SIXTY ONE: NEVER AGAIN
THIRD PERSON POV
FLASHBACK
-Yokohama, Japan-
"Tonight is the big night for all the musicians in Japan out there! This is the day where all of you will witness the immaculate performances of our music prodigies skilled in piano!" The host said, and the crowd shouted as they were seated in the theater.
"Yoongi! Are you okay? You're going to do your best! I know it!" The assistant smiled as she reassured the little Yoongi, who was fiddling with his small hands.
4-year old Min Yoongi was a music prodigy ever since he moved to Japan. He was more talented than children his age, as most people say.
"Do you think Min Yoongi will be also here? I heard he won the community awards, and knowing him... he'd be in this national competition!"
"I think so, his mother taught him piano from such a young age, until she passed away in South Korea I heard!"
"That Korean kid has no match for the other Japanese prodigy, Yukiko. I heard he mastered most of Mozart's pieces at the age of 3!"
"Min Yoongi! You're next!" The woman said as she checked her clipboard, and Yoongi looked silently at his reflection the mirror. He wore a suit, it was the suit his mother gave him. But would she really be happy?
When she never brought him happiness?
"Yoongi! You should learn piano! Then you should play for your mother!" Mother used to tell him when she was alive.
Well, he loved her mother alot. So he agreed.
"You're doing it all wrong, Yoongi! Why can't you make things right?" Mother said, and father shook his head.
"Haven't I told you that your son has no talent whatsoever in piano? He even scared the cats away! Geez, and you keep pushing him to learn piano!" Father said, and mother rolled her eyes.
"And you? All you care about is money this and money that, why did you suddenly care for Yoongi?" Mother shouted, and father yelled back at her.
But Yoongi, was only two-years old. He was staring mindlessly at mother and father arguing at each other.
"If you don't master the piano, you're not having anything for food. That's a last straw!"
"Stop being such a crybaby, you're so sensitive! Why are you crying again? Do you think I'll let you go until you master Bach?"
"Stop playing the piano Yoongi, just stop it! Your mother is going to die soon, why continue?"
"You keep making mistakes, all this time I always knew you were a dumb kid, Yoongi."
"Yoongi, I'm seeing another woman, she's nicer than your mother. But she wouldn't see her since she's already dead, you know? Your mother has been sick for quite a while now."
"Yoongi? Yoongi! Time to go now," the assistant said, and Yoongi nodded before stepping towards the entrance of the stage at the side.
The judges were clapping because a performance just ended. A young man around his age walked past him as he was finished with his performance.
"Yoongi-kun, right? Why are you so stiff. Lighten up a bit, afraid of me?" The boy, named Yukiko grinned as he walked towards his teachers praising him.
But Yoongi, he wasn't afraid of him. He was afraid of something else.
His mother has been dead last year, and his father remarried a Japanese woman, that looked exactly like his mother.
He often confused her as his true mother. But still, that lingering darkness was there. She was different from her, but she always carried around something that made noises in his head grow louder.
I already blocked off most of mother's yells at me, it'll be alright. It's my first big competition in Japan.
He walked towards the judges before bowing, then proceeding towards the seat infront of the grand piano.
"Such a shame, he looks like he doesn't want to be there."
"I heard Yoongi was the reason why his old mother died, she died of stress because of him."
"And if he fails?"
As Yoongi placed his hands on the keys, his finger tapped against the white keys of the grand piano. The crowd was silent, heeding their speculations about Yoongi. He was young, very young, at the age of 4, he can't comprehend such stress.
As he played the piano, he glanced into the audience, and he made a complete pause.
His eyes stayed glued to someone familiar, someone he didn't want to see yet he missed very dearly.
A woman and a man were sitting beside each other, watching Yoongi as he looked back at them.
And then, he felt something.
An unexplainable feeling was bubbling in his chest, there was something that didn't function, and his head was blank of thought. And it felt like his fingers that were once onto the sturdy keys, fell into pieces as his hear started beating rapidly.
"Yoongi, try harder with yourself won't you?"
It was a face, he couldn't get out of his head. He was confused, whether than woman was his mother or his stepmother. He didn't know at all, and he was only a 4-year old.
"Min Yoongi, you're disqualified," a voice snapped him back to his senses as he looked into the judges eyes, they were filled with disappointment, and judgement.
"See, I told you he was scared! Yukiko will soon rule the music world!"
"*sigh* and I betted my money on him."
"What a waste of potential."
Yoongi slowly stood up, and he realized his parents weren't seated anymore, they left early, and they didn't let anyone know they were his parents.
It felt like he failed as a son, at that point.
-
"Was I good at stage too?" Yoongi asked as he looked up at his music teacher.
"Yukiko, I'm so proud of you! Look how graceful you've become!" The music teacher said as she hugged the other small boy in her arms.
