Rhys's mom had it rough from the start; being nineteen is hard enough, but being nineteen and working a thankless waitressing job as a single mom with a newborn baby is even worse. Somehow, she managed to make do with her situation, raising Rhys in the blistering heat of Florida the best she could. While she couldn't always attend every choir performance, parent-teacher conference, or baseball game, she was as present as she could possibly be while working her ass off to provide for her unruly son.

When she was 24 and Rhys was 5, he met his new stepdad for the first time. They say that children are the best judges of character, and Rhys hated this man the moment he set his eyes on him. 'Daniel' became a part of their lives pretty fast, much to tiny Rhys's disdain, and no amount of bites or tantrums would make him go away. Daniel was here to stay, unfortunately.

Daniel was home with Rhys often during the days while his mom worked. Rhys was a wild child, it was hard to get him to listen, and punishments came quick when Daniel was around. Timeouts weren't uncommon, but neither was the more aggressive shoving his head under running faucets, withholding meals, and purposefully breaking important items in front of him. For a long time, this made Rhys suppressed, nervous, and withdrawn—he was a shell of himself.

Fortunately, this didn't go on forever. When Rhys was 10, his mom filed for divorce and they left the toxic home. Rhys has been in therapy, and has reclaimed himself and his personality—he's bright, talkative, and not afraid to make mistakes anymore. However, to this day, Rhys cannot put his head anywhere near a sink's faucet without panicking.
