"I switched the cameras off; bring her out of the store," Mingi announces from the main area of the cafe as he types something away on his laptop. "We don't have much time before they notice something's amiss. We have less than..." he consults the clock, "...5 minutes."
After getting the confirmation from him, Seonghwa steps into the store, putting out his arms in defence, trying to fix his body language to show that he doesn't mean any harm. The trail of blood leads to her in the corner, unscathed. He looks at the small uncapped bottle filled with fake blood on the floor beside her. There is a lot of explanation to do to her so he crouches a few feet away from her, trying to reason it out.
"Yeosang didn't touch you, did he?"
She shakes her head, gesturing to the fake blood beside her.
"Please take that as we truly mean no harm to you. I know you're scared and confused; we will give you all the explanation that we should but first, you need to follow us upstairs. We don't have much time before Mingi has to switch back on the cameras at the cafe."
Her whole body is shaking but she doesn't give any more reaction.
"Please believe us this one time, we meant no harm to you. If..." he changes the direction of his approach, "...we have a child upstairs. You can stay with her if that makes you feel safer. We need to get you away from the cameras first, then we will explain."
"I can't walk properly," she merely replies, stretching out her legs. "I- I hurt them again when I was running away from... Yeosang."
"I can uh-" he does a gesture to show that he can carry her up the stairs, but he's too shy to verbalize it. They are the reason she's hurt, they are the reason she got caught in this mess, yet she still shows a little bit of trust in them. Somehow, that made him feel a little bit relieved. "If you would let me."
"Uh, sure."
He doesn't waste anymore time as he slides his arms under her knees and behind her back, lifting her up with ease. She looks away, feeling stripped now that he's too close for comfort. He only looks straight ahead and she looks away, avoiding any moments that could make the situation awkward. They step out to find Mingi waiting at one corner in front of his laptop, while Hongjoong, Yunho and Yeosang have gone upstairs. Wooyoung, San and Jongho remain downstairs, regarding the pair quietly.
Seonghwa slightly nods to Mingi, and he carries her up the stairs to punch in the code, before putting her down softly on the sofa across another one where the three men are already waiting for them. He joins them, keeping a distance from her because they know they're not making it any better for her. Too much of a mess have been done, but they have no way of turning it back.
"Who are you?" she asks first, surprising the four as she slowly sits against the sofa, moving her bandaged arms carefully.
Yunho nudges Hongjoong, prompting him to answer. He blinks once before saying, "We do run the cafe-" She gives him the look. "-but under that we have other jobs."
"A gang? Or assassins?"
"We're not just that. We're hired 'couriers'," he says while putting up quotation marks. "We get requests from people to do all kinds of jobs."
"So you do kill people," she snaps. "But why won't you kill me? And what was that back at the cafe?"
He hesitates. "Yes, but we have our own principles. We don't simply kill anyone. The reason why we had to bring you back here was because we needed to sort things out. The cafe is full of cameras, full of people watching."
"You mean those who you called monsters?"
Something in his eyes shift and he darts his eyes away, like he's hiding something. She notices, but decides to deal with it later.
He plays around with his fingers, pressing his lips together as he tries his best to answer truthfully. "It depends whether you want to believe us or not, but we're not at the top." He points a finger upwards, "Above us there are... bigger people. That's why we're stuck here doing this job and just like you, we have a debt to pay. They trust us enough to only put the cameras at the cafe, so that was why whatever happened back in the cafe..."
"It was all an act," she helps to finish his sentence. "Up until the fake blood and you pretending that you were going to kill me." She turns to Yeosang, whose expression bears guilt.
"Through the cameras they would know that by the looks of it, you have already found out about our identities. To them, that's the biggest sin anyone could have for both parties. Once they know that our identities have been compromised, they will hunt you down without even taking into account whether it was your fault or you found it out by accident. Their rule is that anyone who knows the secret needs to be eliminated, and then they'll get rid of us next. But if we do it on our own, they'll spare our lives and pretend like nothing ever happened."
"So to them who were watching through the cameras... you had gotten rid of me. You had killed me."
He nods. "There are two cameras at the main area at the cafe, one at the hallway leading to the store but none in the store. We had to keep up all the act until we could drive you back into the store. We had to make it believable. We needed to show them that we were fighting over what to do with you, and that there was some who would gladly kill you. If they see us fighting over this, they won't be suspicious. They would be if all of us are on the same side."
"All of you really made that up while I was running for my life- you really prepared everything in a short time?" she asks, wary. She's defensive, but at the same time she finds it hard not to believe them. Her stupid guts are telling her they're not a threat when they literally just had a debate on whether to take her in or kill her. Whether it's an act or not, it doesn't change who they really are.
"Ms. Han, our lives involve jobs that require a short time of improvisation or prompt acting. Doing something like this is not something hard for us. Even the fake blood is the excess of what we had used during one of our jobs."
"Which could also mean that every single one of you," she points an accusing finger, although it looks less menacing because it's still shaky, "is currently trying to fool me and I'm stupid to believe you. Which I know I am, the moment I stepped into the cafe."
"We can barely prove it to you right now, but until tomorrow we'd hope you believe us when we say that we don't want to kill you as much as we don't want to get ourselves killed. Tomorrow there will be someone sent from there to check up on us first thing in the morning, confirm with us that we have gotten rid of you. If they're satisfied, they'll leave us alone like they always do. That's our job to make sure they believe we had killed you for knowing about what we really do. You can observe that and you can make your judgement."
"Is this what you do to the others who find out about your identities; you help them? And where are they now?"
