Chapter 8 - Nicolas

It had been a few hours since everyone had left and it was near lunch time. Noah had taken over the television to play Mario Brothers while my mother was out in the garden weeding and our father in his office working. Me on the other hand, well, I was up in my room just looking at the ceiling out of boredom. There were a few pieces of printer paper scattered across the room, each one covered with my own drawing of how I looked when under the power of the moon. It kept eating at me more and more, and the more curious I got the more of a dare devil I became. Since everyone was downstairs doing something, I could sneak into my parents' bedroom to find the books my father told me never to touch.

As I tiptoed down the upstairs hallway I heard the hits and punches from Noah's video game, the was also the sound of something heavy falling over as well. Taking the distraction as my advantage I sprinted down the hallway and slipped into the open doorway of my parents' room. It looked like it usually did, bed made, tables nice and neat, closet and dresser organized, and the bookshelf kept orderly. I walked over to the shelf and scanned the bookshelf, there didn't seem to be anything at all! There were encyclopedias stacked on the top three, a bunch of motivational books taking over four of the shelves, and then For Dummies books filling the last two shelves. Where would dad keep all the hand-me-down books?

I looked under the bed to only find office files and my mother's wedding dress, I also checked the top shelf in the closet, nothing. This was getting stupid, I wanted to learn about the family. The decision was final, I was going to go to the local library. I left the room and went back into my bedroom to grab my fall jacket, a pair of boots, and my iPod. I then went down the stairs and walked to my dad's office.

I knocked on the door frame before speaking, "Hey, dad, is it okay if I go to the library?"

"Sure, just keep track of the time. Don't stay out too late," he replied while looking at the computer screen intently.

"Got it," I replied and headed towards the front door.

Noah still sat on the ground, eyes glued to the tv. Getting an evil idea, I carefully dragged the bag of potato chips away from him and stuffed them into the pantry. He deserved it for hitting me earlier, stupid kid.

The library wasn't that far away, since there wasn't a need for my bike or for anyone to drive me. I turned the corner of the sidewalk onto the small business street in the neighborhood. The street was lined with little restaurants and shops, most of them had a vintage sign above the doorway or a neon sign in the window. They were nice, everyone respected each other but it was also considered the gossip street, just don't do anything bad here and you'll be safe.

The hot-spot was usually a little cafe where us teenagers and young adults would hang out, it had a nice little outdoor seating area where we would usually hang. As I walked by the little coffee house I saw a few kids from school, a Senior guy stood with one foot on top of the table talking to two girls who looked to be Juniors. He kept chatting with them, it was obvious he was trying to get their numbers with the smug smirk on his face and how his green eyes laughed in amusement. they didn't seem to mind either, the blonde was edging closer to him with a bright grin on her face, the other one didn't seem to care since she was just playing with a Samsung Galaxy in her hand.

I scanned for others seeing a girl from my science class with an older guy, probably a Junior. He was cute, but blah to me, for some reason I just didn't like guys at all. They were more like punching bags for me, and people who could accept that I was loud and obnoxious. There was also a group with their backs to me, by what I could see, I think the tallest one was Codi. If he was there later then I could probably chat with him and understand this whole werewolf thing better.

I started to walk again and faced forward so I could look for the library, it was an older building with beige walls, the windows were only single paneled and the door was made of a heavy wood unlike the glass ones every other building had. It also had a canopy above the door, the red and white stripes on it reminding me of the old barber shops. I pushed on the heavy door to get into the old structure, it was lighter than I remembered, I usually had to use my entire body to open it.

As I entered the library, I noticed how dark it was inside, was the librarian not here today? Mrs. Gamgee usually was here all the time, always here when someone needed help.

"Hello?" I called out, I took another step in, was she here or not?

I jumped as I felt a tap on the shoulder, when I looked to see who it was there stood the librarian. She seemed older than when I last saw her, she had to lean over due to her curved back, and on top of that her entire body seemed thinner than usual. Her wrinkly old skin didn't latch all that well to her, every time she shook or walked or even lifted her hand it would flap around, the sight always made me feel sick. Her curly black hair was now all gray as well, a few white hairs had begun to appear in the mess of curls as well, her eyebrows were already pure white and barely visible. Her soft pea green eyes were also complimentary to her sweet elderly look, they were round and soft, she always had such a caring look with them.

"It's okay, I'm not a ghost, dear. Did you come to get a book for an essay?" She asked, you could hear how calm she was, she didn't sound old which always surprised me.

"No, actually, I'm wanting to do personal reading," I told her. "I've been watching a show called Teen Wolf lately and was wondering if the show used actual facts on werewolves. Then there's the Vampire Diaries, so I want to do research on vampires as well." It sounded stupid, I know, but with knowing there were vampires and werewolves in existence I had to play safe.

"Ah, so you're the type who likes to know show accuracy?"

"Um, yeah, I like proving them wrong." That sounded bad, I have to think about how to reply. Dammit. I am such a stupid person!

"Okay, well we have an entire section on mythology and paranormal over there in the aisle next to the computers. I hope you can find what you're looking for," she smiled at me before leaving to the desk in the center of the library.

I walked over to the computers to look at the bookshelf over there. There was an array of different styles in the book binding, old and new, bright and dark, weak and sturdy. Did I have to go on?

