Chapter 10 - Nicolas

I ran across the grassy field, my feet (or should I say paws) pressing into the damp dirt. Taylor was right in front of me, he was quick and rarely stopped to see if I was still behind him. I picked up my pace to catch up once he jumped over a river, the sound of frogs and crickets silenced as I followed his suit.

We arrived to a small man made shelter under a big oak. The roof consisted of branches tied together with leaves from the trees surrounding it. There was a small hole in the front of it, it had to be the door, there was no other way in. Taylor looked back at me, he nudged the entrance way with his black nose. Apparently he wanted us to go in.

I did a slight nod before walking off into the bushes with my bag tied around my neck. When I transformed. My pants had apparently slid off since my hips shrunk instead of growing, so they were lost when we ran off. My shirt had also ripped since my rib cage jutted out so far as a werewolf as well. The only good thing though about being a werewolf is that my eyes turned a bright amber and my fur was a mix of gold and bronze fur, talk about awesomeness!

I transformed back and pulled out the clothing from the bag. It wasn't the best choice for the weather, it was chilly so a tank top and yoga pants would not work well. I slipped them on along with my other required clothing and walked back out to meet up with Taylor.

"So what's this place? A hideout?" I asked.

"Well, kinda. It's an outpost for us to hide in while checking for unwelcome guests. If any vampires or other venomous monsters come then we attack them while the third person makes their way back to the pack."

"Ah, I see." I walked over and tapped one of the twigs stuck in the tied wall. "So who's the other person here?"

"Danielle will be here shortly," Taylor replied while scratching his head. I think he mumbled something about fleas.

"So I'm not the only werewolf girl?"

"Nope, anyone pass the age of sixteen can be turned by being bitten and then killing a vampire by the next full moon. It's pretty easy in my opinion."

"So, what happens to anyone below sixteen?"

"They die. Simple as that." He said before walking into the hideout. He popped his head back out a second later and looked at me. "Are you going to come in or not?"

I took a step up onto the root of the tree before hoisting myself up to get inside the structure. The inside looked a lot like the outside of it, everything was made of twigs bound by ropes. Cracks of light filled in the tiny slivers and created abstract patterns on the earth floor.

"This is cozy, but how do you see outside to know if an enemy is getting close?"

"We use these," he tossed me a small knife and demonstrated how to look out. It was as simple as putting the blade through two of the sticks and slightly pushing them apart.

"Oh, so techy." I said sarcastically.

"Hey, you'll like this better later on. And plus, they have been coated in Holy Water, vampires are still considered Satan's creation."

"So we stab them with a knife? I thought it was a stake."

"Stakes aren't that effective," he said as he peered out to the other side.

"What about a werewolf bite, plain holy water, the effects of the sun, garlic?"

He looked at me with an alarmed eye. Before I could answer he had covered my mouth and pushed me down onto the ground. The sound of twigs and leaves came to my ears, a few snaps or crunches from here to there. They couldn't see in, right?

When the footsteps faded away Taylor let me go. I immediately wiped my mouth since his dirty hand got in it, gross. I gave him a 'what the hell?!' face as he looked back at me from the gap in the wall.

"Just a person," he whispered.

"Really? You tackled me for that?"

"We can't give away our hideout." He glanced at the watch that lied on the ground, he frowned causing a slight crease in between his eyebrows. "Danielle should be here by now. Where could she.."

A slight smell came to my nose, it smelled of peppermint and pine. There then came a rush of snapping twigs and a gust of wind went by our hidden spot. A high pitched scream sliced through the foggy air, chills went down my spine. And just like that, they stopped.

I stood up and stepped out into the bright night, the moon shown across the pathway and also bounced off the water particles in the air. Taylor came out beside me and looked out into the dense woods.

"There's an intruder, come on." He bolted into the trees leaving me alone, I'm not going to chase after him since he's too fast.

