18. Elmore

Start the song. It's Baby Teeth by Flower Face.

Josh woke up with one of the most debilitating hangovers of his life. He grumbled when he heard his phone ringing. His hand reached out for where he kept it on the table by his bed, but it wasn't there. After a moment of distracted fumbling, he found it in the pocket of the jeans he was still wearing.

"What?" He grumbled irritably into the phone.

He heard his dad chuckle. "Hungover?"

Josh groaned in response, making his dad laugh. As annoying as that was, Josh smiled slightly at the sound.

"What'd you drink?" His dad asked, as was their routine.

"Don't remember," Josh mumbled.

"Drugs?"

"Don't remember?"

"Sex?"

"What the fuck do you think?" Josh snapped grumpily.

His father chuckled. "Okay, bud. You get some sleep. I'm takin' another shift, so I ain't gonna be home 'til this afternoon. I can come home if you need me to though."

"I'm fine," Josh grumbled, rolling over lazily.

Surprisingly, the other side of his bed was warm, and the sheets were pulled down like someone else had been there. He blinked tiredly, opening his eyes. Some girl's jeans were on the floor, and her shirt was too. Josh raised an eyebrow.

"Dad, I gotta go," Josh said distractedly.

"Alright, bud. Take care of yourself. I love you," Officer Dun said warmly.

Josh hung up, dropping his phone on his bed as he stood up. His head was killing him, but curiosity won out as he left his room. In a trailer like Josh's, there weren't many places a girl could run off to, so Josh found her pretty easy.

Ashley was sitting on the couch in one of Josh's shirts, her eyes staring blankly at the wall as she chewed at her thumb nail. She didn't seem aware of Josh as he found aspirin in the bathroom before going into the kitchen and making coffee. He didn't say anything to her, silently trying to assess if she was on drugs or something. It wasn't until he set a cup of coffee down in front of her that she snapped out of her trance.

"Hey," she practically whispered.

Josh raised an eyebrow as he sat next to her, taking a sip of his own coffee. "Are you on drugs?" Josh asked, deciding he wouldn't be able to figure it out on his own, so he might as well ask.

Instantly, Ashley's eyes widened. "What?"

"You've been staring at the wall for twenty minutes," Josh told her.

She blinked, still looking out of it when she glanced at the wall and back to Josh. Something seemed to click for her then. "You don't remember," she whispered.

"Remember what?" Josh asked calmly.

Tears gathered in Ashley's eyes, making Josh instantly less calm. What happened? Did he do something? Did he hurt somebody? Did he hurt her?

"You, uh, you didn't...." She trailed off, wiping at the tear that rolled down her cheek. Every muscle in Josh's body was tense when she let out a sob. "You didn't tell me you weren't going to...but you still didn't...and I'm scared because...and...."

Ashley was properly crying now, unable to get out the words Josh needed her to tell him. "Ashley, what did I do?" He asked her quietly, feeling completely unprepared for whatever the answer could be.

"Are you gonna leave if I'm-" She sobbed again. "I don't wanna be my mom."

Josh was getting frustrated. He had no idea what was going on. "Ashley, what did I do?" He asked again, more firmly this time.

"I asked if you were too drunk, and you lied," Ashley sobbed out, pulling her knees up to her chest and hugging them. "You were so drunk, and I didn't realize. I thought you.... You've always-" She sobbed again.

A sick feeling was clawing its way into Josh's stomach. Had he hurt her? Had he been drunk enough to.... He couldn't even think about that. He just needed her to tell him. What did he do to her?

"Ashley, look at me," Josh said carefully, setting his cup down with shaky hands. She was trembling when she met his gaze with swollen eyes. He was scared that she'd shatter if he touched her, so his hands balled up into fists in his lap instead. "Did I hurt you?"

She shook her head, and Josh felt extremely relieved when she climbed into his lap, resting her head against his shoulder as she continued to cry. "No. No. You'd never hurt me. I know that. You just-Josh, I thought you had one, but you didn't. You didn't tell me. I didn't know until you-"

"Had one what?" He asked her, wrapping his arms around her, mostly to feel like he was doing something.

Ashley sobbed. "A condom. I thought you had one, but you used it with those skanks you slept with before you came and found me. I didn't know you didn't have one until you came, and now I'm-"

Josh's chest felt tight, and his stomach ached as Ashley completely fell apart in his lap. He always used condoms. Always. How could he have been that stupid? He'd fucked up worse than ever before, and now he had to fix it, but he didn't really know how.

Josh separated himself from the anger rising inside of him as he thought about it logically. His dad had been his age when Josh was born. He'd done okay. Besides, things were different now. All he had to do was get Ashley to calm down, take her to get a morning after pill, and wait it out. Obviously, they couldn't get her one in Autauga County. They had to go outside of his dad's jurisdiction so the word wouldn't get back to him. They'd have to go to Elmore.

"Hey, stop crying. We can fix this," Josh told Ashley calmly. "I'm gonna shower. Go get dressed."

Ashley sniffled, sitting back to look at him in confusion. "What?"

"I've got a plan. Don't worry. I'll take care of it. Just go get dressed. Do you want me to take you home so you can get ready before we go?"

"Go where?" She asked quietly.

