Family Often Disappoints

I was assigned to help with Oobleck's mission. My cane is, of course, not perfect for Grimm its ment more towards human opponents. I walked up to the good doctor as he turned and greeted me.

Oobleck: Ah Roman your here, good.

He pulls out a small device.

Oobleck: Now you must remain within a certain distance of me or whoever has this. You will get shocked by your monitor if you leave the area. The same would have happened if you left Beacon without permission or without someone who had this.

Y/n: Good to know doc.

Oobleck: Let's wait until the team that chose this mission arrives.

After a good few minutes, I see team... RWBY approaching. I slightly blushed, hoping that they weren't here for this mission, but that thought soon went out the window.

Oobleck: Why, hello girls! Who's ready to fight for their lives?

They all had various faces of shock or disappointment upon realizing he would be the huntsman they'll be shadowing.

Weiss: Professor Oobleck and Torchwick?

Oobleck: Yes, I'm afraid those bags won't be necessary, girls, seeing as you've opted to shadow a Huntsman on what is now essentially a reconnaissance mission. I can assure you, we will not be establishing a single base of operations; rather, we will be traversing several miles of hazardous wasteland and making camp in any defendable locations we may stumble upon. I packed all of our essentials myself, plotted our air course, and readied the airship. And... It's Doctor Oobleck. I didn't earn the PhD. for fun, thank you very much!

Weiss looks over at Blake Belladonna, who is equally disturbed.

Weiss: Uh...

Oobleck: Come now, children; according to my schedule, we are already three minutes behind! ...schedule! Torchwick, I need you as a co-pilot just in case before we reach our destination.

Listening to the good doctor's orders, I start making my way to the airship.

Small timeskip

I'm in the co-pilot's seat as we are flying over trees that were transitioning to broken buildings. I could also hear any and all conversations in the area behind me with the door closed.

Yang: I guess I just never saw you as much of a fighter.

Oobleck: I admit I fancy myself more of an intellectual, but I can assure you, as a Huntsman, I've had my fair share of tussles.

Ruby: Like the mushroom?

Blake: Those are truffles.

Ruby: Like the sprout?

Yang: Those are Brussels.

Oobleck: Besides, given my expertise in the field of history as well as my dabblings in the archaeological surveys, our dear headmaster saw fit to assign me to this particular... assignment!

Weiss: What does history have to do with this?

Oobleck: Why, what a preposterous question, you silly girl! Why, history is the backbone of our very society! And the liver! Probably the kidneys, if I were to wager.

Weiss: And that means..?

Oobleck: The southeast quadrant outside of Vale is home to wild forests and deep caves, but it is also the location to one of the kingdom's greatest failures!

Ruby: Mountain Glenn.

Yang: That's right! It was an expansion of Vale... but in the end, it was overrun by Grimm and fenced off from the rest of the city.

Oobleck: Correct! And now it stands abandoned as a dark reminder.

Blake: And a likely place for a hideout.

Oobleck: Precisely!

Pilot: We are coming up on the drop zone, get ready.

I get up from my seat and head to the door where the group was. The airship came close to the ground, and we all dropped down. I scan the area as we land to watch for ambushes.

Oobleck: Ladies! You still may be students, but as of this moment, your first mission as Huntresses has begun! From this point forward, you need to do exactly as I say! Do you understand? Ruby! I thought I told you to leave all of your bags back at school.

Ruby: But, uh, you hadn't told us to listen to you yet. So I didn't.

Oobleck: She's not wrong... Very well, Ruby; leave your bag here, we can pick it up upon our return.

Ruby: But I, well, uh-

Oobleck: Young lady, what in the world could you possibly have in that bag that could be so important to bring it with...

Ruby: Get back in the bag.

Zwei looks at me for a second and barks.

Y/n: Uhhhh, good doggo.

Oobleck: We're here to investigate an abandoned urban jungle teeming with death and hostility, and you brought... a dog?

Ruby: I, uh...

Ruby gets knocked over after Oobleck zooms by and picks up the dog from the bag. He spun in circles with the dog in his arms.

Oobleck: Genius! Canines are historically known for their perceptive nose and heightened sense of sound, making them excellent companions for a hunt such as ours!

Ruby: I'm a genius!

I just shrug as the rest of her team practically facepalm at her.

Blake: What are your orders, doctor?

Oobleck: Ah, yes, straight to the chase. I like it.

