Creatures at Sea
Prologue
It was Test #1030.
The subject lay on a table. Her wrists, ankles, and neck were locked down on it, and she was sound asleep. She moaned a few times, turning her blonde haired of head side to side. The woman pulled against the restraint but only lightly before she calmed down, and soft snores escaped her.
A man in his early thirties stared through the glass at her. There were scientists in there with her watching her heart and brain frequency if they could sense any fault. So far, it had been good.
Taking a deep breath, the man knocked on the glass.
One of the Scientist who went by the name S.D looked up at him. A woman behind the class turned on the microphone and the man spoke, "How is she?"
"She is doing well, sir," the man answered confidently. He looked through the book he held and added, "There's no awkward mumbling like the other patients. She doesn't sense the other personality which can be useful, and they are both on the same frequency."
The man adjusted the gold ring on his right middle finger then looked down at the scientist in the white lab coat. "What does this mean Samuel?"
He smiled. "This means you get to name your first Devout."
The man behind the glass had to grin when he heard that. The very first one. It had been nerve wrecking to lose too many people to the project, but now that he had one, there was a chance for many. He wasn't going to lose faith now.
The man brought his lips to the microphone, his excitement peaking. "Wake it up."
Samuel nodded then turned back to the other scientists in the room. He ordered them to type up codes and command and when they were done, Samuel turned back to the man. "You can come in, sir."
The man cracked his knuckles as his assistant lead him to the door and down a flight of stairs. Samuel took it from there and led him to the table where his successful subject lay.
Looking at the woman up close, she was young, and her skin had a warm glow to it. He had an urge to touch it, but he didn't dare, not when there were people around. The man looked up and met Samuel's eyes, and the dark skinned man nodded, giving him permission to speak.
The man played with his ring again as he remembered the trigger words. "Charlotte, you can come out now."
There was no response.
Samuel turned white the moment his gaze met the man's icy ones. He looked away quickly at the other scientists in the room, but most of them just shrugged or didn't look at him.
"Samu-"
The woman groaned and tried to move against the restrained, freezing the two men from doing or saying anything further. Her eyes fluttered open but immediately squinted at the white light in front of her. Samuel quickly lowered the brightness and the woman blinked.
The man looked at Samuel, silently asking what he should do and the man awkwardly shrugged.
However, before the man could say another word, the woman tilted her head to meet his eyes and hers focused. "Yes, sir."
The man smiled widely then brushed the hair from her eyes. "Welcome home, Charlotte."
