Chapter 22: Off To A Bad Start

"I don't know," replied Eleanor.

He looked at the man he'd been conditioned to fear, and saw him for the first time.

"You don't look much like your brother." Cadere observed.

"I take after my mom's side." He said in a low voice.

Cadere's office was smaller than Eleanor imagined it. In fact, the day student wondered how it could even be called an office at all. Surrounded by windowless stone walls in a dark room, a few trunks scattered around an old desk... compared to the rest of the night dorm, this room was abysmal.

The glow from the lantern on the desk was the only illumination and it made Cadere looks infinitely more frightening.

"No offense to you sir, but I'm not sure why you wanted to talk," said Eleanor. The boy composed himself as best as he could.

"Your brother Maurice practically lived in this room," whispered Cadere. "And he started out just like you. Maybe a little naive. But only for thinking I was."

Eleanor stayed silent. Cadere stood up.

"More than promiscuity, I won't tolerate the risk of potentially unraveling this entire institution because... because why?" Cadere asked himself. "I don't see a motive."

"I don't understand." Said Eleanor with furrowed brows. "I'm not my brother."

"Why don't you tell me some of the concerns you've been having... I heard from the nurse you visited the injured student in the infirmary." Cadere said, sitting back down. "I don't recall you being friends."

The heat in Eleanor's cheeks started to rise.

"I just want everyone to be safe." Eleanor said a bit loudly. "I thought that was your job."

Menace rose in Cadere's violet eyes, but he did not stand up. Instead, he leaned on the table with a small grin forming against the cool glow of the lantern.

"I'll see you on tomorrow's patrol." He said. "Don't be late."

Y/n whipped around, getting accustomed to Arcadia's surprises at this point.

"Oh, hi Dimitri," the girl greeted. "class seems to go by quicker here."

The boy made his way over to y/n, still overlooking the lake.

"Shouldn't you have a partner on patrol?" He asked, putting his hands in his pockets. "And the night students have a quick break. We're lucky."

"I don't know where my partner went, he just kind of went that way," you said, nodding to the right, "but when I turned, he was gone.

Dimitri grew apprehensive at this. The last thing he needed was someone wandering around lost on their own. But no matter- at least y/n wasn't alone anymore.

"If you could use a quick partner, I can walk with you to the other side," Dimitri said. "It's better than doing so alone, and there's a good chance you'll find your friend."

Y/n shrugged.

"Sure, thanks." She said warmly.

Dimitri put out his arm, embarrassingly old fashioned, and y/n shyly accepted.

The two made their way to the other side of the courtyard, overlooking the bottomless lake.

"Why is it so dark here?" You asked.

Dimitri looked down at you, as if it had never occurred to him.

"You'd think you'd need extra light here to see if you're studying at night." You added.

"You're sharp as a whip." Dimitri said with a sigh. "But nobody here is bothered by the absence of light."

Speak for yourself, you thought.

Dimitri stopped walking all of a sudden and pointed upwards.

"That is where I spend most of my time." He said fondly.

You followed his gaze and saw the stunning observatory tower, so close to the lake. "There are three observatories here at Arcadia, now you know the locations of two of them."

"I feel like there's so much I should know about this place by now," you sighed. "But there are still so many secrets. I think most of them are held by students."

Dimitri nodded, as you continued walking. "But can you say you've willingly revealed everything about yourself to all of your friends here?"

You chuckled.

"No," you told him. "All I know is Lucian likes to drink, Roman is a pain, Cadere looks like a deatheater, and you all have a high tolerance for sleep deprivation."

"We get plenty of sleep during the day," Dimitri said, his hooded eyes carefully watching yours. "But you're not wrong."

"Can you tell me about the night class?" You asked.

You saw his shoulders shake as he chuckled. Dimitri looked down at you with a curious gaze.

"Interested in someone, are we?" He asked slowly. A smirk grew on his lips.

"No no!" You said quickly. "Not like that- it's just- well- everyone's so secretive."

"I'm only teasing, y/n." He said softly. "But ask away to your hearts content."

You thought about it for a while. Questions arose about every night student.

[ Under the comments, there will be a question for each night student. Choose one, and continue reading ]

"I hope that was a bit helpful," he smiled as you neared the courtyard corner. "If you'll be here every night, you'll have lots of time to spend learning more about whomever you're interested in."

Dimitri's playful grin appeared once more. He was always so sullen. You hoped he couldn't see your cheeks flush.

"Hey y/n," you heard Eleanor's voice.

You let go of Dimitri's arm.

"Eleanor!" You shouted, running to your friend. "Where have you been??"

"Sorry, it was urgent." He said. Eleanor wrapped an arm around your shoulder.

"This guy giving you any trouble?" He asked playfully.

"No, Dimitri was just helping me since someone took off without saying anything.