He drops the dog, so I proceed to catch said pooch.

Oobleck: As you've been informed, the southeast area has been marked as a recent hot spot for Grimm activity. Now, there are several possible explanations for this behavior, one of which being... Grimm.

Everyone was confused except me and the good doctor seeing the Beowolf in the distance. I was also trying to steel my nerves since I didn't want to die exactly, and it's my real first fight here. I am most likely gripping the handle of my cane a bit too hard trying to keep calm. I set down the good doggo, not keeping my eyes off the beowolf in the distance. My mind finally went back to the conversation, not realizing that until now, they also brought out their weapons.

Ruby: So... what now?

Oobleck: We wait. We track. If this specimen leads us to its pack, that pack may subsequently lead us to our prey.

Blake: How long do we wait?

Oobleck: It's uncertain. Hours, days, weeks. Why, lone Grimm have been known to stay isolated from the pack for months - and there's the whole pack.

His sudden realization is true: Five Beowolves are already following the first.

Weiss: What?

Oobleck: And now they've seen us.

Weiss: What?!

Oobleck: (Coming right up to Weiss' ear to shout) AND NOW THEY'VE SEEN US!

Ruby: I take it tracking them is out of the question?

Oobleck: An accurate assumption, yes.

Yang: What's the plan, then?

Oobleck: Show me what you're capable of.

Ruby: Cover your ears, Zwei.

The doggo covered said ears while they go off and fight the small hoard of beowolves.

Y/n: (thought) So the good boy is called Zwei.

Oobleck: I would like to see you fight as well, Prof. Torchwick. Only one of us needs to pay close attention to our surroundings for a hideout.

Y/n: Oh, alright.

I fire at the ones still coming down the street, aiming for the body itself, not wanting to cause craters or open a cave up. I hit one in the center of the group, killing three and maiming at least two others before they engaged the girls. (Remember his shots are explosive, and I don't know if he has normal ones.) I couldn't really help after they got into their respective fights but I don't want to try and fight one up close with a cane. Though soon after it started, it already ended.

Ruby: Eh piece of cake.

Oobleck: Do not celebrate yet, for I am certain this is the first bout of many. Shall we continue?

Cue timeskip montage of Grimm killing and Oobleck asking WBY why they wanted to be Huntresses

I walk around checking the structures for damage since it's getting late. We need a good location to settle that's not prone to collapse. Soon, I see one that would be good in all aspects needed, lookout area, and big enough. I turned back around and saw Ruby playing with Zwei with meat on her scythe.

Y/n: (thoughts) Cute on both ends. Cute doggo jumping and flipping and her being happy and slightly laughing while playing with him.

It was soon over since Oobleck came over, so she put it away.

Ruby: Sorry! Uh... Are we ready to keep going?

Oobleck: Nope! I believe that will have to do for today. It's going to be dark soon.

He throws his bag over to Yang, who makes a sound when she catches it and throws the device that controls my monitor towards Weiss, which she catches.

Oobleck: You three, set up camp in that building. Oh, and please do make sure there are no more of those... creatures. Your leader and I are going to secure the perimeter. Come, Ruby.

They walk away while we head to the same building I thought would be perfect. Once inside, they got to work while I stood by and was watched by Blake. They got the fire going and soon started talking, each of them staring me down.

Yang: I can't believe we didn't find anything...

Blake: We've always been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time. I guess we can't always have luck on our side.

Weiss: (Off-topic) That's not what I meant.

Blake: Huh?

Weiss: Earlier, about... upholding the legacy. There's more to it than that.

Yang: Yeah... No, me too. I mean... I don't know.

Blake: I don't know, either. I know what I want to do, but I figured I'd always take things one step at a time.

Y/n: One thing I know of plans is that it never works all the way through perfectly, so your current approach is fine.

Yang: Well, it doesn't matter. We know why we're here. Right?

They ignored me and stood in silence for a solid second before Oobleck came back.

Oobleck: Ah, wonderful; a textbook campfire!

Ruby: Fire! So... warm...

Oobleck: Very good! Eat your dinners and hurry to bed. We have a lot of ground to cover tomorrow, and we'll need you to take turns keeping watch over our temporary abode. Any volunteers for first watch?

Ruby: (Lifts an arm while still looking into the fire, simply answering) Yo.

Oobleck rushes off, and Ruby gets up to go over to her lookout point.

