is no doubt in trouble."
Large crash noises came from the shadow, the shadow distorted in sync with the crashes.
"I'm t-to-to weak..." you whimpered forcing eyes to a close.
"Lost your fighting spirit?" Kid's question came out loud and clear, the eye on the shadow grew intense like a strong clear connection had finally been made.
"I'd fight you if I could... Never Mind that... What happened to Law?"
"Drowning in the ocean if you don't come with me," Kid smirked, grabbing a handful of your hair just for the heck of it. "Look at me when you talk (Y/n)," Kid growled for he grabbed you by the chin with his real arm and forced you to look at him, yet you couldn't see a thing he was doing. Instead, you gazed upon three of your former crew with eyes that glistened with tears for they wanted to help you with all their heart. The sight even made you tear up seeing how much they still cared despite your actions and loss.
"This was exactly why I left..." your voice wavered as you broke up in a fit of tears. "Sorry that I left without saying goodbye Robin and Chopper and-and... Sanji..." You wept taking the three all by surprise. Robin wasn't wrong, you really could spy on them through your shadow. It never dawned on anybody that you could do such a thing, your powers seemed to have no limits.
"(Y/n) tell us where you're at," Sanji barked that question through your shadow. Your eyes widened with panic as his demand enunciated through the submarine. He wasn't supposed to answer back... You thought with regret.
"Keeping ties with your former crew," Kid hissed as he heard Sanji's demand as well, throwing you into a nearby wall, just to hold you up by your throat. "You've gone soft," he hissed. "Last time we met, you were killing everyone in sight-"
"Leave (Y/n) alone, Shitface," Sanji growled with eyes aflame with pure hatred. Kid took great offense to the nickname and took advantage of this connection.
"And what if I don't fancypants?" Kid smirked for he knew exactly who was talking through your shadow's end.
"I'll hunt you down and kill you... Mess with my lady, I'll take you to the grave," Your heart beat madly to learn that Sanji still cared for you above all else and your rejection not so long ago.
"I'll take it that the rose I received in the mail from an ally of mine was yours... How pathetic," your eyes widened, Sanji's symbol of love somehow made it to Kid. Now it's being used against you both, that's where he's mistakenly crossed the line.
"Quit worrying about me Sanji, I may be too weak at the moment... But I'll take care of this problem," Sanji heard your reply, your shadow mystified into thin air from the palm of his hand. All that he did was stare into his hand as if what just happened-never actually happened in the first place.
"Sanji?" Robin sighed resting a hand upon his shoulder.
Sanji smacked Robin's hand away. "I don't care anymore," he spoke having Robin's eyes widen in shock. "We're getting (Y/n) back... I'll even go against Luffy if I must-"
"It's fine Sanji," Luffy stepped in, then everyone else who was previously missing popped in as well. They all clearly heard the entire situation play out. "Tra-Guy and (Y/n) need our help... So let's go kick some ass!" Sanji grinned towards his Captain who always redeemed himself as the one and only captain in one way or another.
Unfortunately, the entire Straw Hat Crew had set sail to help the Heart Pirates only to be stumped as nobody had a clue as to where they could be. Everyone began to wonder if the Kid Pirates had wiped them out and they'll be too late to rescue any of them. That worry and guilt however washed away once your shadow reappeared all so suddenly just a few days after the distress call in the shape of a raven that flew and perched itself upon Sanji's arm.
"You there (Y/n)?" Sanji asked with a large smile that stretched from ear to ear.
"Yeah, it's me," you replied back through the shadow.
"You and Law okay?" Well duh! How else is she talking to me?
"Sorry for calling back my shadow so suddenly Sanji, but it was the only way I could protect myself at the moment-"
"It's fine (Y/n)," Sanji interrupted you. "I just need to know if you're okay."
"I'm okay to an extent... I'll explain later," you answered back and took a glance over to Law who's entire torso was wrapped in bandages as far as the eye can see. "Kid got Law good though, he used his magnetic powers and now there's a shard of metal lodged in Law's hip... It's out but he's not the happiest."
"Yeah no shit," Law rolled his eyes of gold.