"Well, we've got it from here." Eleanor said to Dimitri. He didn't take his arm off you.

"You patrol isn't much longer," said Dimitri, an unreadable expression lingering on his face. "Good luck, y/n..."

He stood curiously while Eleanor piloted you the other way and began walking slowly in that direction.

"Eleanor-" you laughed. "You can take your arm off me. Dimitri is fine."

"That guy just doesn't look trustworthy to me." Your friend remarked, his glasses flaring in the cold.

"I'm not worried about him," you replied playfully. "It's Avery you've got to worry about."

Eleanor abruptly stopped before continuing with long strides.

"Hey, where are we going-" you asked. You tried to pull back a little bit, but to your surprise, Eleanor had an unbreakable hold.

"I ask because I care," he said, his height intimidating you for the first time. "You don't have any romantic interest in any of the night students, do you?"

You weren't about to tell him that. You didn't even know where this was coming from. And so what- was it a crime to enjoy someone's company?

"You would never consider Avery as anything other than a man-whore, would you?" Eleanor asked, his tone sharp.

You stared at him with wide eyes, unsure of whether or not he was serious or joking.

"I wouldn't call him that, but Avery is what he is," you said quickly. "Can you let go of me Eleanor, I don't know why you're being so weird."

A few seconds of silence ensued before Eleanor started to laugh. His arm around your neck tightened.

"Y/n, I hope you find a man who sees you as a human being," he said, looking up to the sky. Suddenly he released you- you had to gasp for air.

"What the hell Eleanor?!" You yelled, feeling your neck. "What's gotten into you?"

"Y/n?"

You turned to see Belmont and Dimitri not far off behind you.

"What is going on?" Asked Bel.

"Cadere asked to speak with you, Eleanor." Said Dimitri.

"Keep thinking we're all monsters, y/n." Eleanor whispered into your neck.

"Come on." Glared Belmont. The blonde was a mixture of frightened and angry.

"I'll take care of this, you take care of her," said Dimitri. Suddenly, Eleanor rolled his eyes and walked over to Dimitri with his hands up.

The two disappeared inside the dormitory.

Belmont rushed to your side.

"Y/n, are you hurt?" He asked, fear stitched in his voice.

"N-no... I don't think so," you said. "I don't know what just happened- was Eleanor drunk or something?"

"Shh shh... it'll all be alright." Belmont consoled you gently. He lifted your chin to meet his eyes as if you were fragile as a kitten. "Just look into my eyes."

"What-" you began to protest, but suddenly, all you could see was silver envoloping his hooded green eyes, and you began to feel very sleepy.

You were still conscious, however, and took note of the two figures who had joined Belmont.

"Did the others get sent back for tonight?" Lucian asked.

"They're gone for now," Roman answered.

"Um, guys..." Belmont stammered, keeping his eyes on you. "I don't think it's working."

"What do you mean it's not working?" Roman asked loudly, folding his arms.

"I mean it's not working." Stressed Bel.

"I couldn't use all my powers on her either." Said Lucian, leaning over you.

Roman struck Lucian in the chest with the back of his hand.

"Shut up," he hushed. "If it's not working then there's a chance she'll remember this."

"Sorry," Lucian said quietly.

"Lucian, work with me on this," said Belmont.

"We can't afford to get Cadere- we're in enough shit already." Roman said. The redhead watched you closely.

Suddenly along with the silver taking over your senses, you were met with with a voice in your head... only it sounded like it was real.... but coming from everywhere?

Eleanor left to see Cadere. You patrolled the night class. You went back to your room.

Eleanor left to see Cadere. You patrolled the night class. You went back to your room.

Eleanor left to see Cadere. You patrolled the night class. You went back to your room.

Suddenly, the darkness surrounded you no matter how much you tried to keep your eyes open.

"I'll take her back-" said Lucian.

"I can-" said Belmont.

"I will take her." Roman said sternly. "You two- hopefully- took care of the memory problem so you've done your part."

The other boys were discontent with Roman escorting y/n back to her dorm- but he was adamant.

"She should be fine," Bel said, stroking her hair. Roman spun you the other way in his arms so no one would be touching your hair. Belmont pouted.

"Let's not make this a habit." Lucian said to the others. "There are other ways to find out what's really going on."

"You're telling me." Roman muttered sarcastically, before setting off.

The window was easy to go through, and it reminded Roman of his actions when he was younger.

"I thought that was the last time I'd climb through a window for a girl." Roman said as he gently laid you down in your bed. The boy pulled the covers over you, and lit up your night lamp. But before disappearing out the window, he stopped.

"Stop trying to get yourself killed." He sighed. "It's giving me a headache."

And with that, you slept like a log- for the most part. The tossing and turning was a result of the patchy nightmares you were having, of Eleanor with fangs, refusing to let go of you- but none of it mattered. Because when you woke up, you didn't remember any of it.