Yang: Hey, did Oobleck ask you why you wanted to be a Huntress? I mean... what did you tell him?

Ruby: Hmm... No, he didn't. Weird. Oh, well; good night, guys!

Y/n: Well, I suppose I should get some rest.

I lay down on the sleeping bag and pretend to sleep mostly to try and continue to separate memories.

Timeskip

I figured out where to start untangling memories after a good hour and actually made progress, starting with new memories and going backward. I eventually fell asleep while they were going on about the full reasons why they chose this profession.

Timeskip

I was woken up by the barks of a good boy. I got up and stretched and noticed one person wasn't here.

Blake: What's going on?

Oobleck: Grab your weapons. Your leader may be in trouble.

We proceeded to follow the good boy, which led us to a hole in the ground.

Yang: Ruby's scythe!

Blake: Oh no.

Weiss: Do you think she fell?

Oobleck: Fell?

Y/n: That would be the obvious assessment. It also makes sense to me.

Weiss: Down there.

Oobleck: Oh my. Of course! Of course, OF COURSE, OF COURSE!

Blake: What is it?

Oobleck: How could I be so stupid?!

Yang: Dr. Oobleck, what's wrong?

Oobleck: Mountain Glenn! Yes, an expansion of Vale that was inevitably destroyed by creatures of Grimm! Previously home to thousands of people! Working people commuting to the city, the main city! Developed a subway system to the inner city! Grimm attacks increased! Population in danger, now desperately searching for shelter! City evacuates into the metro tunnels, and what do they find? The southeast quadrant of Vale is known for wild forests and deep caves!

Yang: Doc, what are you saying?

Oobleck: My dear, we're not just looking for an underground crime network. We're looking for an UNDERGROUND crime network!

Blake: They've been working in caves?

Oobleck: No, no, Mountain Glenn was Vale's first serious attempt at expansion. It worked for a short period of time, thanks to an aggressive perimeter defense and unique transportation; the city developed an elaborate subway system to carry citizens safely from the new territory into the main Kingdom! Sadly, without the many natural barriers Vale had to protect its borders, Mountain Glenn was doomed from the start! As the end drew near, the citizens of the territory made one last attempt at survival: They took up shelter beneath the city! In massive caves that they had cleared out for the subway. And they had cut themselves off from the surface!

Yang: An underground village?

Oobleck: In a matter of speaking, yes. A safe haven. Until... an explosion opened the mouth of another cavern, filled with subterranean Grimm. After that, the Kingdom officially sealed off the tunnels, creating the world's largest tomb. If Ruby is down there, we must find her...

Y/n: That is why I never shot the ground. I didn't want to destroy the walkways and roads.

Weiss: Or you didn't want to expose where your cohorts were really hiding.

Y/n: Can we just get down now?

I fire the hook and latch on to something, and start heading down carefully.

Timeskip montage of searching around and being accused multiple times by Weiss

We followed the large number of white fang members to what seems like a train ready to depart. All the ideas I proposed were denied, which could have them observing them. In the end, we made some noise causing explosions and mayhem being a distraction. In said mayhem little Red came running towards us and away from someone that seemed familiar. I fire a single flare round at the group of white fang members forming in front of her, blowing them away. I kept my eyes on him while I saw him turn and walk away. Ruby jumped into her sister's arms for a moment.

Yang: Ruby!

Weiss: Are you okay?

Ruby: I'm fine, I'm fine! But listen! Julian Torchwick's got all kinds of weapons and robots down there.

Y/n: (thoughts) I have a brother.

Blake: What?! (Blake hands Ruby her weapon)

Ruby: Androids, mechs, they're all loaded up on the train cars!

Oobleck: Ahhhh, that's ridiculous. These tunnels are sealed, the tracks lead to a dead-end.

Julian: (across a speaker system) Get to your places. We are leaving now!

The train starts moving towards the tunnels.

Yang: Well, it sounds like they're going somewhere.

Ruby: We need backup. Let me call Jaune.

Y/n: I don't think team Jnpr could make it here fast enough.

Ruby: I can't get through!

Weiss: So, what do we do?

Oobleck: I believe we only have one option...

Ruby: (turning around) We're stopping that train!

We start racing towards the train. Well, they do, I hook it with my cane and get pulled up that way. Soon, they all got on with Oobleck knocking out a wfm that spotted us.

