16 [touch]
San whistles and Wooyoung scoffs at Yunho's choice of words, while Byul digs her fingers into her ears to make sure she's hearing him correctly.
"I'm sorry what?"
Still thinking there's nothing wrong with what he's saying, he repeats it naively, "I said, then land in my arms. We don't have all day and it's just quicker for you to jump and I catch you."
"I don't trust you. You hate me and you're probably going to step away then let me fall and break my bones."
Yunho pauses. "I don't hate you." Exasperated, he adds, "I won't do something stupid, just lower yourself down and let me help you. You're wasting everyone's time."
"Oh now I'm wasting everyone's time when I just risked my life trying to avoid that Alexander or whatever-his-name-is guy." She's visibly upset.
"Isn't this the start of every romantic drama where the main girl and guy hate each other with their whole hearts but fall for each other anyway in the end?" Wooyoung asks San. "Watching a drama while lying down on the floor's fun. We should do this more often."
"The next thing we know they're already professing their love for each other and exchanging vows. I don't care but I'm going to be the best man."
"Shut up both of you," Yunho grumbles before turning back to look at Byul. "Look, I won't let you drop to the floor. I promise."
"Aww," both of them coo.
"If you break your promise I'll make sure you won't hear the end of it," she threatens. "You were so nice when you invited me into the cafe and now you're treating me like I deliberately ruined my own life."
His face remains placid, letting Byul's words hang in the air as he gestures impatiently to her, asking her to come down this instant. Hesitantly, she turns back into the vent, awkwardly shifting her body so that her legs dangle from the tight space. She pushes herself off the slick surface, the silk pajamas letting her slide with ease.
She squeezes her body through the opening slowly, and she makes sure that she has one arm, despite being bandaged, holding on to the edge before confirming that he's indeed at the same spot. He is unmoving, his arms outstretched like he's about to start singing in a choir with some practiced gestures.
Putting her trust fully into a guy she just met, she lets go of the edge and lets herself go through the 2.7m drop. He does catch her but the feeling is short-lived as the moment she lands in his arms, he throws her onto Wooyoung's bed and walks away, picking up the wastebasket on his way out.
She lands like a sack of potatoes on the super-single mattress covered with a plain royal purple bedsheet, her head hitting the soft pillow and her arms smack against the headboard. She grits her teeth, fuming with anger as she sits upright and fixes her clothes.
Wooyoung and San immediately sit upright too, shifting their gazes back and forth between two of them.
"You-" she manages.
"Before you say anything, I didn't break my promise; I didn't drop you to the floor."
He closes the door, leaving Byul slacked-jaw with his conclusion. He meets Mingi on the way outside, looking slightly curious on what happened because he heard a commotion from inside the room.
"What just happened?"
"It was exhausting," Yunho says, without even answering his question.
"What... was?" he narrows his eyes, looking at him suspiciously.
"Go and see for yourself."
He walks away, and Mingi cautiously opens the door, peeking through the crack as he discerns the situation inside. Byul is lying down on the mattress, kicking her legs upwards, as if she's angry and trying with all her might to kick the imaginary person. Wooyoung and San are sitting on the floor, prodding each other as they gesture towards her.
Mingi lets out a small scream before rushing over to Byul, putting out his arms and standing with his back to her protectively. "What did you guys do in this sacred household? Oh dear, Byul are you okay?" He turns back to the two on the floor, who are scrambling to get up after getting back their strength. "What did you do to her?"
"We didn't do anything to her," San frowns.
"You're right, they didn't. That Yunho did," she says vaguely, causing Mingi to gasp as he whips his head around.
"That good guy Yunho did something inappropriate to you? I swear-" He doesn't finish his sentence as he storms out of the room, stealing the stack of papers from Wooyoung's desk and rolling it to make it as a weapon.
"Wait what do you mean inappropriate-" she voices out before realizing her mistake.
"Song Mingi!" Wooyoung calls out but the man with the said name has already glided down the stairs, his destination being Yunho's room.
The three of them look at each other with late realization before they make a beeline for the door, squeezing through to follow the hacker.
Mingi makes sure to knock on Yunho's door first but the moment the older guy swings the door opens he rears his hand back and slams the rolled paper onto Yunho's head. Taken by surprise, the latter raises his arms a little bit too late so he receives the knock on his head and he stumbles backwards but steadies himself against his built-in wardrobe.
"Wait Mingi-" Another slam on his head. "-why are you-" His torso becomes the target next. "-hitting me-" A hit to his legs. "-stop it-" Another slap on his cheek before he loses his balance and falls to the ground. "Song Mingi!" he finally gets to say, but it doesn't come with multiple rolled paper attacks to his body.
After having enough of the unexplained attacks, he rolls to the side before kicking the papers out of Mingi's hand and slamming his body onto the carpeted floor, chest first. He pins his hand down with his legs before pulling it back so that Mingi cannot use his hand to attack him anymore. He rests his weight against the younger one, immobilizing him. The latter taps a hand on the ground, admitting defeat. He lets him go, but not without making sure the papers are far away from him.
"What was that for?" he demands.
"That was for touching Byul inappropriately! Jeong Yunho, you have a 6-year-old daughter and this is how you behave? I'm so disappointed in you when I thought that you were a good guy!" His face shows clear disappointment and rage at the thought of his hands touching the innocent girl. "We never raised you to be a stinking bag of trash!"