A growl was heard far off in his direction before there was a bark and the sound of something being rammed into a tree. I could soon smell the blood in the air, but it wasn't the normal salt-like smell, it smelled like a heavy cologne that could make you gag. I don't know how, but it did smell like it. I coughed a little bit into the crook of my elbow before I crouched down to relax my legs a bit. Taylor could handle this, right? He was more experienced than me.

My hair on my neck started to stand on end, the smell of the peppermint and pine returning. I stood up and looked around me for any sign of the person that was near, nothing. I telexed my stance and sighed. I was getting paranoid, I knew I was.

A sudden force landed on my back and knocked me down onto the ground face first. I coughed and brushed the dirt on my nose off behore turning my head to see a young woman on my back. Her eyes glowed a vibrant red, I couldn't make anything else out though due to her black silhouette.

I quickly elbowed her in the side and scrambled to my feet. I backed up into the trees behind me hoping to hide in the shadows. Apparently I didn't work since she charged at me with an incredible speed. I threw myself to the side and kicked her in between her shoulder blades, she tumbled onto the forest floor while yelling in pain. I couldn't waste any time, I picked up a heavy branch and swung it at her head as she stood back up. The impact threw her head back resulting in her neck snapping and her torso to bend back unnaturally.

A howl turned my attention back to Taylor, bad idea to have my back turned. Was he winning? Or was he in pain?

Taking the advantage the vampire latched onto me and clawed at my open skin, I screamed as I felt her nails dig through it like frozen knives. I fought back, taking my hands I grabbed her small waist and pushed her off into a tree. There was a loud split of the wood as she made impact. I guess werewolves were the stronger ones, that's a good advantage.

She didn't take it well. She looked up at me with her glowing eyes again, hatred and determination in them. She lunged at me again and this time I didn't hold back. I threw my arm out and hit her in the jaw. She hissed in pain and tried biting me, her white fangs protruding from her mouth. I pulled my hand back and swiped at her, my nails dug into her face causing her skin to burn as if a hot piece of metal had went through it.

"You're going to get it, you little mutt.. This isn't the end." With the last sentence she turned on her heels and sprinted away.

I stood there and watched her run, once the moon hit her she gained speed and ran even faster than before. A blur merged and disappeared as darkness consumed her again. Just moments later I heard heavy breathing behind me, hot breath then landed on my neck as the person stopped behind me.

"So that girl was a vampire? How could I not know that?" Taylor questioned in frustration.

"It was an act apparently," I said nonchalantly, "They knew we were here and staged an act so they could try and beat us."

He walked infront of me and looked me in the face. "Really? Then why did the tougher one go after me and not you?"

"Maybe because I'm not as experienced." I shrugged my shoulders.

He looked at the ground as he walked past me again thinking. He rested his forefinger on the hook of his chin while resting his elbow in the palm of his other hand. Apparently he was trying to figure out what was going on and why this just happened to us.

"You do have a point, and also since you're not as experienced and a pure-blood that makes you very vulnerable. Maybe you should stick with one of your brothers or sisters when out and about, even when you're with your firends they should be with you at all times."

"Just for protection?"

"Until you're strong enough to take care of yourself."

"But what about if I want to be myself or with one other friend? I'd want my space."

"We could be from a distance. Just find someone that would be able to fit in your group."

I groaned, "Really? I have to do it? You're the one who suggested it!"

He ignored me as he walked back to the hideout. I have no idea why he was going there, he had nothing to bring back with him. And apparently he didn't care about my stuff since he didn't grab my bag. He continued down the path into the moonlight causing him to transform.

"Hey--! Wait for me!" I yelled as I grabbed my bag and ran after him.

The light hit my bronze skin as I entered the edge of the river, I kept running as the transformation went through its process. I tossed the bag up quickly as my left hand turned into a padded brown paw and caught it in between my teeth. The leap was coming in a second and i had to prepare myself for it. I gained more speed as I tilted my head down a little bit and heaved my shoulders forward even more. I pushed off on my back legs and landed on the other side, I stumbled only a little.

I looked up at the sky to see where the moon was at, it was almost ninety degrees above my head.

Shit.

My dad was going to kill me for being late.
