Chapter 23 - Nicolas

Even with my constant worry for Molly and wondering where she was at, I still had to rest. Aster had refused to give up his spot on the ground and told me to sleep in his bed, thinking Molly was going to return home sometime in the night. Her yellow bed covered in her favorite stuffed animals lied untouched as I sat on Aster's bed, pulling my pajamas out of my bag as he entered the room, the door being left open as I saw it stay in my line of vision.

"Nic, calm down," Aster spoke with a worried glance towards me.

I looked to him, confused. "I'm fine, why do you think I'm upset?"

"Your eyes and frown show it." Aster pointed at my face for a moment before dropping his hand back down to his side. He tucked some of his hair behind his ear as he stood in the space between the two beds, rocking on his feet.

I sat there, looking at him with my lips pursed. "So..." I drummed my hands on the bed before laughing a little bit.

Aster joined in before stopping. "You know the bathroom is open, right?" He scratched the back of his head as he neared closer to the dresser at the foot of his bed.

"So you're kicking me out?" I teased him. "That's rude!"

He laughed again, "Well, I'll be the villain then. I need to change as well."

I pushed myself up from the bed, distorting the large star on the comforter as I made my way out of the bedroom. I walked straight down their hallway, walking around the long curtains that blew outwards from the register on the floor. I opened the door to the bathroom and closed it, closing the one that led into the living room to secure my privacy. I changed quickly, not enjoying the cool air of the bathroom, the color of the tiled walls and floor also making me want to leave. I hated green and orange together, especially the dull versions of them like the bathroom.

After changing, I made my way back to the bedroom. A sudden noise stopped me from going on, my head turning to look at the covered windows. A shadow moved behind the one to the right, darting past the one on the left quickly. It wasn't normal to see shadows in from of the Brown house, there were no trees in front to cause them.

I dismissed it as being part of my imagination and walked back down the hallway, the floorboards creaking underneath my bare feet as I did so. A shuffling noise came from the exterior wall once again, pausing me in my tracks. I leaned towards the second window, brushing the vintage orange curtain out of the way to see outside into the hazy red atmosphere out there. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, the only thing that made me uneasy was the creepy stillness, even their wind chimes stood frozen still out hanging above the deck.

"Nic." I turned my head at the mention of my name, seeing Aster standing in his bedroom doorway. He motioned with his head for me to come in. I followed him, jumping onto his bed as he sat down on the floor, his back against Molly's bed. "What's been bothering you? You've seemed upset the entire night. It's not just Molly you're worried about, is it?" He asked with eyebrows raised.

"I am worried about Molly-"

"That doesn't answer my question." Aster cut in, immediately apologizing for cutting me off.

I smiled at his kindness and continued. "There's also some fighting going on at my house right now between my parents. My dad thought it would be best if I came over to hang out with you and Molly."

Aster nodded his head and heaved out a sigh. "It's kinda rare for your parents to fight, isn't it?" He asked with one eye closed, the other looking at me.

"Yeah, it isn't normal for them to be like this. I guess it's just the recent changes in the family." I shrugged my shoulders. A shadow came from the window, drawing my attention to it.

"What changes?" Aster asked while still looking at me. His voice held curiosity, but I could barely notice as I stood to my feet and walked over to the window, placing my hand on the pulled back, white and blue drapes.

"It's nothing of your concern, I don't think you want to deal with what I have to everyday." I pressed my forehead onto the glass, feeling the coolness of it spreading across the skin touching it. "Do you see anything out there, Aster?"

"Hm?" He came up next to me and placed a hand on the wall I had tested mine on as he looked out into the side of his property. "I don't see anything. Probably just your mind playing with you." He laughed a little.

Another dark movement drew my attention to the pine a few feet away from the window. "Then why do I keep seeing movement out there? It's still too cold for animals and there's no wind tonight." The red haze of the outdoors made me even more cautious, the color reminding me of the vampires' temporary reign of the crimson night.

"Then what do you think is out there?" I sensed Aster turned his head towards me as he asked me the question.

"I really don't know." I sighed and turned away from the window, going back to the bed and standing at the foot of it. "It could just be my mind playing tricks."

