twenty-three

Hyunjae was back to pacing.

The doctors were examining her. They'd put her on an IV, and that made him wonder... When was the last time she'd eaten? He hadn't seen her eat breakfast, and she'd just had a tiny bit of soup for dinner. Before that, he couldn't remember either.

He should have been more attentive. Most importantly, he shouldn't have left her this morning.

When she'd insisted that she was fine, he'd known that she was lying. So why had he left her? At the back of his mind, he could shake the feeling that this was all his fault.

The doctor opened the room door, and he immediately ran over.

"Is she okay? Is she awake? Can I see her? It's nothing serious, right?" he asked, speaking so quickly that he was sure the doctor wouldn't understand anything he'd just said.

The doctor laughed, shaking her head at him. "She'll be fine. It seems like her condition was caused by anxiety, stress, shock... things like that. Has she been in any stressful situations lately?"

Hyunjae's chest suddenly felt tight, and he struggled to find words.

A stressful situation was not the right term to describe what it was she must be going through right now.

She'd been torn away from everything. Her family, her friends, her world. Her chance at success.

And why?

Because of him. He remembered, she'd said it a while ago. Before they'd become friends, before he'd started caring for her... she'd said it. He could hear the words clearly in his mind.

"This is all your fault. Why did I feel sorry for you? If I hadn't felt sorry for you, this never would have happened. Your heart isn't even breaking, you're just a stupid character in my stupid book!"

He could still hear her sobs ringing through the hallways of the school.

This was all his fault.

He felt tears welling up in the corners of his eyes, and was furious at himself when he felt them rolling down his cheeks. He had no right to cry, not after ruining her life.

"Hey, she'll be alright," the doctor said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "Why don't you go in there, hm? She's asleep for now, but I'm sure you'll be the person she first wants to see when she wakes up. Your name is Hyunjae, right?"

"Yes. Why?"

The doctor laughed. "When she woke up, the first person she asked for was you. She looked worried about you."

That just made Hyunjae feel like crying even more.

"You guys are sure lucky to have found each other," the doctor said, beginning to walk away. "Now go inside, wait for your girlfriend to wake up."

His girlfriend

Maybe he should stop being scared. Maybe he should stop worrying about them being parted in the future.

Maybe he should just confess.
