Catching Up

---Chara's POV----

I stayed close to Nightmare as he walked into the abandoned building, letting his tentacle tug me along. I used to be scared of him, but seeing all the others glare harshly at me, really sent chills down my spine.

Of course none of them have ever seen me before. They have no clue that I'm the demon child that used to inhabit Cross' body. I'm just a strange looking child that's been dragged in from their point of view.

After Nightmare had hissed at all of them for underestimating him he stalked over to a corner of the room, sitting down with Cross tightly clutched in his arms.

I sat down next to him, the pink girl also flopping down next to me.

None of the gang said anything for a moment, frozen as they watched Nightmare check himself for wounds. The whole building was dead silent for about three minutes before Error suddenly fake coughed, making Nightmare look up at him.

"First off..." Error said, eyeing the sleeping figure of Cross in his arms. "How the fuck did you manage to break into Lilitown's top security Asylum and get past all the guards, including X to save Cross and escape all within one day?!"

Nightmare glared at Error coldly before looking down at Cross and rubbing his thumb over the smol skeleton's skull. "I love him. That's how."

"That really doesn't answer my question..."

"Well it's my only answer." Nightmare growled. "So think of another question if I've disappointed you. Oh, and thanks for helping by the way." He spat that last bit with such malice that half the people in the room flinched.

Error rubbed his hands over his face, inhaling sharply. "Nightmare you know why we couldn't help Cross..."

"Oh yeah. What was your excuse again? We need a plan. Bullshit. You just didn't want to risk your lives to save him. Selfish pricks." Nightmare hissed.

Error closed his eyes, breathing out shakily before locking gazes with me. "Well then who's he?"

"The ghost that's been living in Cross' conscious for half of his life." Nightmare muttered casually, far too busy glaring at the cracks on Cross' wrist bones to care about me.

"WHAT?!" The whole gang practically screamed, instantly staring at me like I was some demon dog.

Speaking of that dog, it was also eyeing me up weirdly, its blood red eyes narrowed.

I flinched, letting my hair fall down over my eyes a bit, attempting to shield myself from view.

"So...you're Chara...?" Ink whispered, looking me up and down.

I nodded stiffly, hugging my knees to my chest. "Yeah...X separated us...by...by ripping our different soul halves apart..."

Nightmare immediately looked over at me, shocked. "H-He tore your soul in half?!"

I nodded, wincing at the memory. "He needed us separate for some reason...but whatever the reason was, we didn't find out. Because you came and rescued us. X was preparing to do something to both of us just before you set off all the alarms...and I guarantee we wouldn't have survived it..."

Nightmare hugged Cross closer to his chest, mumbling to himself as he peppered the top of Cross' skull with soft kisses.

"And who's that?" Ink asked, pointing at the pink haired girl.

She glanced over at him, her hair falling over one of her eyes and covering it. "I'm Betty. I helped the octopus escape by distracting X and some guards."

Suddenly Lust let out a gasp, staring directly at Betty. "I remember you! You helped us brake out of prison fifteen years ago!"

Betty looked him up and down before breaking out into a grin. "You were in the cell opposite me, weren't you?"

Lust nodded, laughing. "Wow fancy seeing you again."

"Long time no see." She replied, snickering softly as she glanced at me.

I smiled weakly back in response, rolling my eyes. "How'd you get caught?"

She sighed, leaning back against the wall. "Well basically, I found one of his labs, somewhere well away from here. And snuck around a bit with Kumu." She pointed at the floating pink blob by her side. "When we both got caught by none other than X himself. I legged it and ran, but the bastard managed to catch Kumu so I had to go back for him. He grabbed me as well. He didn't risk locking us up in prison in case we'd found out secret info and tried to spread it. So he locked us in the mental asylum so that anything I tried to say to him was dubbed as crazy and mental talk."

"Wow..." I muttered. "Maybe now you'll be less curious."

She laughed, shaking her head as she grinned again. "Nah, where's the fun in that? Being cautious makes life boring."

I smirked. "Well isn't that a motto to live by huh?"

She nodded, punching my shoulder lightly. "You should try it, ghost boy."

"Maybe I will, flamingo girl."

"Pff, flamingo?"