"I- wha-" Yunho says dumbly. "Inappropriately? I just helped her to get down and I-" he pauses to think of how it would sound if he knows he literally threw her away, "-lowered her onto the bed. Then I left. I did not touch her 'inappropriately'." He does quotation marks as he pushes his lower lip outwards. "You're making me sad with all these false accusations."
"So you didn't actually touch her inappropriately?"
"Why would I do that?" he says, offended."I did not."
"He did not," came Byul's voice from the door, with Wooyoung and San peering over her shoulders. "I was just flustered but he didn't do anything to me."
"Oh," Mingi says simply, righting himself up. "You could have said it sooner before I beat him up."
"You literally just smacked me with rolled papers. There isn't even any damage done besides my torn pride."
"For the sake of this story, let's just assume I beat you up pretty badly okay?" Mingi gives a death threat with his eyes as he smiles.
"How are we even supposed to explain what happened when you just went out of the room like a hurricane?"
"Then why are you on the bed, looking angry and kicking some apparition? I thought you were demonstrating how you're going to beat up Yunho for doing... something to you."
Byul shifts her eyes to Yunho, who shoves his hands in his pockets and lifts up his eyebrows, as if daring her to expose him. "I was just doing some leg exercises because they're feeling numb after being cramped up in the small space," she says smoothly. "Yunho helped me get down and he put me on the bed gently."
San and Wooyoung snort at this but Mingi doesn't catch it.
Mingi looks visibly relieved, like a physical burden has just been lifted off his shoulders. "That's so nice to hear. I was so angry and repulsed at the thought of Yunho being the guy I never thought he would be. I was already thinking on how Hwayoung would live on without a father when he gets locked up."
"Locked... up..." Yunho says in disbelief. "You really do look into the far future, don't you?"
"We need to plan our future, Yunho. Hwayoung needs to go to school and then university. Ain't nothing wrong with that." Mingi slaps his back with too much vigour that he almost loses his balance again. He puts his palms together and utters, "Now that's everything settled, Wooyoung and San, it's time to get to work. San, you'll be working with me. Wooyoung, Yeosang's waiting for you."
"Ugh," Wooyoung groans. "Why am I with Yeosang again?"
"No complaints, Hongjoong put you together with him after that hair-grabbing fiesta yesterday. Both of you need to learn how to live together without spitting at each other every minute or so. Our captain will be watching the two of you during this mission."
"We're not 5!"
"Yeah, but you act like one. Now go." He does a sweeping motion. "The meeting will happen at 12 noon, and you have to be assembled before that." He shoves Wooyoung towards the stairs, before putting an arm around San. "Now San, we'll have to get ready too. Let's go. Byul, we'll be waiting for you at the living room downstairs. Hope you're ready, because we're about to break into your house and steal-" he corrects himself, "-take your stuff here. You're about to become a new person."
"Joy, I get another new identity," Byul remarks, to which Yunho lifts up an eyebrow.
"Another new identity?" he whispers to her, but she brushes it away.
"I meant 'a new identity'. Jeez, I'm sorry I don't have the best language skills."
"Sure," he relents but keeps his stare lingering on her.
As Mingi and San leave them alone in the room, he still hasn't torn his attention from her. She's subconsciously gripping her bandaged arms as she stares at her feet as they shuffle nervously.
He takes a seat on the bed, putting his palms behind him and leaning backwards. "Are you planning to stay here longer and make the others get the wrong idea too?"
"That hurt, you know. Could have been gentler."
There's a slight change in his eyes as he mumbles, "Sorry."
"What? I can't hear you."
"I'm sorry," he repeats, albeit slowly. "I didn't want to be- you know, touching a stranger for too long. You already look like you're uncomfortable when I offered to help you come down."
"Uh one," she puts up a finger, "that doesn't warrant the fact that you could just throw me like I'm a potato without warning, and even more when I'm injured. Like maybe okay, I am but a potato has feelings too."
She puts up another finger, "Two, it's not that I'm uncomfortable but you're giving me all the vibes that you're going to let me die as soon as I fall. No offense."
Then she lifts up another finger, "Three, I know that we're thrown into this forced camaraderie when none of us asked for it, but I have no ill intention towards your daughter. If you want me to stay away from her, then I'll gladly do so. I'll pretend I don't see her even when she's literally right in front of me."
He chuckles at her proposal of ignoring Hwayoung but quickly masks it by clearing his throat. He purses his lips and proceeds to cross his arms.
"I just don't want my daughter to get hurt; no one wants their child to get hurt." He takes a moment to form the next sentence, but figures it's better to let it go unsaid.
"I know what you're going to say," she huffs. "You're going to say that I don't know how it feels like because I don't have a child on my own. Mind you, I may not be married but I will someday, and I will have a child." She shrugs. "Well... considering if anyone would want me. I mean," she hurriedly adds, "that's not my point. What I'm saying is I understand that feeling. Of course you wouldn't want someone you treasure to be hurt."
Yunho doesn't hold back his laughter this time around, managing a breathy laughter as he covers his mouth. "Looks like you need a lot of training if you want to stick around with us, Ms. Han."
"What do you mean?"
"You're bad at reading body language and you're totally not a mind reader. Whatever you said is not what I wanted to say."
"Then what was it that you wanted to say?"
"I'm being cautious around you because one," he copies Byul's motions, "we're the reason your life has been ruined yet you're so... accepting. Two, I still find you to be a little bit suspicious but I want to believe that you're just a person who really happened to stumble upon our cafe on a bad day."
"And three?" she cuts him off.
"Three," he looks at her with a soft glow in his eyes, "I don't want you to get hurt."
