It was a dark stormy night in the small woodland village. A young girl, at the age of thirteen, was still in the forest gathering materials for her witchcraft spells with her pet wolf, Honey Willow. Rain pattered on the leaves and moistened the uncovered ground. But they were safe under the large oak tree Blair was harvesting red and white mushrooms from the base.
"Honey you silly girl you can't eat these!" She laughed and lightly shoved the white creature who was sticking the nose in the ground, sniffing the base of the last fungi. Her pet whined as she dug it up and placed it in the jar with the others in her messenger back.
"We should head back before mom freaks out... And I need to make sure I hide these. If my parents found out I was doing this id be dead already." She mumbled to herself. Blair ran off, her dog following beside her. It was a short run to home, she quickly jogged to her room and stashed the contents under her bed.
Her mom then came into her room with a worried smile. "Oh, there you are! I was starting to get worried! What were you doing out in the storm? In the dark no less!" She asked.
"Honey and I were just playing Ma. You know I like the rain" The girl half lied.
"Well let's hope you don't get sick." Her mother crossed her arms.
"I promise Ma I won't! I dressed warm and I'm gonna change right now. Don't even worry about me" She took her jacket off. Mom nodded and closed her door. Leaving her daughter alone. She quickly changed and got to work on her spell.
It was supposed to summon a spirit that takes the shape of a snow-white dove to help her through her journey of spirituality but one wrong step and she could summon the exact opposite. An evil spirit is known as the Owl Shadow. The owl is an omen of bad luck in her religion and her own culture. He was a tall, lengthy man in a mask that resembled plague doctors. But it was made of a large bird skull with deer antlers. Like the rest of his attire which was covered in pelts, feathers, and bone shards of woodland creatures. It's rare to see the man himself but you see ghostly owls through the forest before he attacks. When does it is said it is done so stealthily that all you see before you die is a blur.
Knowing this information Blair was very careful to do everything precisely and correctly. She carefully sprinkled the pine shards, chopped just the right amount of mushroom, and poured only 3 drops of moon water. She grabbed a handful of the dark mandrake root before thunder stuck outside startling her into putting the whole handful into the pot. The girl gasped for air, she thought for a moment.
"No, I think that was right. We're ok." She panted. Blair grabbed her knife and swallowed. "Last step..." She bite her lip and shut her eyes, making a slice on her hand. She winced in pain and let the blood drip into the cauldron. When it was enough she got a rag and wrapped it around her hand then grasped the spoon in the bowl to stir it, making the contents bubble. "It's working!" She smiled. The brew pooled into a cloud of ominous grey smoke, two wings appearing from the mist. Blair poured it into a small potion bottle and smelt it.
"It worked" She sighed happily before drinking it all down quickly. She stuck her tongue out at the taste, not all that appetizing. She collapsed on her bed, Honey snuggling up to her.
"By this time tomorrow, I'm gonna have my own little spirit guide" Blair smiled lazily before closing her eyes letting sleep slowly overtake her.
Then there was a loud booming lighting strike and a crack. Followed by a violent crash. She screamed and shot up, looking out her window. One of the trees near the village had fallen down. She sighed about to fall back to bed before hearing a deafening screech, an owl had passed the window, its talons scratching the material.
She drew back. "Owl... I-It can be" She muttered. The witch tried not to think about it she snuggled up in bed and tried to get some sleep. "Hopefully tomorrow it'll be here. Or I won't know what to do." She thought to herself.
The next day came and her mom was in her room bright and early to wake her up. "Sweetheart it's time to get up" She nudged her shoulder. The teenager hummed and sat up tiredly.
"Why it's still early..." She complained.
"Your father went out to chop firewood so I need you to go get some food for us" Mom explained. Her daughter begrudgingly got out of bed.
"Ok ok. Just lemme changed and I'll be out in a minute" She put a hand through her hair. The mother nodded and left the room. Leaving Blair to change into a tunic and pants with her boots and threw her hooded cloak over it. She got her bow and arrows and put them on her back, walking out of her room, she grabbed her wooden staff and walked towards the door.
"I'll be back with deer ma" She called.
"Sure you will" The adult chuckled.
Blair ran towards the forest, looking left and right for signs of animals. She heard a rustling of the bushes and a whisper. She ducked down into a crouch, looking for the source. A deer trotted into view unaware of any human. Blair smiled and grabbed her bow and arrow drew it back.
"We'll see about that Ma... We'll see-" She felt cocky before the deer jolted its neck towards her like someone had snapped it. Its jaw unhinged into a pitch-black mouth with sharp teeth, its hazel eyes become big black holes in its face. Blair screamed and fell back. The monster began to distortedly walk towards her. Its limbs bending and breaking as it came closer. She scrambled to her feet and began to run not looking back. The girl began to hear heavy stomping behind her. She was hyperventilating and didn't want to look but she did. It was a tall figure in animals pelts and bones. It was not human. The underparts were shadowy and smoky like a spirit.
"Oh my god."
