Chapter 22

I wish I was special

"Guys! Peter was still sleeping. I found him," the recognizable voice of Padfoot called out.

Peter opened his eyes quickly, even though he was extremely tired.

He had fallen asleep after a long night of partying. They had had a Bachelor's party for James and it was as chaotic as anyone would assume.

At one point everyone had forgotten him, so he just turned into a rat and curled away from the world.

He had not been able to sleep very well because of the thoughts that his friends didn't care about him. But his friends had been looking for him. Which meant maybe they cared about him.

Moony raised an eyebrow, "When did we lose him? How long has he been here? Why is he a rat?"

Maybe they didn't really care that much. Maybe they only cared because they needed to find him for the wedding. That was more realistic. More probable. He did not matter to them. He did not matter to anyone. No one cared about him until they needed him.

He was alone in this world, with no friends. No one to care about him. No one to genuinely worry about him. No one to care if he was alright instead of caring that a suit wearer was alright. There was a difference.

"Shit happens," Sirius shrugged.

Moony sighed, "Thanks, that clears up everything. For fucks sake, Peter turn human and get dressed. Sirius go make sure James stops freaking the fuck out."

Padfoot leaned in to kiss Moony's cheek but Remus simply turned away and put his hand out to prevent any further advances.

Peter was a bit confused at that. He had thought everything was okay with their relationship but maybe it was not

It was a realization that perhaps he wasn't as involved in their lives as he used to be, and that scared him. He knew everything when they all lived together but now it seemed like he knew nothing.

His friends were changing, evolving, becoming different people. Yet he was the same old Peter Pettigrew who would never be anything.

Perhaps it was because he was a tagalong. He had never had a life of his own, always following around people, so naturally he wouldn't be able to get one now.

He just switched out from who he was following. Not becoming his own person. Just becoming dependent on Mary instead of the Marauders.

"Don't blow me off like that," Sirius grumbled before leaving the room.

Moony rolled his eyes before crouching down to Peter's level.

The sound of bones crackling as he did so made a chill run down his spine. This was an occurrence that was happening more and more.

"Can you switch back?" Moony raised an eyebrow, looking tired of being awake and dealing with Peter.

The rat squeaked once.

They had set up a system to communicate with each other when they were in their Animagus forms. One noise was yes, two noises were no, and three noises were fuck off.

Remus sighed, "Then do it."

He squeaked twice, unsure of why he did so. He knew he did not exactly want to be human right now but he didn't ever rebel against his friends. He didn't want to make them upset at him after all.

"Just get it together man. We need to support James. Life is tough, but you need to get your shit together," Remus muttered.

He then left the room, tossing the tuxedo onto a nearby table.

Peter transformed and got dressed.

Remus was mad at him, was tired of him. Everyone was tired of Peter. No one wanted him around, no one cared. They just wanted him to lie about how he was doing and attend a wedding.

So that's what he did.