"Yeah, cuz of all the pink."

We could have gone on teasing each other for quite a while about pointless things, but a soft groan from Cross quickly shut us up as we both immediately looked over to see him shifting weakly in Nightmare's arms.

"N-Nighty...?" Cross mumbled, rubbing his face as his eyes fluttered open.

Nightmare smiled down at him nuzzling and kissing him. "I'm here Crossy. It's okay."

I glanced back at the others to see that they were also all staring at them intently, acting as if they'd never seen something like this before.

Cross rubbed his eyes sleepily, snuggling closer to Nightmare as he looked around, not quite processing were he was. "Wh-Where are we...?"

"Back at the lab..." Nightmare muttered, petting the top of his skull softly.

Cross shook his head, shaking the sleepiness out of his head before he finally seemed to get a grip of his surroundings, properly realising that we weren't in the white asylum cell. "H-Huh?"

Error and Ink looked away, seeming so incredibly guilty.

I hissed at them, hating them for what they did. What they made us go through. If it wasn't for them, Cross wouldn't be stuck in his currently broken mental state and I wouldn't be in this constant aching pain.

Cross looked at all the others, stiffening slightly as he pressed closer to Nightmare, his terrified gaze freezing as it went over Ink and Error.

Ink winced. "C-Cross...we're sorry..."

"D-Don't t-talk..." Cross stuttered, his grip on Nightmare tightening. "J-Just leave m-me alone..."

Ink and Error flinched visibly, looking down at the floor.

Nightmare nuzzled Cross questioningly, muttering softly in his 'ear'.

Cross just shook his head lightly, burying his face in Nightmare's chest. He obviously didn't want to expose Ink and Error for what they did. But if he expects me to be the one to tell Nightmare, then I won't. Nightmare would go ballistic. And we really need to stick as a team right now.

Dust coughed suddenly, standing up with a letter in his hands. "Uh, so just before you arrived, we received this letter. Don't ask how. But basically, we're gonna trust it."

Nightmare reached out a tentacle and snatched the letter, bringing it back to him before skimming over it, a bored expression on his face.

Cross pushed his face away from Nightmare's chest to look at it as well, reaching out a shaking hand to take it from Nightmare.

While they read it, the others stood up, seeming to get ready. "C'mon then."

"We're going now?" I asked, really wanting to do nothing more than sleep. Being in a physical body for so long has drained me. I'm not used to all of this, especially seeing as I'm in a human body again. I've grown so used to possessing Cross' skeleton body that having my own control in a human body has disoriented me slightly.

Error nodded, helping his kids to their feet. "Yeah. We were gonna wait to see if Nightmare came back, and if he didn't by tomorrow then we'd assume he was dead and go without him."

Nightmare growled softly, standing up with Cross in his arms. "You're very close to going without me anyway. I don't want Cross to have to go through any more of this."

Error sighed. "Nightmare, we're all sorry...but we need you if we want to have a chance in defeating X...and you know that."

Nightmare glared at him, his expression saying 'try me bitch'.

Deciding to break the tension before they started full on arguing, I spoke up. "Hey uh, where are all your kids?"

Nightmare blinked, looking around. "Uh..."

"They're upstairs!" Dust's kid said helpfully, smiling up at us.

"KIDS?!" Nightmare called, looking up at the ceiling.

Immediately the sound of scrambling feet rang out and his kids came stumbling down the stairs, their eyes wide with disbelief. "DAD?!"

They all ran forwards, fussing over the two of them, mainly Cross of course.

"H-How--"

Nightmare cut them off, shushing them softly. "I'll tell you later...but now we're leaving. So lets go."

I groaned, attempting to get to my feet. Being the amazing person I am, I failed, not actually able to get up.

"Wow. Need a hand?"

I looked up at Betty, rolling my eyes as I nodded weakly. "Please."

She reached a hand down, and I gripped onto it quickly, yelping as I was pulled up to my feet suddenly. "C'mon! Everyone's gone already!"

I looked up, seeing that indeed everyone had already left, leaving us two the only people left in the crumbling building. "Lets go then!"

I tugged her out, running after the others with her close behind, laughing as her odd pink blob thing chased us.

God, this is going to be an adventure.
