7: Only in the Night
"Cylest honey, it's time to wake up."
I toss to the other side, hoping to get away from whoever is trying to wake me. I hear a slight chuckle before whoever just spoke to me shakes me lightly, slightly calloused hands holding firm to my bare shoulders. I groan and roll over as I hear curtains being pushed and sunlight invades the room. Wait, no, it's moonlight. Moonlight invades the room like an unwanted presence. I blink my eyes open as they adjust to the light.
"Oh look, mommy, the moon is so pretty tonight!" I say, jumping out of bed. My legs pull me to the window where the woman, who I assume is my mother, is standing by the window. I grab her hand and jump up and down like a child reaching for a new toy. She looks at me and her shoulder length brown hair sways from the movement. She smiles and speaks to me again.
"Yes, sweetie, it is, but now it's time for breakfast," her voice is as smooth as honey and it feels like I've heard this voice before. She grabs a silver tray and brings it over to where I'm sitting at the window. "I had the staff make your favorite; French Toast with maple syrup and sliced bananas," she finishes with a gentle smile. Her figure is average height and slender. I continue to look out at the beautiful moon, feeling as if I'm seeing it for the first time.
"Hey, mommy?" I say, turning to look at her and setting my try aside, "when will we see Father again? I miss him..."
She looks at me slightly shocked and brushes a strand of hair behind my ear, as she smiles longingly at me. "I miss him too, baby. We'll see him soon though, I promise," she says, kissing my forehead," but for now, let's get you washed and dressed."
A few moments later, the scene fades, and a black-gray mist surrounds me. As the mist fades, I realize that I'm now standing in what seems to be a rose garden. I look around and see a giant house, much bigger than the brothers' behind me. The moon is shining overhead once more and the reds, pinks, and yellows seem to be illuminated by the blue moonlight shining over them. I walk around the garden, admiring and even reaching out to touch a few roses. Their petals feel as soft as silk against my fingertips. The garden seems to be surrounded by large hedges, preventing intruders. I hear voices in the distance and I hide behind a large fountain. I can hardly make out what is being said as I listen in. I discern my mother's voice from a male's that I don't recognize.
"Well, when were you planning on taking her to see him? She can't stay here for much longer. You know that as well as I do, Sophia," the male voice says.
"I am aware of that, Christopher. I just-" Mother says back to him.
"I understand that you don't want to send her away. I wouldn't either if she were my daughter, but it's your duty; first as queen of this land and second as her mother. Sophia, you have to, and it has to be soon. The enemy is rallying their troops as we speak," Christopher says.
Mother sighs long and hard. "Alright, I'll take her to see Elettra tomorrow night. She's the only one of them I trust to do this right."
"I know this is hard for you, my queen. We are here for you. Our job is to protect you and the rest of our people, but it will be more difficult having to look after the princess too," Christopher says to her. They both sigh heavily once more and the scene fades again as I'm surrounded by the black-gray mist.
As the mist fades once again, I'm walking in what looks like a forest with Mother. She's standing beside me and I feel nervous and scared after what I overheard the night before. She didn't tell me where we were going before she put me in what she called "human clothes" and rushed me out the door.
"Mommy, where are we going? It's too early to walk in the forest. I'm scared," I say to her. She doesn't answer and I sense how nervous she is. Her hand is gripping mine as if she never wants to let go. I look around at the green birch and oak trees surrounding us on every side. Some have begun changing color to oranges and reds as the moonlight, once again, seems to reflect their colors. We continue to walk and about 10 minutes later, we arrive at a small cottage. The trees cover the house like a protective blanket, not allowing any light to pass through.
"What is this place, Mommy? I don't like it," I say to her. She doesn't say anything and knocks on the door to the old cottage. A cloaked figure opens the door and I'm unable to see her facial features. She motions us inside and Mother pulls me towards the door. As I enter, the scene fades and the black-gray mist surrounds me for what I hope is the final time.
The mist fades and I make out a familiar hallway. It doesn't take me long to figure out where I am. I recognize this hallway from that night; the first night I saw Thomas' powers. If this is anything like the others, I should start running. As suspected, I hear a deep and angry growl echo through the halls and I run for my life, once again. The creature's footsteps come closer and I attempt to speed up. My breath becomes short as I struggle to keep running and I trip over something. The creature chasing me slows down as I back away quickly.
"Who are you?" I yell to it. Its mouth doesn't seem to move.
"I am a creature of the dark. A creature who is forever trapped in these walls. I sense you're powers. You must be one of them," it says sniffing the air, "you smell different. It's something I haven't smelled in a very very long time. You smell... delicious." It pounces and lands right on top of me, biting my throat. I scream and jolt up from my pillow. I look around, frantically and recognize this as my room. I'm back home. I look over to the window to find Dale fast asleep in the chair. He tosses, looking at me.
"Are you alright?" he asks soothingly.
"Y-yeah... I think so. Sorry to wake you up," I reply. He nods and tosses back to the other side. I fall back onto my pillow and stare up at the ceiling, scared to go back to sleep, until morning comes.
