Someone Who's Not Me
Raven smiled at her mom as she walked into the kitchen. "How was school?" She asked warmly. "Good." Raven lied. "I have a surprise for you!" Her mom squealed. Raven's smile grew, but she knew not to get her hopes up. Surprises aren't always good. "In one week, we're going to see your father!" Her eyes widened with disbelief. "Really? But, we only get to go once a year! And we already went!" Raven protested, sure that this was some cruel joke. "Well, it gets better. There is evidence that somebody else was at the scene.... that night." Her mothers excited face seemed to become tired with the mention of that night. "So.. they might be able to prove that it wasn't him?" Raven asked with bewilderment etched on her face. Her mother nodded.
Raven's father had been convicted of the murder of a young woman. His good-natured heart and friendly, innovative mind proved to anyone who knew him personally he was innocent. But the evidence spun the wheel to the other side. It was his student, Raven's father was a teacher. He was meeting her at the library for a tutoring session. That night, she turned up dead. And Raven's dad, Brandon, was sent to prison for first degree murder. Thankfully, he was not charged with the death penalty, but instead life imprisonment.
"They will find the evidence.. they will prove it wasn't him!" I grinned. "And he'll be released!" My mother beamed. For the rest of the day, Raven couldn't stop smiling. She whipped out her phone and began texting her best friend. Her text read: "Eek! My dad is finally going to be proved innocent! I'll have my dad back!" Raven put her phone down, and got ready for bed, putting an over-sized batman t-shirt and some tiny black shorts for pajamas. As she laid her head on the pillow, she began wondering how it would feel to have her father's arms wrap around her.. one more time.
When she woke up the next morning, she felt refreshed, and ready to go. She smiled as she walked through school. "Rave! What do you look so happy about?" Ash asked when she saw her. "You didn't get my text?" Raven asked. Ash pulled out her cell phone, revealing no text messages from Raven. "Then who did I..." The entire hallway quieted down, as it did every morning this time. Chris walked through the halls. His pearly white teeth, swept back hair, and bronze skin was the center of everyone's attention. Girls gawked at him left and right, and Raven fell silent. But the breath seemed to have been taken from her lungs when he stopped in front of her. "Congrats about your dad." He whispered smoothly, before continuing to walk. The color drained from her face. She immediately pulled her phone out, to confirm that she accidentally texted him, instead of Ash. She began typing at lightening speed, and he replied quickly.
"Sorry, wrong number!!"
"I know."
After Chris left, Raven turned to Ash. "I accidentally sent it to him!" She cried. "What did it say?" Ash asked calmly. "It said, um, my dad is gonna be proved innocent.. and that I was gonna have him back.." She mumbled with a red face. "And what did he say? I couldn't hear." Ash interrogated. "He said congrats about my dad." Raven replied. "AHHHHHH!" Ash screeched. She was cut short when Lisa walked up, her cat eyes narrowed. "WHAT," She said sharply, "WAS THAT ALL ABOUT?" All eyes were on me. I scanned the area. All eyes were on me. "That, was Chris talking to Raven. I thought you would have noticed, considering how much you wish Chris was shallow enough to date you." A small, squeaky voice said. My head jerked around to see James, with his notebook. "Get back to writing superhero comic books in your stupid notebook, twerp!" Lisa hissed, venom dripping from her lips. James's cheeks were bright red, and he opened his notebook and scribbled away. "No.." I said weakly. I cleared my throat. "No," This time I sounded longer. "James is right!" "Oh, go kill yourself, you stupid little brat." Flames licked my throat, but I barely noticed the sting. " If I wanted to kill myself, I would jump from your ego, down to your IQ." Lisa gasped, and strut off. Everyone gaped at her, and she realized what just happened. She is going to die. Well, she would have, if there wasn't another scream to distract everybody.
Maybe... somebody else was going to die. Someone who's not me.