The sound of a window opening caught my ear. I looked at Aster, him looking back at me before turning his head in the direction of the sound. I mirrored his actions, now looking at the pale figure clad in black come in through the window. Once the person stood up, I recognized it was Erik.

"You two, come with me. Molly is in a tad bit of trouble at the moment." He spoke while looking at me with a blank expression.

I began to feel uneasy and trembled slightly. Molly was in trouble, and I didn't know what was going to happen to her.

"Where is she?" I blurted, stepping forward quickly.

A hand rested on my shoulder and then Aster spoke, "More importantly is why this guy came into my house." Aster looked at Erik, catching the cold boy's attention. "Why did you intrude into my house?"

"I don't think that matters right now," Erik was blunt. "I think you'd worry more about your sister, wouldn't you?"

Aster swallowed before nodding at Erik. I then repeated myself. "Where is Molly?"

"Come with me and I'll show you." Erik turned back around and climbed out the window. I started following after until Aster pulled me back.

I turned to him with slight irritation. "What?"

"Are you seriously going to walk out of here in those clothes?" He raised an eyebrow while pointing at my sleepwear.

I sighed and twisted my arm out of his grip, Aster letting his fingers loosen as I did. Making sure he didn't look, I changed back into my earlier clothes and threw my jacket on. I then walked over to the window and threw both legs out to hang off, putting me in the position of sitting on the frame. I looked up at Aster as he stood awkwardly. "I'll be out here with Erik. We'll wait for you to change."

"Alright," Aster replied. He then turned his back to me as he walked to his dresser, my queue to now slip out the window.

I landed on the ground with ease, feeling the frozen grass crunch under my feet. Erik was leaning against the pine tree and looking off in the distance. I started to walk over to him, careful of avoiding the areas covered in the moonlight.

"There aren't many people out for the eclipse tonight." Erik spoke while looking up at the red moon.

"It's probably because it's late for most people. The only ones awake are probably teenagers and little kids." I said as I leaned up against the tree next to him. It was silent, excluding the rustling of leaves from nocturnal animals.

"Sorry." I could barely hear Erik as he mumbled.

"Huh?" I moved my head to look at him. "What are you talking about?"

"About the time I almost killed you. It was idiotic of me to do so, especially with how important you now are in this fight."

I shivered while furrowing my eyebrows together, a slight headache forming from the action. "Why? Because I share the same thoughts as you against your family?"

"Mostly, but you're also a Noble Werewolf. Your powers are needed in the fight against them. If I had killed you, then the werewolves, witches, and warlocks in Maine would all be dead by now." His explanation was long enough to make me yawn.

The sound of feet falling on grass then caught my attention. Aster pulled his hood up around his black hair before walking over to us. "I'm all ready if you guys are."

Erik pushed himself off of the tree and started to walk casually towards the forest behind the house. "We're going to have to go about thirty miles or so into the country to find her. From what I've observed, the vampires had taken a group of witches and warlocks who were performing a spell. The battle is close to home, so we have a change of plans. Brown, since you're only human, I'd like you to alert the Dalca head about the current situation. State that the battle has started out in the country area to the west, all werewolves are needed for combat."

I looked at Aster to see his frightened expression. Molly and their grandmother never told him or the rest of the family about the paranormal world, so he was most likely overwhelmed by the new information given to him. His view on me and his sister were going to change now with the truth revealed, it was certain.

He swallowed again and nodded his head. "Alright, I'll go tell Nic's dad." He looked at me again, not moving at all. "If I may ask, Nic, what are you?"

"A werewolf." I spoke casually, if I acted like it was no big deal, then maybe he'd be more comfortable. "To be more exact, I'm a werewolf from the original cursed family. Hope that helps." I smiled at him before waving goodbye and following after Erik, stepping into the light and transforming. If it was thirty miles, then it'd be quicker to be in our creature form.

"You smell like a dog." Erik spoke as I walked to him.

I gave a low growl to express my annoyance at the comment. That was the sad part of being a werewolf sadly, I couldn't say that he smelled like death, only think it to myself. After a moment of looking at each other, I started walking into the forest and began running in seconds.

Molly was in danger.

And that wasn't even the worst part.

Everyone would be in danger soon.