"You are the first one," Yunho interrupts. "We never had our identities compromised before this because we were always careful. But," he starts to look slightly annoyed, "our leader was so ecstatic because we finally got a request after a long dry period, that he announced it to the whole cafe."
Hongjoong clears his throat and scratches at the skin under his chin, avoiding the stares of the others to him.
"He's... your leader..." she says stupidly. "Hard to believe."
"I agree with you, it's hard to believe for me too," Yeosang joins in. "I never thought he'd be the reason for something so stupid."
"So basically what you're saying is 'I'm sorry but your whole life is over because our leader has a big mouth'?"
"Essentially, yes," Yeosang replies. "You must be pissed."
"Understatement. Livid. I was just trying to get a cup of coffee but I ended up getting involved with your shit. Even my whole life is not as chaotic as this."
"I like her already, can we have her on our team?" he turns to the other three, his eyes gleaming. "Feels like I can click with her right away."
"Kang Yeosang, her life is at stake and you want her on our team."
"Yeah, and whose fault was it?"
"I prayed every day for something in my life to change, for something big to happen. I wanted to be rich and not have to worry about working a day in my life. I did not ask to be involved with a gang that has a strawberry as their leader."
"We're not a gang-" Hongjoong snaps, "and I'm not a strawberry."
Seonghwa and Yunho put their hands to their mouths, struggling to suppress laughter. The mood was sombre but it's tilting due to her attitude; she's taking it better than what they expected. Right now Hongjoong looks like an older brother bickering with his younger sister, but the sister is winning and he has to stick around anyway.
"You know what, I love her. Now can we please get her on our team? She's both fearless and sassy even when her life is on the line. Perfect addition to our team."
"You just said we don't have liberty to be taking in another person downstairs."
"Honey, that's called acting. We all agreed that whatever we said downstairs is invalid."
"If you weren't scared then why did you run and scream?"
"I was. But after witnessing both of you fighting over trying to be a favourite uncle and hair, I now know that I've seen everything. All of you aren't normal."
Yeosang shrugs. "Can't argue with that. We're far from normal."
"Your life is at stake, but why are you so nonchalant about this?" Seonghwa creases his forehead, slightly amused by her way of accepting it. They had thought it would require them additional plans to be able to convince her, yet right now it's like she's taking the game ahead by flustering them. "You should be... I don't know. Running around trying to find a way to escape or... throwing objects randomly at us so you can like, save yourself. You should be mad at us. We can kill you-" They glare at him and he quickly adds, "-not that we will, but you're talking to us like you're in a coffee shop."
"Technically we are."
"Shut up, Yeosang."
"I should, but where would I go? I'm pretty sure you've had all my details and know that I've never succeded in any single job interview. I'm currently broke, about to be kicked out of the flat, no one to turn to and drowning in debt. I don't even know how I can live on now that I've failed yet another one; it can't get any worse than this. Now that I think about it, a 100 grand doesn't sound too bad."
"Are you actually offering yourself to be a part of our team? Us who almost got you killed because Hongjoong was an idiot?"
"Stop calling me an idiot, have some respect." He stands up, flicks a finger to Yunho's head before turning to her, "Ms. Han, doing this job is not something you can take lightly. We agreed that whatever choice we had to vote for during the act in the cafe were invalid. We never planned to either take you in or even kill you. We trained for years before we picked up this job. Not to mention that you're supposed to be dead."
"All the more reason to take me in. Now that you've involved me in this mess, what if they decided to hunt me down again and find out that you never actually killed me or even touched me? You can't just let me go like that. You have to take responsibility."
Yeosang snaps his fingers and points at her, "She's got a point and she's smart. Why don't we just take her in?"
Seonghwa clamps a hand over Yeosang's mouth to shush him but pulls away with a disgusted face when the younger licks his hand. He wipes it against his pants. "Ms. Han, we will take responsibility for what we did to you. You need to give us some time to deal with the person they'll send our way tomorrow, and then we'll help you."
She stands up to level her eyes with Hongjoong, ignoring the pain on the soles of her feet. "You single-handedly ruined my life because you couldn't wait until it's clear before you announced it to the whole cafe. You only spared my life because you're scared they'll go for you next. You treated my life like it's something unimportant when I'll probably be living my whole life being scared they'll hunt me down in the future. You made me get involved with something so... dark and twisted when I didn't even ask to. You're trying to deal with me like I'm an object that you can throw away once I'm no longer your concern."
He bites the inside of his cheek, finding it hard to argue against her points. She is speaking nothing but the truth. He's frustrated because he knows whatever choice he makes, there will be someone who loses. He has to take responsibility for both his boys' and the girl's lives.
"Dad?" a small voice speaks up, startling all of them. They were too deep in their discussion they hadn't heard Hwayoung's bedroom door opening, a sleepy Hwayoung walking out. She rubs her eyes with one hand and holds a plushie that San had given her for her 5th birthday with the other.
Yunho rushes to her side, taking her hands in his huge ones. "Did we wake you up honey? I'm sorry, I'll tuck you back into bed."
She shakes her head, her voice a drawl. "I had a nightmare and I'm scared. I wanted to find you." She shifts her eyes to the stranger at the living room. "Who is she?"
Something lights up on top of Hongjoong's head as he looks at Hwayoung then to Byul. A mischiveous smile creeps up on his face as he thinks about it; he might have just found a solution on how he can keep Byul around without raising any suspicions.
"Hwayoung, say hello to your new nanny."
Byul's eyes bulge as she hears his announcement, and it seems that even the rest of them are shocked over his sudden plan.
"Excuse me, a what now?"
