Creatures at Camp

Summer camp could mean a lot of things. It could be a camp for people his age to have fun and do fun activities away from home. It could be a camp for adults who just sit around a camp to talk about the weather and debate politics. Or it could be school, hidden behind the pretty name called Summer camp. However, he wasn't excited about either ones.

"Why summer camp?" Silas whined, burying his head into the book he was reading. He couldn't concentrate knowing he was going to be away from home, work and friends for a month.

Why? Why summer camp this year? What good could come from that?

"Quite your whining." Ava glared at him, her legs crossing and uncrossing. She was definitely just as annoyed, but she was more composed than he was.

"Mum, we can still turn back." She leaned forward in her seat, her short blond hair falling over her shoulder.

Mum looked back at the both of them from where she sat in the passenger's seat and smiled weakly. "Too late for that, love. Your dad's already paid. Think of the good here. You get to be away from us for a month."

"That I don't mind. It's the fact that I don't get to see my friends too. This ain't fair. I want to go back. Dad!" She glanced at her Dad with hopes he would have a change of heart, but he was as stiff as always.

"Nothing I can do dear. Your mum's word goes."

"Gosh." Ava sighed with exasperation then leaned back in her seat.

Silas gave his elder sister a weak smile, but she only looked away from him. Ava was mad and not the kind he liked which used to be in his favor.

Biting his lips when he felt the need to complain, he knew his parents weren't going to budge. Ava was only going to get mad if she had to listen to his whiny voice so he stayed silent and waited until they got to their destination.

...

Nothing about it was nice.

Nothing about the camp could even give them a tiny bit of hope that they were going to like it. The only building in the area looked like it had been built in the late 2000s and both Silas and his sister had already been assaulted by mosquitos. In fact, Ava's started begging all over again.

"Ava!" Their mum frowned at her as they walked towards the administration's office. It was a small broken down cabin that stood in front of the dense woods with a sign board that read: Yonakai Woods.

No one would have known it was the administration office if they didn't have a second sign board that said: Administration Office for Yonakai Summer Camp.

"Looks beat up," Silas said as he rolled his luggage to the building, frowning as he had to pull it through the stray weeds that littered the ground. He knocked on the door and when no one answered, he turned to his family. "I don't think anyone is home. Mum, Dad, let's go."

"No, not yet." Their Dad said as he and his wife walked past Silas and his sister to the door.

Ava drew closer to Silas as their parents pounded the door almost desperately. "We've got to find a way to run."

"It's no use, Ava. Mum and Dad want us gone." He stuffed his hands in his pocket and sighed wistfully, having already given up the fight to go back to the hotel their parents had booked.

Ava frowned at him, her black brows narrowing slightly. "Do you have any idea how we are going to suffer? We might sleep in tents. I am not comfortable with tents."

Silas held his tongue knowing if he disagreed with her, he wasn't going to hear the end of it. He might have a whiny voice since his voice hadn't developed completely yet but she was the one who fussed when she didn't like anything. And worse, she didn't know how to hold her tongue.

The fact that Silas was the one composed at the moment could only mean she had snapped.

"Well, it seems like no one is here," their dad finally admitted then frowned. "Those crooks stole my money."

"No one answered?" Ava didn't understand until two seconds later when she saw her parents walking back to the car. She immediately brightened up and smiled at her brother. "Guess there's no need to run away then."

"Then let's go."

"Sorry for not responding earlier! Please come back."

The minute Silas and Ava heard that stranger's voice, they knew all hopes were lost. Now they really had to go to the camp and worse, just as Ava had predicted, they used tents.

"What the fuck is this?!"

Before them was what the stranger, now known as Mr. Rivers called the camping ground. There was a fireplace surrounded by logs of woods and just a few meters away were tents. They weren't huge, but they weren't small either. Mr. Rivers had taken them down a long way from the building and into the forest the second their parents had gotten into the car. They hadn't even waited to say goodbye but mostly because Ava would cuss them out for it.

"This'll be ya home for the next four weeks. Whaddya think?" Mr. Rivers grinned widely as if they were supposed to be impressed, ignoring Ava's earlier remark. "Huh? Huh?"

Ava wanted to yell at him. It was all over her face, but Silas spoke up instead. "Where do we get settled in?"

He smiled. "That's the spirit. Now, most of the campers went out fishing and others went to fetch the firewood. I'm sure a few are still hiding in their tents. Anyways, let's get you settled in." He dropped his hands on either side of Silas' shoulder then said, "Forgive me but I'll have to leave you here and help your sister out. Please do wait a while."

"Sure whatever." He shrugged the man's hands off then adjusted his luggage on the floor so he could sit on it. "I'll be waiting here."

"Fine. So if you follow me, Miss. Mock." The man tried to act like a gentleman by stretching out his hand to her, but Ava only glared at it then at him. Mr. River took the hint and led her to the right side of the camping ground.

Silas wasn't too worried about his sister. First, she was three years older than him, having turned 21 a few weeks ago and secondly, she knew just how to defend herself. Who he was more worried about was himself. Places like this freaked him out, and he watched everything in sight cautiously.

In the eerie silence, Silas made out the sound of twigs snapping. He froze up when it grew nearer and a shiver when up his spine when it stopped behind him. Silas could sense it; he didn't need it touching him to know. Something was behind him.

Taking a deep breath, he prepared to sprint in the direction he had seen Rivers and his sister enter but never got the chance. The thing breathing down his neck happen to jump in front, scaring the living daylights out of him.

Silas yelped, tripping on his bag and falling on his back. He instantly covered his eyes, ignoring the intense urge to run.

"Whoa whoa whoa," He heard the monster who sounded rather human say. His voice was deep, and Silas guessed he was slightly older than him. "Edgar, stop scaring him. Rivers is going to freaking kill you if he finds out you're already bullying the new kid."

"Like I care what River says." Silas didn't know if the two boys in front of him were friends but Silas had to admit that Edgar's voice had his stomach churning...in a good way. "That was a good scare though, wasn't it?"

"No, it wasn't."

Though Edgar sounded cocky, the other boy's deep chilly voice was pretty friendly, and it moved Silas to drop his hands down. One of the boys, the one with the lovely blond hair stretched out his hands to Silas and smiled.

"Come on, I'll help you up. My name is Benjamin by the way."

He was the nice one with the friendly voice, and he pulled Silas up then brushed the dead leaves and sticks off his clothes.

"You can call me Benji if you don't mind."

Stepping away from him after he was done dusting him off, he returned the smile and said, "Hi Benji. I'm Silas."

"Hmm, Silas is not a bad name. I like it." The boy beside him that had to be Edgar grinned then reached for Silas' shoulders and shook it lightly. "Sorry, I scared you. I'm Edgar, please call me Edgar."

"There wasn't anything to call you anyway." Benji sighed.

"Stay out of this, Benny."

He frowned at his friend then looked back at Silas, his smile quickly returning. "It's good to have you, Silas."

Hearing the boy's amazing husky voice and standing so close to him to be able to see the black spots on his face had Silas's mind running with absolute nonsense.

"I-It's good to be here."

That's what he thought. Silas believed things weren't going to get any better but boy, was he wrong.