"Teacher...? Was I also... good?" Yoongi asked innocently.
"Oh, Yoongi. Yes... you were fine. I guess," the music teacher said as shs glanced at Yoongi's direction, before turning towards Yukiko.
"Yoongi, come with me for a moment," his father said as he grabbed his son by the arm, bringing him outside the theater.
"Yoongi, first of all... I don't think piano is for you, and you embarrassed me and your stepmom," his father said as he stared at Yoongi.
"Starting today, I hope you try to redeem yourself. I've been thinking about it a lot right now and.... I think it's better if you leave this reputation behind," he said.
"You're joining my yakuza organization, Yoongi."
At that point, Yoongi didn't know anymore. He didn't know what he was bad at, what he was good at, he didn't wanna be anything. He just needed acceptance.
He wanted someone to tell him that he, too was doing a great job whether it be surviving or just doing small things.
He despised piano at first, but he felt like that instrument was the only one who truly wanted him, who needed him the most.
He didn't want to regret, but he was also thinking.
He regretted playing the piano because it robbed him of his childhood, but he didn't at the same time knowing he found something he felt needed to.
-Years Later-
"Namhee? What are.... you doing here?" Yoongi asked as he opened the door, that was the old warehouse where he stored an old, thrown away piano. He knew that he can only play the piano when he's in Korea, knowing his father forbade him to. Namhee was wearing a middle school uniform, because she just came out of school.
"Yoongi! I found this piano sitting here by itself! Even if it's old, it looks so cool and expensive!" Namhee smiled gleefully as she observes it.
"Well... it was supposed to be thrown away but... I still saved it," Yoongi said as he rubbed the back of his neck, and his ears turned red.
"Yoongi! You know how to play the piano? You never told me when!" Namhee said as she sat on the stool.
"If you already told me, we would've already played the piano together!" Namhee said as she smiled at him, and Yoongi diverted his gaze to the ground.
God, why is her smile so cute... I could just stare at her all day. But she might think I'm a creep.
"You... play the piano too, Namhee?" Yoongi asked and Namhee nodded before placing her hands on the white keys. And the shiny wood from the piano was reflecting from the sunset that shone through the dusty windows.
And for a few minutes, the quiet atmosphere was replaced by a melodic sound from the piano. Namhee was calmly playing the piano as Yoongi silently watched her, he felt like he wasn't hearing any music, because he was quietly staring at her.
The sun's rays were reflecting on the piano, and it included Namhee. Namhee's dark black hair was shining, and her face looked so peaceful and calm, and the way she played the keys were like a mixture of her gentle and kind personality.
Yoongi was totally infatuated with her. It felt like he was warm with her. To the point, where he felt like the hatred of his past melted completely. With her, he felt like he wanted to be something, because of her.
"So? Yoongi! I played well!" Namhee said as the music stopped, and Yoongi was snapped back to reality.
"You're so bold to evaluate your own playstyle," Yoongi sighed softly before smiling at her, before sitting down beside her.
"What's wrong with that? I like the piano, and nobody can tell me what I like and dislike," Namhee said, and Yoongi sighed.
"Namhee, do you.... think I'm a burden?" Yoongi replied and Namhee scooted closer to him before tilting her head.
"All my life... I've been a big fuck up, huh. I feel like I don't even deserve to feel anything right now," Yoongi said and Namhee sighed.
"I don't feel like... I can be good enough to anyone," Yoongi said.
"Yoongi, you're good enough!" Namhee said as she looked at him.
"Trust me, people will always be selfish when it comes to that. And they're the same people who preach about loving and telling people they're worth it," Namhee sighed.
"But Yoongi... you should also think about yourself... you've come a long way, and you're the only one who knows what you've been through. It would be right if you could also know that whatever people throw at you, you'll always end up with yourself at the end, and they'll only be there to point out your mistakes, but you're the only one who knows your achievements and happy memories," Namhee said.
"And I'm here too! I know people also need another person to be there for them. But I like you just the way you are, Yoongi! Even if you make mistakes!" Namhee said, and Yoongi broke out into a red blush as he listened to Namhee say that.
"I-I mean.... not in that way, silly," Namhee said as she turned red, and Yoongi smiled as he nodded.
"Thanks, Namhee," Yoongi said.
"You know what... I want to play the piano often again. I only play it solemnly now when no one isn't paying attention. But, I want to be able to... spend more time with you, because you love pianos," Yoongi smiled.
"Really? I always thought I was pretty boring. But I'll always have your back, and not only your back, I'll always have everything for you, you got this Yoongi! I believe in you!" Namhee said cheekily and Yoongi turned redder.
He loved pianos, and he loved her.
If only he knew, that she loved him too.