"That's good," Sanji could finally take a breath of relief, everyone began filing out on deck and circling him to listen in on your conversation. "It's been over a month (Y/n)... I want to see you again."
"Well I'm-"
"Sanji!" Franky and Usopp hollered from the opposite end of the Sunny.
"What!?" Sanji growled startling your shadow just a bit. "Can't you see I'm talking to (Y/n)!?"
"Shut up Dartboard," Zoro snickered.
"I think you'd rather see your dream girl rather than just talk to her," Nami leaned up against Zoro's side with a cocky grin as Sanji was overwhelmed with feeling of all kinds.
"Is she here?" Sanji finally asked.
"Well the golden submarine doesn't lie-" Nami couldn't even finish her sentence before Sanji bolted off towards Franky and Usopp with his heart pounding madly in anticipation for your return. Not even a mile away, there sat a golden submarine upon the surface of the sea, out on the deck there you stood leaned up against Law's side for support where you wore a smile. Sanji felt like he could cry tears of happiness.
"You could've warned me you were visiting," Sanji joked around as soon as the submarine docked at the side of the Sunny.
"What're you saying?" You asked, outstretching your arms awaiting Sanji's welcome aboard the ship. Sanji gladly took the hint and reached over the railing, picking you up and sat you down upon said railing. "I'm... Home," You managed to speak, Sanji lurched out and pulled you into a deep hug as he never knew he'd ever hear those words come from your mouth. "Sanji... I can't breath..." You wheezed.
Sanji gasped loosened his hold and pulled back. "S-sorry I," Sanji began to stutter. "I'm just happy you're back... But why? If you mind me asking... Cause don't you have your heart to worry about?"
"Not at all," you rested into the railing. "Law secretly forced the surgery onto me, the permanent one, and I'm not mad," everyone stood speechless, but glared at the Surgeon as soon as he made an entrance. "My 'overdrive' made me crazy," you snickered. "I almost killed myself because of it and Law drew the line at that. The day I woke up from said surgery was the day Kid attacked- But again, I'm not mad, I'm actually happy he forced the surgery onto me."
Sanji resumed to stare at you, as if he's seen a ghost. "Weirdly enough... I can tell you've changed."
"Really?" You trailed off.
"Yeah," Sanji took a drag on his cigarette all the while stroking his chin. "You're a whole lot more talkative and shy... The complete opposite as before," you frowned just hearing Sanji be unable to point out your differences without a smile to accompany him by. Sanji saw you frown and stepped forward. "It's a good difference," Sanji looked down, and took you by the hand. "This new you is even more adorable than the first," your cheeks immediately grew flustered to red and Sanji took it upon himself to savor this sight.
"Yuck... How revolting?" Your pupils shrunk, and the hairs on the back of your neck stood on end.
"Kid..." You spoke under your breath. Sanji took that name as an alarm and spun around to the redhead who only had one arm? A robotic arm.
"I faked my death a few days ago once your pretty little girlfriend cut off my arm, Black Leg," Kid howled in laughter to his loss. Sanji glanced at Kid's missing arm again, then back to you.
"That's why you called the shadow back," Sanji more states than asked in which you still shook your head to confirm. Sanji stood before you like a shield. "Fuck off Kid, leave her alone and you may walk away unharmed."
Luffy stepped forward from his spot with a fierce look to his chocolate eyes. The second he opened his mouth, Zoro clasped a hand over it. "Let Sanji take care of this," he grunted and Luffy thankfully understood.
"I'm taking (Y/n) with me one way or another... I need her as a stepping stone towards hope, to become the King of the Pirates," The deck was soon crowded with members of Kid's crew, surrounding everyone and forced them into a state of defence. Sanji glanced over to his left finding Robin then to his right towards Nami, then back to you.
"Robin, Nami," Sanji lit himself a new cigarette, pocketing his lighter.
"Yes Sanji?" Nami asked.
"Protect (Y/n) while I deal with this asshole," Sanji stepped forwards, just feet away from Kid. He lifted his leg, a bounty of flames ate at the appendage with great brilliance and hunger.