Oobleck: Hurry everyone, we must get to the front and stop this train!

I noticed Weiss was looking in a hatch.

Weiss: Err... Professor?

Oobleck: Doctor...

Weiss: (pointing down a hatch into the train) What's that?

Oobleck: (kneels down to take a look) That my dear... appears to be a bomb.

They all back away while I approach it.

Y/n: Get to the next car and detach this on.

Weiss: What are you planning?

Ruby: We got baddies.

Oobleck: Well, I didn't expect them to go-

The bomb I just picked up charges up and starts beeping.

Oobleck: -easy on us. (stands up) Time to go!

Y/n: To try and save everyone here.

I hum a song to calm my nerves as they move to the next car as I waddle my way over to the edge and toss the bomb off, making a metallic clang as I feel the car I'm on slowing down. The bomb exploded as I felt the shockwave pass by me. I thought I was gonna die as I try to hook the train again and succeeded and rejoined the group. I continue to hum as I join the fray of wfm and everyone. I couldn't fire my weapon, which could set off any more bombs. I noticed the hatch on the third car had another bomb as well. I heard an explosion as I hit a wfm upside the head and knocked them off the train in a single hit.

Y/n: How did I?

Oobleck: They're leading Grimm to the City!

Weiss: What?

Oobleck: It's the cars! They detach and explode, creating openings for the Grimm!

Blake: That's insane!

Another train car detaches itself.

Oobleck: We have to hurry! You four, go below, and try to stop those bombs!

I follow the three girls into the train.

Yang: I guess this is what we trained for.

Weiss reaches into her pouch and gives Blake a magazine filled with Dust vials.

Weiss: Here, this should help you.

Blake slides the mag into Gambol Shroud, and then the four of us charge forward. Suddenly, a girl drops in with multi-colored hair drops from the ceiling and blocks their path she stared right at me with a type of fire in her eyes.

Y/n: Do... I know you?

That set her off and jumped on me and acrobaticly sent me to the other side next to the door where we were heading.

Yang: Go on ahead. I'll handle her.

We leave Yang behind to deal with her as we go to the next car, which had WFL with a chainsaw like weapon.

Weiss: Go in ahead.

Blake: Got it.

Y/n: Alright.

I fire a flare at his feet to distract him and damage him as Blake and I get to the next car, leaving Weiss behind. We enter the next car and see who I'm quite sure is supposed to be my brother.

Julian: Ah, look who finally came back. You know you've caused a lot of trouble for me, kitty cat, and my dear brother fighting against me.

Y/n: What can I say? Family can disappoint you. My question is, what happened to your face?

Julian: You don't remember that job going bad.

I rush him with the cane raised.

Y/n: Got a case of amnesia and memories come and go.

Blake comes up behind him and goes for the attack. He managed to dodge both of us as I barely miss Blake. He goes after Blake first with her dodging with her semblance trapping his cane in ice. I rushed in and aimed for his legs for my next swing, tripping him up and Blake coming up behind and knocking him out with a swift kick to the face.

Y/n: That felt too easy.

Mini timeskip till the crash

I open my eyes as I see I'm on some raised stone platform surrounded by team Rwby. I tried to get up but felt an intense pain from my side as I saw a piece of metal sticking out of me. I looked around and finally noticed the large group of Grimm surrounding us. I am my cane just enough and fired a shot at the king taijitu as it opened its mouth.

Y/n: Go deal with them.

Everyone except for Ruby jumped into the fray as she let them come to her.

Ruby: You're not getting near him.

I watched as she went from Grimm to Grimm, slicing each one up that got close enough and fired shots of when they were far enough away. I kept my focus on the taijitu head, waiting for another moment to fire in its mouth. It never did come as I heard someone coming in.

Nora: Nooooorrraa Smash!

Nora came in and hit the giant snake right on its head. I was hoping to stay up long enough to keep helping, but my vision soon blurred before blacking out.

Timeskip

I woke up in another hospital bed, feeling a bit better, and noticed no metal sticking out of my side. I looked around and noticed I wasn't in the same hospital as before it looked like the school infirmary. A nurse came in as I sat up a bit.

Nurse: Ah, you're awake.

Y/n: Why am I not in an actual hospital?

Nurse: You were treated at one a week ago and were brought here when you were stable enough for travel. Now, lay back down. I'll get Prof. Ozpin.
