TWENTY TWO
Hazel
In what felt like no time at all the date for the rescue came. That morning we (that being me, Frank, Leo and Annabeth) went to meet with Luke, Thalia, Jason and Piper next to the man hole that me and Leo were to climb down.
When we arrived the others were already there. No one spoke for a moment. Realisation of what we were about to do seemed to be just about setting in.
“Um… I brought these,” Piper was the first to bring herself back to reality. She held up two walkie talkies, “they're long range radios,” she explained, “we'll have one here and Leo and Hazel will have one.”
“Cool!” Leo grinned at took the radio. He clipped it to his belt and looked up at the others with a defiant look on his face, “let's get this show on the road!”
********
I didn't see how this was a show. We climbed down the ladder and stepped down into the wet, dark sewer.
Me and Leo both pulled out our torches and turned them on.
“Right guys,” Annabeth’s voice sounded crackly through the radio, “you see that path straight on from the ladder?”
“Got it!” Leo replied. We set off, trudging through the stagnant water that settled in the bottom of the tunnel, “well this is just lovely isn't it.” Leo stated as he stepped in something smelly.
“Okay Annabeth,” I ignored Leo and took the radio from him, “we've just reached a branch, there's a left turn and a right turn.”
There was a moments pause, “take the left one.” Annabeth replied. We did as she said.
It went in on like that for a while. The smell got progressively worse as the journey went on.
We came to a halt at a dead end.
“Annabeth we've hit a dead end,” Leo croaked into the radio.
There was a short silence, “that's- that’s not possible.”
Hazel frowned at the wall. If it wasn't on Annabeth’s map then what was it doing here. Hazel pressed one of her hands up against the wall. There was something wrong with it. It didn't feel like the other walls in this sewer.
“Something isn't right!” Hazel stepped away from the wall.
“No kidding,” Leo clambered to his feet, “it's not mechanical that's for sure, maybe if we both push really hard it will just fall over?”
“I don't think that's going to work,” Hazel laughed, “but maybe…” She trailed off as she looked at the wall, lost in thought. If this want on the map then it had been put up sometime in the last week. That meant that the plaster or bricks used might still be somewhat weak. With no sun to dry the cement and the generally wet air down in the sewer. The cement would probably still be dry.
“On second thoughts let's give that a go,” Hazel stored for Leo to put his hands on the wall, “on three, one, two, three!” They both pushed with all of their might. And the wall crumbled.
“Well that wasn't so hard was it,” Leo grinned, he put the radio to his mouth, “we're through Annabeth.”
“Good,” Annabeth replied, “keep going until you reach a left turn, that's the entrance into the prison’s bilge tank, you're nearly there.”
Hey guys, so there's two more chapters until the end!!!! And then the sequel!!!!