"Elmore," Josh explained.

Ashley looked confused, but was clearly deciding to trust Josh on this. She nodded, climbing out of his lap.

"Can I still wear your shirt?" She asked quietly, sniffling as she twisted the hem of it with her shaky fingers.

It was an Alabama State shirt, so Josh hesitated, but he figured he owed her. "Yeah, okay."

Ashley beamed, grabbing Josh's face and kissing him before he could stand up. Thankfully, she was too busy kissing him to realize he rolled his eyes when she climbed into his lap again. She broke the kiss then to look at him seriously.

"If your plan doesn't work, and I wind up pregnant, are you gonna leave?" She asked quietly.

"You wouldn't just say it was Brendon's?" Josh asked with a smirk.

Ashley blushed, lightly nudging her nose against his before smiling and shaking her head. "No. He's immature, and I know he'd leave me. Besides," she soothed her fingers through his hair, "there's no way our baby wouldn't be some curly-headed little thing. Brendon would know."

Josh rolled his eyes, making her squeak and giggle when he shoved her out of his lap and stood up. "Fuck you," he laughed out. "Go get dressed."

She laughed, sitting back up on the couch and pushing her wild hair off of her forehead. She folded her arms and laid them on the back of the couch as he walked down the hall.

"Hey," she said quietly.

"What?" He asked.

"Why aren't you scared?" She asked curiously.

He sighed and turned back around to look at her. Her chin rested atop her folded arms, and she looked scared again.

"We're gonna take care if it, and if you do wind up pregnant, we'll deal with that too. No big deal," Josh replied simply.

Ashley let out a shaky sigh before climbing off of the couch and padding over to him. She wrapped her arms around his waist and buried her face against his chest. He rolled his eyes, but wrapped his arms around her shoulders anyways.

"Can I shower with you?" She asked against his shirt.

"You hair's curly," Josh replied.

"What?" She asked, looking up at him in confusion.

"It wasn't yesterday. You already showered," he explained.

Ashley sighed, hugging him tighter, much to his annoyance. "I showered when we got here last night, but I want to be with you. You're calm, which makes me feel calm, but I think I'll panic if I can't see you. Let me shower with you," she whispered.

Since he figured he owed her after last night, Josh picked Ashley up and carried her to the bathroom, making her laugh. She buried her face against his neck, kissing the skin there. Josh set her down on top of the sink before going over to the shower and turning it on.

"You're nicer than you want people to believe," Ashley told Josh as she pulled her borrowed shirt over her head.

Josh ignored her, simply stripping out of his clothes while the water heated up. His head was killing him, and he wanted more than anything to just sleep this hangover off. That wasn't an option though. He made this mess, and now he had to clean it up.

When he climbed into the shower, Ashley followed him in. He was annoyed when she insisted on washing his hair, but he knew he wasn't in a position to complain, so he just stood still and let her do whatever she wanted. He had to bend down a little so she could reach properly, but he didn't complain. He owed her that much.

"You're still not worried?"Ashley asked quietly while Josh rinsed the suds out of his hair beneath the shower head.

"Nope," he replied simply.

Ashley smiled slightly. "You told me I'm your best friend last night."

"I lied."

Ashley was quiet for the rest of the shower, washing the rest of Josh in silence. By the time they'd climbed into the truck, driven to her house, allowed time for her to get changed, and started the drive to Elmore, Josh was convinced she wasn't really Ashley. She was too quiet and too small. Her knees remained tucked against her chest with her arms wrapped firmly around them. She kept resting her head against the glass on the window and then changing her mind.

Josh decided to chalk it up to Ashley just being scared he might have knocked her up. It was stupid to worry about that when Josh had clearly already done a good job of raising Abbie and he was driving her to get a pill that would substantially decrease their odds of becoming teenage parents, but he kept his mouth shut. He just let Ashley control the radio and kept his eyes on the road. He was too hungover for conversation anyways.

He'd clean up this mess, but he wouldn't stop Ashley from laying in it for a while if she was weak enough to need to. He just hoped she knew that she was the only one who was going to be a little bitch about this, and Josh wasn't going to coddle her for very long. He was already getting annoyed with her shaky hands and worried glances.

After a couple of minutes, Ashley unbuckled her seatbelt and scooted into the middle seat, buckling in there. She laid her head on his shoulder and wrapped both of her arms around the one he was using to shift gears. She closed her eyes and let out a soft breath.

"I was too scared to sleep last night," she said quietly. "I don't feel as scared right now."

"Okay," Josh replied, not really sure why she thought he'd care.

She smiled lightly as she relaxed into his side. "Thanks for not being scared."

"That ain't really my doing," he replied as he turned onto the highway.

He felt her kiss his shoulder. "Well, thanks anyways."

"Whatever," he mumbled.

She was still smiling slightly when she fell asleep, breathing evenly with her head still resting on his shoulder. Josh liked her best when she was sleeping. She shut up when she was asleep. If he was being honest though, there was something satisfying about seeing her in his Alabama State shirt with her hair a wild mess of blue curls. It reminded him of sitting in front of the school eating cherry poptarts while they waited for their parents to pick them up. Something about seeing her like this made him feel like Brendon had never taken her away from him to begin with.