I scanned the titles, most being of Greek or Norse mythology. I looked more and more, it seemed the library didn't have many supernatural creatures on profile. I kept looking, there had to be something, at least one book! That's when I noticed a book with a shiny title, shiny always liked to stand out. I looked at the title, Hungarian Legends. Yeah, that would work.

I pulled it off the shelf and immediately felt all of it's weight yank my arm down. It was heavy, how many pages were in this thing? As I examined it, I saw the book was about four to five inches thick and the width about eight inches, not to mention the length being eleven!

I tucked the giant book under my arm and kept looking for more, hopefully ones that were specific on just werewolves or vampires. I found a few more, some were small and light while others were like the first one I found, big and heavy. I believed the longest one had almost two thousand pages, and on top of that the print was very tiny. The selection was good, I have a few of both vampire and werewolf books, I also grabbed some other supernatural stuff to research like witches, phoenixes, and zombies. Those were popular, right?

I walked over to the front desk and set the stack of books on the table, the librarian gave me a questioning eye. I just shrugged my shoulders and gave her my library card.

"That's quite a big stack there, Missy." She said as she scanned the bar code on each one.

I took the books and tried to balance them in my arms as she handed me one after another. After the toppled a second time I sighed in irritation, I already picked them up once. I set them back on the counter one by one as I reached for more on the ground below.

"Would you like a bag to put them in?" she asked.

"Yeah, that would be nice," I replied.

She pulled a grocery bag out from under the desk, she began to bag the books into the bag as I continued to pick up the final three on the ground. When I looked back up I saw she had gotten another plastic bag out, extra strength I guess.

"Have a good day," she said with a warm smile.

"Thank you, you too!" I waved and exited the library with the bag strung over my shoulder. I hit my back with every step.

I walked back down the sidewalk to the cafe, Codi was still there with his friends. Hopefully it was okay for me to say hi to them, right?

"Hey, Codi. How's it going?" I asked openly, a few eyes drifted over to me as I approached.

"Um, hey, Nic. Fine, you?" He replied.

This is the first time I have ever really noticed him. He had soft brown hair that was wavy and reached his chin, it softened his oval face. His rounded eyes were a dark blue, that was unnatural but interesting to see. His features were soft as well, a slightly defined mouth and a medium sized upturned nose.

"I'm good, is it okay if I joined you guys?"

They all stayed quiet, a girl with a pale green beanie on looked up at me, a little unsure of me. I wasn't going to bite anyone, why were they scared of me?

"Sure," he said while exhaling. Did no one like me?

An awkward silence formed between us, there was definitely tension in the air. I just stood there for a second, slightly hopping on my feet from uneasiness. I didn't dare sit down at all.

"So, what were yo guys talking about?" I ask, trying to cut through the heavy atmosphere around us.

"How Pluto is a dwarf planet and not an actual planet." One boy said, he put emphasis on the last part while looking at the guy across from him.

"Seriously, Bennet, Pluto is a planet! Don't you remember first grade when we were taught that?" The other guy said, he was pissed off.

"No it isn't, they said Pluto was smaller than Eris. Eris is a dwarf planet therefore Pluto is one as well." Bennet said, he slammed his hand on the table at the last sentence.

"What if Eris is actually a planet now because of being bigger than Pluto? Did you ever think of that?" A few people mumbled, apparently this was a burn in this group? Lame.

I tried to look concerned hoping these kids would open up to me. If I wanted to learn more about the others like me then I had to get friendly with them fast.

The fight dragged on and on, and boredom started to take over my mind and body. I took my phone out of my pocket to look at the time. Four o'clock, I didn't have much longer until it was going to be dark.

"Okay, I have to get going, so see you guys later. And Pluto is a dwarf planet, do you not read the new textbooks they give us?" I asked casually before walking away. I didn't feel a part of that group yet, and I bet by making that comment I'm not going to be remembered as a nice person.

I sped up my walking to get home quicker, the sun wasn't going to be here much longer. Last time I was found outside after dark I was grounded for a week, no friends were allowed to come over and I couldn't go to their house. A black Avalon Hybrid drove by, when I glanced at it I saw that wretched boy Erik looking out at me. I gave him the stink eye and began to run to the house, I was not going to stay out here pissed off.

I skipped over the garden hose and walked up to the front door of the house, there was dirt all over the cement stairs again. As I entered I saw Noah still playing video games and the clack of the keyboard in my dad's office. The kitchen sink was running, mum had to be inside and cleaning the vegtables and fruits she picked.

I slipped off my shoes and went upstairs into my room to start reading, everything else was pretty boring. I shut the door and jumped onto my messed up bed, there's another chore to do on Wednesday. I pulled a book out to see it was one of the vampire ones, maybe I would just read this one for now. I opened it and flipped to the first secton, History, seemed like it was in order.

~~~
"Ugh," I moaned, "That was so boring!" I was tired from reading already.
I propped my chin on the heal of my hand and looked at the wall, my eyes were getting heavy. I knew I was going to fall asleep soon so why not just get on facebook for the time being?
I opened my phone and entered the app, it took forever and glitches but I dealt with it. I had only one notification this time, that was new. I opened it and rapped on the new status.
My mouth dropped in shock, this was frightening.
"Ohmygosh! Grandma Leary is back! She isn't dead!"
Molly's grandmother had died three hears ago.
